I'll take a very unpopular stand on this but if we're going to start boycotting sports every time an innocent or not really innocent but a camera is filming them gets killed then sports is going to end permanently.

Is not playing sports going to stop racial or criminal injustices? So then what are we doing here? I'm all for supporting the cause in a logical manner, this isn't it.

Somehow these guys forgot that basketball is their job, and their rich and famous lifestyles depend on them working.

Obviously they can do whatever they want, but on a very base level, if they want money, they need to play basketball. If Silver wants to have a sport to keep running into the ground, he needs to stop pandering to them and letting them boss him around and lay it out very simple.

Nah I agree. This does nothing nor does it make any statement and reading VanVleet's take about how he's hoping the Bucks owner steps up to put pressure on attorney generals and governers made me wonder what the hell he's thinking. There's no need to make this so complicated and muddle things by doing this.

Putting aside what deescalation of force should be for police and if seven bullets in the back is the best way to deal with an uncooperative citizen you are trying to put into custody, the media constantly asks players about these shootings. Team owners don't have to field these questions as regularly nor do other leaders of industry. It's obvious the player's messaging isn't helping enact the change they want to see. So they've escalated by boycotting games. For the people saying they'll not watch the NBA any longer, I doubt the sincerity of those words and if you do, your patronage will most likely not be missed. Of all the protests the country has seen, this is the most peaceful. If it helps bring about police reform that leads to be policing in our communities, I'd say that's worth sacrificing a few more basketball games in an already strange season (thanks 2020).

Will boycotting games help? Who knows. At least they aren't burying their heads in the sand and just giving weak platitudes.

My biggest question is if they go all the way and forfeit the rest of the season. I seriously doubt it, but I'd be really impressed if they do

All that said, fuck the league, owners (looking at you Cuban, letting Ted Cruz of all people dunk on you) and players for how they handled the Hong Kong situation with China. Except you Morey. Props to Daryl.

says GAF is a racist board but still wants to be a part of it...
Mad respect for the NBA players that's how things change. This action will have an impact for decades to come. This is totally unprecedented. Now owners will know that this can happen at anytime and they'll make sure to use their and reach to favor change.

This is NOT complicated. We're asking cops to stop killing or shooting black people for no reasons. Why a white supremacist terrorist is standing despite murduring people with a AR15, but an unarmed black man is shot in the back seven times.

If you're inclined to think an NBA boycott is going to change anything with regard to police shootings, then it's the owners who are actually facilitating it. The players are literally doing nothing and will collect their check next payday as if all the games were played as normal.

Plus, if what we're hearing now is true and it's not just one game but the rest of the playoffs that are in jeopardy, the players will also get to leave the bubble that they hate so much and return to their families and mansions. What exactly are they giving up here?

I'll respect the players when they actually sacrifice something (namely money) for the cause. And they'll have to, eventually. If this is the precedent, owners are quickly going to say if you don't play, we don't pay. This is still a business, after all.

And they'll sell the teams which will be sold off to hedge companies who don't give a shit about competitiveness and only the bottom line on rather the team is profitable or not.

There's practically no new Steve Ballmers emerging in the world when he bought the Clippers and he was old MS money. Bezos doesn't seem interested in owning a professional sports team.

What I see happening is a complete corporatization of NBA teams eventually. It might take a decade or two or three but no owners. Just hedge fund groups and the NBA decides what players should get paid versus team ownership and CBA contracts.

I can see the MLB going this route as well.

this boycott ain't gonna do anything to stop shootings. It's just a gloried PR stunt from the players, or worse, a ploy to end the season so they can leave the bubble (while still collecting their paycheck)

The NBA has already loss over a million dollars from yesterdays boycott. This will definitely hurt the players pockets so I am not sure what your getting at.

As a NBA fan it sucks to see this happen because the playoffs have been great so far and watching the games has been a big help in relieving a lot of my stress during these times but I respect the players for standing up for what is right.

This boycott brings more attention to the shootings which in turn can put more pressure on those in charge of making the real change. Did you see how much change happened due to the George Floyd protest?

oh we are lacking attention? why not burn these stadiums? that would get a lot of attention. why dont' they commit suicide on the court? that would draw the most attention ever. if that's what all this is about.

"Awareness" haha

BLM has reached Susan G Koman Breast Cancer levels of grifting at this point. Like who isn't fucking aware of what's going on right now when it's on the news every day?

"We need to build awareness of BLM by donating to....someone...for something. For Awareness!"

Just start randomly donating money to something. That'll fix it.

Unfortunately, the Floyd protests dont' bring any real changes and neither will the players's boycott, because they only focus on the result of the problem and ignores the overall big picture. It's not just racism but there's also other important lingering issues such as lack of gun control, underfunded education system, over-militarization of police as well as inadequate training etc. All of these contribute to all the shootngs we see today.

Sports is a form of escapism for many. Once you start getting political, you risk creating more division and thus backfiring your original intentions.

Those things are certainly concerns, but I truly doubt NBA players can really make a difference in any of those things.

How about this: A group of all-star players create a public service message where they encourage people to obey police instructions and under no circumstances resist arrest. Maybe they could get people to listen to something that would actually reduce police violence.

Obeying police instructions didn't do much for George Floyd or Philando Castile. Police reform needs to happen. People want to criticize the recent protests because of the violence and property destruction, but then turn around and criticize NBA players for boycotting games. How much more peaceful can you get than what these players are doing? And a major call to action from players like Lebron has been to emphasis how import voting is. The horror! Seriously though, having voices heard is important and the fact that George Floyd, Tamir Rice, Breonna Taylor, etc. are household names reinforces that.

What is next is also important. When Joe Rogan had Jocko Wilink on as a guest on his podcast recently, they had an excellent segment on police reform. While it didn't touch on elements like police unions and transparency, it did cover how to make our police offers better prepared for the jobs they do. It's also one of the few times that we've heard real solutions (mostly because Jocko isn't a politician going for a sound bite).

If George Floyd would have simply remained in the police car, he would be alive today (unless the Fentanyl would have killed him).

Pretty sure it was nine minutes of being choked out by a police officers officers knee. He probably deserved that for passing off a counterfeit note or his past criminal record though, right? Nice selective quoting though. Interesting.

Have you watched the video? The officers put him in the police car, he completely freaks out and escapes out the other side. If he would have just stayed in that car, the rest of the incident would have never happened.

Yes, I've watched the video. The officers then restrained him and then murdered him by suffocation. Was he wrong for struggling? Yes. Did he deserve to die? Who needs more training in that situation? The police or the suspect? Now explain Philando.

I'm in total agreement the officers need more training and they need to get rid of the knee to the neck technique. But once again, by simply obeying the officers instructions and not resisting arrest, this tragedy would have never occurred.

As for Philando, I'd never hear of it before you mentioned it. The video certainly does look bad for the cop, and I'm certain there are instances like this that occur. However, I still believe the vast majority of these tragedies (including Jacob Blake) would not have occurred if the suspect would have simply complied with the police.

Medical examiners/autopsy say there was no neck damage, and you can see Floyd moving while the knee is on him. I don't know how you can add those two up and still believe Floyd suffocated.

As to Philando...a jury found Yanez not guilty. I don't know WHY they found him not guilty though, because 100% of the reporting is based on the idea that Yanez was clearly in the wrong, just like in Floyd's case.

I don't know what happened with Philando, but the fact is neither do you, all you know is what you've been told. And if you still believe in the "police killed Floyd" angle, then I'm betting there's nothing that could be out there that would convince you of the innocence of any police officer anywhere.

You don’t need to have neck damage to be asphyxiated. You can asphyxiate by having a weight placed on your chest. Not sure what you think him moving proves.

The Hennepin county medical examiner, the Armed Forces medical examiner, and the independent examiner hired by the family all concur that George Floyd’s death was a homicide. If the police didn’t kill him, who did?

There is dash cam audio/video of the incident as well as the Facebook Live video his girlfriend captured out the police officer shot him seven times. The fact is I don't need anyone to tell me anything, there is footage of the incident. But by your logic, he probably didn't die because of being shot but rather because his break light was out or that fact that he was lawfully carrying a firearm and alerted the officer to that fact.

I don't hate police but thanks for painting me with that broad brush.

So... the NBA and its players pulled a publicity stunt by "striking" and ending the playoffs, and then quickly making a u-turn when they realized no one really gave a fuck the following day. Lmao. Talk about self-own. Adam Silver released a statement about what the NBA was gonna do to help the Blacks.... and it involved turning the team arenas into voting stations... lmao. And only 20% of the players vote.! HAHAHAHAHHAA.
