Replacement PS5 has coil whine worse than the first

Concern

I couldn't hear any coil whine on my PS4 Pro over the fan noise. I guess Sony solved one problem and introduced another. The fans on PS5 are pretty quiet, not XSX quiet, but quieter than PS4 for sure and I guess that is what really matters.

No lie my ps4 is the reason i started playing with headphones lol. Now I can't play without them. But imma watch the ps5 thing play out for awhile before grabbing one.

Hopefully there's a revision at the very least soon since I doubt we'll see a pro or slim in less than 3 years minimum.

Even if you do get coil whine headphones would be an easy way around it.

What I'm wondering is if coil whine will lead to a RROD kind of situation with the system.

The PS5 has only been out 1 month or so, and there isn't even a definitive cause yet for those who are experiencing it. There's no way to tell at this point if it will lead to anything like RROD or anything else.

I've been burned buying launch hardware since PS1 and it has taken me until now to smarten up and wait it out. It will be interesting to see if Sony releases a revision or if the issues just get better.

No, it's not a defect. All coils whine, it's just a matter how much you isolate that noise.

That makes a lot of sense. I haven't heard of wide spread hardware failures so it's probably "safe" to get a PS5.

As for the coil whine, if it's just noise I can deal with it. I never game without my headphones so it will never be an issue for me.

This thread made it seem like it was console breaking though which is why I asked.

Many of us don't want to play with headphones or other people are in the room etc. A constant irritating buzzing isn't that far off console breaking IMO.

No chance.

For those that have it, its a discomfort or annoyance and their choice to get it replaced. But from a technical standpoint, it shouldn't negatively affect the performance of the system.

I don't see that issue being on par with a bricked console though. Now I don't own a PS5 but it certainly can't be louder than my Pro even with coil whine.

Sounds like it's just a nuisance for some people. I know I'll be fine with it as long as it doesn't exceed my Pros noise levels.

For some people this noise is super irritating and it seems like it's something wrong. Hopefully Sony will offer some revision with better isolation of coils.

Improvement will always be good but it isn't an issue that can stop me from playing the system. I'm also wondering how loud it gets though because the videos that I've seen don't really give me a good idea.

I wouldn't be able to hear the coil whine with headphones correct?

With my Pro I can sometimes hear the console even with headphones.

And if I do get cool whine does it mean my console will expire soon?

Really tying to see if there's a RROD kind of situation with the PS5. I don't think there is but after reading this thread I'm not so sure.
At this point coil whine is simply an annoyance. How much you can hear varies on multiple factors. Normally you shouldn't be able to hear it if you are wearing headphones. If my PS5 was in a cabinet 10+ feet away I doubt I'd hear it but alas I am much closer.

Even though I game on my monitor I probably won't hear the coil whine with headphones on.

Maybe in the silent parts of the game but I doubt it.

The console should be alot quieter than my Pro. At least that what the videos say.

Think of it less in terms of loudness (fans are noisier) but its lower pitched and alot more annoying. I'd rather a loud fan any day (I.e my Pro).

Why would it be worse if it's harder to hear?

That's something I don't understand.
Different tones are perceived differently, problem with coil whine is that it changes rapidly with frequency and it's not static noise on +/- same frequency, which ears pick up way easier than constant white noise. If that make sense.

Mine has a "little" noise coming from it, at first I thought it was coil whine but it could just be the fan. At any rate we all have a one year warranty so don't stress it.

Well on the eve of another UK lockdown my third PS5 has been dispatched.

Despite the neogaf poll been at about 15% with hardware issues I've got no confidence it's going to be any better. Definitely not getting my hope's up.

It's just going to be a decision if I can put up with it or not I'd wager and if not return and jump in at some later point when the issues are resolved.

Mine is so bad you can hear it down the hallway even with the door shut. I wouldn't want to subject the rest of the people in the house to that. People keep acting like this is an issue that only some people can hear and that isn't the case with the two of mine.

I wonder if anyone would consider applying heat-resistant acoustic sealant around the problem area in the PSU. Seems like just enveloping the capacitor/capacitors that are causing the noise should fix the issue. Seems pretty easy to get into the PSU if you're comfortable working with electronics (though honestly I'd just get it exchanged under warranty at this point). I do like tinkering with things so someone else like-minded must have thought the same thing.

I drove a '96 Ford Contour (shittier NA version of the Mondeo) with an SQ competition-grade sound system in it in the 90's and I managed to eliminate every buzz, squeak and rattle in the entire piece of shit car (notorious rattle trap) over the course of the three years I owned it. That car taught me that if it makes noise, you can make that noise stop.

I wouldn't recommend it as a diy project unless you know how to discharge the caps in the power supply.

Ok then THE BIG update. Third Playstation 5. Let's see the results...

NO FUCKING COIL WHINE 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

I AM SO FUCKING HAPPY.

It's been such a long road. I hope this puts an end to all PS5s are the same bullshit.

If anyone else isn't happy with the performance of theirs I fully recommend keep swapping it until you are. Just bear in mind it might take a few swaps as it did with mine. Gaming on it is night day better. As a massive Sony fan I can FINALLY enjoy the new console. 😁😁😁

What fan does it have? Let’s see if that can somehow be a reason where the components are both cheaper.

What's the manufacture date of that PS5?

Nice ! Makes sense to me, because I have zero coil whine on mine, so I guessed you could find one without coil whine too.

There was some debate that certain people are more sensitive to it. That probaby true but if you are not all PS5s are built equally!

I've gone straight from work, to home to a movie night. So fans and serial numbers incoming tomorrow first thing!

Ps did I mention NO FUCKING COIL WHINE!!

I told you, 3rd time is the charm. Congratz, it was worth the hassle and the wait to get a perfect console that will serve you for many years, was it not?

Now quit posting and get playing :messenger_beaming:

My new model is the fan from the official Teardown video. Not sure if that's good or bad? The unit has been near enough silent in everything apart from Spiderman MM 60fps modes. There it's not ideal. Strange as Demon Souls 60 fps was fine. Like you know the console is on but it wasn't annoying.

Is it from Japan? Anyway congrats on this ordeal, may the console serves you long a quietly : )

My console is dead quiet at times, but will make the occasional coil whine noise or I can hear the air leaving the console for random extended periods of time. Very similar to my laptop which is usually dead quiet with the occasional coil whine noise or breath out
The coil whine noise or air out is usually very low (only hear it in dead silence) or can be annoyingly loud
It's gotten better over time and is quiet most of the time though last night was the worst I heard it since the first day I got it
I am completely addicted to my PS5 and I am willing to wait it out a bit to see if the issue continues to become less of a problem over time. Otherwise I might eventually send it it for a completely quiet unit at all times if this random coil whine noise issue continues.

My PS5 that i've had for well over a month now continues to be dead silent at all times, even after playing Demons Souls for hours. I've played games, watched movies, everything.

I only hear a faint fan noise if i get up and literally put my ear right next to it after playing Demons Souls for hours. Counting my blessings for sure that i have one of the good ones seeing some of the stuff going on in this thread.

It’s gotta be the correlation with sourced components being subpar from that factory. I have the teardown fan as well and my system is quiet. That’s why I asked originally so we can get more input on this. At least it’s something to look out for and a quick spot. Just sucks you have to open the packaging to check. Too bad there isn’t a way to tell from the label. Is it possible that fan uses more power and causes the coil whine? I don’t know enough to know, but there’s a connection between that fan and the whine.

Mine's the same, dead silent even with hours of demon's soul. However, GG Hostile_18 to finally get a decently quiet one. (y)
I'm pretty sure as revision goes that problem will be tone down, and even now most of the PS are actually quiet but if you're on the bad side of the lottery it must really suck.

I wonder if it's something that could be patched for everyone? Like lessen the power draw just made more efficient via code... or am I talking out my arse 😂. I mean say Valhalla runs silent on Series X and noisy for most people on PS5, the game itself is exactly the same on both formats in terms of graphics on screen (within a tiny differential etc).

I've never had any luck with Sony 'support' in the UK. Utterly fucking useless

Good luck.
Same in Canada.

Sony has the worst CS of all the tech companies that I've experienced and is much worse than the likes of Acer, Asus, MSI, etc. Dealing with Sony CS feels like I'm interacting with some no-name electronics company with zero CS budget.

Well PS5 has variable clocks for maximum power efficiency, but I don't know if that's a factor. It seem to be tied to the fan type, which is not very logical either for a coil whine issue... :messenger_confused:

I tried Valhalla 60fps and it's not good on that either. I love Sony exclusives, prefer the controller but don't think I can game on this anymore. Its fucking horrible buzzing on 60fps modes (apart from Demon Souls). Such a horrible position to be in got thousands tied to my account, Naughty Dog are my favourite developer but I can't fucking stand it. Three consoles and although this is the best one yet it's still not acceptable. Thing is two of my close friends have one and they dont notice theres making a noise.. I've gone through three in a row. I don't understand how people can prefer this over fan noise.

No game and 30fps games and certain 60fps games its spot on. I honestly don't know what to do anymore.

My return window is 31st Jan. So I'll play the exclusives, see if it changes and go from there.

I feel really let down with Sony and was so happy with the PS4 and Pro for the last 7 years.

Sorry to hear this, but here's a suggestion: I know how much you love Sony exclusives and it sounds like it doesn't give you problems on those, why don't you use the PS5 as a Sony exclusive box? I think you'd wind up very unhappy if you have to forego the games/series you love so much.

The vibrations coming from the disc drive and producing this noise makes it even more obvious to me that the disc drive version was an afterthought.

You can "fix" this, though, by putting a folded sheet of paper between disc drive and faceplate, or anything that tightens this up a bit.
I deleted both COD and Spiderman. I then readjusted my stand as I have the console sitting horizontally. I re-installed both games with the disc drive spinning like crazy, and no vibrations this time! I'm going to assume the stand was ever so slightly off. I hope!
