Xbox - Series S or X?

Still seem weird that it's not outright better than one x. Lower resolution just seem weird. Also, as someone who loves playing bc, it's really heartbreaking that it doesn't support enhanced bc games. I mean what the hell, how can it be next gen without doing what previous gen could.
Last I checked, the Xbox One X couldn't run UE5. Seems like a HUGE advantage for the Series S going forward.

EDIT- I own both of them at the moment.

If money is no object, might as well have an X.
That said I have both, and the S still constantly surprises me at how well it does for a relatively small and inexpensive box.
99.9% of those who slam the S have never owned one and quite simply don't understand the hardware.

Some backwards compatible Xbox and 360 games work only from the disc so you wouldn't be able to play them on Series S.

X.

Or used S as they are quite cheap because they arent popular*, I have seen them going for about 200€ and few times under it.

X = disc drive = it is backwards compatible, unlike S. (I dont count digital titles as real compatibility)
X = bigger SSD, even this 1tb disc fills up really fast, like install flight simulator + forza5 + halo = around 250gb gone
X = more performance now and in the future, S is just too weak to not to be a compromise

XXX.

S is smaller and cheaper, but saving so little isnt worth it, unless you are on really low budget, and then getting new console should not be your thing then anyway.

If you are planning to get game pass, then S with tiny SSD will became annoying really soon, as it limits the ability to test random games, unless you delete games all the time. On X it is already annoing as the disc feels small. and buyinh extra storage for S makes it more expensive than getting X.

Game pass with gold -> 1€$ -> game pass ultimate conversion deal is really good

Game pass with 15-16€ / month normal price is just a "rip off", unless you game only on xbox + game hours/day, it is not worth it.

with normal price it is about 192€/year, or 576 € for 3 years.

With that money you can get 3-4 launch games/year, or 5-20 games/year when buying from sales and used games. Or if you buy disc games, complete them in some weeks, you can then sell them for 10-30€ loss and play even more launch games/year, with console that uses discs.

Because time is limited, it is not worth it unless you really play like 10-50h/week + play more than 5-10 games/year.

And I am not counting situations, where you have to buy games that are not coming in game pass, or have already left it, it also adds up.

But with 1€ conversion deal it is damn good deal.

Normal price is basically like having netflix+hbo+disney+ on the same time == there is no way one person have enough time to really use them all, unless only thing they do is to watch tv.

As in if you own ps5/pc/switch and then get xbox = now you have to divide your gaming time even more, so game pass will lose some of it's glory vs. if you only own xbox.

But in the end series x is nice system and with cheap game pass it is really good deal to own and I highly recomend it. Just save a bit more and get series x, it is much more future proof than S, which is also great machine for some situations, but probably not to yours.

* yes yes they are sold out and cost your first born and sould at US, but on many countries they have been available since the launch quite easily. Even series X have been on stores for weeks, or maybe a month before it sold out again here.

What is that, like 8 games? You can't count the halo games, since the master chief collection makes more sense anyhow.

I don't agree with many people who are slating the series S here. It's a great console.... I use it as my upstairs console and I never think "ughh I hate these graphics" I just carry on playing the game I was playing on my series X

But if you can afford the X it's obviously the better choice. It outputs at 4k and has better storage.

You can't buy an X so that should make the choice easy for you.

Really though, if you want one right now, buy an S and sell it on later when the X becomes available, or keep it if you're satisfied with it. If you're not in a hurry, wait for X availability, especially if you have a large TV and you sit fairly close.

Then buy 1 to 3 years of Xbox Live Gold and after that a month of Game Pass Ultimate, and your whole Live duration will be upgraded to Game Pass instead.

Game in the UK are doing a deal where you trade in an old last gen console eg ps4 switch lite etc and pay max £99.99 for a brand new series s. I may do this with my lite and have an S in the office. Got PS5 in there and Series X down stairs.

If you've got the money then Series X, the only advantage Series S has its that it's smaller and draws less power, in every other way it's inferior.
Inferior is objective when speaking about power but, not so much in other ways. The S is a very impressive machine. People keep sleeping on this little beast. I'm telling you from experience; don't!

Well, just my two cents, but between XSX and XSX, I would choose XSX. This is my answer.

Other than size, power draw and, of course, price, how is it superior to XSX?
It could be in some ways, if you throw it out the window, it would land more far away.
I have a XSX, and I would never consider anything less powerful. For me is only power/res/details/fps, they are above everything else.

I’ve had a series S for a few months and very recently bought a Series X, so I can give you a comparison of the two.

The Series S is a great little machine, especially for the price. It’ll get you most of the way towards the fidelity of the full fat experience, but the small hard drive definitely hurts it.

The Series X by comparison is a good deal more impressive, if not a huge leap. Graphics are definitely sharper and more detailed, and frame rates are generally higher, I could immediately appreciate the difference even on my lowly 1080p, 32” set. The bigger hard drive is fantastic too.

TL : DR - honestly, the S will give you 90% of the experience for almost half the cost (and a more energy efficient machine into the bargain). But if you want the best experience and a bigger hard drive, the X is worth the extra cost for me.

(I’m trading in my S towards a PS5.)

NO PAIN TRANCE CONTINUE
Due to financial reasons (also want a PS5) i bought a S.

Just wanted a upgrade from my OG Xbone with coilwhine and all I cared about playing was my (retro) library (with better performance sometimes) Halo Infinite/MCC and was curious about MSFS.

Been playing Elden Ring mostly

This console is dead silent and quick resume is chef's kiss.

I fucking adore this console

Yeah this is a good summary. The S delivers nearly the same experience as the X; it has the same speed, quick resume, UI etc. But the X does it at higher resolution, and often higher framerates. And it has a drive. The X does everything better, but its gonna cost you more and its harder to get right now.

Ofcourse, even at 1080p the X would be better because of:

-Supersampling from 4k source
-better support for legacy games ie. the One X profile.
-more space, though I would likely want to upgrade X as well. I did throw 1tb NVME in my PS5 earlier this year.

I am looking out for an X, since I bought the S in 2020 to see if GPU is to my liking. My plan is to get the X once its easy to pick up for RRP. I might keep the S though, I really like it.

Def the series x if you can get it and afford it. Im a graphics whore but the series s has found its niche for me. It has become my travel console when i go away for extended periods of time.

People forget how massive of an upgrade the S is over that OG Xbone, great pickup

I’d love to have an S, and almost bought one, but the downsides are too much for me to bear. No One X enhancements, considerably lower res & framerates unless games get tailor made enhancements. Also incredibly low storage and the price of the expansion SSDs are absurd.

If they do a mid-gen refresh that matches what the Series X currently offers power wise and more storage then it’s a no brainer.

I agree. Only problem I had with my S was the storage size. Sucks that expansion costs so much. If not for that, I would probably still have the S.

Series S* should have never existed!

Plenty of people are enjoying their Series S. Why would you want to take it away?

People can take an objective look at the specs and realize that it is underpowered. It does have it's place as a kiddie bedroom console on a cheap TV. I wont lie, I do like the appearance of it.

X. Beyond not having the money for the X there's never any reason to even consider the S in passing.

The Series S is so tiny. If you are worried about space in your home or if you like traveling with your console you can easily stick that in your backpack or carryon luggage when you board an airplane.

I guess form factor won't really matter when Xbox series X has a midgen smaller more compact version. But for now Series S has the best form factor.
