Elden ring update 1.09 is out

Great game, love it. Poor performance in current-gen console builds.
I love it too but it runs bad. This is normal with From. Honestly thinking of not buying another From game if they don't change the engine or learn how to optimize properly their games to run good. Do we need a ps5 pro to run Elden Ring 60fps locked? God...

Can you guess which has RT on and which doesnt?

Theres a difference but you'd be surpised to see which one uses RT. Well maybe not you, cuz you're a PC gamer but most would be wrong.
Bottom has... RT AO?

And what about XSX ?

New feature

Ray Tracing support has been added for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC versions.

Ray Tracing can be activated in the settings menu:

  • PS5 / XSX: Game Options > Ray Tracing
  • PC: Graphics > Ray Tracing Quality

WTF
[*]Minimum

  • OPERATING SYSTEM: WINDOWS 10
  • PROCESSOR: Intel Core i5-10600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT
  • MEMORY: 16 GB RAM
  • GRAPHIC CARD: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, 8 GB or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, 12 GB
  • RECOMMENDED GRAPHICS SETTING: 1080p - Low quality – Low Ray Tracing

Here's a hint, look for the self shadowing on the trees and foilage, no idea what the performance hit is like but it's an ok imporvement without knowing the cost and if it's applied to all light sources or just the sun. Would rather GI but the RT shadows give the vegetation some depth at least.

char shadow in the top one is sharper, has more details, so I'd say that one.
I just saw Lance's tweet and rt made it look worse to me lol
I'll check the game later but like almost everyone else I'd prefer to have performance improvements over this any day.

Don't people ever get tired of the whole "Fromsoft are bad developers" shtick? I just sort of find it exhausting. I think their track record as a word-class developer speaks for itself. They made in Elden Ring, one of the greatest games ever, but... they're bad developers and they're incompetent? C'mon. Like, at what point does that just sound straight-up foolish

Pretty funny people expecting FROM to add a notoriously expensive visual effect and simultaneously transforming performance to the better!

Sure... that sounds realistic!

Almost best this game but gave up on the Elden Beast. Was just no fun chasing him around with my melee build. Having seen all the content, just didn’t seem worth the 4-5 hours of team it would take to really memorize all those attack patterns to win.

This game already runs like fucking garbage and I'm playing the PS4 version in PS5 BC mode. Yeah, good luck with that.
Well that's the mistake your making, because the PS5 version running in performance mode runs way better than the standard PS4 version running on a PS5 in compatability mode now, this was fixed about a week after release

Honestly do not understand the people still playing the game like this, all you're doing now is gimping the visuals of the game for no reason

that last phase on NG6 just hits like a truck. you just have to learn all moves and how to mitigate.

You guys know you have to totally restart the game when take in comparison pics right? The shadows on the trees should be completely different in most instances.

It’s not a huge difference but you should be able to tell.

"Slightly reduced rolling travel distance for light equipment weights."

Slightly?
Holy crap, FromSoft. I don't think you understand what that word means.
It's completely nerfed now. Rolls like a heavy load.

I think maybe they got sick of so many people doing nude RL1 speedruns in their game.

From developers are great at combat and encounter design, art design (Elden Ring is amazing), and many other things.

They are terrible at performance optimization. Every single game of theirs have had issues. Elden Ring has many documented performance related problems.

This RTX debacle is an illustration. Any other dev would at least put in DLSS, FSR or both to offset performance hit. Yet here we are. Not to mentioned performance issues still present in the title which are only somewhat mitigated by a recent top CPUs.

Nah I don't think that's it. I for one have 353 hours (!) in it, love the game. We're just having a "I'm on no one's team"-discussion about certain aspects of it.
Yep, it's alright to criticize them for their shortcomings. This shit has been going on from PS3 Demon's Souls (technically even before that).

From/Bamco can afford to hire a few optimization devs, they just don't care.

This. They lack tech wizards, and it is unfathomable that after becoming one of the most beloved developers (and all eyes are on them) they refuse to add to their team people much better at optimizing the tech aspects of their wizardry.

From Software games have a history of looking rather flat, with the character often not looking really grounded in the world. I take every bit of more depth, but without DLSS/FSR...

Global Illumination would have been nice. But at least they didn't bother with reflections in a game you barely have any meaningful ones. It's been already a waste of resources in Hogwarts Legacy (on console at least).

Redownloading the game on my PC. Really curious to see how my 2080ti will fare at 1440p.
40fps ultra settings/3440x1440 on a 3080 Ti+12900K/32GB VRAM. It's fine inside but once you step outside, your fps gets chopped in half.

I was hoping they would at least optimize performance mode (no RT) more.

They probably have tried, but objectively without completely re-writing the engine you can't expect a night-and-day difference. And even then if the underlying game code is eating a lot of resources gains by definition will be limited.

There seems to be a misconception that simply drawing stuff faster is enough to transform performance, but that's not always the case. Sometimes its necessary to completely re-think the entire data pipeline top-to-bottom in order to maximize efficiency and minimize bottle-necks.

You can see this in UE5; the impressive advancements Epic have been able to make are 99% data-driven. They've not simply tweaked stuff, they went back to look at the most basic elements like how meshes are constructed and decimated down based on distance/LoD.

Spectacular stuff indeed, but its not without compromise. Look at the Matrix demo and you can see that the cost of all that insane geometric detail was accompanied by an almost complete absence of animation within scene elements. To match the detail on the "actor" objects (like cars) they had to lean hard on buckets of pre-baked Houdini animations.

What I'm trying to say is that there are no free-lunches. Its all consequential, and the more complex a piece of software gets the more these side-effects spiderweb out in all kinds of unexpected directions. Its not like an 8-bit game where you can pull frames back by simply re-writing your scroller routine or your sprite handler!

Lastly, in the case of FROM's stuff, they are clearly working from an established tech-base. Elden Ring is part of a direct lineage that goes back to 2009's Demon's Souls, and was what? Their 4th release with that engine on the PS4/Xbox One era's iteration. Expecting them to completely re-write their entire engine and tool-chain for this one cross-gen release was never realistic, especially given how much was fundamentally shared with these older releases.

I mean it has to be the bottom one right? Shadows are drawn further, you can see it clearly on the bushes and trees in the near distance, the player character shadow is also much softer, versus the old very sharp stencil shadow.

Edit: Oh I'm late af and everyone already knows the answer.

yeah because the game was SO optimized to begin with. So let’s add RT without DLSS. Genius Japanese dev, genius.

I find it visually pleasing, loaded up snowy section (my favorite) and it looks like it has overall more atmosphere in the image. Tried on XSX, it is certainly playable, nothing like Witcher 3 v4.0

Okay, installation complete. I'm going to try it out, see how it's doing on my PC XD

Wait, they did that for PvE too? I thought they only messed with PvP at this point?

Huh, actually reading the patch notes...
Added Holy damage and Faith scaling to the Great Club

Everybody was saying this was supposed to have been the case all along.

My STR/FTH build is a little more interesting now.

Oh, I Command Thee, Kneel ash of war is faster now? That axe was uselessly slow before.
