Incredible Ratchet & Clankgameplay demo reveals PS5’s SSD difference

But the full-blown execution of what "only on PlayStation 5" can look like finally crystallized for the first time on Thursday. It came in the form of six uninterrupted minutes of live gameplay from Insomniac Games' Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which will debut on the PS5 during the console's "launch window," we learned today.

Sony couldn't have rolled out a better, more convincing sense of what top-to-bottom next-gen gaming architecture can deliver than this shiny, explosive, SSD-powered sequence—and so far, it's more stunning than anything we've seen from Xbox Series X-exclusive fare.

If they want to show the difference, they need to show it on the competing hardware.

Otherwise it’s just a game running on its system.

How does it show the SSD difference exactly? What are they comparing it to?

The demo shows its player falling through purple portals and floating through a multi-dimensional rift for up to 1.5 seconds at a time, at which point an entirely new level appears, complete with ridiculous draw distances, insane amounts of geometry, and a dizzying amount of animated characters. This content hinges largely on PlayStation 5's solid state drive technology, which Sony has previously championed in terms of high levels of bandwidth.

I see, they hide the load time in the rift sequence. Just realized that by reading the article.

It's great, but they need to fix the obvious "seam" every time a new world is entered.

Yes, obviously. As fast as the SSD is, it still can't load 12GB (or whatever) of data INSTANTLY. It takes two seconds or so.

To be honest i thought it was odd that ratchet and clank would need to travel to separate rift to get to their destination. It makes sense now. :(

Can I ask you a question? Why is ars technica so jacked up about this demo, when it is same (but extended version) gameplay segment we saw 2 months earlier?

Maybe as it's confirmed now this is a live gameplay demo and the first one they could have interpreted as a target render csptured on PS5.

Sure, it’ll be a blank screen, while it’s competition is overheating And starting fires.

Such stupid.

You sound idiotic man, we all know Xbox was the hardware that suffered severe heating issues in the past. Have you forgotten the shitshow that was Xbox 360 and Red Ring of Death, where MS admitted they wanted to get ahead of Sony and thus launched their console despite being aware of the defects? That shit has never happened and will never happen on PlayStation. Also this overheating PS5 concern is the mother of all Fuds along with Tflop concerns.

The effect isn't lightning-instant, mind you, what with those 1- or 1.5-second pauses between dimensions

So it would be at most 2-3 seconds instead of 1-1.5 seconds on Xbox. Amazing difference!

The YLOD was the exact same overheating issue for the PS3 lol. They were both due to the new lead free solder having a lower melting temperature than the lead solder, so it was constantly melting and hardening, which led to it cracking and separating.

Yes please let us know when something actually is shown running on Xbox .. let alone something comparable to Ratchet.

The Y-LOD didn't cost SONY 3 Billion ... rofl.. Another pathetic soldier trying to defend MS in a PS5 thread.

ehh...Sony said before PS5 Showcase in June, that all gameplay footage is captured on PS5. So I really don't know how anybody could event think that R&C was a target render

I never got that argument. You try to argue that the PS5 is the better Hardware in terms of performance by saying the competition has no Software to show?
Besides "Rift-Loading times" being 2-3x longer on the Xbox Version, I don't see any reason why this wouldn't run as smooth on the Xbox? If you have some secret insider knowledge, please enlighten me.
Nonetheless, this is still a great looking game obviously and is nicely showing what kind of fidelity/quality we can expect from next gen games!

I'm curious to see how they are gonna use the ssd in horizon 2.

That game doesn't have reality warp tunnel to demonstrate the power of ssd, so what is gonna be the ssd feature in that game??

I believe with a little reworking Ratchet and Clank can (hypothetically) run well on a Series X, maybe with a few seconds more of loading, but also some perks like better iq and effects

For me is fast travel in open world games. It's when you notice the slow loading times. If a open world like this, with tons o details, makes fast travel in less than, I don't know, 3 seconds (instantly for me is something I don't believe) it will be next gen for me.

Ugh, i don't give a fuck about fast travel...i hope it's something more significant, maybe related to the gameplay.

There won't be that kind of 1.5 seconds loading on XSX becaue the machine has not being made for this.

It's going to be 3 or 4 times slower on Xbox. People have forgotten but they already demoed their SSD speed. XBox will have the same loadings as current high end PCs, no more.

As for example? I mean, what aspect of the gameplay (not loading or graphics) can improve fast SSD loadings?

I don't know, i'm not a dev and i don't know all the things a ssd can do in games.
Maybe having dinobot who don't stop when they pass a certain invisible line in the areas and they follow you everywhere so you can organize some dinobot fight club? The first horizon had this thing where dinobot stopped following you after a while, maybe ssd can give them more legs, i don't know :ROFLMAO:

The obvious one is flying mounts. I'm pretty sure they were hinting you can ride those pteradactyl looking machines in the trailer, plus the art released since.

Being able to fly genuinely quickly across a detailed map is a great use of this SSD, imo actually much more practical than the world warping in Ratchet.

Surely the best way to demo the ssd is just show spiderman load times on current and nextgen

Everyone will instantly see it (this will be the same for both consoles)

Yes, i totally forgot the flying mounts.

I hope they are in the game, they only showed the submarine part.

I believe that HZD only rendered where you were looking and "switched off" the world where you wernt, theres a really good video explaining it, not watched it for awhile

So I'd imagine the sequel would either not need to do this or can be bigger with plenty of underwater or caves, without loading, which seem to be the case

For people with no 4K screens, here are my screenshots of the compressed video:

Day time is more afternoon, was midday in reveal. Might have dynamic day/night? Razor sharp on focus with some out of focus effects:

vlcsnap-2020-08-28-13h11m47s318.png

Insanely sharp distant and close objects all the way to the moon with motion blur in some spots.

The and the one below showing accurate raytracing/GI compared to reveal.

Motion blur/out of focus effects with sharp focus on the tail. Accurate reflections.
