PSVR2 | Review Thread

Idk why a lot of people are surprised by reviewers having a issue with the price. No matter here you try to justify it, this headset is expensive.

PS5 = $399
PSVR 2 = $549
VR2 Game = $59

Total price to experience PS VR2 = $1,007+ plus tax

That is a hefty asking price especially when you consider the lack of PC support which limits features compared to cheaper headsets like the Quest 2. It also doesn’t have a big library of games compared to other headsets at the moment which is important if a consumer is deciding on picking this up now compared to other options.

The tech in this thing is amazing but that doesn’t matter if you don’t have the game library or features to push it, in the future if Sony supports this thing it will be a beast and with a price cut it might take off but there is no question this devices has red flags and the price is a major red flag because alot of people are not sold on VR yet and that price does not help to push this at all.

You got to keep in mind for this thing to take off it has to appeal to a wide audience and the price is and will be a major issue for people to want to give this a chance.
This is all common sense, and everyone knows this. Some people are just having a meltdown because of extremely minimal criticism.

You don’t need a PC to use the Quest 2 it’s a standalone headset.

Also the fact that you need a PS5 is one of the reasons the headset should be cheaper, if the PS5 is doing most of the hefty lifting why is the PS VR2 still so expensive if it can’t do shit on its own? Sony is definitely overcharging with the price, the bastards already charged my card the day the reviews dropped now I can’t cancel and have to wait to ship it back …. Smh lol. I might still keep it, we will see.
Well maybe it costs what it cost because of:

Highest quality lenses
Highest quality OLED HDR screen
Built in Eye tracking
Lots of other tech, that you don't have in other headsets for this price
So no, it should not be cheaper, Sony could ask 1500 bucks for this piece of gear and it would be comparable to other headsets that are sort of in the same class (which have lcd screens lol)

That’s a good upgrade but being tethered is the biggest drawback to vr, as mentioned in many reviews. Is it worth the trade off?

Yet People are spending that just to change their CPU (without more content mind you, just to add 10fps to Fortnite). And poor (like really poor) people are spending that every 3 months just to change their smartphone in order to better see their useless digital stuff (instead of buying better food for their family).

In what imaginary world those people claiming "it's expensive" are living in? This world doesn't exist anymore.

Just watched the digital Foundry review. Amazing reviews from John.

Tech looks incredible. Amazing work Sony, what a headset. Deffo picking up on sale. Just need them to offer free upgrades for every game. Please get astro bot over and I'll trade in my old headset psvr for like 10 quid I bet lol

Please officially support pc

I really like how it doubles as a 200inch 2d monitor with 120fps. The screen is actually viable now for that.

Because they forget to make any comparison to PC prices. Look I can do this:

Oculus Quest 2, 499
PC 1200
Games 50 a piece?

Oh wait, that is not expensive right? Do they complain about this? No, that's why people complain about these reviews. Then they suddenly say: Yeah but you already have a pc right? But omit like: But yeah, you already have a PS5 right? See the selective argument they make here? And lets be honest, those 1700 dollars, don't offer an experience that come even close to PSVR2. That's why. Those reviewers are just salty about their expensive tech becoming worthless overnight. It's very transparent and such low blows hurt their credibility I'd say.

The moment the PSVR2 works with PC. Suddenly the 4 meter cable won't be any issue anymore for these people. I don't care about these dumb reviews from these salty people. They just admit that their PC headset feels worthless right now and they want a better one.

I also hope to see it work with PC in the future so i that i can use it on both PS5 and my PC. But downplaying the PSVR2 as something expensive and then compare it with much more expansive hardware is just laughable.

You mean, just to play Roblox with 10fps more. The hardcore PC guys do not need to talk a minute about "expensive" or "high" prices. The same moment they downplaying the PSVR2, they purchase a new $2.000 GPU to play the same games without any worthwhile or big improvements over their current performance.

Please see the price in context. Yes it might be 4+ months of food for you, for the people living in Sweden I can buy 3 headsets a month instead of food lol.

Edit: I meant to type 2 headsets a month. Same stuff basically though.

Headset is incredibly cheap, especially compared to comparable tech. It’s even cheaper at launch the psvr1 in comparison, yet infinitely more advanced.
I live in Sweden. The krona is not in a good place and the economy as a whole is horrible. 4 months was an exaggeration based on getting the console, headset and one game. But yea, some people live on that. If you are wealthy it’s ofc no problem, but it has to sell to mainstream to be sustainable more than a year or two. I don’t see this being that.

I think people thinking Horizon was a killer app were jumping the gun, if there was any it would be GT7 but that's not out yet.

The people having a meltdown are PC gamers and other VR users that can't handle this is better than any other headset out there and cheaper.

It's not better than any other headset out there. It's very good for the price though and does have advantages over more costly headsets

And poor (like really poor) people are spending that every 3 months just to change their smartphone

Lol, this isn't happening.

This is all common sense, and everyone knows this.

Have you been viewing the VR threads that last several months?

Sounds good... i will most likely pick it up. Glad it has a single wire now i think i read? Really wish the stupid thing was wireless already though :/

I live in Sweden too :). Yep the Swedish economy is terrible, and yes maybe less people will buy the headset vs better economic times. But if you make that argument in your reviews, then do that for all products that you review. What reviewers do here though is being mega selective. Take e.g. MacBook M2 Max reviews, they're close to 50K kronor for the cheapest option, but do they complain about the price vs economy there? No they don't. That's the difference. It's selective journalism to try to talk down an awesome product because they cannot handle the devaluation of their old stuff.

Is the "theater mode" mostly just a gimmick? I'm sort of curious to experience some of my favorite movies in VR. I'm curious about everything you can do aside from play games designed for VR. Can we play games that aren't designed in VR, and control the camera with our head? Idk what I'm talking about, but I'm interested in supplementary features. Can I watch all of the Simpsons I have downloaded onto USB?

"With that said, there are some ancilliary benefits to PSVR2 that may sway you in terms of the purchasing decision. The screen is good. It's really good. If you're still gaming on an older 1080p screen with questionable HDR support or no HDR support at all, the theatre mode for regular PS5 gaming is exceptionally impressive. Owing to the head tracking, it's perhaps not as good as a regular 4K OLED, but it's broadly similar to gaming on a 1440p screen - albeit with excellent HDR and 120Hz support."

From digital foundry's review. I am glad he at least commented on this mode, and it sounds pretty good. But how does a 1080p signal using only the middle pixels of two 2000 x 2000 panels somehow looks as sharp as gaming on a 1440p screen?
I mean if this is true, that's great, but how?

It's nice, but you do tend to still get fatigued having a headset on. But it's a legit huge screen for watching movies. I also really like internet browsers in Quest since you can make multiple tabs and move them around and they're all 6 ft tall. I've never synced it up to a keyboard and mouse, but it's pretty handy.

Ultimately you will probably go back to watching movies without a headset, but it works.

Downsampling, that's how.

I don't get the "no games" / "not enough games".
There are more games that I'm interested in at launch than time I have to play them. (Moss 1+2, Kayak VR, Demeo, Horizon).
Don't you people have lives? You spend 12h a day gaming or something?
I feel ultra lucky when I manage to get 2h to game in one day.
God of War Ragnarok took me 2 months+ to finish.

I think most gaming journalists have already played almost all of those.

If you're new to VR then just ignore that part about the library then.

I can down sample the crap out of a 4K signal onto a 1080p TV and it still doesn't look as sharp as 1440p.
How close are you sitting to the set? Pixel density matters.

The tiny screens with that high of a resolution have a very small pixel density.

Same. There's so many launch titles that I can't be bothered with more than three to start. Then within the next month is even more.

It's a 1080p projector, so 80-100 inches depending on where I put it. Not to say it looks bad, very good in fact. Just not 1440p sharp is all. Not disparaging the mode in general.

For movies on Quest 2 it's fine. For 2D game it's great because you have this gigantic screen that wouldn't fit in a normal home, but it looks about 1440p or so. Fucking crazy to play retro games on though. I was playing psp Gran Turismo and it was legit awesome at 8x native resolution. No pc required.

But psvr2 is superior to that outside emulators. Just imagine hooking your ps5 up to a movie screen and playing God of War etc. You can look around the theater like you're actually there too but it's higher resolution.

this kinda looks like shit.
Not sure if I want to downgrade my 4k oled hdr quality to... 4k hdr oled quality but with worse graphics lol.
I've had so much vr since first oculus dk1 .... 10 YEARS AGO... that "just being vr" is no longer a thing that draws me in
watch some of the other reviews of this , it is one of the best looking VR games out right now ,

It's hard to say for 100% because of the quality of the videos, but it seams in line with Forbidden West. Can't say for sure about textures or shaders (scarf has similar fresnel so it can be the same cloth shader), also probably the fuzz isn't present. Besides that it looks good (maybe even better then the HFW - the fur looks softer). The problem is in the lighting - they are using bright sky light/HDR/ambient light that's why it looks flat (shadows are very light). In few other videos (review of the game from Eurogramer) there are other scenes with her with more contrast between shadows and light and she looks better. Still I think that they are lacking in contact shadows/self shadows, so there are light leaks like in her mouth.

Also we need to remember that cut-scenes look better but in VR you can't do that (at least not without taking camera off from player).
