Tin foil hats not included. What if all these negative Sony articles are just to lower expectations for an eventual resurgence story for Sony?

I think a big part of all this is that Sony simply sucks at PR. They don't get engaged enough with the community and say things that are easily taken out of context and used against them. And their messaging is often just wrong. Demon Souls Remake was announced for PS5 and PC and then just PS5. Spider-Man was PS5 exclusive and then it was PS4 as well. These are simple cases where they should have been upfront and/or correct the first time around.

What Sony does do right and continues to do is make great games and that is where the focus should ultimately be. Jim Ryan is never going to be as slick as Phil Spencer. There is just no way. But as long as the games keep coming like they have consistently the last 5 or 6 years, I'm fine with that. And I think most PlayStation fans are as well.

As far as the gaming media, let's be clear. Most of them are just regular folks who threw up a WordPress blog. We are not talking about quality journalists like @Abriael_GN in the vast majority of cases. You have a few well-respected sites and then a shit-ton of wannabes who are playing pretend. They want attention and for many creating spectacle is one way of getting it. It is called "click bait" for a reason. Having said that, Sony needs to not make it easier for these hacks.
This is a far cry from the PS4 days though, no? As silly as my tin foil hat theory is, how is it that Sony just goes through this paradigm shift from replacing a few executives. They have clear evidence of what helped them get out of their PS3 "slump". Part of that was the showmanship. So my question becomes, do they undervalue their PR because of their success, or are they simply incapable of providing good PR now?

Tall poppy syndrome comes to mind whenever I see something popular getting negative press. You'll get more clicks tearing something popular down than you will reporting on the truth. And the truth is Sony cannot manufacture PlayStation 5's fast enough, and no one has ever sold consoles faster. Sony could literally never mention the PlayStation 5 once in the next two years, and they'd continue to sell every one they made. How many times can the press write "Sony has another successful month" before they need to change the script to continue to get clicks on their articles?

No offence but this is laughable. Embarrassing. Comical even. The amount of negative news pieces around Nintendo and particularly Xbox have been astronomical compared to Sony until recently.

There was an article yesterday about Sony not having a single game in the top 30 in Japan and that was the first time that happened since the days of the Famicom. It's newsworthy. People still freaked out because they couldn't stand anything being said about their plastic box. This thread demonstrates the same delusional mentality. Sony fans building them up in their minds to the point where any negativity must actually be positive is some way or clickbait because their almighty Sony can actually do no wrong :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Sony hasn't been the market leader for years. Actually, Switch is on pace to outsell all of their consoles historically, XSX is rebounding with some major moves like the Bethesda purchase and Gamepass. Sony are still doing fantastic, but they've lost tremendous market share since the days when the PS4 dominated the Xbox One and Wii U.

This news probably stings, but this cultism surrounding Sony where you would outright deny reality is exactly the same delusion that is driving the fan fiction narrative in the OP.
yep sony screwed over JP devs and JP devs aren' happy it seems like people flip flop between who cares about japan and why would japan port stuff to the switch and downgrade there games. Its like a oxymoron with some of these responses the gaming online community shills for sony in irl is not like that in the slightest.

The mainstream doesn’t give a fuck about this articles. It’s the fastest selling console ever.

What are they doing wrong again ? If that’s wrong than they don’t want to be right ! lol

I think the change in leadership is pretty massive on the PR side of things. Andrew House led PlayStation to some pretty awesome years with PS4. Jim Ryan was the guy who said things folks remembered for the wrong reasons. Now Jim Ryan seems to be an extremely capable CEO. PS5 is a huge success and it doesn't look to be slowing down. But I think he really needs to had over the PR to someone more capable and can navigate all the social media and YouTube personalities. That is not Jim Ryan's wheelhouse and never will be.

I don't understand the resurgence bit in the title, Sony is doing amazing atm, their consoles are selling out, they have already had some massive blockbusters this year and at launch.

What the heck am i missing here?

They have horizon zero dawn 2 in the works, god of war, some sort of mp last of us 2 factions, a new Grand T, etc etc

so many great games yet still to come but they are somehow the ones who are doing bad in the console narrative.

People need to stop listening to shitty click websites + the rabid fanboy/ care pretenders on this forum, there are a lot of them

Sony is doing absolutely fine, go and play your games and stop worrying about nothing..

There is really nothing extraordinary about it, as it is with every generation of consoles. The better/sucessfull the product, the more glaring its disadvantages become. And people will point out these flaws, make a lot of noise, until shit is old enough to allow nostalgia to kick in, and suddenly everything is great.

Lets be real here....... arrogant, PS3 Sony is back baby!

Luckily they are in a way better position than PS3 launch.
My only complain is the lack of communication. There hasnt been a new game announced since September last year…. Its awful PR.

Yes I want some more niche Japanese like titles, some more studio acquisitions and some more features on the console.

But as a whole, in the last year they year they have released TLOU2, Nioh 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Guilty Gear, Spider-man MM, Free Astrobot, Demon Souls, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank and some more titles. More major exclusives than Nintendo and MS put together.

And theres also God of War Ragnarok, Horizon 2, Gran Turismo 7 and Final Fantasy 16 meant to come out by the end of 2022, not bad games wise at all. I thik they will be fine

Plain and simple, the media needs scandal and so they write out piss poor articles about the doom and gloom of all three companies, and sometimes that includes PC at times. All 4 sides are doing really well in sales and are not in doom and gloom.

This is the wrap-around of Sony's poor as fuck customer communication, and the bad policies/decisions they've taken-up under Jim Ryan.

SlimySnake SlimySnake outlined it in a recent State Of Play reaction thread, where some people couldn't fathom the backlash at all.

Essentially, realistic PS fans (the ones that aren't boot licking corporate appologists with blinders on, screaming about how it's the best selling console or how much money Sony are making and how that means they're doing nothing wrong at all etc.) are getting restless. Every show that goes by with Sony not attending, every rumored event that doesn't end-up happening (I thought we were getting an ''E3 blowout'' tomorrow on Aug 19th, I haven't seen anything announced), every stupid thing Jim Ryan says or PS does, it all feeds an ever-growing resentment.

Meanwhile, wheather MS have the sun coming out of their ass and can do no wrong.... or if it's just a few crumbs thrown out which seem like more because XB fans have been starving since Kinnect 360 era, it looks even more major by comparison when Sony's fucking-up their own messaging. XB fans to can point to XB showing-up at trailer shows, and GamePass, and BC. And buying studios that leads to both the tantalization of 'future games coming', and the... i guess i'll call it reassurance... that their experiences as XB fans are safe-guarded. They haven't got the looming spectre of Tencent, Embracer Game/THQ Nordic, Facebook, Amazon, Apple looking to play in their ball pool, and take half the balls home when they leave and never return them.

The way Sony is going, whenever they decide to do an ''E3 like show'', it had better come out with CastleVania, MGS, Silent Hill/PT Remaster Collections, TLOU2 Factions, Killzone MP, SOCOM 2 Remaster, GTA Trilogy and whatever else is supposedly being worked-on, or else it will end-up feeling like a let-down no matter what. They're breeding toxicity and unhappiness in their own fans, and Jimbo can't see the train coming down the tracks because he's too busy counting money that was earned off the PS4 and PS4 leadership team rather than anything he's done with the PS5 leadership.

Ive contributed to a few doom and gloom comments and thread.

Sony is in a place of dominance so its easy to see them as being too relax or carefree and nickpick at anything they do.

They are not Nintendo that needs to take risk to stand out / be unique.

They are not Microsoft that needs to compete with Amazon, Google or Netflix (rumour has it) and/or need to be on every devices imaginable to be relevant.

Nah, they are just a few clickbaity articles from butthurted fanboys.

Sony is breaking gaming history records generating revenue for a console platform holder, fastest selling console with PS5, biggest amount of games sold for a console with PS4, their exclusives dominated the GOTY awards for the last decade, etc.

They are fine and don't have to worry about anything, they only need to continue the same strategy they have been doing these years and will dominate this generation as they clearly dominated all the previous ones (with the PS3 one as exception).

If you're letting a few negative articles sway your thinking, you gotta live more..

I mean seriously, they're doing super well. They become a target automatically for that alone. Has nothing to do with anything nefarious or conspiratorial.

Standing out and being unique (ie: innnovation) is exactly why the Switch is on pace to blow by the PS4. Nintendo is now selling the most hardware and first party software in the home console and portable market simultaneously, while Sony got beaten right out of the handheld space and surrendered Japan.

Nintendo's approach was clearly superior. Microsoft thinking forward to the future with subscription services and major acquisitions will also pay likely pay dividends in the future. Being stagnant in tech or any other industry is not a great strategy in a world that is constantly evolving.

I was trying to think of a better word when I was writing the title. Then I started doing my post and before I knew it, I posted it without going back and addressing that. Sony is obviously doing great sales wise and I'd argue games-wise as well. The resurgence would be a return to the savvy Sony we knew from last gen before they started showing signs of arrogance.

A big reason why everyone is pro-Xbox today is because the Xbox team is super engaged with the community this generation. All of these media platforms want the clicks and views from an interview with Phil Spencer, Aaron Greenberg or Sarah Bond.

Gaming in general suffers from a lot of industry shilling because all of these media platforms want to continue recieving free stuff like early copies of games.

Nah, it's just the youtubers/bloggers that need to fill in their quotas of content... MS plays well with them, they keep providing content no matter what, Sony on the other doesn't care for the digital media age (not in an effective manner anyway)... so they just talk when they have something to say/introduce, even then they say it once and then they go back to work, for MS it seems that the PR team is running the show.

This is mostly noise and drama for the drama queens.

what the fuck are people talking about re: Sony struggling? They've set new freaking records for selling their PS5, despite a pandemic, despite a global chip shortage... for pete's sake what are you guys on about? So they're not selling games in Japan - they've barely had any new releases recently and, newsflash, PS5s are fucking hard to get in Japan! I know cuz i live here and I've been looking!

Sony's doing fine, i said yesterday that I know someone who works at Sony in Japan and they've already told me that the general feeling around Sony atm is that this is a time of wealth.

I've come to realize in my old age that just about all gaming news is clickbaity and driven by flimsy data or outright uninformed conjecture. Opinion pieces about Sony and the PlayStation brand that are negative are currently driving traffic - so that's what these writers will chase. Maybe next week they'll go back to complaining about Nintendo not releasing a Switch Pro. Who knows.

If we're going to talk about conspiracy theories with some merit how about Shrierier rumor mongering for Bloomberg that the Switch Pro was a thing and getting all the details right other than the fact that it was Pro with upgraded specs setting fans up for disappointment and backlash (when they probably would have been indifferent or mildly pleased otherwise), and then the same source, Bloomberg, telling everyone that the $50 OLED upgrade only cost Nintendo $10, which Nintendo later debunked.

That's some corporate sabotage level shit right there. I wonder who Bloomberg is working for.

While i agree with the arrogant part, they’re nowhere as bad as they once were, in fact they’re making more money than ever despite launching a new system

this is a fantastic chart and should put to rest any talk of Sony making cross gen games due to how much they cost and how they cant afford to leave the PS4 userbase behind.

Or is it something even more hidden behind veil. Could the bashing of Sony and boosting of other platforms be part of the media's plan to usher in an era of Sony's coordinated, intentional, eventual and inevitable redemption.

I think we could all agree Sony's been pretty quiet. They seem to have lost their sense of showmanship. Their games alone do the talking for them, but I feel like this isn't enough. I also think Sony knows it's not enough.

The saying goes "Absence makes the heart fonder". Could Sony be planning a resurgence in the future to overshadow any and all positive press Xbox or the Switch or even PC receives. Is Sony positioning itself to be the hero that's beaten down only to rise up even higher than they were ever previously?
You nail it on the head here. Sony has been too quiet and responsible for all the nonsense thats been circulating on the internet. The latest being the ssd faux outrage while Sony just quietly sits there letting it fester. It's easily the best move they have made this gen and they are getting hammered for it because the marketing and PR guys are MIA.

I have been waiting for their summer show for 3 months now. I was told by gaffers that Sony doesnt attend E3s but does they own conference during E3. They didnt. I was told of rumors of a July conference. Turns out it was a 25th Death Loop state of play. I was told August is when Sony would hold their event because CoD was in development hell and it was all Activision's fault. Well CoD is getting revealed tomorrow and Sony is MIA.

And I cant even be mad at gaffers. They are being lied to by Sony who said that they would have more events and announcements after the July state of play in the next coming weeks. Well, it's been a month and a few weeks, and we got dick.

I hate MS showing in-engine teasers and cg trailers, but my god, I would take it over nothing from Sony. the last time they revealed a new first party exclusive was back in June of last year. It's been 14 months since then. No new games. Well, gow was announced but without any actual footage, screenshot or even a name so not sure that counts. They dont respect their audience. They are either clueless or arrogant and it doesnt really matter because both are just as bad.

The best thing about their quietness is that their fans can get their hopes up week after week, month after month, shooting down people like you and me saying their next big conference is right around the corner. well, we got nothing at e3 and gamescom is next week and sony is nowhere to be found. It's hard being a Sony fan this gen not just because of cross gen bs, delays, lack of new announcements or lack of a holiday lineup, but most importantly because of this almost gaslighting behavior by staying quiet and letting their fans shoot down any criticism of their media strategy or lack thereof.

1) This is my only real complaint right now. They spit everything out last year, but haven't shown anything since....

2) Japan is Nintyland 100% now and Sony appears to not care, which sucks, really, really sucks. I know jrpgs are not "great sellers" but they are portfolio builders and strenghteners for a platform. It's a shame Sony is solely focused on the west and those AAAA sales rn.

3) Yup. The unfortunate part is everything I've been waiting for has been pushed back or doesn't have a release date so far. I mean, COVID has really fucked game dev up hardcore.

4) The residual to this all and why it's highlighted is because XBox has done an amazing job trying to be consumer friendly af since they have had 0, yes, 0 exclusive AAA games launch since SeX & SeS dropped ladt year. Most of their Beth stuff is still a year or 2 away at this point, so they need to ride with BC ans consumerism and it's working..

PS4 still has almost 90 million monthly active users and Switch sold almost 90 million consoles (which doesn't mean all of them are still active every month). To ask them to leave now the PS4 userbase behind would be like to ask Nintendo leave now the Switch userbase. It doesn't make sense, there's dozens of millions people there playing and buying games and DLC.

PS5 userbase is growing at gaming history record levels, but it will need a few years to get a decent useerbase to make profitable to drop there non crossgen big ass AAA games since only a small portion of a console userbase buys each AAA game. Specially on PlayStation, where there is a bigger amount of big selling (combining multiplatform and exclusive) games and there are more games sold for these consoles (over 1600 million games sold for PS4 and counting), these sales are split between more games. So they need a big userbase.

In addition to this, current big AAA games take around 4-5 years (not sure if covid also added almost another one) of development and devs had early PS5 specs in 2018 and more or less final specs and devkits in 2019. This means most big AAA games being released this and next year started their development as PS4 games because didn't had PS5 specs and devkits. So around late 2022/early 2023 we'll start to see the big AAA games that were started to be developed as PS5 games since the start. Until then we'll get refurbished PS4 games, crossgen games or smaller AAA or AA next gen exclusive games.

The pressure is building. They will have to do something. When it happens I predict it will be colossal, the tension is mounting too much for it not to happen this way. To be clear, I'm a gaming fan and I enjoy most of the systems. I have yet to even play a Switch but not because I don't like Ninetendo. I have planned to but I've prioritized upgrading my PC and trying to get my hands on the new consoles. I managed to get a XSX, still waiting on the magical day when I can simply add PS5 to the cart with no stress.

I'm sure Sony's board of directors and all of their investors who expect to earn dividends on their stock holdings who see this chart would completely agree that it's worth cutting off a strong and stable revenue stream so that a handful of entitled PS5 gamers don't have to see some games release with a PS4 version.

There hasnt been a new game announced since September last year…. Its awful PR.

Yes I want some more niche Japanese like titles, some more studio acquisitions and some more features on the console.
Since September they announced many games on the State of Play events, PS Blog and YouTube channel plus other social media channels, all of them with huge audience and user engagement, sometimes even reaching gaming industry records. Even released some of these games.

They also announced 2nd party partnership with 3 studios more from the creators of Destiny/Halo, CoD BO and AC. They also made in this period a couple of studios acquisitions. All these announcements appeared in the gaming media everywhere.

Their console gets sold out in minutes, sold 10M faster than any other console and they are making more money than any console platform holder ever did. Their PR and marketing seems to work perfectly and people is pretty hyped.

Regarding console features, they enabled the SSD bay plus online tournament related features that have been using in places like EVO. They are also working on a next gen PS Now, but I assume they'll support 1440p and VRR next. What features would you include?

The pressure is building. They will have to do something. When it happens I predict it will be colossal, the tension is mounting too much for it not to happen this way. To be clear, I'm a gaming fan and I enjoy most of the systems. I have yet to even play a Switch but not because I don't like Ninetendo. There may be a few upset users on Neogaf, but the pressure doesn't exist.

The opposite: they are making more money than ever, selling more consoles than ever and selling more games than ever.

They are just giving some time devs to make the games specially now with covid delays, and also making time until they wait for chips to be able to increase manufacturing and shipments. They are delivering enough stuff for keep people spending at record levels, but also saving their hype bullets for when needed: once games are ready to show and with enough consoles in the stores.

So you think because they are making more money than ever that they don't feel pressure mounting from competition? Sony has to be future focused and I'm sure they are. Regardless of how they are doing right now, there is always the next flashpoint to prepare for. I don't doubt that they are planning. Everybody's planning though. I still don't think it's smart for them to be so quiet for as long as they have been. I don't seeing Sony just coast. I don't think anybody who enjoys Sony's brand should be satisfied with this.
