Replacement PS5 has coil whine worse than the first

Well my second exchange is sorted, they are going to fast track it.

The experienced CS I spoke to didn't believe Coil Whine was real, that it is always the fan been noisy, rather than anything else.

Here's my photos as requested. @FrankWza

I'll bet a bollock that the tab holding the wires in the first photo has gotten slightly deformed under tension and is making a noise...

Is that something that can be fixed on the users end of it is? 😊
Mebbe bend it back. :messenger_beaming:

But fuck knows, just looking at it if it's bent lower down it might be vibrating at the frequency of the fan.
I had a massive fan in my room for sleeping (you're a cruel mistress, tinnitus) and for a week it was making a humming noise that was driving me mad. Turns out one of the catches that held the cage on hadn't been shut and that was vibrating the whole bloody thing. Harmonics are a weird and annoying beast.
EDIT: Probably make sure the whole thing is seated and tightened full too. Just noticed the PS symbols on the lower cross screw as well. Neat.

So what? If Sony do not honor the warranty what would you do about it?
You can appeal this situation through the distributor, which needs to comply by the rules of his residence. And if that does not work we have here office which is about customer rights and you can say this distributor does not want to comply with stated law. I was in that situation with sound card back in the 2000s. It worked and I got nearly card 2x the price, which I am still using it today.

Or is it just that hard-core Sony fans are having these issues and saying nothing to protect 'their' brand?
The notion of console shell burning and turning dark is laughable. The console shell doesn't reach 35°C let alone to a temperature that can burn it.
3 people reported this and all three are known hard-core xbox fanboys who unfortunately can not claim xsx superiority anymore due to losing the vs battles so they r trying to create other nonsense fake fuds.

Ugh getting hit with something after I bought destiny. Fan is loud as fuck and stays on after I put it to rest. It’s can be heard when ever a low Sound part hits.

They should start putting those stickers on the packaging so you people will think their warranty is void if they open the box at all. Apparently anything a corporation does these days is regarded as gospel.

I've got a really good sound system, and don't play with headphones ever. It's just not acceptable to me. Plus I use it for media streaming as well. Rather not have one than have to put up with that tbh. 😱

wait, how do you use a mic?... you can not have a sound system and use mic... you need isolation from the surroundings... so annoying to heard the cho of the game when you are playing on headphones...

it is certainly possible that you do not use headphones, but then rather difficult to actions in a team setting...

is this on a ps4, ps4pro or ps5... on a ps4pro remove the console from behind the glass doors of the entertainment center , and drill a hole in the top over the fan...
(the intel fan does not work, just using it as a fan cover, and to prevent things from being placed on top... look closely i also added a screen to prevent dust, OR you could just remove the top of the ps4pro and no need for modification of the console... interesting thing about the cover of the ps4pro it is “just” has a decorative funtction... nothing is really exposed when you take of the top... on the other hand, my ps4pro is a preorder unit, one of the first, so maybe it has a quietr fan in it... never noticed the fan noise...)

btw, download on ipad, i can not get rid of the dual photo thing... for some reason it (neogaf) stacks the same photo...

Coil whine is just sound of electricity... My 3080 whines together with fps and there are no cheap or lose capacitors there. Corsair rm750x is also high quality psu. It's just what it is no matter of they blob the parts really since it vibrates inside of it

Maybe but then how is it most Series X's generally speaking are so much better? (In terms of acoustics before anyone jumps on me lol).

Ever might of been a bit strong but I'd say 95% of my gaming is single player, 3% local coop or no voice coms and only 2% multiplayer with voice chat. With the PS4/Pro I used the supplied headphone.

With the PS5 it's got one built into the controller, its supposed to have noise cancelling technology but never had chance to test it.

I do watch things online via phones with my mate during covid restrictions and very rarely get an echo. Only if any of our phones are too near the TV.

I have a few thousand dollars in my sound system, I don't want to have to stop using it and go to headphones because in quiet scenes I can hear my console running. I stopped playing God of War on my PS4 pro due to how loud it sounded. It was completely distracting and pulled me away from the game.

I don't have a PS5 yet (I am hoping to finish up GoW once I get one though), but I can tell you this, I cannot hear my Xbox Series X at all. So quiet, you do not even know if it is on or not. That is how media based electronic devices should be. Shit, even my audio receiver has a mode on it where it will turn off all extras like the front LED display panel to limit any extra noise added to the audio signal (not an issue for me, but it is for some). Many of us pay good money to enjoy good sound and wearing headphones is not the solution we are looking for.
Well if your audio equipment cost you thousands and you can still hear the PS5 over it. Either you've been completely ripped off for your set up or your specific PS5 is about to blow up.

This attitude is why companies take advantage of customers. Because people like you normalize it. For the money we pay we should not tolerate it. Might as well say it is OK for people to talk in movie theaters.
The money spent on consoles is relative, for some its a luxury item that is hard to come by for others it is a throwaway piece of equipment and essentially cheap plastic that represents imcredible value.

Personally I sit somewhere in between, I know the technology to make such a device silent is v expensive and would be more similar to an iPhone price, industrial design and silicone is not cheap. Therefore this console is relatively silent.

You can't expect it to be utterly quiet. If yiu want that spend more and go for another device. The ps4 was Loud and people put up with it for 7 years. I don't expect much different from the PS5.

Again though how can the Series X be so much quieter (on average) at the same price point and similar spec?

Most of us that own both can attest to the xbox been virtually silent unless there is a disc in or ear is pressed right to the box. Ps Happy Christmas all!

No matter if you’ve payed a million dollars for your sound system you’ll still hear a noisy console in silent scenes. I completely avoid consoles for media usage for this reason, they’re all too noisy, XSX as well.

I just got my second ps5 and it buzzes like the first. I don't think this is a normal noise at all. I'm just at a loss. I'm pretty sure it's coil whine but then again maybe it's a fan noise and I'm mistaken? Oddly, it wasn't doing that during ASTRO but it was instantly doing it during Borderlands 3. It started right at the start menu.

Borderlands, destiny 2, Demon Souls. Any game that makes the GPU in the PS5 work ramps up the power draw and causes the coil whine. Astro does not really tax the system so the whine is minimal. At least in my case the sound is definitely NOT the fan. This might be the downside of the variable clock rate on the SOC. The varying power draw causes varying amounts of whine. I wish Sony had taken the time to properly dampen their power supply.

Ah that really sucks, sorry to hear that. It's really not acceptable.

I was going to say, my PS5 makes a little noise when playing games (zero if I'm playing media), but it's literally the same sound my PC makes when playing GPU-intensive games, which I can easily mute with my headphones. Maybe what some people are experiencing is worse?

Installed COD on my PS5 today and my PS5 started to vibrate. If I touched the console it would stop. Then let go and it’d start up again.

Then I installed Miles Morales and it did the same fucking thing! I’m over the cheapness of this console.
Were you installing off a disc? It was probably just disc vibration which isn't uncommon. After installation the disc is basically just a form of DRM and stop spinning once the license is verified.

Maybe. I can't imagine worse whine than my 3080 and it's not bothering me so I will see once ps5 is here

Someone ignored the spot where I said "the quiet scenes". Also, nice sound system != loud all the time. You can enjoy a good audio system without blasting it all the time.

Be smarter than this.

Have had mine now for a few weeks, and so far no coil whine at all and to be honest, unless i get up and put my ear right next to it, i don't even hear the fan running, and when i do listen up close it's just a light fan sound. And that is after 3 hrs of Demons Souls.

I've platinumed Astro, played a ton of Demons Souls, and now alot of Sackboy also, and i've been blessed i guess by having one of the "silent" ones.

I feel really bad for you guys that are having the bad coil whine. For what it's worth here is my setup for where it is....plenty of space on all sides, vertical, and i use ethernet, not WIFI.

I hope you guys having the issues get it all sorted out. I read how some of you are getting that buzzing noise right out of the box when you first start up your replacements from Sony. That definitely is bad hardware, or faulty QC, or a combination of the two.

The vibrations coming from the disc drive and producing this noise makes it even more obvious to me that the disc drive version was an afterthought.

You can "fix" this, though, by putting a folded sheet of paper between disc drive and faceplate, or anything that tightens this up a bit.

It's definitely the same issue as my first PS5. I can't believe Sony would release something like this. This is bad. I can't believe after the 360 red ring of death issue that another launch could be this faulty. I work in a store and knew just what the return rate was on these but to experience it myself... Yikes. This is going to come back and bite them on the ass, just wait and see.

Well thing is, that coil whine is more like a feature than bug or fault. It has really no effect on how console performs, etc. Issue would be, if the PSU would be somewhat bad and caused issues with the system.

Hey could you look at the bottom where you console was made? My brother also has PS5 Disk version and his was made in Japan and it has basically zero coil whine even with ear next to it. It was the first wave of PS5s...

Question for any electrical engineers out there. Is it possible that the house mains could be causing these coil whine issues?
I used to live in a 100 year old house that had no ground and wired through attic using glass insulators.
My computers video card would sometimes coil whine badly with some PSU and not with others.
Now I live in a brand new house with brand new circuits and PSU that used to cause coil whine now has none.

I did trouble shoot my console in two ports and it still made the same noise. I guess for me if it was the house other machines/consoles would similarly perform noisily.

The point I am trying to make is my near new console is vibrating! Why would this be happening? Is it due to the console stand not being great or is my console faulty? I do have it lying flat as well.

I can't hear this picture of your PS5, either. This picture is amazingly quiet.

One day I decided to dive into my ps4 in an attempt to make it quieter. Console maintenance was way easier than I expected. Try opening it up. It looks way scarier than it actually is.

If you have a PS5 that has coil whine is it louder than the Pro?

I have a Pro which is why I'm asking this question so I can get an idea of how loud it will get.

I couldn't hear any coil whine on my PS4 Pro over the fan noise. I guess Sony solved one problem and introduced another. The fans on PS5 are pretty quiet, not XSX quiet, but quieter than PS4 for sure and I guess that is what really matters.

I wouldn't be able to hear the coil whine with headphones correct?

With my Pro I can sometimes hear the console even with headphones.

And if I do get cool whine does it mean my console will expire soon?

Really tying to see if there's a RROD kind of situation with the PS5. I don't think there is but after reading this thread I'm not so sure.
