To put PS5 5.5GB/s SSD in prospective PS4 only had 5.5GB of RAM available for games

With that in mind what was once the limit that a dev could use per load screen without data streaming can now be streamed in every second. that's 90MB each frame , a RAW file from a 24MP camera is around 25MB so the level of detail that could be pushed to the screen could be insane.

PS4 HDD could only stream around 2MB per frame in a 60 fps game .

Greatness awaits 🔥🔥🔥

I don’t even understand the meaning of this thread, what does one thing have to do with the other ? Please Sony spare us all and announce that freakin 13 TF ps5 cause this is just bizarre.

I’d ask why you are comparing the read/write speed of a drive to ram, but I’m pretty sure I already know the answer.

To put it in perspective how much data can be streamed in every second.

Instead of a whole level being loaded into 5.5GB of RAM you can now stream that amount of data in every second , so this 5.5GB goes from being the a whole level that you had to wait to load up to now being what you can use on screen as far as the player can see in a second of game play,

Yeah I did know the answer. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I dont understand your correlation of bandwdith speed versus memory storage. The ps4 ram had 5.5 usable to developers but if i recall it had bandwidth of 176gb/s

You can now refill that 5.5GB of RAM every second.

Before you had to load everything you needed for a level into that 5.5GB of RAM unless you was streaming from the hard drive which only got you about 2MB per frame in a 60fps game so you didn't get much out of streaming but now you can get about 90MB per frame from the SSD.

You are allowed to like a product that isn't as powerful.

The PS5 being weaker is causing more meltdowns than the x1 launch... and that was a clusterfuck of a mess.
I just want to interject for the moment and point out that Playstation never intentionally try to be the most powerful, except for the one mistake called PS3.

Every generation before PS3, some other machine was stronger. And yet Sony came out on top of them. And PS4 only was stronger by pure chance because of MS nerfing their own hardware.
The power narrative, belief that power wins console generations... That is a fabrication that Microsoft only started to pull once they released the 1X.

If it were true that power is what matters, Neo Geo would have still been around.

Ps5 just need to be one thing in my eyes to seal the deal next gen; a $399 price tag.

For the trolls that think I'm only talking about this because Sony put a fast SSD in the PS5

If you care this much about having over 16GB of GDDR6 Ram why are you not excited about the thought of having 1TB of NVMe? To me this is one of the best things that could happen Next Gen , you see it as storage I see it as a big pool of Ram

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
So in one second PS4 ram would fill and in a whole 3 seconds PS5 ram will fill, what's your point lol?

To put my pool pump’s 1 horsepower motor into perspective, my neighbor has 1 horse which is able to run really fast and jump really high.

This had no right to make me laugh as much as it did.

EDIT: As a paid up member of the Sony Ponies, I'll say this; even I'm gonna need to see how this all works, cos I'm having trouble imagining it.

To me, it looks like the gpu has no hope processing all the data the ssd can throw at it. In that sense then, is the ssd future proofed for the inevitable PS5 Pro?

No that's not it ,

It's not about loading the RAM in 3 seconds it's about being able to stream in the data up to 180MB per frame in a 30fps game or up to 90MB per frame in a 60fps game.

Did... Did you just quote yourself?

That awkward moment

Not gonna happen. Sony is not in the financial position right now, especially with covid-19 destroying the movie Industry.

Also, with that VERY EXPENSIVE SSD, I don’t see $399 happen. It’s going to be at least $449. or $499.

But we will see end of the year.

I fully expect these consoles to be priced on par with each other. Nobody is getting the jump on pricing even though they went different routes.

Report me if I continue to console war

I think sony will go $499, and put exclusives day and date on PS now.
They dont need too, but if they want to keep there "for the gamers" reputation they cant let xbox have to many advantages.

the 16gb ram is definitely a sad part of the new consoles but the increase in disk speed seems right though. At least to me the idea of significantly reducing loading times is super exciting.
They don’t need Ram though, so why upgrade it?

SSD is the RAM now, hence this topic.

... ok, virtually everything in the OP isn't how any metric being discussed actually works, is used, or is relevant, when discussing asset streaming or real time rendering. This thread doesn't add anything to anyone's perspective. Please, just stop.
