Dawn of War is a great RTS for sure. I still run across people who claim Warhammer 40K ripped off StarCraft.

Feeling Dumb Jim Carrey GIF
That's extra funny because Warhammer is still ripping from everything they can, but if there is one thing then never ripped anything from it's Starcraft. xD

Here's the burning question on my mind:

which RTS has the best unit sounds of all time?

wololo rogan?

Need a light?
Still TA.

I honestly can't believe AoE had so few votes with how influential it was to the historical RTS genre and even Grand Strategy in some cases. That's crazy considering the existing playerbase for the original editions are still very active.

The best was left off your list. It's ashes of the singularity: escalation. No other gaming AI has matched it (without cheating). This is really the definition of man vs machine in it's purest form. Don't sleep on it or you'll miss out on the best RTS of all time.

Best sound as in "most stuck in mind" or best sound design?

Voice acting and sound design wise, Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War might be the best voice acted game, not only in RTS, but in general, of all time. And I'm not even exagerating here.

Relic is legendary when it comes to sound design. I'd argue that Homeworld and Company of heroes are also candidates for best sound design and most stuck in mind.

I was thinking of unit-sounds specifically. One thing I loved about RTSs was all the little movement, "roger", taking damage, etc noises the soldiers would make. I forget who was first, but the units in Warcraft were the first ones I remember having "easter egg" noises if you kept clicking on them. Maybe Command & Conquer was first, I forget.

That would fall in the "most stuck in mind" category, as we would remember the most we played because they were repeated constantly.

.Pennywise .Pennywise If that's the case. I would have to say Total Annihilation wins that category for me. All the buzzes and boops of those units are carved into my brain due to the billions of hours and sleepless nights I spent on it.

Dawn of War 2 beats it on all three points though... and even the first one, on animations and sound...
I couldn't possibly disagree with you more strongly. I like DoWII a lot but its graphics and sound effects have aged poorly.

The attention to detail in every Elite animation in DoWIII is incredible, especially the Wraithknights jumping over armies. It sucks the sync kills are gone but you can't even compare them to what they pulled off in DoW3.

With Supreme Commander I totally forgot about Ashes, I'll add it.

What a difficult question! I have almost played all of them.

Homeworld definitely has a special place in my heart, for the fans, rewatch this great scene:

Very fond memories as well off Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, KKND.

Company of Heroes is probably the best RTS Ive played recently, both 1 and 2.

Special mention to C&C generals, not the best but oh was it fun. 'China will grow larger!'

Yeah, I have to agree. The sound design and animations are absolutely phenomenal in DoWIII.

Regarding OP's question, I would rather die than to pick from all those games. BUT if I were held at gunpoint then today I would pick Total War (because of Shogun 2) but tommorow it might be Dawn of War or World in Conflict and on Thursday it will probably be Age of Empires 2 or StarCraft)Warcraft.

Single Player yoiu can have some discussion. maybe you prefer Command and Conquer Series. Acceptable for sure.
Multiplayer the winnner has to be Broodwar though. It paved the way for other competitive games and it was played for more than a decade on Iccup or Brainclan.
Warcraft 3 TFT would be my second choice with its giant scene in China.

God can't believe I forgot about Red Alert 2, aka the game where you can have tanks disguised as trees or just throw 20 prism tanks at enemy bases and watch them vaporize in slow motion as the FPS collapses.

Also loving the shoutout to Stronghold Crusader. Both Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader are the best castle builder games. Still disappointed the sequels were so garbage, especially when 2 introduced lots of mechanics that would have been awesome if done well but were instead horribly implemented.

I would enjoy remakes of Battle for Middle Earth/Rise of Legends. The demo for Rise of Legends was a steampunk dream come true. Both look like very interesting takes on RTS, only they are obscenely expensive and or difficult to find.

I was actually looking forward to a remake of Warcraft 3, but alas Age of Empires 2 DE/C&C Remaster/Homeworld 1/2 Remasters probably all collectively took its karma.

I'm only casually into RTS and only like them in Single Player (or occasionally in VS against friends).
I love Battle For Middle Earth 2.

I just really like the big armies and the visual spectacle, it really nails the look and feel of the battles in the movie. The races feel pretty varied and distinct and there's even a fun hero system.
I've been searching a long time for a new RTS that scratches the same itch but there just don't seem to be any.

The RTS genre basically died around that time.

Spellforce III? Dawn of War III?

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Starcraft and it's not even close. It was probably my first game on my own PC and man, it hooked me from the start. The story, the lore, the different factions... man, even the music was the shit.

Nostalgic chills man. :messenger_sunglasses:

Haven't checked out Dawn of War III.
II sort of missed that large scale army feeling of Battle for Middle Earth, is 3 more like that?

I'm not familiar with Spellforce, I'll check it out.

I miss the good old days in the late 90s when a new RTS was released every few weeks.

Even though StarCraft and Warcraft 3 (until they fucked it up) are the games I've returned to over the years, I still think Age of Empires 3 is the best of genre even though I only played it the once through. It didn't exactly hook me in a addicting way but the pacing of it was just fantastic, pure perfection. I spent the best part of the last decade, since I played it for the first time waiting for Age of Empires 4 and it never came so I never returned to that game nor does it have an nostalgia in my mind like Warcraft or Starcraft to get me to return, now but nothing ever topped it. Starcraft 2, was a majour disappointment and every new release since has been too much for my laptop to play in any sort of decent way but I've read great things about Frost punk which I've been meaning to pick up since it dropped on PS4.

My next RTS will be Fire Emblem three houses however and if all I've read is true, it'll reach best in genre for me.

I have to pick Age of Mythology. Very unique factions and a epic grand mythological story campaign incorporating multiple myths. God powers are sick. Best RTS I've ever played to this day.

Rise of Nations has the most refined mechanics with influence from Civilization. Even though it lacks a proper campaign it is the best of the sum of its parts and is the one other RTS I would say exceeds Age of Empires 2.

Of course, Age of Empires 2 is still amazing, even more so with the Definitive Edition.

Likewise, Warcraft 3, Starcraft and Homeworld are also up there in the best RTS ever made group.

Frankly the Myth units ended up being super fun and overall they just nailed every aspect of the game. Loved this game & still my #1 RTS easily. Also got a soft spot for Stronghold Crusaders & Empire Earth.

There are still tournaments today for Broodwar, a game that released in 98'.

1. Broodwar
2. Frozen Throne
3. Sc2
4. everyone else

Basing this on the skill and depth of gameplay. That said, theres an astonishing number of high quality RTS games out there (unfortunately almost none in the last decade).

Holy shit. There is an Age of Empires 4 in the works, took their sweet fucking time on that one.
They have made the Definitive Editions for 1-3. 4 should be their focus now.

Though I doubt I am the only one hoping a new Age of Mythology DE is next.

Age of Empires 2. Star craft is a worthy winner, but for me AoE2 is the definitive RTS. Other good entries include Rise of Nations, age of mythology, Homeworld 1 and 2

Edit: Warcraft 3, to be honest i just have trouble seeing this as an RTS, i know that is totally bullshit but for me it is, like, an arcade RTS, RPG hybrid.. that's not to belittle it, i love that game as much as any other game mentioned here..

As far as i know, ensemble studios broke up after making halo wars, at least in their original configuration, so I'm surprised aoe4 is getting made at all, let alone when :p

I'm cautiously optimistic, i don't wanna shove my opinion down anyone's throats but aoe3 was a disaster for me...

And yet, such awful reviews that whenever i see it, no matter the cost, i can't convince myself to play it ahead of any of the other games I've got going
If you're an RTS player, you should give it a try. Game's not bad at all. The thing is, it's just a bad Dawn of War game compared to what the series have achieved.

I gotta say, i would offer up World in Conflict, child of Ground Control, by Massive Entertainment, for having pretty fantastic sound effects (among much else), I'd make World in Conflict my #2 or #3 but i am not sure it would be worth it/get any more votes..
