Replacement PS5 has coil whine worse than the first

PS5 number 4 (Replacement number 3) it's on its way to me, so maybe tomorrow. My hope of it not having annoying coil whine from playing distance is about 5% 😂
That would be terrible luck and put you at 80% fault which Way over the 10-15% both consoles are at based on the threads here. Good luck but I would give up at that point personally. Or try importing.

Mine is coming back tomorrow as well. I'm hoping the luck for both of us improves.

I doubt that Sony considers it a fault. I acknowledged that my original system 'worked'; it played games. It just emitted an irritating sound. That must be the primary reason so many defend Sony for it.

Dude. I didn’t quote you. What are you talking about? Both of those threads are set up to identify faults and received coil whine votes or crashes. That’s why the number is where it is for each console.

I just think it's unlikely if it's from the day 1 UK allocation.. but we shall see. I dare not hope, last time I thought it was fine until i dared to play a 60fps game that wasnt Demon Souls. We shall see, we've had a few people post videos of their "silent PS5s" which turned out to have coil whine it may just be part of the package.

If anyone has a truly silent one I'd love to see a YouTube video of it playing a 60fps game! 😁 out of the pages and pages of threads I dont think we have had one video of a truly silent PS5, just a few claims. (Note I dont think people are lying just unable to hear it or have ambient room noise cancelling it out).

Did you read what I wrote? I said SONY most likely doesn't consider it a fault not that we don't have threads identifying coil whine as a fault. Geez relax.

Wtf. Sony just keeps sending you replacements over coil whine? Coil whine isn't even a defect.
There is the defense I was talking about.

I hope that you will be able to enjoy your ps5 with no more bad luck issues happening to it. :messenger_heart:
Thanks Fish man. You Sony guys are so loving!

Try playing a game with a constant buzzing noise and see how enjoyable the hobby is 😂🙈

Yeah I get that. Well I dont get how you could receive four systems already that were so loud you were distracted, but that is completely subjective on your part. What I mean is I'm surprised Sony has sent out four replacement systems to you for something that isnt even a defect. I'm surprised Sony would do such a thing.

I have a big heart for my fellow Gaf members, and yep it's what Sony people do.

Probably to avoid it becoming a bigger issue than it already is. If I was stuck with a whining PS5 every game I could play on the Series X I would in peace and quiet, they would lose out a fair bit of money. The customer repair team have all been briefed and shown Coil Whine in person so fingers crossed they believe it to be a rare occurance.

My personal belief is that it is a regional supply issue, just not one region. Hence why some people get lucky straight away and others are having to swap unit after unit.

A serious question here, how far do you sit from your monitor or tv for the sound to be heard, is there no way you could sit it further away to lessen the noise?

I know. I’m plenty relaxed. I didn’t quote you and didn’t bring up Sony. I said to hostile he will be at 80% faults with his new gen consoles. Faults according to the Neogaf threads.

No worries. Seven feet away. My third PS5 was the best yet but in 60fps Spiderman or Valhalla it could be heard anywhere in the room around 14 feet away (during quiet moments, not when orchestra is blasting).

I definitely believe some are more sensitive to it than others. I'd rather my PS4 Pro fan noise any day 😪

I'm in it for the long haul. Imagine me settling for a noisy PS5 for been an early adopter and everyone after me gets a silent one 😱😱.

you sure they don't keep sending you back the same ps5, time after time.

Pushsquare made a poll with over 6000 votes and almost 70% have answered if they had coil whine with "Yes".

2nd poll with 4800 votes, 45% say that they only hear it with sound muted.

Last poll with 4800 votes has 53% saying the hey only hear it while playing games.

6000 votes is a representative sample... but SDF is going to claim that xbots have rigged the poll, so it's all a lie. /shrug

I hope you get lucky with your new replacement Hostile. I personally have accepted coil whine as an integral part of the Playstation experience.

I mean, if this one isn’t to your satisfaction you could return it to wherever you purchased and get your money back and try to source from another retailer. You’re looking at a turnaround time for a replacement anyway. Just press the reset button.

I sat even closer. I completely agree about 60fps titles. Destiny 2 was pretty darn bad. I never had an issue when my PS3 or PS4 Pro ramped up their fans. I guess that coil whine frequency is just grating to the ears.

I was just comparing our experience vs what Sony must be seeing or thinking. Sony seeing it as a problem means they will actually fix it vs swapping it out for a console that has a similar issue.

Sony just has passionate fans who will defend them against anything they see as a threat. MS is a big company and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little fear that if MS gets more successful they will hurt Sony's business. If anything MS should make Sony a better company and push them to produce a better product which is good for all gamers.

But then you read the comments section and most of the people responding say no. you would think that the poll and the comments would follow the same direction, from my quick reading its the opposite.

We’ve got close to 1000 here and both consoles are way above the standard fault rate. It’s and issue I guess. Maybe it’s COVID related or a sourcing issue?

Can you leave a comment if you aren't registered on the site? It might simply come down to laziness. It is super easy to vote but it takes time investment to sign up to write out a comment. If you had to register to vote we might see a closer alignment between votes and comments.

Perhaps one of the best ways would be to check other polls, are those coming in with 6000 registered voters.

Also, i not logged in and i can vote for that poll, i can refresh the page and vote again and again.

but like i said those results seem very very strange compared to the reading of the comments.

If you just read the comments here you'd think it's fairly small issue, the number 1% gets banded about by the true believers alot 😂

Definitely different consoles as different serial numbers. I've already got number 5 guaranteed if 4 fails to deliver. I was so pissed off after getting my first replacement back worse than the first, now I'm just like whatever. I've got use to the fact I probably won't have a satisfactory one for a long time. Haven't games this little in decades, hitting the gym so much I'm getting buff 😂.

Well, i can only go by the comments, most and i mean 90% seem to have none or are very happy with the noise from their consoles, it, perhaps you are just one of the very unlucky ones, maybe your right and they have a batch that they keep sending back and forward, maybe you are Clark Kent's relative and have super hearing.

All i do know is having 4 on the bounce that all have coil whine is either very very unlucky or something else strange is happening there.

I am still waiting to get my console as soon as Amazon refunds their stock, which hopefully happens in the next two weeks or so, i better not get one of yours God dammit.

And if i do, i will throw a BRICK at Darkmage, there is a pun in their somewhere.

How is that defending anything. Coil whine isn't a defect, aren't you surprised that Sony is even honoring these replacements? Let alone FOUR of them? No one is knocking your hypersensitivity to coil whine, settle down champ. Fuck it, if Sony is doing these replacements why not take advantage of it?

I'm just glad I'm not alone, theres a good few of us that hate Coil Whine. Hope your replacement goes well DarkMage619 DarkMage619 . Remember to put it through its paces! I'm more excited for yours than mine because mine is from the same pool as all the other units (theres been no further allocations in the UK yet).
I will download Destiny 2 immediately and run it. I just have to determine which version of Destiny 2 I am downloading because Sony hasn't done a great job with distinguishing software versions you get from the PS Store. PS4 version of Destiny 2 had no coil whine I could hear.

If it wasn't a defect I'm pretty sure Sony wouldn't honor any returns at all especially the number of returns Hostile_18 Hostile_18 has had to make. Hypersensitivity isn't the issue; the way the PS5 PSUs are built is the issue. I could not tell someone else that their issue isn't a problem to them. Just because you might not care doesn't mean it isn't an issue.

It just makes me sad that you'd toss the brick at me when I only returned ONE system. At least the one I returned worked great so you'd love it!

Not only are you hypersensitive to coil whine, you seem to be hypersensitive to my replies. I never once said anyone's issue isn't a problem. I even made a point of saying that it's completely subjective whether or not the whine is enough to be annoying. Depends on the person. Again, all I'm saying is I'm surprised Sony would be going to such great lengths (sending out four replacement consoles) over something that isnt even considered a defect. Coil whine of varying degrees are in every electronic device. But hey, good on Sony for trying to keep customers happy.

Were not talking about putting your ear up to a device here but an audible hum/buzz all the time from feet away. I don't know about else but I'm not willing to add anything like that to my home cinema.

Series X with a similar spec can do it, so can the Playstation. Both were advertised on their quiet cooling solutions. Seems counter productive to have a quieter coming solution only to be replaced with a more annoying noise. I'd class it as a defect.

You’re in for it when your HT evolves and you need to cool it with inaudible fans. Unless you’re planning on a closet install in the future you are gonna have background noise when you start adding components. One way or another. Especially when you stack or use cabinets.

I guess that makes us both pretty hypersensitive since you felt the need to chime in on a issue you don't think is a defect. I don't have any consumer electronic devices that exhibited the level of noise my PS5 made. It's not just Sony that seems to think its a problem because even MS thought coil whine should be addressed. I'm just glad someone cares about us hypersensitive folk.

Until you need more or new tech comes out that proves integral. Everyone has different standards for what they consider HT. Same as the sensitivity to coil whine. Some are good with soundbars or simple HTIB setups and consider it HT, some in between and others actually have full HTs with full racks and closets for their components.

I'm not sure why your going to such lengths to try and dress up what is a console making a horrible buzzing noise while your playing. Frankly its just not acceptable. No other console I've owned does it and I'm not going to put up with it. I'd rather quit gaming if it came to it than listen to that everytime I played.

Your extremely lucky if it doesn't bother you, others aren't that fortunate. It was something completely unpleasant and unexpected coming from a PS4 to a PS4 Pro to this.

I thought we were talking about home theater? And it’s not A console. Youre going on 4. I told you earlier you’re extremely unlucky with your PS5 because you’re at 100% fault rate so far and it’s at 10% in your poll. But the bright side is, You’re also lucky with your x because it has no issues but it’s at 7% fault in the poll on this forum. Cant have everything. But you don’t need to quit gaming, just play all your games on x for now and try another PS5 down the road. It’s starting to get to you, obviously. With all the time you’ve spent trying to get a PS5 that meets your standards you could have completed a game on your x.
As far as “lengths” ? I mean, you’re the one with multiple threads about the same issues.

Well i've played a few hours of Demon's souls and didn't hear anything at all even with the sound off.

This hollyday an old friend of mine came to my house with his 15 years old son. While the two of us casually chat over a drink and play a card game in the living room, the son played Destiny 2 (60fps) beside us for more than 2 hours straight with sound off. No one hear any sound from the PS5 2 meters away. I mean not even a faint buzz, nothing at all. The only sound was the button smashing on the dualsense and some grunt in the hardest times ;)

So i don't know if i'm just the lucky one, but unless i put my ear like 30 cm from the console in total silence (then i do hear a faint noise) it's totally inaudible... In fact, only the white lights of the console tell me it's on.

I just wish you get the same model as mine ^^

That faint buzz you describe is too much for some. So yours isn’t gonna be good enough for everyone. It has to play the most graphics intensive games and never make a noise. So demons souls at 60, MM at 60 and coincidentally, a multiplat is now on the list for good measure. I think it’s AC Valhalla? The multiplat doesn’t make a peep on any other platform or console

I've played Astro, Demon's souls, Yakusa Like a Dragon and Destiny 2 (PS5 version) so far and didn't experience any noise at all.
My gaming PC however did have some coil whine, it's very audible and quite annoying even though i'm used to it.
My fridge buzz loudly every x hours and i can hear it from another room when it happen.
My 2013's PS4 could pass for a hair dryer most of the time
So i can hear all of these fellas but i can't hear my PS5 so far... silent PS5 DO exist, i swear.

See this proves you don't know what your talking about. Valhalla is a GREAT example because you have a choice to play it with a constant buzzing or in total silence depending on your console of choice/how your PS5 is.

Stop been a Sony fanboy. We all love Playstation it's why we are upset but defending them against shitty manufacturing variances is fruitless and stupid. Unless you have experience of playing with loud PS5(s) or have both consoles you really haven't got much ground to be so antagonistic with disappointed users.

Not at all. I’m just happy you bought ac Valhalla for both consoles and tried it on both consoles so everyone didn’t have to. Right? This is what I meant in the post you didn’t quote. You can play your x while you wait. You got lucky. In the x fault thread there’s a number of systems that bricked and have constant crashes. You’re letting this bother you way too much. I saw you even asked for someone to make a video of a quiet console. Maybe none are going to be quiet enough for you man? Maybe you can’t push graphics without a little noise? I don’t know, but I have said more than once I think every PS5 makes noise. I think you just have really bad luck which is why i Made the suggestion I did. It’s one thing for the console to make some noise but it’s a whole other thing to have to send back 3. It’s not up to your standards. That’s cool. You can wait, import and try a new manufacturing standard or return and rebuy elsewhere to try and press the reset on your situation. Because right now you’re doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

No need to swear, ive been playing my ps5 silently since november. Demon's souls, ghost of tsushima, last of us, miles morales, spiderman remastered, sackboy and now yakuza like a dragon. Not one sound yet

Mine was silent playing PS4 games but not on 60fps 3rd party titles. If you can play Destiny 2 PS5 version with no buzzing you have a winner.

Although I sent mine in due to crashes I also had the coil whine...wasn't terrible, but definitely noticable when playing Immortals in performance mode. Btw, they shipped mine today and it's coming tomorrow now. Fingers crossed!

Can't try destiny 2 since I don't have that but then again, with all the games And hours I've put on this I doubt it. The only sound I hear from the console is when it checks for the disk, then it's silent unt I turn the console off
