Sony: We’re committed to big, spectacular experiences with story and characters at the core

Also a possible hint at further acquisitions within the same quote.

"We are very committed to the types of games we've been making at Worldwide Studios for the last decade: big, spectacular experiences with story and characters at the core. We will keep making these games, because we love to make them. And as a brand we are eager to branch out and start including and curating a new generation of developers, that create new and different experiences for a new generation of gamers."

I miss the crazy days of the PS1 and ps2 era... Before gaming was so desperately trying to copy Hollywood. Even trailers are like movie trailers nowadays.
I miss the wacky crazy game trailers and adverts of old days.

This is why Sony is slowly losing me.

Same. I definitely pick and choose which Sony games I'm getting as opposed to being a full-blown fan of the Sony lineup. Sony makes a great mass-market console that will receive numerous third-party titles, which is why I'm a fan of the Playstation brand. Their narrative-driven games are pushing the industry in a bad direction, IMO. More voice acting, more mo-cap, more scripting, more Hollywood-styled cutscenes, more Sony cameras doing Sony things on Sony OLEDs with Sony VR goggles, etc

I understand that some people really enjoy those experiences and I accept it, but Sony does not exhibit the plucky, fun-loving attitude that I want a videogame company to have, and it shows in their game output. It even shows when you compare their E3 "shows" today to the ones at the beginning of the PS4 generation.

i don't know about you guys but as i get older, i simply can't even bother with a game that doesn't tell a good story with good characters
I rather have little story and focus on gameplay (like Darkest Dungeon, Rogue Legacy, etc). In the past years I have focused more on indies because I no longer have patience for endless cutscenes and backstory after backstory with flashbacks. Uncharted 4 and Horizon bored me to death. I enjoyed God of War because it had much less story to tell.

i feel the complete opposite and it's the main reason why i just don't enjoy Nintendo as much i used to (except for titles like fire emblem, the only reason i own a switch)

different strokes for different folks

Me too...

But I think when I was a kid I only started to really care about video games because of games like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fatasy VII.

I had a Mega Drive (Genesis) and a SNES and I didn't care much about it, but on PS1, the presentation, the characters and plot made me fell in love with games.

I think that's the reason that after the Wii I never cared to try Nintendo games. These days if the game doesn't have an interesting setting(story, characters...) or doesn't have a good online portion, I simply don't care about it.

Sony mostly does exactly the types of games I want.

I don’t hate story heavy games with walkie talkie sections but what I do hate is on replays not being able to skip the walkie talkie parts. It’s honestly my biggest gripe with them. I don’t care if the scene is Oscar worthy acting etc, just let me skip it an dump me at the next main gameplay part. Or a mode for replays that cuts all the walkie talk crap out.

the thought of replaying some games that have those sections puts me off wanting to revisit them a lot of the time. I feel sorry for speed runners of the new God of War lol

Hopefully that will be a thing of the past as they no longer will need to use those scenes to mask loading times.

Fun gameplay used to be more important since companies couldn't bank on a cinematic experience captivating you. Now that both technology and the industry have grown it's becoming obvious this is where they're putting their eggs. While you can have both, it doesn't seem the majority of big releases have focused enough on engaging gameplay mechanics lately. And IMO it's to the detriment of gaming in general.

While games like TLOU and GOW are beautiful cinematic experiences, the gameplay is very basic and leaves a lot to be desired.

Yeah baby!!! That's one of the many reasons why Sony and PlayStation is the fucking best baby!!! Just need to stay in third person and more importantly, single player baby!!! Woohoo!!! So hyped for next gen!!!

Matthewmatosis made an excellent point that's sort of about this on the new God of War, where you have so many elevator segments to mask loading times that are essentially a moronic decision since GOW won't be locked to the PS4 and newer consoles are going to have faster loading times, so you'll just be sitting on your ass doing nothing for no reason. You build your game to mask a hardware weakness, but you do so at the cost of lessening the experience.

Not only is their pr bad but now they've shown they'll overreact to even the smallest bit of criticism.

Great, more walking simulators. Can't wait to rescue pigs and pick flowers in GoW 2.

Bloodborne was the best thing Sony did this gen, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have a PS4.

Bloodborne, Until Dawn, the Last Guardian(not great gameplay wise, but unique), Death Stranding. Haven't played Days Gone.

Everything else is garbage. Maybe next gen they will change their assembly line

Unless they are japanese or have fanservice. In that case, we need to forcibly censor it. - Sony since 2016.

Its the Marvel Studios model basically. 2-3 big Tentpoles a year, every year to draw attention and interest and the rest will follow.

I don't see that as a good thing. It comes across to me like "expect more of the same," which is fine or even great if you don't already think there are enough big budget games focused on storytelling, but I'd like to see a little more creativity from major studios, the kind that extends to genres/game design and not just the type of story delivered to us via 3rd person action/adventure.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
OK. I heard that as: Uncharted over and over again.

Sorry but, I've had enough of that. If you like it, more power to you. I'm just gonna keep playing my Switch in the mean time,

Cool cool. I hope to see Sony take more risks and continue investing in less conventional game concepts like Death Stranding.

Would love to see more non-power fantasy games with a AAA budget.
