WIRED has given Hogwarts Legacy a 1/10 review score

This whole fiasco is a shame really, its pretty clear they are doing more harm than good even if they have good intentions. Instead of helping the trans community they are creating potential transphobes. You can already see it with people attacking this persons looks rather than the article per se.

The person is literally calling us all murderers, racists and the cause of societal decay...

You'll excuse me if I call it a fat, disgusting, dildo testing chode in return.

Giant Bomb were going down a similar route with this game and over the last few days Jeff Grubb has admitted the approach has been counter-productive.

A trans friend of their site, Samantha Kalman, got a job working on a new map for Apex Legends not so long ago, which would've been an ideal time to engage with the community positively instead of destructively. I don't think they ever mentioned it. 🤷‍♂️

So open critic and metacritic are quick to stop review bombing from users. But what about reviewers? If we can call this person a game reviewer considering what they were reviewing before.

For a 1/10 it has to be borderline unplayable. This is just pathetic and I hope Warner bros take action against Wired. This isn’t a review.

oh boy i think people are going to harass him/her, good luck.

So now these person is going to get a ton of hate online and then go cry about how they feel unsafe and use the gage as the reason. 😵‍💫. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy of stupidity.
i won't bother her at all. she wrote what she thought was right. i did, however, already cancel my subscription and will be writing the editors about my extreme disappointment that they approved a piece like this for publication. it has 0 shred of journalistic integrity. there is no world, and no scale in which this game is a 1/10. even if you HATE Harry Potter (sup @dark1x) the game itself is stable and mechanically sound enough to rate far above that. this author likely volunteered to take this review so she could shred it. she even write some legitimate criticisms -- criticisms that would earn a game a 7, maybe a 6. not a 1.

a 1/10 is unplayable trash
a 1/10 is the $0.99 shovelware on the eShop
a 1/10 is recycled unity assets

Already canceled mine in August otherwise I’d be canceling now.

If anybody still subscribed to this joke of a magazine, now would be a great time to cancel and let them know why.

Only unlocked the traits for your character but the game is easily a 9 or 10. Large castle to explore, Hogsmeade as your one stop shop and hub to restock on consumables and get some gear or change character appearance and you have a sizable Overworld to explore at your leisure. This is like a 3D Zelda or Witcher game as a mage and I love the crap out of it.

Like if you want to you can just explore stuff forever before even tackling main story progression.

This outlandish hatred over a video game over the hatred of a single person is ridiculous and only serves to encourage people to be transphobic not because of the game but the people hating the game. This just hurts transgender people instead of helping them.

And let me say it again...it's over a video game.

Sadly I fear this whole toxic saga could stand to do some serious damage to the trans community. I’d like to think the hate being directed to the game and those who play is just coming from an extreme and vocal minority and not the broader LGBTQ community, but regardless they are increasingly alienating a huge number of people. Given games are more popular than film and music combined, and this could well be the biggest game of the year.

There’s a non binary girl in my wife’s pole/hoop class who has posted on her socials that if any of her friends play it they should just unfollow her. My wife is scared of posting that she’s playing and loving the game, it’s the first game she’s been excited by in years, and grew up loving Harry Potter.

As this gains more traction, and the level of venom and toxicity increases it could turn a lot of people against the trans community. Given Donald trumps main new platform he’s running on for the next election seems to be focussed around “woke gender identity politics”, promising to codify in law that there’s only two genders, I can’t imagine it’ll be long until the right wing press start going wild with these stories and using it to drive votes. The last election was actually very close (just 20,000 ish votes in the right places would have flipped the electoral college). They don’t need too many people to start to feel alienated and bitter, and then receptive to their messaging to tilt the outcome. This won’t do it alone, but it certainly will not be helping. It’s all extremely damaging and self destructive.

For a game that goes out of its way to ensure inclusivity and diversity, it’s a real shame.

I bolded the parts of your post that resonated most with me.

All this cultural war hoopla and discord, even within what people call "communities" (LGBTQ+, trans, black, Asian, autistic, etc.), is why I personally use the word "population" instead.
Just because some people (myself included) share certain traits with others, it doesn't mean everyone agrees on specific issues, or that there's even a group consensus.

And especially for HL, there's a range of opinions among the populations, but unfortunately those with the irrational opinions and unhinged responses are making the wider populations look bad.

I agree with your concern about events like these having potential for more people to turn against trans people, and to even go backwards on LGB people.
Whenever I see or hear about these cultural war clashes, I worry about some of my good friends (some trans, some LGB) being smeared by the actions of the terminally online Twitter goons and this Wired writer.

I know it sounds selfish and it hasn't happened yet, but the worry is still there and I'm not sure what to do to alleviate it.

... That all aside, I give this Wired review a 4/10, not in my top 1000 reviews.

Okay serious question because I need a good game to play. Is this a good game because y’all are Harry Potter fans? What if you don’t like or are indifferent to the IP?

I don't agree with the way the review was approached in general, but fundamentally, it's their decision. This doesn't affect me personally and I'm sure WIRED has lost more credibility than it has gained from people looking for insightful information about a potential purchase. We do live in interesting times for sure.

Wait, Wired is a print magazine? That awful review isn't just for an online rag? good lord

It was a fantastic magazine in the mid 2000s. I remember quite a few articles that were before their time, like ones focused on ed tech before it really became a "thing", creative commons, crowdsourcing (pretty sure wired literally coined that phrase), or ones focused on ethics of social media. As a teen who loved to read it felt like it focused on stuff no other magazine did. Once print started to die it went down hill extremely quickly though, when I eventually unsubscribed it felt like every other page was just trying to sell me something. Wikipedia says Condé Nast bought the magazine in 2006, which feels about right because I'm pretty sure that's right around when it started to go down hill. I think I held on for another couple years before finally unsubbing right before I left for college in 2009.

The writer has a right to her opinion, and WIRED has a right to publish what they want, but it's poor form to weaponize a review like that. Make an accompanying opinion piece if you want to editorialize.

I could care less about Harry Potter, never read the books or watched the movies. And I am enjoying the game a lot, it is a very well-made game and fun to play.

I'm gonna buy every one I know a copy now.
I went to Target this morning to get a copy. The guy had to talk to another guy who had to go unbox the game. Just by being back in the retail store made me think. What kind of mess will this cause at other stores? Imagine the obnoxious teen or internet troll harassing people while they make the purchase.

This journalist obviously isn’t a pro if she thinks her piece does anything but attempt at making a scene. It’ll drive sales, just like the radicals with GTA, Death Race, and Mortal Kombat.

My step daughter threw a giant fit knowing she couldn’t play it this weekend due to other things going on. I told her about this whole thing and she thought it was stupid as hell.

I like this one even better.
I bet if you actually spoke to her. She’s nothing these people make her out to be. It’s all face value with this cancel culture. No pass go, don’t collect $100.
