What keeps the Switch going?

Its no secret the Switch is obsolete nowadays. People here have pointed out many games run at 500p or below, often at 15fps or so,

So why does it keep selling? If people stopped buying Switches, Nintendo would hurry up with their new console. What are people even buying to play on the Switch lol?

Anecdotally, I've seen more Switch / Switch Lite units available in-stores than any other console for the past 14 months..

Oy ye, it's that supreme thirst, baby!

games obviously. otherwise what's the point? it just shows you don't need top specs or graphics. as long as the games are there and they are fun. getting a Switch is a must for me. there are so many good exclusives. i can't really say the same about PS5 or Xbox at the moment so i'm in no rush to get either of those consoles. what's the point in having a 9-12TF console with no games to play?

I dont agree at all. Its the portability of the Switch thats the hook. I mean imagine if the Switch wasnt portable, it was a docked only console, but had the same specs and the same games, do you really think it would of sold as much as it has?, exactly.

But $300 is not exactly a cheap price for a toy?
It’s not just for the kids, parents can use them too, but there is really nothing that can compete with Switch at this point in this area.

Edit: It’s the controllers too. If you’ve ever seen a 4 year old trying to play with their little hands on a beefy Xbox controller then you know Nintendo actually knew their audience when designing the Switch.

maybe not as much cause yeah that's a selling point but it'll still have sold a lot. again, what's the point in having portability if there's no games worth playing?

exactly.

it's crazy how this forum has turned from loving the switch to hating it all because nintendo didn't reveal a Pro model lmfao :messenger_tears_of_joy: and some people have the cheek to call the Switch a toy as if it's just for little kids. the way people act on here maybe the Switch is the perfect console for them to play.

Nintendo should name the Switch pro ‘Switch Adult’ lol

Kids and kid games. This year (and most of last year) was brutal for the switch. I think Nintendo has really struggled since COVID forces remote work.
Do you remember the first year this came out and we got a new Zelda and a new Mario? WTF has happened since then?!

The Switch would have tapered out years ago if the games weren't so incredible. Go back and read GAF's predictions for how well the console would do. If portability was all that was needed for success, then the Vita wouldn't have failed. If a handful of games like Mario Kart was all that was needed, then the Wii U wouldn't have failed. The Switch has one of the best libraries in the history of the medium, so the momentum makes sense.

The Vita failed because a) Sony didn't bother supporting it past the launch window; b) Sony made a ton of early mistakes that were very difficult to fix, particularly at a time when the entire corporation was bleeding money.
The Wii U failed because a) Nintendo was concentrating its funds and dev effort into supporting the 3DS (which had a suboptimal start the previous year); b) they had avoided making HD games for the better part of the generation, meaning they were completely unprepared when the need eventually arose.
Not to mention that the Wii U felt somehow... half baked, like they suddenly found out to their horror that people had abandoned motion controls, causing the Wii to completely wither, and they felt the need to slap something together quickly, in order to keep the lights on at the home console division. It felt simultaneously rushed yet underpowered, but also underutilized (cue the famous 2012 Penny Arcade strip).

At my house:
Minecraft, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu, Zelda BOTW, Tracks, Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Super Mario 3D Allstars.

Fortunately kids rarely have a problem replaying a game they’ve already finished, so I don’t feel like there is a game drought there at all, for them.

The same games that always keep Nintendo console going.

I have no interest in buying a console for a game (or two) I'm going to emulate in a matter of months from release, even if it's a great game like Mario or Zelda.

Anything else is unappealing. Not so for many gamers (and I guess many, many kids).

Maybe. I play the Switch more than I do either my XSX or PS5 and in the five years I've owned it it's never been undocked. It simply has the best games out right now. This year has absolutely rocked as far as Switch games go.

Ehhh this year has been stellar. We got Braverly Default, Mario 3D World, MH Rise which imo is game of year so far, MH Stories 2, Skyward Sword, and Metroid Dread and SMTV is coming soon. It's a better than the PS5 and XSX have given us.

I get that, but don't people notice the poor framerate?
The answer is NO !!!
The market that Nintendo consoles cater to is for a Nintendo fans not PC fans who care about frame rates and stuff like that. I understand that YOU personally care about those things but the general audience don't care about frame rates or resolution. They just care about certain franchises that is well-known and beloved throughout this planet we call Earth those franchises are the Pokemon franchise and the Super Mario franchise plus various other franchises that Nintendo has that is beloved throughout this universe. The only way we can get a hold of these games LEGALLY is through Nintendo that's why the Switch will continuously sell like crazy. I hope this answers your question as well as the question of all the haters of the company called Nintendo. Nintendo is focusing its energy on one console now not like they did last generation where people would flock to the 3DS instead of the Wii U. There's a lot of people that love Nintendo on this planet and since there is only one present current Nintendo console on the market, those people are going to flock to that so it should be a no-brainer to you why the Switch will keep selling.

You are over-thinking it.
There are millions of people out there who buy and play games that do not even understand or care what 500p or 15fps even is.
Outside of online communities when I am talking about gaming it's about what game is good and why, not discussion of framerates.
I think even for myself if a game starts chugging along with low fps I'm not bothered that the game isn't running to perfection I just assume that bit of the game is challenging the hardware and don't really think about it.

I'd say this post and the very premise of your thread is just thinly-veiled console warring.
People keep buying the switch because they want to. They are buying the games they want to play.
Nobody really cares about framerates and resolutions. They just want to know if the game is good to play or not.

Clearly the system has it's positives; it can be played in the car by the kids on long weekend trips and hook up to the big screen for dad to play Zelda. It also has a fair amount of games, some of which sold very well. I can't believe people are legitimately confused by this. That is because they are not confused and just ignorantly projecting their narrow opinions, and possibly inability to afford a lot of electronics, on the general population.

I bought my Switch after resisting for 5 months and playing BoTW on the WiiU. I then played Mario and Xenoblade II and not much else for a while because I had a PC and PS4, but picked it up from time to time. Like all Nintendo systems and Sony systems, there are a few exclusives I play over the life of the system but do most of my gaming on PC. My first born was less than 1 year old when the system launched but now he is 5 and plays it nearly daily and plays it portable. This is great. I get to play the titles I am interested in, and my kid can putz around with games that I know are age appropriate. I can't see how any parent who grew up with Nintendo and still likes to game would not have one of these in their house. The switch collects way less dust than my PS5 and had a better launch window in 2017.

Ah I see, you just pirate stuff then? That will sure show Nintendo.

You are so wrong.

My girl is 9 years old and doesn't like playing Minecraft on the Switch because 'it's choppy'.

You have to remember many kids whose parents bought the Switch for them have no choice but to play on the Switch even if the games play badly. They bought it for them because it's cheap, can double as portable and console, and can play many games, even if some kids would kick and cry for a PS4 or Xbox.

I'd assume it's the same things that made it a hit from the get go. Being both a portable and home console is a useful feature and the library have only gotten better since release with several heavy hitters.

Nintendo also offers a lot of very unique games like Animal Crossing or even new IP:s like Ring Fit, both of which are very different compared to anything else on the market and hugely succesful.

Not to mention all their other IPs like Pokemon, Mario, Zelda etc.

There's a lot to love despite the poor hardware.
