Phil Spencer feels it's counter productive to lock people away from games by making them device exclusive, prefers to scale games across ecosystem

The level of argument is this...

"Xbox fan boys are like...'bro, phil spencer and Xbox are so pro-consumer bro, their so fucking so pro-consumer, Phil Spencer is like the fucking Captain Planet of video games, so fucking pro consumer bro'”

It's juvenile and literal to the point of causing me pain to watch it. Is that the ceiling of the debate for you? The end point? Some imbecile with an agenda made an actual video and put it on Youtube. Argument over!

Come on sircaw, you're better than that. I've seen you guys make much better arguments than that cretinous peacock.

Did you miss the entire point of the video, Try focus on the points he is making, as for the satire in it, you can just ignore it, if it hurts your feelings. He is using humour to show how ridiculous some of the xbox fanboys points are.

I understand people wanting to protect their games as they can hold meaning to a person but trying to protect the head of xbox, seriously what the fuck are you doing, he is a corporate rat. Hes not your buddy, hes not your friend, don't pay your xbox pass sub and he will cut off.

Remove head out of Spencer Cavity and you will see the light.

Come on dude, you can't seriously be this blind.
Smell the coffee. :messenger_beaming:

and just in case you think this is a Sony thing, they are exactly the fucking same.
Corporate don't give two shits about minnows like us.

But doing it only a year or so later is now pro consumer? Why do they allow third parties to do it? Why do they stop supporting Xbox 360?

You call it withholding content, I call it making content for the old platform and content for the new one. There is literally no platform where HW upgrades and OS upgrades do not cause developers to drop support over time.

Your strategy ends up under serving people that do get the new console in order to have the game be launching across generations and target a minimum common denominator.
Sure your argument can be “I am a consumer, I do not care... hire more people, spend more money, make two completely separate versions with completely separate teams... (but do not dare charge me twice or raise the price of the game)” but it is essentially the same as saying “I want the games micro transactions free and I want them all for $1.99 or less else it is anti consumer”.
Not to stay too much on the point that if for example they were making two completely different ports of the same game, one taking full advantage of the new HW and this day enabling different level scenarios or something, they would still be anti consumer by your definition as technically they are withholding content from one version on top of it being economically unpractical (I seriously doubt you would buy the game twice, once per platform).

Supporting vastly different HW and software capabilities is expensive and that eats into the R&D budget of the game itself. I think the strategy Sony has of releasing tons of AAA and AA titles at the end of a generation and even into the new one and mostly letting BC do its thing to carry the games over to the new generation and then offering new games for those that pickup the new console that are designed to take advantage of it and show what The new console can do for you.

An alternative apparently pro consumer approach is getting people to buy new HW on hype and then not giving them optimised content for a year or two...
No, because after a year or two the games are literallly incapable of running on previous generations. But when they can at some level but not as well as the new version, its a problem to me to put them only on the new consoles forcing people to buy the game. If Miles was made ground up for the ps5 and couldnt run at all on the ps4 bet thats cool. But it seems like its made with the skeleton of the ps4 game and probably can run on the console but is being pushed as "next gen only" which seems to be out of pure marketing, not because it can only run on the new generations. I'm not saying Sony as a whole is anti consumer, but this particular move is so you don't need to bring up their whole track record of pro consumer moves because I'm talking about this particular case.

There is no narrative. Spencer and the xbox fanbase are flipflopping around like their pants are on fire.

Everything sounds like damage control ever since Sony had their PS5 reveal.
I actually feel like that both Microsoft and Sony are on damage control in a way. Both reveals were pretty lackluster. I still don't get why I should buy a new console.

Without tinted glasses, its not hard to see both shows were disappointing aside from maybe a handful of games.

Stuff like The Ascent, The Medium, HFW, DS: RE, and R&C were the most impressive (although I never care for R&C).

What is this particular case? A single game? Based on what you think it seems to be made with or from? Is that all your evidence? Based on being July and all we know then is MS shipping CG movies in the fall too (hint: there is more to come for the launch window for both consoles)?
Sorry If bringing a consistent track record to offer context instead of a series of flip flops hurts your case, but it is what it is.

Sony is not starving PS4 customers giving PS4 owners some of the best games of the generation and has not caused any major drought saving big games for the next generation launch and on top of that, as you are quoting the example from a company working on other two titles in for PS5 parallel.

It is perhaps actually proving that focusing only on PS5 they can bring in a third to wet people’s appetite on what PS5 can deliver (doubt that R&C is that far off too and if both titles had to be cross generation they would cost extra/present complexity delaying both and maybe not slowing three games [Spider-man 2 too] at all). I think this example hurts your point.

Windows is the default PC gaming OS, you know that, everyone knows that. Mac OS and Linux gaming engagement is a statistical error and no dev/publisher is taking those seriously, even Valve tries and it’s failing pretty badly at it, and I have yet to encounter 1 person on the wild who games on Linux.

Xbox/PC/cellphones and tablets(xCloud) and also Samsung TVs soon is pretty much all devices imo, nothing disingenuous about it. That means your games are on computers, consoles, smart TVs and smart devices, you pretty much cover all bases that way. Also, their games scale super well on PC, even stuff like Forza and Sea of Thieves were made to scale all the way down to integrated graphics, the Cursed setting on Sea of Thieves being created specifically for that, making it playable on something like a surface pro 3.

Sure, sure... throwing the Xcloud bone to non MS Windows PC’s and Xbox consoles and forgetting about PlayStation and Nintendo... how interestingly pro consumer... will be sure to check out Xcloud and GamePass in PS4/PS5 and Switch... you know, would not want to cut a few hundreds million devices and gamers from it too ;).

This is how you can tell his statements are just corporate speak, because by his logic we'd be getting Halo on PS4/Switch.
He's trying to excuse a corporate move, same as the nonsense Jim Ryan spouted over cross-play.

It’s PR for next gen only games not being ready by them for the launch of their new system, since one year later it’s gonna flip and he already preemptively said that.

Transparent Ambiguity. They should trademark that name for their PRchitecture.

He's right. Sucks for sony fans that they have to buy sonys hardware and be locked into it to play their games. And they have such stockholm syndrome they actually think its good lol. Traditional exclusives are becoming less relevant the way the industry is going, being locked to a single box is a con. The only situation someone would actually want a game to be exclusive is if theyre a stock holder or corporate cheerleader fanboy. I want to be able to play games with my friends on PC/XB1 while im on the Series X.

I definitely like Sony, its hard not to, I joined the console generation a couple of years ago, could of gone either route but finally decided to go with playstation. I was almost duped into getting an xbox by watching silly videos from fake fucking chills like like Dealer, colt eastwood, Mbg crapgamer. They were all ways praising xbox but after i started to do independent research about games, all there bullshit was either lies, damage control or wait for this or that.

That's why i can't stand them or there propaganda views. Do they make good videos, sure, production values are high. but there substance is the same, its all smoke and mirrors.

As for sony, i played horizon, god of war, Rachet and clank and was BLOWN AWAY. After that, i just kept of finding more and more great games to play, my back log is crazy.

Do i like Sony, i like there products, there games keep delivering, even right up to the end of the generation. Last of us 2 10/10 we got Ghost of tushima or how ever you spell it, is just round the corner.

I am sick of hearing about empty lies, or flip flop statements.

I have no idea why people keep defending Microsoft so much, at one stage Exclusives were not important, then they are, Sony are not our competition then they are, I could actually go on but there is no point, i am sure you get the drift.

As for sony they have delivered, so i put my trust in them for the next generation as they have earned it.

Here is a fact, i want to by a lockheart, mainly for Grimdawn and fable, but after Phil Spencer last ridiculous comments i am like thinking well what happens in three years time when Microsoft just decide to put an app on the playstation so i can play those games anywhere, if i buy a lockheart and this happens, what a waste of fucking money.

If they don't care what you play on as long as you play it, that worries me.

Always getting mixed messages from Microsoft.

In the end, i just don't trust Microsoft.

If you do, well, what can i say.

News flash: Phil Spencer runs the gaming division of MICROSOFT. Not Linux or Playstation. He is speaking about avoiding the fragmentation of MICROSOFT's gaming customers by giving them access on all of their MICROSOFT devices and software platforms. You are just baiting people into bickering at this stage and i will leave you to your obvious agenda of proving at all costs that Phil Spencer is the problem with gaming because he allows people to play new games without buying the latest hardware.

If his only concern is people within the Xbox ecosystem when making these statements then what was with his recent obsession with crossplay?

He's attempting to create this narrative that Xbox are the white Knight good guys of gaming all of a sudden, and that anyone who doesn't do what they do are now the bad guys.

Newsflash: anyone who isn't up his arse can see through the bullshit. It's pretty transparent at this point.

And I love how the idea of needing to buy new hardware once every 6-7 years is now a bad thing. Imagine celebrating the "worlds most powerful console" and stagnation at the same time.

I agree. But you are still expecting too much from him. Yes he reached a point where he is able to buystudios but that doesn't mean that we will get high budget games. If you really want big GAMES from ms you should make sure that phil knows that you are not giving him the benefit of the doubt. Once you play his new games and they match the quality of ps exclusives then we will start respecting him a bit by bit, but the fact that he is downplaying exclusives and next gen exclusives is a sign that he is not aiming to create big games. So why would i trust his leadership? Why would i wait eagerly for his next conference?

I don't blame him because of his situation but he really don't have to over promise things or shed bad light on what Sony is doing. When he is ready to deliver BIG unique games, once we play them and get impressed by them than we will give him praise, but right now he is not there yet and he keeps insulting the best things about Sony just so that he can redefine another thing.

I don't think Sony will have an issue with that once Xbox become third party service. It will be like playing Sonic on PS.

Serious question: are you guys just upset about what Phil said as it pertains to how Sony typically does generations?

Im just trying to understand. I keep reading how "Phil has a problem with exclusives" when the man simply didnt say that. Its innaccurate. He said he doesnt believe in locking down exclusives to one device - whereas Sony does. Apparently Microsoft has the tools and resources to not only develop their own 1st party games for Series X and PC. But they can scale the very same games to work on older versions of Xbox. Its a very PC centric agenda as PC development has been working this way for decades.

Now consoles will have the same avenues of development. Why do people have a problem with this? Genuine question.

Sort of - the base XB1/1X can still serve as an xCloud HUB once the games won't be able to run on them natively.
Its funny he even said that as they do intend to use the cloud on Series X while your game downloads so you can play instantly instead of waiting. I dig it.

Do these special tools and commitments expire after a year? Is that why they are magical and what is going to be the pro consumer stance when they inevitably announce XSX first party exclusives in a year or so beside hoping people forgot what they said now and are too excited about whatever was announced to care?

Is it that Phil today is again arguing with what Phil did not long before?
Is it seeing Phil say something today and the opposite on the same day or so?

69HbUhL.jpg

They are holding games back until the new console out helping a last year’s first party draughts as usual, they are locking game’s to devices just like Sony is doing but crying about it as if they were a third party publisher, and this argument is quite a disingenuous way to excuse the fact that their own first party have likely not ramped up production yet.

A PC maker is trying to change a console eco system it has not been able to win in about 30 years into a locked down PC lookalike pretending it is doing for the gamers inventing the problem and offering the solution? Oh convenient ;). Not like you did not see it argued page after page and are not ignoring it to change the narrative, right?

Ok Phil, if it's true please release all your future and past Halo, Gears and KI games on PS5 (and the new Forza games). A ton of players more will enjoy them there, specially if with total crossplay. They will be more than welcome there.

It's counter productive to keep them device exclusive, so to release them on PS5 for sure more players will enjoy them and you'll make way more money by reaching a way bigger audience.

Dude WTF are you even talking about? What narrative. It just comes down to me seeing exactly what he's saying and you thinking theres some hidden agenda. In my opinion its a smart move. Give new adopters of next gen experiences what they expect. Let people who dont want to upgrade, upgrade when their ready while still giving them the ability to play the same games with Series X owners. Its literally that simple.

Why people feel the need to make it into a negative is beyond me. Its pro consumer AF.

Nemesis system was only 'scalable' because it was a side feature. The base gameplay didn't depend on it to work so they could have two separate versions without taking away much. But take anything that's integral to base gameplay and its over. Here's actual devs (xbox no less) talking about gameplay that can't be done on older systems: https://wccftech.com/the-medium-couldnt-be-done-in-the-same-way-on-current-gen-bloober/

"I can't tell you right now about our most important feature, because we will have to save it for later. But the gameplay mechanic built around those two worlds couldn't be fully realized on current-gen hardware "

Are you done with your fud?

Yeah, I don't believe him. They could have made the transitions longer to the other world, because the switches are done in an aggressive shake to hide the loading now, so there were other slower solutions to addressing that.

We will see how it does on a PC, because I believe it will be released there too. Once we get definite proof I will concede my stance till than no way. So the fud argument your arguing to push is nothing more than an opinion just like mine. I am just skeptical about it, while you took their word for gospel, something that in the gaming world usually ends up biting people into the ass and disappointing.

You are defending Spencer quotes from other Spencer quotes and taking as if you are the only one with the Ovaltine decoding ring that knows what Spender truly said.

Sure, it is so so pro consumer... they are totally not trying to change the console market ina generationless GaaS scenario to suit themselves no sir and they totally could have tons of exclusive games for XSX as well as Xbox One instead of draughts but somehow the first year in a console lifecycle is something magical...

What happens in a year or so? Why can they make XSX exclusive games then? Did people get a second job and bought an XSX finally?

How do you argue that it is great and so pro consumer to keep supporting Xbox One and then turn around and are obviously super ready to accept that about a year in they give up on this and move to exclusive XSX games?

I think they obviously won't release their games on PS5. I'm just saying it's PR bullshit.

They release their games crossgen to try to compensate they have a small market share, same reason of why they put it on PC too, platfrom to where they are slowly moving/merging their gaming division since years ago because they also have there their main MS (the whole, not only the gaming division) market.

I also think that their bet for BC is also related to compensate that their library is weaker compared to Sony on Nintendo because of the exclusives.

But Phil twists the message to make it more PR/fans friendly.

The landscape has already changed broski. Its been changing for years. Maybe you just have an issue with Sony being behind the curve in this aspect. Because they are. Great first party games? For sure. Lacking behind everything else because theyre stuck in a traditional, older business model, even in the face of an ever evolving gaming landscape with new big players entering the ring? Absolutely!

As far as what happens when they stop developing for the older model of Xbox consoles; hes saying when it doesnt financially benefit them to keep developing for last gen tech, theyll phase those out. Can't blame them. Why keep burning money when it doesnt make sense?

Like, what would you do?

The way Sony typically does generations is the same reason why they're typically marketleader in the console space.

No dude. Just, no.

They want to keep the fanbase they already have in their ecosystem due to other, bigger players entering the gaming arena. Namely Google, Apple and Amazon. All three companies have the resources to do what Microsoft can do with their financial backing and cloud tech. The one thing that gives Microsoft the edge when it comes to those three, is Microsoft has decades of experience in gaming and a legacy. Whereas the only thing Sony has is games. As far as cloud tech and ridiculous assets and financials, Playstation is their bread and butter. Not the case with Microsoft and the others. Pr it may be. Doesnt make what it is any less true.

Sony isn't their concern because there is no competition anymore. It's over.

Maybe we should try it differently.

What if Hellblade 2 and The Initiative's game will be XSX exclusive?
I wonder how Phil will talk then.

If NT or Initiative were 3rd party instead of 1st, theyd be everywhere. As it stands now, that aint the agenda. But youd have to be daft to believe Hellblade II or the Initiative's game wont scream next gen, despite being crossgen.

this is hysterical. remember when Google entered the market and Stadia blew away the competition? I dont either because it flopped worse than the Wii U.

Remember when Amazon released their biggest game of all time? i dont either because they literally shut it down two weeks after launch because no one was playing it and went back into closed alpha.

If the landscape has changed, Switch wouldnt be the fastest selling console of all time. If the landscape had changed, the ps4 wouldnt have continued to sell over 100 million units. if the landscape had changed, all video game companies wouldnt have posted record profits during the coronavirus shutdown. this traditional older business model just helped sony sell $240 million worth of copies of tlou2 in 3 days. thats halo 4 numbers.

you are buying into this ridiculous notion that sony and nintendo isnt their main competition. if that were true, they wouldve announced the Xbox series x price already. they wouldve announced the lockhart already. they wouldn't have gone out and bought a half a dozen studios to shore up exclusives. he wouldnt have spent all that money on making the most powerful console because clearly apple and google arent even making consoles. his main competition is sony, and thats why he made a 12 tflops console. simple. if he really wanted to go after google, he wouldve built up datacenters with xbox ones and made xcloud an app you could connect from your ipad, your tv and your smartphone and game from there. you really dont need to make an xsx or a lockhart. you want to be the netflix of gaming? make it available on every platform.

but he doesnt. he knows he cant even if he wanted to. you have to understand, this guy says a lot of shit that is self contradictory. none of his comments make sense when put under the microscope.

Next year I predict Phil will say new things that MS are now focussing on XSX and Lockart and listening to their customers. ............Whatever.

Yep... telling console gamers that new generation launching with exclusive games is not what console gaming is about is just disingenuous and a PR exec that keeps disagreeing with himself back and forth depending on how the situation suits him and the sympathetic narrative he wants to generate.

I just have to wonder what will happen to the "pro consumer" and "we don't need generations" believers when year 2 and year 3 hit and the first party studio acquisitions are finally able to put out their next-gen only games. How can people not see that this is a short-term spin?

I agree with all of the above.

I feel that Mr. Spencer is making these statements purely because they (apparently) don't have any true "next generation" games ready for the release of Xbox Series X.

We all observed how Microsoft went on a huge shopping spree for development studios throughout the last 2½ years. I'm certain that all of these studios are hard at work on making Xbox Series X games, but these games take time to develop. Those games simply aren't ready yet. All they have for the rest of this year are games from their long established studios (prior to all these recent acquisitions).

Rather than releasing half-baked "next generation" games at system launch, they'll produce Xbox Series X updates for the Xbox One games that are already in the pipeline, and portray this as a"consumer friendly" strategy of "leaving no gamers behind". While there's nothing wrong with promoting cross-generation games, it is somewhat concerning that Microsoft didn't have at least some compelling new games that could properly convince consumers of the need to purchase a new system.

I expect that once the true next generation games have completed the development cycle, Mr. Spencer will suddenly change his tune, and we'll hear about how "you must get the new system to enjoy new and exciting interactive entertainment experiences".

You want to play on the latest hardware? He's built one for you. You just lost your job and don't want to upgrade this year but still want to be on game pass? He's saying you can without missing on anything.
Only you heard him say that upgrading was a bad thing. But that's cool, I'm sure freedom of interpretation is a right (I'll call it that rather than mischaracterisation).

I don't think HB or whatever initiative is working on is coming anything soon. I expect them to of moved onto series S and X fully by then.
Nah. We already know for at least the first year or two that 1st party games will be cross gen. Series X is back and forward compatible. Still, each one of those games will be stunners on Series X. Microsoft isnt going to give Sony an inch on the visual fidelity of games come next gen. No way in hell. The presser on the 23rd will be a display of that.

Hellblade has a Chance but initiatives game is likely 2022.

I don't think they will disappoint on series X but eventually Microsoft will drop support for bone and bone X.

I agree with all of the above.

I feel that Mr. Spencer is making these statements purely because they (apparently) don't have any true "next generation" games ready for the release of Xbox Series X.

Yes, this is exactly what is happening. The cross-gen games that MS is pretending to be "scaling down" are just Xbox One games getting shined up for next-gen while they work on actual next-gen software in the meantime. I've been saying it since the first day this absolutely brilliant PR spin started and the replies have always been entertaining.

Most games for the first few years on consoles start on previous hardware. This isn't new.

A few years into this current generation was November 2016. You seriously think that in late 2016 that "most games" were started on previous generation hardware? Where are you getting this idea from?

Youll be exactly right IF...the 23rd presser doesnt look next gen. But it will. Id get ready for a taste for crow if i were you. If one game will certainly be next gen, itll be Infinite. Even that will be crossgen. That says a shyte load. Like i said, we'll see in a couple of weeks.
