OFFICIAL: Starfield and Redfall delayed to 2023

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I work for a software company and our teams hit all of our feature deadlines and deliveries even after transitioning to remote and hybrid work environments.

Good for your company, I suppose. But almost every big gaming project has been suffering some kind of delay, even games like FF16 that don't even have a release window, their developers have said they've had to push their milestones 6 months cause of these issues.

It really is not that difficult to see how Covid has affected tthe video game industry and the development of these games. We've had delay after delay for the past few years now to the point where its pretty much expected with each new videogame announcement.
Whatever your company does, I'm sure its not the same as developing AAA titles.

Quality wise they've been hit or miss, like fallout 76 or even fallout 4 that was a bugfest around launch...I don't care how much a game sells as long as it is good (of course said game selling well can garantee a sequel)
BGS didn't make Fallout 76, and, as I said, Fallout 4 wasn't to my tastes, but it reviewed and sold very well. I'm not sure what we're discussing?

Isn't it a problem if too many gamers think like the bolded? Isn't the whole point of their business model is for people to be signed up for years at a time to help financially support the games being made going forward?

Well to be honest I don't give a shit about their "business model", I just do what's right for me. I treat EA Play, and Ubi+ in the same way. If there's something I want to play/try I'll sub, if not I'm out. I have too many other games (and a sizable backlog) to be playing to give money away on subscriptions I'm not using.

Ok that great but it affected everyone differently and it affected the games development greatly thus that why you see so many game delays
I never said it didn't, I never even brought covid up before you quoted me. I never disputed the effect it has had.

Okay. I never disputed the effect it has had. You are correct that I no longer work in video games, but our work is exceptionally large and complex, we just have a lot less creative types in our process.

Is it possible you all brought thoughts from elsewhere in the thread to my reply? I was just pushing back on the broad assumption that major projects HAVE to go off rails because of the global challenges.

And you're right. Covid had zero impact on our department when transitioning to working from home and now we've smoothly transitioned to a hybrid system where its a few days in the office and a few days working from home. Was just stating that it looks like the opposite for video game development.
It could also be that some companies have better prepared for the dramatic shift in working environment prior to the lockdown.

checking in code and hooking up to AWS or some shit is drastically different than developing a game.

My name is in the credits for about a dozen titles and would have been in 4 more if they weren't cancelled mid production. My code is in the artic code vault.

You are absolutely correct that they are different, and the creative element is probably a million times more difficult, but the tools are out there.

I doubt Stalker 2 releases this year.

Everyone keeps saying Xbox now has no games coming this year…. Well we will find out next month at the showcase.

I'm trying to stay positive. The Starfield news really deflated thing. Microsoft/Sony aren't like Nintendo. They don't hide games until they are ready to release.

Read your own link again. The studio who made Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4 didn’t make Fallout 76.
There might be some confusion there we are indeed talking about bethesda game studio right? And who is credited as the devs for Fallout 76?

WOW
What a surprise! Nah, I said in multiple threads Starfield won't release this year.
What's the bet if it releases in 2023 it'll be in a similar state to Cyberpunk?

For some reason, I am not surprised. I’m expecting even more delays from here on out. This probably doesn’t really matter because the consoles will sell out even with no new games in 2022.

We have two options:

1-Delay and have a great game :lollipop_winking:
2-Not delay and have another Cyberpunk :lollipop_fearful:

Bethesda made the right decision!
You forgot,

3-Cyberpunk was delayed and still released Cyberpunk.

I’m confident that shit won’t happen here though. But it will have their signature bugs and possibly jank.

All these AAA developers (apart from Sony/Nintendo/Rockstar) seem to have this tendency to make worse and worse games. If a game isn't buggy, they at minimum aren't as well made or in depth as a previous iteration by the development team. Just look at Fallout 3 > 4 > 76 as an example.
I wouldn't doubt Starfield being in a Cyberpunk like state.

So how long of a delay are we realistically expecting ?

For Starfield Grubb speculates a Feb release, which really won't be that bad, Nov to Feb is not that long.

But that leaves Redfall, is that straight up getting delayed from Summer 2022 to Summer 2023 ? Or will that come out first THEN starfield.

Either way, H1 seems like they'll be putting out a few Bethesda games, unless something gets delayed again.

Starfield, Redfall, Ghostwire Game Pass, possibly more.

Yeah, I don't think there is a chance in hell we'll see S.T.A.L.K.E.R. this year. It was already delayed until the end of the year and that was before Russia invaded their country. It's a shame because that is another game I was really looking forward to but considering everything those devs are going through on top of covid I think we will be lucky if we ever get this game.

Can someone explain why the fuck they announced a release date a year ahead of time? What a fucking stupid move because now you look even worse. Like remember when square had an entire press conference to announce the ffxv release date…THEN FUCKING DELAYED IT!? This is that level of embarassing, this looks bad for xbox because now they have NOTHING except for forza motorsport, this looks bad for bethesda because their last game came out six years ago. This would be fine if they never announced that date, it would still suck a little but because they had so much bravado to announce a hard release date it stings even more. I hope they learned a hard fucking lesson, ESPECIALLY after halo infinites year long delay. I dont want to hear fucking lies and dates from microsoft anymore until its like 2 months out and they KNOW FOR A FACT that they can hit the date. Sick of all of these fucking publishers lying about release dates. Fuck em.

…im really fucking pissed off about this, but at least i got that rant out of my system

MS doesn't lie about their hardware, considering they made xbox one s and Xbox one X.

They also have windows, which has data on most GPU.

So their hardware department is solid. Aside of hiccups failure like the xbox vcr and x360 ROD.
Yep, just their release dates

we don't even know if there's forza motorsport this year..

Actually, shows how little you know. I was going to go back to Skyrim (already started it last year) and then after that I was going to play Fallout 4. Without this delay I would have went to replay and complete those games much sooner. Now the delay buys me more time to add another game or two to my list of things to play. One of the few big game releases I had never played till now was Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. I have still yet to touch my copy of Elden Ring, so I have more time for that also.

Also, never touched Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Another game to get to.

What about for the people who already played those games and were depending on Starfield to drop this November? They're now short a game, that seemed like a lock.

Where the fuck to begin????????????????

1. Redfall delay. I have said numerous times that I was always expecting Redfall to be delayed to 2023. February/March was my prediction. Give them an extra six months and stay away from the packed Fall/Holiday season. So no surprise here whatsoever. At least, not for me. When it releases in 2023 I guess is an entirely different conversation. Hoping that there's NO release date for Redfall's gameplay trailer at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase because well, if the following game can have a release date 18 months and get delayed, then what's the point in announcing a release date now??? I say show gameplay in June, hope it's a good showing and then wait until The Game Awards to announce a release date if it's before June 2023. If it's after June 2023, just wait until next June's showcase.

2. Starfield delay. If there was one single game in 2022 that I didn't believe would get delayed to 2023, it was this game. When you give an actual release date 18 months prior, in my mind, it's like, okay, they're extremely confident, you know like 100% fucking confident in hitting that date. Otherwise, why give a release date? Makes no sense to me. If you're not 100% certain no matter what, don't give a release date. As for the game itself, im not a Bethesda Game Studios fan. I am a fan of Arkane, Machine Games and Tango Gameworks though. Excluding a few hours of Fallout 4 years ago, I have never played a single BGS game. This was going to be the first BGS game that I was going to play and give a legitimate chance to. Obviously, this game must have some serious issues and people thought it was releasing in Fall 2021. Hahaha. Hoping the gameplay trailer in June at least looks good and the foundation is there. If it shows like Halo Infinite in July 2020, they should pull it from the showcase in my opinion. I'm going on record right now and saying that Starfield will release in November 2023. I believe that it will get a full one year delay just like Halo Infinite.

3. Bad PR. After this past weekend's outage and DRM nightmare, delaying not just Redfall since I don't believe that would have mattered much in the grand scheme of things but also Starfield is just piling on after last weekend. Microsoft should have waited until after the showcase to delay Starfield. Redfall they could have put a new release date on it in June when they show gameplay and post-show, be like, yeah, they needed another six months or whatever. But for Starfield, I would have waited until July to delay it. Let Xbox fans have a great showcase, stay hyped and excited and then delay the game because if you're excited after the showcase for whatever reasons, at least it wouldn't be as bad in my opinion because there would be so much to look forward to in the future.

4. Empty and dead 2022. This is pathetic. All these fucking studios (excluding ABK since they don't own them yet) and they can't even release any games. This reminds me of the Xbox Series launch where all they had was Gears Tactics and that's it. This year, Xbox fans will get a Deathloop port. Yay!!! (sarcasm). I know people expect Forza Motorsport and I will be honest, I would not be shocked or surprised if it gets delayed to 2023. UGH. This year is definitely giving 2017 Xbox One a run for it's money. lol

5. Mismanagement and leadership issues. Seriously, how many fucking times does someone have to see negative after negative before realizing, holy shit, there may be some serious fucking management issues? And the more studios they add, the harder it's going to be to manage them all. It's like they bit off more than they can chew. I also don't understand how there could be miscommunication issues which is definitely apparent here because how do they start marketing Starfield knowing that it's probably getting delayed? In all honesty, they don't seem to have a clue as what they should be doing. I understand being hands-off in the creative process after green-lighting a game but they should be hands-on and require updates at least every three months. Like, hey, what's your progress? How's the game coming along? Do you need anything? More money, more personnel, more resources? I like David Jaffe and while I don't always agree with him, he's 100% right in this regard because as of now, it looks like fucking amateur hour at Microsoft in regards to Xbox.

6. Phil Spencer. I like Phil but he's too relaxed and laid back. He needs to be more strict. Granted, he's probably a generation away from retirement and has setup a great foundation to build on but at this point, there needs to be some results and games getting released. And I don't care what 2021 was. That means nothing to me now. Spencer and company need to get their shit in order, period because if not, all this investment, acquiring studios and publisher will be for nothing.

7. Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase. While majority will probably disagree with me but as an Xbox fan, I DON'T want to see any new game reveals from their first party studios at all. Show me fucking gameplay for the games that have been announced the last two fucking years. Don't show me a fucking CGI trailer for a game that's 3 years from showing gameplay and another two years before it actually if we're lucky. No, just fucking no. Hold back showing new games until they're literally within 18 months from release. I don't need to know games are coming out in 5 years. I want to know what's coming out sooner rather than later.

8. 2023 and beyond. This is perhaps the only upside and positive. If in 2023, Microsoft actually releases 4+ exclusives and all of them are great, then awesome, the future goes back to being bright instead of dark like it is right now but at the same time, they all really need to get their shit together because having nothing at launch outside of Gears Tactics, nothing in the first half of 2021 and thus far, nothing in 2022 is simply unacceptable.

That's enough of my fucking rant. Worse part is that im not even really pissed off, more so, im so damn disappointed and letdown because it's like, every time, you want believe that Microsoft has finally righted the ship, nope, here's another fuck up that makes you think, how do they not have their shit in order? I can fully understand a few studios having issues (like 343 as an example) but JFC, it's like they all have fucking problems and issues. I just don't get it. I really don't.

UGH. What a shitty day for gaming. At least for me. Oh well.

EDIT - I knew I forgot to say something. With no potential exclusives this Fall outside of probably the Deathloop port, Microsoft needs to go after Gotham knights and Avatar to be in Game Pass day fucking one because other than getting major top tier AAA titles into the service at release, I don't see how anything else can even come close to making up for delaying Starfield and to a lesser extent, Redfall. UGH.

Great and honest post man, respect the effort. I agree on Starfield slipping into H2 2023 as well, especially if Avowed and Hellblade II aren't ready by that point.

Also, I can't help but see so many parallels now between MS with Xbox series (in terms of mismanagement, slipping release dates, development issues etc.) and Sega during the Saturn era in NA & Europe regions, but that's just from quickly looking at things. Not gonna get deep into that here (and this is as someone who has come to love the Saturn's library after the fact).

Some people have the tendency to believe that every move Sony makes is reactionary and that if MS doesn't pressure them they will become arrogant ....Totally forgetting that during ps4/xb1 era they had almost no competition and released banger after banger.

Well once Bloodborne dropped it was hit after hit; before that it was kind of scattershot tbh and XBO arguably had better exclusives from the 2013-pre Bloodborne period (outside of some solid PS4 exclusives like Infamous Second Son, Resogun etc.).

Kind of shows how quickly XBO's momentum petered out in 8th gen.

Keep in mind Grubb nor the other "insiders" came out ahead of these delays or speculated ANYTHING regarding them until after the fact, so I wouldn't take any word from any of them as being worth listening to more than any average poster on the forum.

Starfield is probably closer to late Spring 2023 at earliest; if Avowed and Hellblade II aren't ready for 2023 though, then Starfield's going to be Fall 2023. RedFall probably has a better chance coming out sooner than Starfield; it's less ambitious and is a live-service GaaS so even if it launches kind of weak they can promise to improve it with content updates. So that's the one that'll probably hit closer to Q1 2023, Q2 at latest.
