Dawn of War 2 beats it on all three points though... and even the first one, on animations and sound...For recent games, I have more time on Dawn of War III than I can believe, that was likely the high point of graphics, animation, and sound for RTS.
That's extra funny because Warhammer is still ripping from everything they can, but if there is one thing then never ripped anything from it's Starcraft. xDDawn of War is a great RTS for sure. I still run across people who claim Warhammer 40K ripped off StarCraft.
Still TA.Here's the burning question on my mind:
which RTS has the best unit sounds of all time?
wololo rogan?
Need a light?
Added. The Myth series never gets any love in these threads.
So, I say Myth.
Best sound as in "most stuck in mind" or best sound design?
Voice acting and sound design wise, Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War might be the best voice acted game, not only in RTS, but in general, of all time. And I'm not even exagerating here.
That would fall in the "most stuck in mind" category, as we would remember the most we played because they were repeated constantly.Relic is legendary when it comes to sound design. I'd argue that Homeworld and Company of heroes are also candidates for best sound design and most stuck in mind.
I was thinking of unit-sounds specifically. One thing I loved about RTSs was all the little movement, "roger", taking damage, etc noises the soldiers would make. I forget who was first, but the units in Warcraft were the first ones I remember having "easter egg" noises if you kept clicking on them. Maybe Command & Conquer was first, I forget.

I couldn't possibly disagree with you more strongly. I like DoWII a lot but its graphics and sound effects have aged poorly.Dawn of War 2 beats it on all three points though... and even the first one, on animations and sound...
You can't put that there mi'lord.Stronghold Crusaders
With Supreme Commander I totally forgot about Ashes, I'll add it.The best was left off your list. It's ashes of the singularity: escalation. No other gaming AI has matched it (without cheating). This is really the definition of man vs machine in it's purest form. Don't sleep on it or you'll miss out on the best RTS of all time.
That doesn't sound very excitingBACK IN MY DAY,
we had to read match reviews on the web, with a few screenshots.
Yeah, I have to agree. The sound design and animations are absolutely phenomenal in DoWIII.I couldn't possibly disagree with you more strongly. I like DoWII a lot but its graphics and sound effects have aged poorly.
The attention to detail in every Elite animation in DoWIII is incredible, especially the Wraithknights jumping over armies. It sucks the sync kills are gone but you can't even compare them to what they pulled off in DoW3.
The RTS genre basically died around that time.I'm only casually into RTS and only like them in Single Player (or occasionally in VS against friends).
I love Battle For Middle Earth 2.
I just really like the big armies and the visual spectacle, it really nails the look and feel of the battles in the movie. The races feel pretty varied and distinct and there's even a fun hero system.
I've been searching a long time for a new RTS that scratches the same itch but there just don't seem to be any.
Spellforce III? Dawn of War III?I'm only casually into RTS and only like them in Single Player (or occasionally in VS against friends).

Spellforce III? Dawn of War III?
That was my second option, and I'm surprised it doesn't have more votes on the poll.Objectively - Company of Heroes 1
Nostalgically - Warcraft 3 or Broodwar
I have to pick Age of Mythology. Very unique factions and a epic grand mythological story campaign incorporating multiple myths. God powers are sick. Best RTS I've ever played to this day.
Rise of Nations has the most refined mechanics with influence from Civilization. Even though it lacks a proper campaign it is the best of the sum of its parts and is the one other RTS I would say exceeds Age of Empires 2.
Of course, Age of Empires 2 is still amazing, even more so with the Definitive Edition.
Likewise, Warcraft 3, Starcraft and Homeworld are also up there in the best RTS ever made group.
They have made the Definitive Editions for 1-3. 4 should be their focus now.Holy shit. There is an Age of Empires 4 in the works, took their sweet fucking time on that one.
As far as i know, ensemble studios broke up after making halo wars, at least in their original configuration, so I'm surprised aoe4 is getting made at all, let alone whenHoly shit. There is an Age of Empires 4 in the works, took their sweet fucking time on that one.
Dawn of War III is totally hecticHaven't checked out Dawn of War III.
II sort of missed that large scale army feeling of Battle for Middle Earth, is 3 more like that?
I'm not familiar with Spellforce, I'll check it out.
And yet, such awful reviews that whenever i see it, no matter the cost, i can't convince myself to play it ahead of any of the other games I've got goingDawn of War III is totally hectic
If you're an RTS player, you should give it a try. Game's not bad at all. The thing is, it's just a bad Dawn of War game compared to what the series have achieved. And yet, such awful reviews that whenever i see it, no matter the cost, i can't convince myself to play it ahead of any of the other games I've got going
I gotta say, i would offer up World in Conflict, child of Ground Control, by Massive Entertainment, for having pretty fantastic sound effects (among much else), I'd make World in Conflict my #2 or #3 but i am not sure it would be worth it/get any more votes..Relic is legendary when it comes to sound design. I'd argue that Homeworld and Company of heroes are also candidates for best sound design and most stuck in mind.
