Maybe, but what if...
I'm just saying. At some point, they will have to do something. I don't think it'll be a minor thing either. Maybe once COVID dies down. Who knows for sure? I just don't see them taking this type of media coverage lying down forever. Especially if it starts to affect the bottom line. Personally, I think it's a bad strategy to rely on previous good faith stemming from previous success and assume that alone will sustain you without any drawbacks. I dunno, I guess I just hope Sony is still hungry like they were at the end of the PS3 era. That was peak Sony. What we have now is a monolith that largely feels like it can do the minimum and people will not care. That's bad for the consumer. Point-blank period.
They don't care about a few tabloid articles or forum threads spreading fud when their business is breaking historical records.
Looking at the important metrics Sony knows the players are with them and that they are performing better than ever did in several areas (in addition to the ones I mentioned, there are other ones like social media engagement), so I think they won't care if a few aren't happy and are spreading fud or aren't happy. It's impossible to please everybody.
Sony will announce exciting stuff once they consider it's the right time to do it. When they do it, these news get covered everywhere and they achieve stunning numbers on social media and youtube. This will have a big impact, unlike articles moaning about random stuff that almost nobody cares like faceplates.
They registered the PlayStation Experience brand again. So maybe in addition to save hyping stuff for later because they are already selling out all their shipments worldwide in minutes or because games got delayed due to covid, they are also saving stuff for a big event in December, who knows.
And looking at sales, revenue or social media performance, their PR and marketing is super effective and customers love their stuff, or at least spend a ton of money on it/buy it a lot.
Regarding their amount of output and relying in the past, if we look at the exclusives they released since a year ago and the ones they will release in a year from now, they have a ton of quality content, more than Nintendo and MS combined. TLO2, GoT, Morales, Astro, Sackboy, Demon's Souls, Returnal, Ratchet, Guilty Gear Strive, FFVIIR Intergrade, GoTDC, Death Stranding DC, Deathloop, Kena, Horizon 2, Stray, Ghostwire Tokyo, GoWR, GT7, Forspoken, who knows if FFXVI and many others I forget now like cool small indies. Plus they also made other announcements like acquisitions of EVO, Housemarque and Nixxes or that they partnered for future 2nd party games with the creators of Destiny, CoD BO or AC and other top AAA IPs.
A lot of great stuff specially considering it's an intergenerational period and also in the middle of a fucking global pandemic that is killing millions of people around the world. They could do it better? Always. Some people complain for no reason and will continue complaining independently of whatever they do? Too.
Example: today they release GoT DC and it has a Metacritic of 88, which is 5 points more than GoT. But some people is talking about a helicopter VR game they canned a year and a half ago.
