PS5 has coil whine

Buzz words are interesting, never heard the term coil whine before like last week now everyone says it everywhere.

My PS5 is literally silent compared to my PS4. Something's definitely whining.

It’s annoying when it happens. It’s not “normal”.

Not my video but my original Xbox One sounded like this only much louder. It could be heard through headphones six feet away.

Wow that does sound pretty bad. I feel for those that are having legitimate hardware issues, I hate returning shit.

Do you people play your games on mute or something? How in the hell can you hear stuff like this?
Why do you even have to ask weird question like that?

So you claim that every game ever releases outputs sound 100% of the time and there is not moments with not much of sounds going on in games?

Answer: of course there is lot of quieter moments in games, and not all games have background music.

My PS5 had really annoying coil whine on demons souls character creation screen + begining of bugsnax. In game (demons souls) there isnt, but fan is still audible on moments with less noise.

It is not loud at all, but just think about it: when we can hear mosquito or fly flying in apartment from loooooong distance, and they are really quiet, then why would we not hear noises that are similar/louder?

And normal people dont play on super loud volume (I know there are people whom wish/have hearing damage and use stupid 100% volume on every device, this is moronic) so sounds from games wont drown everything else.

Maybe some people have really bad hearing or really loud apartments (fans/traffic etc) so they dont understand it, but on normal quiet room any console is easily audible to the whole room, even switch.

Of course if you sit really far (+3m away) + have constant noises, it is not easy to hear it.

Then there are people whom lie that their console (any maker/model) is silent, which is impossible as moving parts make noise. "i cant hear it with my ear next to it" = you are half deaf.

PS5 in rest mode + usb charging = fan spins = I can hear it from 3-5m away.

And PS5 (at least mine) is the most quiet console (with fan) I have ever owned, except maybe switch .

Things dont have to be loud at all to be easily audible. Even whisper can be heard from other side of the room.

Almost every electronic device I have purchased in the last ten years has had some degree of Coil Whine. Be it a little or a LOT.

My monitor's Power supply, my Router, my PS4 Slim, even a USB charge hub. It's insane. I never had this probem in the 90's or early 00's.
coil whine happens to EVERY electronic device. like you say it can be a little that you don't even notice it or it can be a lot that it does your head in.

my monitor has a very very slight whine and my GPU will freak the fuck out if it's pushing 200+ fps.

my guess is that for PS5 these are either DEFECTIVE consoles or it is DESIGNED to be this way and people are more sensitive than others or it is designed this way and Sony did a poor job muffling the sound so it's something that could be improved with future hardware revisions. for example, i can't hear the coil whine off my GPU unless i take the side panel off. Sony might need to redesign the body of the PS5.

mine makes this noise on startup then goes whisper quiet anyones else do this i think its started happening after the latest update

That sounds like the sticker problem.

It's possible that the sticker is being pulled down (through the suction generated by the fan) when the console boots up as the fan's RPM are a lot higher at first, then it settles down which stops the sticker from being pulled down. Easiest way to quickly check would be to remove the side panel, hold down the fan with your finger and boot the system.

If the noise is gone with the fan not moving then it's the sticker, if the noise is still there then it's not normal and something else is broken.

Do you just cut the label with scissors whats the label even for dont want to be cutting something that shouldnt be lol
If I had this I'd just cut it off with a small scissor. Yes.

That sticker is holding down cables, it's not being applied properly if it's sticking out.

A console being a set hardware spec should never have coil whine. You get that with PC because you are mixing and matching various pieces of hardware running at varying frequencies. A console should be a known entity. My guess is that the variable clocks have made this a possibility where consoles have never had this issue.

You had to go there, fucking variable clocks? Haha, that's precious. Let's just forget it has been in some consoles this generation.

If you open your ps5 to fix sticker dont you void the warranty? Sometimes my Xbox One sounds like a 747 taking off for about 10 secs, but its only once in awhile. Sounds dont bother me all that much, but if its new in the warranty period...why not let them replace it if its bothering you.

My PS5 is suffering from Xbox cheerleaders whine. I wanted to pull it apart and fix it, but I just know it will go away in time.

Anyone tried the o ring under the screw trick?

Mine really isn't too bad only annoying if game is mute or you have left the PS5 on while do other stuff. Which I do. If the below fxes it there is no reason not to do it.

Well, I managed to reduce the sound by 70% by installing o-rings beneath the fan, small o-rings beneath the screws and left out the protective grill from the fan. I tried different o-ring configurations, only that one reduced the noise.
That was before I saw this video and now I'm torn... I didn't try the configuration that guy in the video did... should I try it with my PS5 which could result in more noise or settle with the reduced noise I now have and don't break it... choices...

Anything can have coil whine though, it's not like it's exclusive to PS5 or that all PS5's have it. Just luck of the draw.

6-7 years ago I built a new PC, everything was great but the PSU killed it for me. The constant, ever so slightly annoying sounds became untolerable after a few months and I replaced it. Luckily that's the only part I've ever gotten which had it. At least audibly for me.

After finishing Miles Morales, I started playing AC: Valhalla yesterday and was quite surprised: The noise level (which wasn't really that high to begin with, more on a "I can hear it, if I turn off the TV sound") got lower, now you can barely hear the console.
Hope it'll stay that way.

I’m happy with how quiet (not silent) my PS5 is but would be even happier with it if I’d never owned an Xbox One X.

Microsoft has raised expectations and Sony has not met them despite producing one of the quietest consoles since the mid 90s.

The most important thing is it doesn’t sound like it’s in pain like its predecessor did.

Mine is been shipped back to Sony. They had no issue with it been coil whine.

If you can hear it from play position it's not good IMO. Far worse than fans. I'm sure my PS5 was leaving a ringing in my ears after I finished a session 😂.

50% bigger console and we already have "noisey fan fix" videos a month from launch on top of the coil whine. Seems its going the Ps4 route. Quiet at first and then jet engine in a few months.

Maybe they get a revision soon before I get one. Only game Im looking forward to is DS but no rush to drop $500 for a remake.

Odds are about 15% of getting one with an issue according the poll. Totally understand the decision to wait though bud. However when it's working right it is an amazing experience 😉.

I had a preorder and gave it to a good friend who was trying to get one for his stepson. The fomo was real but I just said fuck it I'll wait for both till next year.

Just hope these things are addressed. I don't want to wait 3 years for a pro or slim tbh.

Console wars. The show must go on. 🤡

I need to make a video of my ps5 and show that it produces zero sounds, just like when people refused to believe me about my 2016 (second wave) being dead silent as well and showed the video.

Don't worry about the dust, that space is sacred and the maid is not supposed to touch it and accidently turn it on and spend hours without noticing it. I cleaned the spot, but before giving it away to my brother-in-law the vents were really covered with cotton-like dust!

I still believe that we get a different production line from one of those 3 factories of playstation because all ps4's here are silent. PS5 I don't know yet because not many got them and the ones I know have similar dead silent consoles. Should I make video then?

Yeah with either I'd go with a no hassle return retailer like Amazon, just in case. Add us on both when you do! 😁

I wonder if a future revision Sony will add a gasket between the fan and the case? Or maybe some vibration isolation washers around the base of the screws and make the screws just a bit longer?

My biggest concern with o-ring solution is unplanned additional stress on the plastic threads. If you're not careful you could easily over tighten them and break the threads now that you have all of this additional resistance. If you could get screws that were even a millimeter longer I would feel much better about this particular DIY fix.

Who cares if your single machine is silent? What does that prove? There are people who have noisy consoles who are looking for solutions. You bragging about how you're luckier then them doesn't help them find a solution.

Mine doesn't, It is dead silent (disc version) although I haven't inserted a disc since I always buy digital. One thing I noticed is that it expells a lot of heat.

Someone hinted that I was lying, which is not you indeed. This sets the standard for what's normal and what's not. A whine or any hearable sound isn't normal except if the person plays in a hot room or the console is cramped in a tight space.

Every piece of hardware with fans can make a noise. How far away from the console can you hear it?

I know the struggle though. My Xbox Ones power supply made an annoying high pitch noise when on resume because the fan was running inside it.

If it annoys you, send it back. The fan can be faulty, and if that's the case then it only gets worse from now.
