Alan Wake 2 Will Be Digital Only - Keep Price at $59.99 for Consoles and $49.99 for PC

Plot twist: we saw the whole game.

This being a "straight to dvd" equivalent doesn't fill me with confidence.

Anyone pre-ordering this is a brave soul.
I will be that brave soul.

WTF, Remedy? Why there's no disc versions? Jesus fuckin' Christ... It means there's no way for me to buy the game for PS5 cuz I don't want to deal with VPNs and other BS and I'm not buying digital games for consoles ever and never will. EGS is simply not an option out of principle.

None of this is a valid reasons to abbandon physical releases. Since when having a box, a cover and a disc is the reasons why new games are $70 now? PC don't need physical release so fuck it, but consoles do need them cuz there's a lot of people still buying physical versions.

Come the fuck on, man...

Ps5 is region free. Just get some psn cards if your region is different than your credit card.

Yess! Finally someone gets what I have been saying all the time: Having only digital games in the loop prevents resales and allows for lower digital prices.

I guess this may be a first market test subsidized by Sony and others to monitor what happens if they go all digital
You're too naive, they're going to sell their 'first' digital-only game cheaper to convince people it's the way to go, but will raise the prices eventually blaming inflation / development costs / whatever. You'll still pay the same or more, just without the option of owning a copy of the game.

By making it digital? LOL. I can promise you most ppl aren't smoking what you're smoking bro.

I was interested.
Saw epic only release...
Guess I'll experience this game for free on YouTube or twitch. I have no interest in anything epic except free games for as long as they promote exclusives on their store.

I know it's region free, but 1) PS Store is not working in Russia cuz of Putin's aggressive and unjustified war against Ukraine and its people 2) SWIFT is not working 3) I'm not buying digital games on consoles out of principle, only physical games.

Yep. Chasing short term monetary profits will hurt them in the long run. Which makes me wonder, how much of this game will be unfinished or rushed by the time of its release? Do they not think they can get the game finished and patched on disk before printing?

Makes me think that the game is oging to have a lot of issues.
I would agree with this too, that trailers actual gameplay was janky. I honestly thought it was RE 9 but super early

Huge Alan Wake nut, this was 100% a day 1 game for me regardless. Now I get to use some of that MS Reward money to get it for 'free'.

I'm probably gonna get the deluxe. Buying the 2 story DLC episodes separately's likely gonna be more expensive.

I keep telling that to everyone, but yet I get mocked and laughed at. As I've said, only a matter of time until physical is fully gone.
This feels like the kind of game that proves that digital only big AAA releases are commercially viable.

People are kidding themselves if they think this won't move digital units if it reviews well (which it likely will, it will take a LOT for this to score below an 8 imo).

I doubt it'll be digital only, more like timed digital only.

Their profit margins are higher this way after all. I think it makes sense to release a game exclusively digital for a period then physical.

Otherwise they're sending it to die.

PS5 version it is then. They probably can't be arsed to implement proper DualSense in the PC version anyways, as theyve shown with Control.

The game looks amazing though.

In my opnion it's not going to be a good case (for Epic and other publishers). The first Alan Wake didn't immediately sell millions of copies, it actually struggled to reach nice sales goals long-term. It's not a coincidence that it's taken over 10 years and money from Epic to fund the sequel.

I think Remedy becoming a bigger name in the AAA singleplayer space + the strong marketing will make this into a winner.

I don't like physical going away but even I find myself going for digital almost every time.

The good thing is that I like the majority of actors in it. Aiden Gillen and Lance Reddick (RIP) are royalty in my eyes.

I used to think the TV segments will be shit tier before playing it as well, but even that's better than your average sci-fi TV schlock .. and it meaningfully adds to the games plot and lore. Plus Reddick is the primary antagonist in the TV portions, can't go wrong there.

The gun play is also pretty good and you can see some hints of how it evolved into Control with the powers and such.

They're definitely still living in the 90s

people crying over physical games will never not be hilarious to me

Ever thought to consider that people might not have the same disposable income as you? Physical games are cheaper and give you the option to resell.

Why on earth would you want game sales to be monopolised? Forspoken is £25 on disc now or £65 on the Sony store, you think the former option not existing would be a good thing?

'Living in the 90s', get a grip, physical sales are probably much higher than you think:

Is it finally happening? :messenger_beaming:

Thank you Epic for being the first to go all digital. Someone needed to do it. The game trailer didn't interest me but might pick it up to support this change towards an all digital future. Hopefully other publishers see how well it does and decide to ditch physical releases for their own games.

Physical has been dying for a while now but it needs to die completely and for good.

LOL at the people saying they won't buy it. Well don't? But when it starts happening to more games you're gonna need to make a decision: suck it up and step into the future OR give up on gaming.

If you hadn't noticed yet... Sony and Microsoft are preparing people for digital only future. Last gen Xbox released an all digital console. This gen BOTH Xbox and PlayStation released an all digital console and Sony are rumoured to be releasing a PS5 with removable drive as soon as this year. Now, who wants to guess what will happen next gen? It's quite possible that we might get no console with support for playing discs.

There is zero point in buying physical games. It's time we get rid of them.
Are you serious?

Digital games on consoles come with high monopoly pricing and no rights. Here in Australia a new release digital game is between $119-$130. Physical version usually $79-$89. I can finish that game and on sell it which I usually do. I can also buy a new game second hand literally a few weeks after release from someone else that has already finished it for like $50. I can also gift a physical game to someone or lend it to my friend. This has always been part of gaming culture.

I still have a big digital library because I like the convenience of digital but those have been purchased when on sale. Until Sony and Microsoft start bringing in more consumer friendly practices like competitive pricing, gifting a game, better return policies etc. Digital only can fuck right off. It's about choice and principle. I don't understand why people are advocating for digital only when you have the choice already? How does it negatively impact you to still have physical games as an option?

Next gen may be digital only but why are you wishing away physical so quickly.. Give ppl a choice. There has been so many AAA flops in recent years, why the fuck am I going to pay $120+ for a digital game that might be shit and unlike steam for example you can't just try it and refund it within the first couple hours if it's bad, good luck getting refunded from Sony.

Sorry to break it to you, but games aren't going down in sizes since they're getting more complex these days with motion capture for one example. And we have something called 4K TVs now and you can have a look at the file sizes of movies in 4K etc. Yeah storage sizes for games ain't going down bro. Fact.

But hey you can keep yourself to the next Ori game, or Tunic cause that's what you're saying indirectly you want. I'm sure there are games out there with less than 10gb space, but yeah, they're not gonna be AAA games prolly so you really don't have anything to complaing about with your logic. You certainly shouldn't even be commenting on this thread if you think Alan Wake 2 looks like it can run on less than 10 gigs or whatever
Woah BRO! You sure are getting in a pissy fit for nothing. Apparently you think it’s impossible for games to reduce their file size with compression or optimization.

Not day one then. They almost got my day one money which is a rarity these days. 30 eu is the most I'll pay for a digital only game and then only if I really really want it.

They are suffering a HUGE backslash on the PS5 reddit. Many people saying they are not going to buy the game anymore.

Amazing news. Have been digital only for about 9 years so I’ll take the ten dollar discount thanks. Hopefully more publishers will follow

Epic are the ones who should be blamed for this decision, I don't think Remedy wanted to go all-digital since all of their previous games had physical releases (including AW1 remaster).

Jedi Survivor could've been easily released on 2 discs like Cyberpunk or FF7R. It was merely cost-cutting from EA combined with the build not being ready for launch.

They could release it on 2 disc's, but apparently they are allowed not to by Microsoft and Sony, so this trend will probably continue.
