Warcraft 3 / Frozen Throne for me.

I've played it more than any other game. Played it almost daily since launch (with a few breaks here and there). Still love it, always will.

VERY CLOSE runner ups include the original Starcraft and Age of Empires 2.

They all just scratch very different itches (macro vs micro).

I have to pick Age of Mythology. Very unique factions and a epic grand mythological story campaign incorporating multiple myths. God powers are sick. Best RTS I've ever played to this day.

Rise of Nations has the most refined mechanics with influence from Civilization. Even though it lacks a proper campaign it is the best of the sum of its parts and is the one other RTS I would say exceeds Age of Empires 2.

Of course, Age of Empires 2 is still amazing, even more so with the Definitive Edition.

Likewise, Warcraft 3, Starcraft and Homeworld are also up there in the best RTS ever made group.

I don't play multiplayer but Starcraft 1 > 2 campaign wise.

Starcraft 2 was all about time limits. You could never play at your own pace, somehow a mission would just end in a way. Also the CPU would never create bases, everything was per-installed. Complete trash.

I was just thinking about RTS games and their future last night. We do have AoE4 coming which hopefully kickstarts interest again, but it's been pretty thin for a few years.

I admit it's because it hit the perfect nostalgia age, but AoM is still my favorite, I loved the setting and music, after AoE4 I hope they revisit that

I've been playing a lot of RTS games lately.

Of the ones I've been playing. I still can't stop with the Total War series. So glad I finally discovered these games.

TOTAL WAR. Don't want that partial war bullshit.

Total Annihilation was simply phenomenal for its time. Supreme Commander is pretty the same, but better, but... Total Annihilation was dope.

Games you could add in the poll are TA: Kingdoms (not that anyone would likely vote for it anyway), Command and Conquer Generals/Zero Hour, and Act of War/High Treason (the AI was amazing, if nothing else). although, if you can, fix the typo in Total Annihilation. :messenger_anguished:

From what I played WarCraft III was the best and most advance one.

Followed by the first Starcraft as a runner up.
Agre of Empires 2 was pretty great but not on the same level of these two names I listed.

PS. WarCraft II is classic too.

Voted Dawn of War because I knew Warcraft III was going to get enough votes anywa.

But its between those two.

Warcraft 3 is probably the best Singleplayer RTS of all time though.
It and all the expansions are borderline perfect add in those awesome CGI cutscenes.....mate.
When I heard World of Warcraft wasnt Warcraft 4 I cried in nerd.

And The Frozen Throne is one of the best expansions I every played in my life.

I know World of WarCraft made way more money to Blizzard but I'm really sad we never saw a sequel for the RTS game.

"What began as a conflict over the transfer of consciousness from flesh to machines escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds. The Core and the Arm have all but exhausted the resources of a galaxy in their struggle for domination. Both sides now crippled beyond repair, the remnants of their armies continue to battle on ravaged planets, their hatred fueled by over four thousand years of total war. This is a fight to the death. For each side, the only acceptable outcome is the complete elimination of the other."

And everyone who voted for any other game is wrong! Also IMO best soundtrack composed by Jeremy Soule.

Dawn of War is a great RTS for sure. I still run across people who claim Warhammer 40K ripped off StarCraft.

I voted for C&C RA for RA2 but my favorite of all time is generals. They got the movement speed just right and the rocks-paper-scissors interplay perfect. All of the units were relevant for finding a quick way to shred whatever your opponent throws at you.

For recent games, I have more time on Dawn of War III than I can believe, that was likely the high point of graphics, animation, and sound for RTS.

Any of you TA fans get into the mod scene? I followed it pretty faithfully from the beginning (when Cavedog was releasing units) up through the bigger mod-packs, TA Escalation, TA Frenzy, Spring engine, etc.

SupCom was a good no-nonsense update but I still prefer the balance and the soundtrack of TA. SupCom feels too sprawling at times.

I have played more than half of that list and love those games. If I had to choose the GOAT? Then it would be Starcraft. My personal favorite was WC3. Homeworld 1 has a very special place in my heart but I would rank cataclysm to be my third place title.

What!?

That game it's a crippled version of the original Dawn of War, and a ripoff of the Starcraft II sisyness' graphics. The gritty graphics of the first is gone, the awesomeness of the voice acting of the first is gone, the oomph of the sound effects from II is also gone in III.
Don't even make me get started on the moba-esque multiplayer objectives.

The only thing I can congrats on Dawn of War III is bringing base building back. Everything else is a clusterfuck.

Too right another Warcraft RTS would have been all i needed in my life.
Frozen Throne was a sequel quality expansion.......funny the other expansions that I absolutely loved were from my actual vote in this thread Dawn of War

Here's the burning question on my mind:

which RTS has the best unit sounds of all time?

wololo rogan?

Need a light?
Best sound as in "most stuck in mind" or best sound design?

Voice acting and sound design wise, Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War might be the best voice acted game, not only in RTS, but in general, of all time. And I'm not even exagerating here.
