I don't get the reason why Bungie left Microsoft.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
I mean, I get it, Microsoft wanted to continue Bungie to make Halo and Bungie wanted to pursuit new projects, which was destiny.

However, Halo and Destiny feels so similar, that you could potentially say its a mmo lite version of Halo.

They play exactly the same, the same kinda gravity, even the art style are similar in so many ways.

It seems like they wanted to make Halo a mmo lite version, where Microsoft might have declined and wanted to continue doing Halo.

It's just, I don't get why you leave a company, that only wants to make you this type of game, to become independent and continue to make the same type of game, just in a mmo lite scale, and continue making that franchise.

It's basically the same minus the mmo aspect. It has to be something else.

People don’t understand that “old” Microsoft was brutal, so many of the upper management were actively stabbing as many people in the back as possible just to ascend the corporate ladder.

There were reports that despite having one of the best selling series of all time Microsoft would randomly restrict Bungie. They would want to throw a fan event and Microsoft would just kill it outright and say it was too expensive and a bunch of other petty shit.

I mean, I get it.

Seems like you solved that one yourself pretty quickly.

Bungie created a mega-successful IP with Halo and believed they could do it again with another new IP (Destiny), but Microsoft wasn't willing to take that chance and would have preferred that they continue expanding the Halo universe with new games. That's the only reason for the separation. Bungie doesn't really want to be mandated by any one publisher, they just want the $$$ that a big publisher can provide to enable them to create their games. It's the reason neither Activision nor Sony have been able to outright purchase the IP for Destiny or any future titles they have planned like Microsoft did with Halo.

The heart wants what the heart wants. It wouldn’t have mattered if their next game was called Balo - people want to be passionate about what they are working on. MS denying them that right was the most stupid management decision in Xbox’s history.

Microsoft messed up big time!

Bungie could have directed 343i to make halo games whilst making destiny for xbox which is absolutely perfect for the subscription model.

Imagine having all destiny 1 and 2 part of game pass continously 👌

They wanted different, but same.

Much like the internet people who complain about lack of variety in gaming.

They’re hired guns and will work anywhere. They built up their value and got bought. Was probably the plan ever since they went solo.

As soon as you say 'No' to something then it becomes a battle of principle most of the time. Both sides too hard headed to reach a compromise.

Bungie took a gamble that sticking to their vision would be better than pitching a counter offer of a Halo-esque GaaS. Despite the problems Destiny had and Destiny 2 has, you can't argue with their success.

I suppose the biggest question is if the guardians were spartans would the reaction be better from the Halo core than the reaction to Halo 4 and 5.

Having control over your own IP is the way to make real money. Work on a huge IP someone else owns, and they will always use that as a cudgel to make sure you get as little as they can get away with giving you.

Easy… they wouldn’t have banked $ 3 billion for themselves staying under Microsoft’s thumb

But MS owned them and it was out of their control. They were simply allowed to leave. Makes no sense.

Yup, MS didn't give two craps about creative freedoms for their developers. Their attitude was, "you'll make what we tell you to make".

This was around when they took Rare and had them make Kinect game shovelware. They turned what was one of the most renowned studios at the time and turned them into a joke.

I don’t get Bungie at all. From MS to independent, then tied to Activision, only to pay to become independent. And now bought by Sony. I think Bungie is Bipolar.

Technically, they weren't even brought by Sony in the traditional way, it's some weird half measure.

But they aren't the only strange company, remember Insomniac was being pressured by Sony and they wanted to control their development and own their IP, and then Insomniac ran straight to Microsoft, still independent and keeping their IP, but then accepted a buyout offer from Sony?

There's also revisionism here, Microsoft gave their developers a lot of freedom, too much freedom, and many games from them during the 360 ended up cancelled, delayed, or flops. Rare is the key example of a company Microsoft Took in which outside of Viva Pinata and Conker Reloaded released fail after failed after underperforming game. Then Kinect Sports came out and became their best selling game in the history of the company.

Microsoft started to be more strict, for their bigger studios, middling ones still had freedom, after having several years of sales failures or goal missing software.

Ironically, Microsoft has gone back to giving developers a lot of freedom in the last several eyars which has resulted in delays, cancellations, and failing to meet projections. More delays if anything.

Microsoft needs to find a balance so they don't have 4 games slated for 2022 move to 2023

I get the creative freedom part and MS wanting them to make Halo but im sure they could have come to a better agreement.

Not like they make a ton of different games - don't they just have Destiny which is similar to Halo anyways in concept?

This is exactly why right there. They wanted MMO lite Halo and MS wouldn't fund it so they found someone else and reskinned it.

I am a Sony gamer and I agree. They wanted more creative freedom which resulted in Destiny which feels like a neutered Halo to me.

Sony has them now, but they seem to continue just making Destiny so for me its whatever.

Halo and Destiny are nothing alike. It doesn't feel similar at all, Destiny feels like call of duty.

Bungie don't like having anyone in charge of them really, from what I remember they butted heads with MS alot. They definitely did with Acti, blaming them for alot of stuff (sure, acti are cunts but I don't believe everything was Acti's fault. If anything Bungie have gotten greedier since the split with MS)

Give it about 6-7 yrs and they'll be crying for independence again.

Thats a bit hyperbolic, they are both space shooters with alien enemies with Arena PVP and semi-open world single player stories with slight differences.

Yea they feel slightly different when shooting but they are more similar than you lead on.

They bought their freedom to have complete creative control, and their greatest "idea" was to have guys in cybernetic exoskeletons wear cloth cloaks and capes over them.

No, give it 3 years, when the leaderships employment contracts that guarantee creative/publishing control run out.

Then they'll leave the company and start their own... sometime after that.... probably with a hiatus in between if Sony negotiated a non-compete.
