CD Projekt Red Emergency Board Call Recording Online: Refunds, Multiplayer, More

That is not how business works.

The action to cancel 3.5 million pre-orders will make you lose sales that were already guaranteed.
Not everybody will go to PC pre-order.
Not everybody will buy the game again (because they got mad).

You're assuming 3.5 million would all cancel their pre-orders. I don't think that would be the case necessarily.

Anyway, I think even that loss, with the opportunity to bring those sales back next year would have bene preferable to the situation they have now, no?

They now have to deal with massive refunds, a tanking meta critic score, which is SURE to affect future sales. Angry reviewers who are absolutely going to carry a grudge and probably bias their future coverage, a tarnished reputation, and a very toxic conversation around their flagship game. This shit is absolutely goign to be brutal for sales going forward and it will surely have an effect on any upcoming multiplayer stuff as well. Hell it's likely to affect how their next title is viewed, reviewed and received.

I don't give a fuck about peoples experiences playing this on a BASE last gen console.

You've had 7 years to buy a new console. Fuck off with catering to last gen and release the NEXT GEN patch immediately.

My PS5 shouldn't be giving me the same damn experience as a PS4 pro just with higher res.

Fix the damn thing on next generation.
Dude where is your empathy... Would you like to be forced to buy a PS5 Pro because games stop coming out on PS5?

This is not gamers fault. It's the greed of CDPR that made them publish the game on old consoles.

Let's be honest, who's going to really give a hit about 2077 MP in 2022 or 2023?
Just look at this thread, there will always be the fanatics.

Now, will the general audience care in 2022 or 2023, probably not, unless it's like really awesome (and given with the gunplay we have on offer here, it's doubtful it will be). But you will still have several threads proclaiming Cyberpunk MP is the bestest thing everest, that is guaranteed.

What a shit show. If I wasn't such a sucker for trophies I'd just buy it on PC, hopefully the enhanced PS5 version has drastically improved textures/NPC density or I might just skip it all together at this point.

Jesus christ man calm down lol

She was paid for her likeness, the company that paid her released a product that most people are considering a fraudulent scam for consumers which she had no control over.

A "holy shit" at a bad review makes her woke? lol

You're right. It doesn't.
Other statements from her might make that abundantly clear, though.

What this underlines is how pointless and counterproductive enlisting influencers is, apparently. If someone is prepared to present data showing otherwise, please feel free. The mother of all ironies is she herself acknowledged this by refusing to review CP2077, as she apparently felt she couldn't be impartial.

The point could hardly be any clearer.

No for sure not; but I think CDPR also had a bunch of pressure from investors..

Do you have evidence for that?

the game was in dev for like 8 years,

No. The game has been in development for 4 years and a half. Before that it was in pre-production, as most of the team was finishing Blood and Wine.

which means they probably took on loans 8 years ago from people expecting a return 2-3 years ago lol

I wouldn't know. But a statement from Badowski himself possibly hints at them running out of money.

They might have been facing some sort of financial penalty even if they waited longer.

Yup, it's possible they had contractual obligations.

Yep they wanted that money in the bank before the end of the year for whatever reason.

But then it begs the question, did it need to be 8 million pre orders? Say they delayed the console versions and only released the PC version and there were 2 million pre-orders on that platform, is that still not a healthy chunk of money to continue moving forward with?

Console pre-orders were in the neighbourhood of 40% of all pre-orders. Pre-orders apparently covered for marketing and development costs. Do the math.

Everything stinks of greed.

If the money is needed to keep them afloat, greed is not the right word do describe the situation.

No. 3.5 million pre-orders should be canceled by CDPR themselves.
At the moment you cancel a version it preorders needs to be automatically canceled.

You can preorder PC or next-gen version after.

Ohhh and there is a misconstruction here.

"Cancel the last-gen versions and release only on PC and next-gen".

CDPR didn't have time to work/optimize the last-gen version who said they will have time to work/optimize the next-gen version?
The game is rushed that is why the console versions are in that state... not because they can run the game.

Dev team needed more time even on PC.

I suggested a delay on console versions, not a cancelling of those versions.
My bad... I was talking about canceling the PS4/XB1 versions.
I agree delay was the best option.

Calling bullshit on this.

They made 41.9m USD in profit in 2019 alone. Revenues were in excess of 124.9m USD.

I think those jaguar cores are definitely atleast a reason why the game is buggier there and runs so bad.

The bugs are the same as PC with Zen 3 or Intel I don't know.
The bugs are bad, non-optimized, non-tested, etc code... in a single word: rushed.

Now if you say the game should be better (AI, graphics, etc) without the old-gen versions... then I agree because working on PC and next-gen hardware should widen the scope of the game but that is a option we will never see... the game code is already hold by old-gen hardware.

Abandon last gen and throw out some apology.
This game will need too many sacrifices for oldgen tech.

I would much rather them focus on beefing up the newer console and PC experience.
Better to have a couple great versions than all the versions being drug down to the lowest common denominator.

Which fiscal year will the lion share of the estimated 300 million USD development and marketing costs fall upon? 2019?

It’s not going to have any sacrifices. As in the call and OP, their only goal with the last gen versions is to make the game completable without crashing, not to keep tweaking to improve graphics, framerate etc.

Granted, those big patches to do so that are slated to come out in January and February no doubt means pushing the next gen upgrade patches back. But there won’t be any lowest common denominator factor here since they’re just working to get rid of crashes in the last gen version and it to provide any upgrades there.

I can live with that as I think the XSX version in quality mode is largely fine and it makes sense to get rid of crashing for last gen owners first as that’s a bigger issue and affecting more owners right now given the scarcity of next gen consoles and issues affect us next gen gamers too since we’re playing the BC versions currently

The refund thing bought CDPR absolutely zero favor or good will and just created a logistical nightmare for their profit partners. Worst decision throughout all this. The best they should have offered are refunds on GOG. IMO this was their greatest PR blunder in all of this.

While I don't think people should be playing this on PS4 and X1(it shouldn't have came out on them for obvious technical reasons), I still hope those who play on console get to play it in a playable state.

14 hours into it on PC and so far I would give it a 9/10, with the only issues so far being a random NPC in T-pose and an enemy not spawning.

Where does that say anything about money?

Development costs are ongoing and would be reflected on each financial statement while marketing and partnership contracts will be dependant on the payment terms.

CDPR devs: decent folks, trying to do their best.

CDPR execs: hammering cunts, each and every one of them.

Rinse and repeat for every game studio.
I think most studios are able to work with their exec team to ship playable games. The situation with CD PR is so much worse it reminds me of the disconnect between Bioware and EA. Clearly, bioware the studio was misleading EA and while EA ultimately bears the responsibility for rushing Andromeda and Anthem out before the end of their fiscal year, let's not forget that the dev team fooled EA execs into thinking that the Anthem demo was playable and would ship like that without any downgrades or bugs.

For Andromeda, the team was given 5 years to make the game and they shipped an incomplete game at launch. 5 years and they spent 3.5 of those years prototyping something that wasnt even included in the final game. Whose fault is that? EA, the dev team?

Sony has several studios that crunch. Cory and Neil have both defended crunch. ND especially seems to be a very messy place to work at. Like 14 out of 20 lead designers left during the development of TLOU2 and yet it still won GOTY and shipped with zero bugs. Had they launched in February like they had originally intended then they wouldve likely had similar issues. I remember GoW was delayed for around 5 months too and Shu once said that he played the game in December a few months before and was so dejected by the state of the game, he just got up and left the studio without saying anything.

But in both cases, the dev team needed to be honest with the Publisher and yes, ultimately its the publishers decision but devs have more clout than you think. I have been in meetings where i have asked for more time for my dev team and lost, but I find that more often than not, if you can make your case the execs will have your back. I highly doubt the CD PR execs knew just how bad the game ran on base consoles.

It's good that they acknowledge the problems. I have enough games right now so I put this one aside until next year. Not going to bother with a refund tbh, I'd just buy it again later.

Yeah I'm going to buy it again later as well... At less than half the price. The developers were already paid.... The investors can eat it. They'll fix the game and if they play their cards right it will be a "No Mans Sky" story by the end of next year.

Once they get the crashing solved, I imagine the DLCs will be fine as that’s likely just tweaking the engine and should be a one and done fix and the expansions will use the same engine. The MP, yeah I can’t see that coming to last gen consoles with it later for 2022 or later.

CDPR just really fucked themselves with this game. A huge budget AAA game with a long development time really needs to come out late in a console gen when there’s a gigantic console install base in order to sell enough copies to hit their investors‘ profit expectations. They ignored that and delayed things multiple times and ended up with a vision that just didn’t work on the consoles they started developing for and now have pissed off that huge base and are left with the small next gen early adopters who also aren’t entirely thrilled as they’re with BC versions with issues at launch and PC gamers.

They'll likely be fine as the game will have legs with thr DLC and as the next gen install base grows. But a lot of investors expect immediate profits on their investments so they’ll burn some of those guys who won’t be back to invest in their future games, so they will feel some ill effects they wouldn’t have if this had came out without the delays and ran fine on last gen consoles and got later next gen upgrades ala GTAV.

Seems that the main reason for so many bugs is the decision of casting of Keanu Reeves into the game AFTER the main story plot was 100% written. They had to re-write a lot of it to fit Johnny Silverhand into the story. At least is what this reddit theory says:

Incredible how quickly the façade slips. Darlings of the AAA top tier developers. Underneath they were the same as the rest.

It's almost like game companies are businesses like everyone else, and not magic temples staffed with enlightened entertainment demigods

Which freaking fiscal year?
2019?
Marketing costs - that usually outweigh development costs?

You don't think "But we’ve extended all other possible means of navigating the situation " is hinting at financial risks and pressures?

CDPR are primarily PC developers - that's their bread & butter since the days of using the Aurora engine. I suspect their experience with Witcher 3 - their first and only console title, lest we forget - led them to massively overestimate how much they could cram on the 1.4TB boxes that came out in 2013/14.

The Witcher 2 was also released on console (Xbox 360).

Doesn't make sense. Whatever is added as a storyline, new scripting, new animations, new models, is inherently a different team than the one handling the red engine's code foundation where we see weird physics/AI. It could have meant the initial delay from Q1 to Q4, maybe, but i don't think the engine would have been better prepared if it had released pre-Keanu Reeves.

It is 4.72m on PC / 3.28m on consoles being exactly.
It is not like console preorders are small.
Plus day one buyers are bigger on consoles than PC.

Its 60% on pc vs stadia, xbox one s, xbox one x, xbox series s, series X, ps 4, ps4 pro and ps5. PC absolutely dominates in this context. Its been locked at 1 million CC players for 4 days after release. That means its well over 10 million sales by now on steam alone. GOG was absolutely massive for W3, multiple millions sold there, in the context of 5 years ago. I expect this to be the case as well. Regarding this game, consoles will be a spitt in the ocean compater to PC. Nearly as if they dont even exist. Day 1 buyers and every other kind of buyers will all be nearly all on PC.

This is an equity research call not a Board call.

The ones asking these questions are equity research analysts trying to update their forecasts for the market which is why they are asking these questions in this manner.

They've been publishing updates on projections for the past few days.

I read the transcript this AM.

I am getting the feeling that the development of CP2077 was at least as dramatic as Halo Infinite.

Also respect for Ubisoft and their well oiled production line of WatchAssCry :messenger_smirking:

look guys maybe you don't need to invent a silly conspiracy theory to grok the difficulty inherent in producing

1. A BRAND NEW AAA OPEN WORLD GAME
2. WITH TOP OF THE LINE FEATURES FOR NEW PCS
3. AND PORTS ON 2 BRAND NEW NEXT GEN SYSTEMS
4. AND ALSO PORTS ON 4 LAST GEN SYSTEMS

like that is 7 different versions of the game they were responsible for!

im sorry, expecting them to get all 7 perfect right out the gate is pure gamer entitlement.

Yes, they could/should. But money talked.

And they also could have spent more time with optimizations before launch like, you know, they are going to do now until February

But the best option would have been to develop the game with last gen as the base for it. Like every other developer in the world does.

They had so many better options, and decided to choose the worst one. Their reputation is completely fucked in the consoles space.

Such an idiotic decision, to throw your reputation in the trash for immediate gains.

Bro......how is it that normal people like us can see this but highly paid executives can't? All for the PS4/Xbox One money? For what? For why? That money drain is leaving in 12 months anyway.

Another "centrist" take from a long lode of "centrist" takes.

Let's set aside the fact some of the management are also developers - case in point Cyberpunk 2077 Game Director Adam Badowski, who is also a board member. Not only does the usual oppressor/oppressed nonsense apply to CDPR, apparently is an industry-wide Pandemic of oppression.

Covid-19 ain't got nothing on Exploitation (TM).

Please do not bother FunkMiller with details. He has a point that dates back to the 19th century to get across and no factual info will ever get in his way.

Rewritting the game in 2018 is absolutely bonkers

They should have canceled the PS4 and Xbox One versions, put the game on PC, PS5, and XSX only.

Next gen user base is currently too small to do that and hit the profit targets they promised their investors. As I said above, they screwed themselves on that front with the super long development cycle, huge budget and letting their vision outstrip what the consoles they started developing for (well PC was always the first focus of course) when the game really needed to come out late in the PS4/X1 generation when they had a huge install base to sell the game to. That fact didn't change, hence forcing it out to that base even with the game in an awful state on last gen--and especially the base--consoles.

If they needed that much time and wanted to achieve this vision they probably should have just focused last gen on making more Witcher 3 DLCs as those would have sold a ton if the same quality as the two we got, and then taken the time to fully polish and finish (including the MP) Cyberpunk and release in in 2022 when there's more of a next gen install base in place.

Almost 60% of sales were on PC alone, I think they could have made it work.

I mean, look at the situation now, I think it is inarguable that taking that course of action would have worked better. Even if they “fix” the game on those platforms, the reputation hit to the game and the studio is unreal. It won‘t escape this.

I dont believe this happened in this way, had it they wouldnt have scrapt what they had, they would have just made the game longer (which it could use) and added in this part as a branch or the mid point to end. They would not have thrown away all the other stuff they worked on unless what they had was shaping up to be pretty awful. and the idea that they couldnt do DLC because of his availability? nothing about that makes sense, as they could have recorded him at that time and then worked on the DLC later, nothing would have required him to be available while they were making the DLC.

Bro......how is it that normal people like us can see this but highly paid executives can't? All for the PS4/Xbox One money? For what? For why? That money drain is leaving in 12 months anyway.

Investors only care about immediate return on their investment and they haven't been getting that as this game has been in development hell with multiple delays which keep pushing the date for investors to get their returns.

If they'd canceled the current gen versions that would reduce copies sold a ton, reduce the return on investment and they'd have an uproar from investors already likely pissed at the multiple delays.

So they were kind of damned if they do, damned if they didn't. Cancel last gen versions (or delay again to polish more) and piss off their investors and have many unwilling to invest in future games. Launch as they did, and burn a lot of good will among gamers and risk longer term harm. They probably weighed those and decided the former was the bigger risk and gamers are largely used to games being rough at launch and fixed later these days.

Not saying that's right, just is what it is with development and release of huge budget, AAA games from investor funded studios/publishers. If a studio wants nearly unlimited budgets and time to achieve their vision, selling and becoming an first party studio is the way to go. The platform holders are desperate for super polished exclusives to sell their consoles and get people locked into their ecosystems and services and will take the hit. Otherwise the pressures are all going to be to make a quick, huge profit and meet promises made to investors above all else.

Wild how quickly CDPR burned up the goodwill they had built up over the last decade

I'm cautiously optimistic that they'll turn this around. While I take some issue with the construction of their apology, they do seem motivated to fix the situation. Presumably they can get last-gen versions to an at least playable state, and deliver next-gen quality eventually. Players will forgive a bungled launch if the devs stick with the game and make it good (see: No Man's Sky).
