Xbox Scarlett Will Get One First Party Game Release Every 3-4 Months, Says Xbox Game Studios Boss

That is exactly the kind of commitment to exclusives that Microsoft needs going forward.
The fundamental failure that held back Xbox this generation was not, in my opinion, it being an underpowered console, or the high launch price, or even the pre-release messaging debacle regarding the console’s initially planned always online compatibility. You can have a very bad launch and recover from it in the end, just look at Sony with the PS3, or Nintendo with the 3DS.

But the difference between those two machines and the Xbox One—and the reason that those two managed to be successes in the end, while the Xbox One clearly has not had as much traction—comes down to the fact that Sony and Nintendo made those systems worth it by putting out a slew of great, must-have games you couldn’t play anywhere else. First party exclusives, in other words, are paramount to the success of a platform—even a system as fundamentally poor as the Wii U sold over 10 million units because of those exclusives.

Microsoft received that memo late, but it did act on it. It’s purchased multiple studios since, and the Xbox Game Studios release slate for 2020 actually looks packed. And, going forward into the Xbox Scarlett era, Microsoft plans to keep that sort of cadence up, and release at least one major first party game on the console once every 3-4 months.

“We feel really good heading into 2020,” Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios, told GamesRadar in an interview. “We’ve got a goal of being able to deliver a game, roughly, every three to four months.

“We have a little bit of work to do to get there. It’ll be lumpy, but we’re closer than we were. And so we feel really good going into 2020 – and the run-up to Project Scarlett – with our content line-up.”

As of right now, I have more faith Microsoft will be able to pull an ambitious release cycle like that off—which not even Sony can, incidentally, they typically have 1-2 major game releases per year most—than I ever have before. As I said before, the release cycle for next year alone looks pretty packed—so at least we are already starting to see the proof in the pudding.

This seems plausible and in line with what the competition does.

Remember, it said “first party game” not AAA, they are not always mutually exclusive.

When you look at the competition, a new game every 3 months (about 4-5 games), is still nothing compared to the 15 games from Sony, or the 20 or so games Nintendo publishes yearly. Still, it'd be a nice step up from their current pacing, where you'd be lucky to get maybe 3 games from Microsoft a year.

It's good to hear that. Now they need to show people they can do that. Their 1st party output has been pretty bad this gen. They need to give people reasons to turn on their Xbox.

3 or 4 games would be passable if they are all AAA games. If its like 2 AAA games and 2 Indes, then thats not great.
Microsoft really need an extra hook next gen imo. They need the power advantage hook. If we had a 360 situation where the majority of multiplatform games (which make up like 95% of games released to be fair) ran or looked better on Scarlett, i could see Xbox just about challenging PS5. If PS5 has the power advantage, AND more exclusives, well it could be another long gen for Xbox.

I would love a Lego Gears game,, essentially a kid friendly chibi version(as I was hoping Gears Pop! would be), and Forza tactics sounds like a motorsport management sim which I'd also be down for.
It’s funny how they think they are being insulting, but why not try to tie an existing ip into a different genre spinoff. Look at all the shit Mario has done, not many begrudge him for it.

You’ve been going balls deep on this narrative for a bit, might want to scale it back until all sides of the cube are shown.

Once we know everything if it still looks the same, go ham. Otherwise you are making some assumptions that could make you look quite foolish in the end.
No doubt the Scarlet version would be pretty. So i find it interesting that you say "look the same". Because nowhere did I ever claim they would look alike.

I am arguing that they would play the same. Because it would still be a current gen game at its core. Next gen games is more than just graphics, they are games that are not possible to run on old hardware.

1. Talk is cheap.
2. Since they are de-facto Xbox One games, they would be easier to make but will have issues competing with true next gen game titles.
Xbox One exclusives. Scaled up for Scarlet, but current gen games.
Where are you getting this from? I'm 99% sure the majority of the Scarlett exclusives are going to be Scarlett/PC only. Microsoft has been clearly fading away from that "forward compatible" statement they made years ago.

Bizarre fanboy statements from you, sorry.

You misread what I said.

In fact I never said they would look or play the same. I said you should hold back on the hyperbole until we know what MS (and Sony) actually plan to do.

Im really not sure where you got this fake narrative, that I said things I didn’t.

i never said look the same or play the same in the post you quoted at all, ever.

Quite defensive, aye?

All I said was that I don't think this is the best approach going by their track-record.
Not being defensive, being realistic. Things change.

Videogames are a fluid industry, where success in the past does not directly translate into success in the future. It’s one of the very few industries where there is movement left.

It’s fine to make predictions based on previous generations, but you shouldn’t sink all your eggs into one basket before you even know what the next step is.

Sounds like you're talking about Sony, tbh.

I’m talking about anyone in particular. I do have a rather long form post coming about the sales of the HD twins and how they are almost identical now.

For this post however, we were talking about MS plans to continually release games through the year, and you said that was a bad idea.

I know we were talking between a couple threads, even I lost track for a second.

No problem.

My point was, that MS has a similar first party output as Sony, except their games are underwhelming overall.

Increasing the quantity doesn't exactly seem like the best move when the quality isn't there to begin with.

Quantity vs quality.
Just sayin.

The goal Post keep moving in here. Everyone knows spiderman would have been triple a if they got better models and got rid of mary jane and miles parts. So if you call spiderman triple a then microsoft should have no problem making games to the same caliber. 😂

Spiderman was not AAA???? I really don't where some of you come up with this shit. Im not sure exactly what the budget for Spiderman was but that's a fuckin great game. Best one since the ps2 game imo. Gameplay was so addictive I platinumed it and I don't platinum many games.

You want something to laugh at, then look no further than Crackdown 3, SoD 2, and MCC. Even a remaster was fuckin made unplayable.

Hey MS what exactly is your definition of AAA games? Talk is cheap, put or shut up.
Is everyone telling MS to "put up or shut up" and "talk is cheap" etc., aware that they just invested billions of dollars in studio acquisitions and a huge expansion of those teams? That is "putting up. That is "action." We're already seeing the fruits of this monumental shift in studio support now and by Scarlett's sophomore year it should be an embarrassment of riches on Gamepass year in and out. Also, I fully expect to learn of a Japanese (or Korean?) acquistion by E3.

Crackdown 3 and Sea of Thieves being higher budget than Spiderman, same caliber amirite?
Spiderman is very triple A, and a good game. I dont get what he means about it not being AAA. As for Sea of Thieves, its not my kind of game, but people need to realize its so much more now than it was at launch. People seem to keep judging it from what it was at release, its practically a different game now.

It is a great game. Not being triple a doesnt make it not a great game. But im not wrong about the models or those sections of the game.

Show me.
Talking a good game is just that...talk, I want to see tangible proof. Just acquiring studios doesn’t cut it.
I want too see MS do good but this past gen really didn‘t have the same “it” factor the 360 had. Only amazing thing this gen is game pass , I will not be burnt by them again .....sorry if I hurt your feelings but it’s not a console war thing , I bought all consoles this gen and the Xbox one was the least used by a huge margin.

Really not sure whats exactly so bad about em. But I'd take some bad models and a shitload of content over a pretty game with no content.

And that's not even the case at ms right now. SoD 2 looks like a bad 360 game and still ran like shit on my X. Repetitive missions over and over and no story. SoD 1 is still miles better.
