Have they announced if this is a smart delivery title yet, because that could be a work around for Xbox folks lol

Its a generational transition.... always the best time to test the water and see if you can squeeze a few more dollars out of the consumer. I doubt we see $70 games as the norm, I do see a wide spectrum of prices this gen (not including SEs) $30-$70 for retail sounds about right. $70 being used mostly by big AAA games or ones that rely heavily on licensed content.

regardless... its only going to go up if consumers allow it. Of course that doesn't mean you will get the same quantity or quality content for that price.

Games has been 69,99€ in Europe for wages and that translates to $77, 55 so I am a bit scare of this increase in the $ territory

NBA 2k21 next-gen is being built from the ground up for next-gen, it's not a cross-gen game. I'm sure Madden and Fifa are cross-gen. I'm big NBA fan so I'll rent it from Gamefly and keep for a discount.
Yeah, i'm sure the casino sounds and visuals will be out of this world on the next gen consoles.

The more reason to support that physical PS4/Xbox Series X sku. Think before going for that digital sku and the supposed "savings" on hardware. The used games market for physical is king.

Fuck Take Two.

No kidding. Makes me question going digital when they control the price.

Let's see what the rest of the big publishers will do, 2K is among the greediest ones so it doesn't have to mean anything. ;)

If this is actually going be the case, then I'll definitely think about not buying any full priced games on launch (even now for me it's only a few per year).
Gamepass has made gaming easier for me. I game more now than ever before.

Pay $70 for casino infested half-games, and for left leaning danger-hair developers to preach their politics at you.

Those marginally better rock textures though.

According to Steam I think I've purchased every deluxe version for the past decade or so, and unfortunately (for 2K) the streak will be coming to an end this year. The core gameplay is still really good, it literally got me interested in basketball again. Giving it up isn't just about the price hike or cross-gen fuckery, they've barely developed anything outside of MT for years and the value isn't in the product anymore. I'm happy to wait a month or two and maybe pick it up for $20-30 when it inevitably comes on sale. Hopefully there are some legitimate upgrades that make the next gen version worthwhile, because decreasing loading speeds from 10 seconds to 2 seconds doesn't seem like much of a win, especially when it's network issues that are the main bottleneck these days.

Good luck with smart delivery when next gen games cost more than current gen, publishers dont like giving away money. While this might be rough on some people its not surprising. If a company spends more money to develop a next gen game (or version) they must recover the cost involved.

There really is a defense force for everything. I'm kind of impressed.

This decision is not driven by need, new market realities, or a 16% increase in development costs. They're just seeing what they can get away with at the start of a generation while everyone's out to splash a little more cash for their shiny next gen consoles.

Considering how poor the last few 2K iterations have been, I’m officially done. It’s a great time for EA to get their shit together and undercut them with a quality product.

This will give publishers/devs more cash per unit sold but will sell less units. Last price hike I slowed down and bought less unproven games and mostly stuck with proven IPs, then later grabbing titles from bargain bins.

More price hikes just make services like gamepass even more enticing.

Back in 2005 there was a huge debate too, but after experiencing it in the past many people have the inclination to NOT get upset at the inevitable. No one actually wants to pay more, such is a against self-interest. But this is capitalism, if someone can provide a better product at a lower price thats the companies prerogative to do so but it is also the companies prerogative to demand I higher price for a commodity that will still be in demand even at its higher price (especially if additional production costs are involved). If games went to $100 the price it might be prohibitive enough, and a lack of sales would drive down the price, but a $10 increase will not have that effect on the market.

Don't like next-gen game prices starting at $70 for the standard editions? Don't buy them for a few months, and publishers will soon change their tunes!

Autistic gamers will screech about microtransactions and then refuse to pay over $60 for a game even with improved production values. Lol!

Kobe is one of my favorite athletes, I'm not buying that version no one should. They're money grabbing here like a son of bitch.

They could've easily put him on the $60 dollar case and have a slip cover or reversible cover art for him on the base edition. As for $70 next-gen games I'm surpised it hasn't happened already honestly.

Games have been the same prices for 15 years. What else has stayed the same price over that time?

Nobody wants to pay more, but this doesn't seem unreasonable.

lol NBA live needs to come back ASAP
I wish they would bring back NBA Jam. It was the only basketball title I liked to play.

Will indie devs making smaller games also increase prices?
Their sales aren't guaranteed like big publishers titles, it will be risky.
New prices like this?
19.99 - > 29.99
39.99 - > 49.99
59.99 - > 69.99

Meh... I've been waiting this gen for prices to go down to 20-30 on sales, I'll just have to wait a couple extra months next gen.

Good luck with that. I'm confident the next gen version of NBA 2K won't be much different from not only current gen 2K21 but NBA 2K18.

When NBA2k20 debuted in September 2019, not only was it the highest selling game that month, it became the highest selling game of the year to date in that one month.

It's fine to be salty about price increases, but you aren't thinking about it rationally if you just ignore the fact that release date MSRPs have been stable for 15 years and games like this sell tons of copies immediately at MSRP. As suggested, just wait until Black Friday or wait for it to make it to Gamepass/PS+ if you are morally opposed to paying MSRP.

Or hell, don't buy it all. I haven't bought a 2k game in years since exploiting people for VC has become the organizing principle of the development team.

I expect this to combat “smart delivery”. Im pretty sure publishers dont enjoy Microsoft trying to force them into giving free copies.

I think paying 10 dollars to upgrade your PS4 copy into a PS5 copy is fair.

It’s not. Wait already paid more than enough for remasters. What’s worse is that remasters aren’t going away. They’ll have it both ways.

Micro-transactions brings more than enough money for 2K. That increase is pure greed. Increase the price but remove Micro-transactions. You can’t have it both ways.

Incentivizing people to hold off on jumping into next generation. What a compelling strategy.

The digital versions will probably cost the same too lol.

Oh, btw: I'll glady pay 70 bucks for a multiplayer AAA title that is actually finished upon release.
Haven't seen one of those since... ever?
