Microsoft switching from an SSD focus to a teraflops with (an at the time) out of place emphasis on fixed-clocks as we got close to the PS5 presentation suggests they knew in detail what to expect, and then shifted their marketing strategy accordingly. A marketing strategy that seems to implicitly reference its competition more than its own direction at times.

It today's weird and out of nowhere Tweet by Microsoft indicative of what we can expect next week? Do they have more intel and are trying to set the tone early?

MS has never been a company to successfully and consistently innovate. They’re buyers and copiers, not innovators.

I mean they traded on DOS - bought from another guy and pimped as their own to IBM. Windows - copied from apple amongst others. Office -copied or bought bits from other companies. Those are their successful things.

Then there’s a long list of copies that failed, and stuff they bought that either they squandered or it existed outside of MS control and was just allowed to survive in limbo - minecraft is a good example as is Flight Sim - both bought from outside and now seemingly left to drift along in zombie mode.

Is it any surprise that MS console strategy is to try and copy their competitors rather than innovate for themselves - it’s what they’ve done in every market they enter...

Having taken that shit on MS - praise where praise is due. Bringing Live to consoles was a first and an important addition to consoles at the time and they were well ahead of the game. That was innovative and much kudos to them for forcing Sony to do better. It’s a shame MS have stagnated on the technology though - or maybe it’s just that that tech has played out for now.

Sony came into this gen with a vision about what they wanted to achieve, where major gains could be made, and developed a console to match. MS just took what they did last gen, copied Sony’s SSD idea inelegantly and are now trying to win the bullet point war.

Nintendo has a very different target. If Xbox is gone, nothing happens. Playstation has already filled this gap everywhere except for the US. A bunch of boy scouts with an inferiority complex is not healthy competition anyway.

I think it's hard for people inside the US to comprehend that Xbox isn't even a competitor. The Xbox 360 flourished here due to piracy and cheap $2.6-1.3 USD pirated games, and still wasn't too popular compared to PS3.

You say football and they'll think you're talking about handball with Takeshi Castle outfit. :messenger_winking_tongue:

Xbox 360 did fairly well in the UK, but all that work was undone with Xbox One. Most people I know that had 360 and PS3 didn’t bother with One this time around.

The sheer minority, to be precise. I always get rid of the physical backlog to some kids in the neighborhood or to friends. Problem is all my backlog now is digital.

I still have a ps3 with hundreds of games and I don't turn it on mainly because I just have a huge backlog of ps4 games. If I do it'll be only for Demon Souls.
Someone else is trying hard with their "most compatible console ever" so here comes the tongue-in-cheek:

OH shit! Shots fired 😂😂🔥🔥BTW all those Halos are giving to much credit imo. Halo has been feeling generic and old for awhile. I bargain bin them now. Waiting for a new, hopefully good Fable though.

Nintendo has been for me real competition for Sony, I mean they born because NIntendo made Nintendo if you got that,
they can win a generation with some crazy idea or good games and then lost the next generation in a spectacular way.

And as the games of both are so different is sometimes harder for both be sure who will "win", these are for me where
exists the real competition for make the "best" games, Xbox just love to say "my daddy is rich" I mean the last time they
made a excellent game which bring new mechanics was in Gears of War the first one.

The blued part is actually what I liked about Sony here, they're just referring to themselves and even in the Road to PS5 they were comparing to themselves as well, skipping competition:

It's strange when Phil said that both PlayStation and Nintendo aren't the main competitors, but Google and Amazon are. Then why always refer to the "non-competitor" and even retweet their own demo that they didn't even bother to retweet themselves?:goog_unsure:

I like what Sony's doing here, showing that competition is non-existent.

Every good dog barks at the wrong tree at least once in their life.

Anyway, Microsoft seems to be a little confused about their Xbox division. A bit desperate lately, but it's probably just my unfounded opinion.

The only game I would really like to try from Xbox is Forza series. But it's not nearly enough to make me buy that console. Maybe a second-hand or refurbished one for half price from Gamestop unless Gamestop kicks the bucket until then 😂

This is a joke account, right?

Previously Sony CFO. Currently Sony CEO. Parody
from the profile and the logo verified not available.

So yes it's a fake account as Kaz Hirai:

Me too, but it's funny that my PC can run it at 4K ultra yet I didn't bother to buy it, even PC gaming in general as never played a game on it. My morals and principles hold me back.

What I meant is that people buy Nintendo consoles for a very different reason. It's a great console for young players, with many titles that don't focus on violence and destruction. I'm an old fart who plays online shooters myself but I wouldn't recommend that to children. I had Wii, WiiU, even Switch but I didn't keep any of those long because Nintendo's games are not serious or realistic and most of them have no adult story to tell. But I know a lot of people, usually in their 30s, who grew up with Pokemon and Mario. I know that for a lot of them it's still important and Switch sales prove that. That's a good market and I hope Nintendo stops playing silly with mobile games and they focus on their own audience and thrive there. Who knows, maybe I'll buy Switch again one day when prices go down. Right now it's crazy that a handheld costs the same as X1X and PS4Pro.

In my opinion, discussing who "wins" is pointless. If consumers win, companies will be fine. I hope Microsoft loses not because I support the other side but because their idea of winning is destroying competition in every possible way. Neither Sony nor Nintendo have that attitude. Nintendo never cared about smaller markets and it's one of the reasons I'm not their fan now because I had no experience with their consoles when I was young. But they saved consoles with NES and they have my respect for that.

I'd recommend Ori but it depends what you like. For me racers are mostly boring. Driving a real car cannot be beaten even in VR.

Holdup you're not going to praise xbox live when Sega pioneered the way with Segalink and Sega.net on the Saturn and Dreamcast.

The vast majority of Sony's talent is bought. There isn't some sort of Sony game development tech college people can attend lol!

And at the end of the day, when Sony ceases to exist in the future, Microsoft will still be taking a daily piss in not only yours, but your kids Cheerios every morning.

Digest that.

About that...

The whole compression data (Kraken/BCPack) decrease the game data.
Plus there is no more duplicated data.

These two points already decrease the size of the game at over 50% compared with last gen.

Epic devs said the new tech Lunen and Nanite were created to ship games to consumers when asked about game size... so I don’t believe there will be any game over 100GB data this generation (the BD dual layer limit).
PS4 games are already compressed with zlib, but of course kraken will provide additional compression.

oodle_seven_ratio_chart.png

The PS4 used Zlib as its compression format, which the PS5 is also using, but the new console will also support Kraken which Cerny called “Zlib’s smarter cousin”.

Developers need miltiple gigabytes to store code assets and one developer has even said UE5 tech demo must be well over 100 GB considering it's CGI assets quality. So can we really expect similiar quality in real games? Games with suxh assets everywhere would be absolutely gigantic even with 50% size reduction. If you dont believe any game will be over 100 GB this generation, then be prepared to be surprised.

To be honest i belive in 100-200 GB AAA games.

You're right, I had forgotten about Ori. That's also a very nice one.

And yes, racing gets boring after a while, but from what Sony has to offer as of now, GT Sport, that one seems very dry to me. I need me an old school Gran Turismo, hopefully we'll get that for PS5.

But open world racers now, very few and not extremely exciting. The Crew 2, I cannot really get into it, played the first one, close, but no cigar.

Although I think this hype train thing is silly, it is heartwarming to see the enthusiasm around the reveal event. The excitement is same as it was back then.

To be very, very honest: My hype level is way higher than before! I've never even dreamed of the level of that UE5 demo did, it touched the impossible. Now imagine the magical 1st party studios of PS5 and their superiority in the business!

This time around the hype train has no bottlenecks!

Funny shit is once a game is over most devs in companies move along to other jobs and aren't kept. You could literally make a chart like this of all devs positions for every major company and it will have talent coming in from other notable companies prior. They all have ppl tht came from elsewhere so I'm not sure what this chart is for lol 😂 😂 😂
they want to say that sony is doomed and xbox is saved and rise above sony with glorious games :messenger_tears_of_joy:  :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I'm excited for next week, it could be one of the best weeks so far, in regards to next gen info and games. I can see Microsoft revealing some things on monday or tuesday to get ahead of Sony if the June 3rd event really happens. If I remember correctly it's not the first time Microsoft has revealed things days earlier kinda like "Hey, whatever they are going to announce I can do that too!"
For example, the back compat stuff from today. Imagine that Sony reveals the "remastering by emulation" thing from their patent, guess what, Xbox already announced something like that days before.

What are thy getting ahead of exactly? Almost everything Microsoft has done has been Reactionary starting with Sony's wired article and Microsoft coming out a week later with same taking points of next Gen and following Sony's blueprint just in a video version. Microsoft got ahead and showed console and GPU what has tht really done for them? Nothing, Sony dropped a mere logo and grabbed more attention. Sony mindshare is tremendous and tht won't change unless they monumentally fuck up which thy won't. At this point its not about coming in front or after its about quality and what you have to show. Microsoft can't win against Sony in the console space so tht shouldn't be their focus, it should be on being profitable and gaining some marketshare little by little.

The current marketing spin by Microsoft kinda makes me sad. I never bought an Xbox simply because I can play their games on PC, but the ones I did play (Ori, Forza Horizon and Motorsport, Gears) are actually very good games. It's clear that Microsoft's target demographic in games is different, and they should cultivate that and grow as a brand. Pigginbacking on non-sense, brand attacks and their non-sensical rabid fanboys (and I mean fanboys, like Timdog and such, not people that prefer their console) seems distasteful and borderline counterproductive.

If things continue as they are, we will see yet another gen where the Xbox will be roflstomped by Nintendo and Sony, and will not be providing what their buyers deserve.
