Digital Foundry impressions on Forza Horizon 5

Can we please get an OT for this fucking game?

We have Far Cry 6 out for some time now and...ok nevermind that game lol but still can we get an OT on this please?

I've been working on this games OT here and there since July but I apparently didn't claim it properly so I'll get that sorted so I'm not stepping on any toes. I was planning on posting it on the 2nd, a couple days before the game launches for deluxe edition purchasers and a week before the full launch.

It deffinetly looks good and looks like next-gen, no questioning that at all. My point simply being that there have been other titles before FH5 that did this, therefore saying first true next-gen seems a bit far reaching for me.
For sure. DeS, Ratchet, Flight Sim, Forza Horizon 5 and what we’ve seen of Horizon Forbidden West - best looking console games I’ve ever seen.

And that’s a November 2020 number, before the Steam version and at a time with approximately 4-5M fewer GP subs. The franchise is huge today.
The more people play a game of this quality the better, just shows having a game on Pc and console does massivly help sales and gamepass numbers

What sucks is that if you want to experience the way this game looks in the trailers, you have to play at 30 fps. If you want the game to feel responsive and smooth you have to settle for a much scaled back presentation at native 4k.

It's assanine for them to not offer a 3rd option which retains the amazing looking settings at a lowered res, like 1440p. I don't get what is wrong with developers these days. It seems like there always is some kind of drawback on console, even ps5/x, due to developers not offering enough options. Insomniac shows how it should be done.

Ps- just learned that the new Guardians game only offers 4k/30 or 1080p/60 on next gen consoles. That's the kind of crap I'm talking about.

Customising your gameplay experience was never a USP of the consoles. It's only with this gen that companies are experimenting with different modes. I'm not sure a typical console player would want too many options. That's where PC gaming comes in.

Yep. Should easily be at >30m now. Absolutely massive, almost Mario Kart tier.
Mario Kart is on a different tier. MK8 series sold around 46 million units to date and most of those copies were sold at the full price point.
Forza numbers are player counts which from new copies, used copies, game sharing, new profile, and gamepass while MK8 numbers are only from new copies sold.

Still makes me laugh how a brand new studio (I know it was formed of vets from other racing studios) randomly appeared on scene and have now delivered five out of five amazing racing games without compromise. What a talented bunch of people.

I agree that possibly the most balanced option would be to apply DRS and the highest level of detail ... But I think they know that also in PG and there must be an important reason why it is not available.
My bet is that they have not yet managed to implement dynamic resolution (DRS) in the graphics engine that works correctly and they have continued to bet on the dynamic change of graphic details to maintain the framerate that they implemented from FM7 and FH3 and which is an option in the PC versions. .

The fact is that they recently announced that DRS was going to be a novelty in Forzatech and it is strange that it is not being seen in FH5.
Hopefully after the launch they can offer it.

Surely a lot has to do with the fact that the Studio was born and formed with a good part of the people who made up Bizzare Creations (Project Gothan series), people from Codemasters and even Evolution ..... and, of course, an excellent direction in each project.

Best of all, this is the first FH of this New Gen and it looks exceptional. But if we look at the previous one, the jump will come in the next FH6 although my illusion would be to see them announcing the return of the ProjectGothan series.

Not that big of a difference at all..even from the outside looking in at still screen comparisons.
In action, you simply don't notice less bushes, cacti etc.
The poly count, resolution, textures and lighting model are still the same..the map/biomes aren't any smaller..not a big deal at all. Playground did an amazing job with performance mode.

Can't we all just get along and shift the focus to the real enemy, Forza horizon 5 as an arcade style racer with excellent visuals versus the rough and rugged my friend Peppa pig multiplatform extravaganza.

Now I may be a son of a bitch, but this is the true battle.

those engine sounds seems like will be better at least some of them ... thats very cool specially from cockpit view seems like its proper sound growling and all
if only they could put there option for more realistic handling , not as default just option

So this is how people are having “fun”?
Oh yes! Perfect balance of arcade racing and simulation, like Project Gotham Racing or Driveclub but as these videos show you can go off the road and just fool around in the wilderness, doesn’t matter if you have a Hummer or Lambo, there are no restrictions, just go crazy, blasting through a jungle in 200kmph with bushes and crap flying everywhere will be perfctly normal in this game 😁👌

I said that in the first page, first (maybe second) example of proper next gen graphic jump. You can clearly see this was not possible on previous gen,but I want to see previous gen first even at 30fps to confirm this statement, but really this game has got the potential to look truly photorealistic especially on PC,with some reshade adjustment
Be ready than for next week, i will post some of that car porn in here and in the pc photo thread :messenger_winking:.

correct, without VRR, the framerate needs to evenly be a multiple of the refresh rate of the TV/display. Aka 30, 40, 60, 120 fps work on 120hz displays. Whereas 40 on a 60 would not and 50 on 120 would not.

this is only if you assume perfectly matched frames with no tearing and/or drops. it's completely viable to run 120 fps on a 50hz display, but it might not look as good as on a 60 because the frames won't evenly match the refresh rate.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know how this game works if you buy the physical copy? The game is 104GB, and as far as I am aware games don't ship on discs that big. Is it going to be shipping with missing content and the only way to get that extra content is to update the game when you install it?

It will likely only have the Xbox One S version on disc. You'll have to download a significant chunk regardless if you're playing on Xbox One X or Series X, probably. Hell, no matter the platform you'll need to download a lot.

Yeah I figured as much, just thought it was interesting noone had brought it up to whinge about yet as it basically mean's its an "online only" game. I've already got it preloaded so I don't care, was just curious.

Absolutely, that’s the showcase events, the ”main quests” if you will, they’re awesome and absolutely nuts! 😁

Unfortunately there aren’t that many. In the ”side quests” you’re driving more normally but it’s still arcade racing and the focus is still on fun rather than realism in a perfect balance. If you haven’t played a Horizon game yet, time to jump in now! 👍

Fuck me. that looks better than the horizon and rdr2 jungles. Holy shit.

Oh and great looking reflections too. just goes to show that you dont need RT reflections in every game. Maaybe in track racers like GT and Forza Motorsport, but even then Id rather have the budget go into better level of detail. i am so fucking hyped to play this game now.

People saying it doesn't look miles better than fh4 needs to get their eyes checked , the environment density alone is a generational leap
Fh4 on Xbox one x in 30 fps mode and see this on series x in 30 you will be mindblown how better this looks l.

I'm sure if this game took place in Egypt there would be a race that ran along Da Nile.

1 & 3 are amazing. 2 & 4 are merely good. Your greater point still stands. I miss Bizarre though. PGR2 and Blur are two of my favorite racing games ever.

Sosokrates

Report me if I continue to console war
No idea why things are so hostile in here. The concept of next Gen graphics is so alien this Gen because of this bizarre fascination with cross gen games, native 4K resolutions and in demon souls case 60 FPS. Yes ratchet and ds look great but they have wasted half of the gpu power on hitting native 4K at 30 FPS. Next Gen games will target 1440p 30 FPS like the ue5 demo.

As good as forza looks, I can promise everyone their next game will look way better. Especially if they leave this nonsense native 4k resolution behind.

Forza’s biggest upgrade are its environments. The detail is simply unlike anything that’s come before it. We can compare it to gt7 which is closed circuit and is still being beaten by an open world game. The difference in environmental detail is simply generational.

However, the lighting still looks off to me. It doesn’t look Photorealistic like flight simulator which should be very doable for racing games this Gen. other more traditional games like fable and hell blade 2, maybe at 1440p 30 FPS but racing games will always target 1440p 60 FPS limiting their graphics budget.

And lastly, next Gen means cpu can finally allow them to do things they couldn’t do before. Destruction, detailed weather systems, other simulations, far higher number of cars. We are simply not getting those upgrades with 5 because it’s still a cross gen title.

I suspect next year with forza being next Gen only and gt7 being cross gen is going to be a real bloodbath. Especially if they can get the lightning right, use Horizon quality trackside detail and add destruction that has been missing from these so called sims for so long.

As it stands, forza horizon is a great cross gen effort just like horizon forbidden West but both games will show their age as soon as next Gen games like avatar, forza Motorsport 8 and other ue5 games roll around.

It wont be much of a blood bath between GT7 and Forza Motorsport, afterall GT7 is crossgen and you said in your last paragraph that cross gen games will show there age compared to current gen games.

60fps is the fluidity you expect from a game.
You see, standard movie framerate is low with blur, the smooth movement from high fps games looks very different, so performance mode is what you expect from a game these days, but quality mode with 30fps... because they "fixed" the blur from previous games it not looks incredible smooth despite the low framerate, it has that feel of a movie. With the higher resolution and extra details of that mode it's an experience worth playing, many gamers may prefer to play at quality mode for how good it looks and feels (there's low input lag). This may be reinforced byt the mandatory restart to change modes. Because you can't see the change is framerate immediately like in other games the change don't feel jarring.

I know for lot of people now 60fps is standard but for me personally, I am not a competitive player and 30fps is ok for me. Though I have to admit 60fps gives you advantage.
