Alan Wake 2 Will Be Digital Only - Keep Price at $59.99 for Consoles and $49.99 for PC

Not sure why this is getting shocked reactions, Alan Wake 2's not even the first survival horror to be digital only, we had Project Zero on PS5 with no physical release a year or so ago (and they even did a 'digital' deluxe edition...)

What time is it?
Well, I'll wait for a deep sale on Alan Wake 2 then.

Meanwhile, here's something that I'll buy day 1.

Pretty funny that this needs to be said: He says things could change but the game on the disc should be playable

A lot of the auxiliary reasons for owning physical are going away, especially on the preservation front. It's far more common to have broken, incomplete or discs that serve as little else than an unlock code for a digital download as opposed to the instance where the disc comes in handy (Last Guardian that allows for 60FPS when it is unpatched on PS5, though I think the you might not be able to complete the game in that state iirc). It's a large reason that I've gone away from physical as what's on the discs is often obsolete. I still collect Switch games, even though those games often have the same issue, I just don't trust Nintendo moving forward.

But the primary benefit of physical is still there in transfer of ownership, so I'll never begrudge someone wanting physical. I just don't buy games casually anymore and if I'm unsure about something, I'll just wait for a deep discount.

This lie keeps getting pushed. The vast, vast, vast majority of physical games require/demand no updates to be played at the start. They are not broken, they are not unplayable, they are not "unlock codes". There is only a very small minority of primarily AAA games that are such.

Who said they can't be played from the start? The vast, vast majority of games receive patches to make the experience better either fixing performance or bugs and often get additional content. That's what makes preservation on consoles difficult as you either get versions that were printed to discs/cartridges or the latest patched version and nothing in-between. If you want version control, buy on GOG and store your library locally. And kindly fuck off with your "pushing lies" narrative.

I pointed out that this is a lie. No, I will not "fuck off" either. I do agree with you that preservation should be done better for games that end up having expansions and DLC. There is no reason games like Forza Horizon get delisted with no chance of ever getting a complete copy. Release a complete physical version before you delist.

LMAO why would you do that Remedy? You're going to miss out on so many sales by people like me who buy physical. People would have paid $69.99 for it too. I don't understand this one bit.

Epic footed the bill for development, so makes sense that it’s EGS exclusive. I notice ol Timmy’s doing something right in charging us $10 less, since Epic doesn’t have to pay themselves a royalty.
Yes, this is why I think this is the right way to have exclusives, not taking away have that were already developed and even announced for a platform. I'll probably get it on console though, Remedy ports to PC tend to be badly optimized and buggy.

Remedy is fucking clueless. We know that Series S is digital only and the PS5 has a digital only console. Do you know how small a % those are though? I believe the PS5 disc version is like 80/20 and let those people who buy digital buy digital. Let us physical owners buy physical. Remedy has lost the fucking plot.

You're too naive, they're going to sell their 'first' digital-only game cheaper to convince people it's the way to go, but will raise the prices eventually blaming inflation / development costs / whatever. You'll still pay the same or more, just without the option of owning a copy of the game.
You might be right but let's say all games costs 100 USD digital only – how many games would they sell? Those who only buy games used would not buy a single copy then. They would have to adjust down the prices in order to reach higher sales. Can't keep the prices at Apple levels of insanity.

I was interested.
Saw epic only release...
Guess I'll experience this game for free on YouTube or twitch. I have no interest in anything epic except free games for as long as they promote exclusives on their store.

They fund the game bro. Its like if Half life Alyx appearing on epic game store.

Yes but

Also Remedy didnt make any money of Alan Wake Remastered which might factor into Epic's decision.

It’d be a real bad look if Timmy Epic, can’t even offer an optimized release of a game he paid for using his engine.

Which I wouldn't mind at all?
While it is most convenient for me to buy all my games on Steam, I don't demand them to be only on Steam.
I'd be happy if all games were on Steam, Epic, GOG and whoever else wants to make a launcher!

I hate exclusives. The same goes for Steam, yes I wish they'd allow other stores to sell games like Half-Life, Portal, TF etc.
Everybody should be able to experience the games on whatever store or platform they want.
The difference, why I am so against Epic and not Steam, is that Epic moneyhatts games onto its store, and they hit me kind of personally when they took away Satisfactory for around a year, even though the game already had a Steam-Store page etc. That's when I went from saying "Exclusives are bad" to saying "Exclusives are bad, but also fuck Epic in particular".

Don't worry guys, just wait for the big announcement next month:

maxresdefault.jpg
FUCK LIMITED RUN. I'm not giving these guys another cent of my money anymore. Ridiculous shipping times, poor communication and lack of shipping notifications (never got a notification that my copy of Mighty Goose arrived, other people have received their copies of Espaluga 2 and TMNT Collectors Edition and I haven't gotten mine yet, etc) pretty much turned me away from them. Most of these games can be imported from Play Asia or other places for cheaper and you don't have to wait as long.

Other companies (Strictly Limited/Signature Edition) are more transparent and more communicative with faster shipping times for similar products. Also, Play-Asia. Why wait for Limited Run for River City Girls 2 when you get you a double pack of 1 and 2 for less than the price of 1 from Limited Run? NO BRAINER.

Is it finally happening? :messenger_beaming:

Thank you Epic for being the first to go all digital. Someone needed to do it. The game trailer didn't interest me but might pick it up to support this change towards an all digital future. Hopefully other publishers see how well it does and decide to ditch physical releases for their own games.

Physical has been dying for a while now but it needs to die completely and for good.

LOL at the people saying they won't buy it. Well don't? But when it starts happening to more games you're gonna need to make a decision: suck it up and step into the future OR give up on gaming.

If you hadn't noticed yet... Sony and Microsoft are preparing people for digital only future. Last gen Xbox released an all digital console. This gen BOTH Xbox and PlayStation released an all digital console and Sony are rumoured to be releasing a PS5 with removable drive as soon as this year. Now, who wants to guess what will happen next gen? It's quite possible that we might get no console with support for playing discs.

There is zero point in buying physical games. It's time we get rid of them.

How is it DOA?

Plenty of people will happily buy it digitally and people who really want to play the game won't care if it's digital only. The only people who won't buy it are the ones stuck in 2005 and refuse to accept the future.
Why taking away options to others make you happy? Enjoy your overpriced digital games and being tied to a mega corporation store front, let others enjoy what they enjoy and avoid being scammed, kids theses days....

I bet you Steam would release HL:Alyx on EGS if EGS allowed it. Which they won't, since they curate their store.

You can buy a Steam key for Alyx on mostly every internet retailer tho. Can you do that for Epic games?

I think (not 100%) that if you pre-order, your funds should be taken for this. Not 100% sure.

You can check the payments tab in your microsoft account, if the money with the june timeline is still there it means it hasn't taken it yet, if it's gone, it means its been taken for the pre order.

Good. What's the point of a disc if the game on it is an alpha build and the real game is finally patched in a year or more after release?

There ain't gonna be any PS5 backwards compatibility either. They may do the "upgrade" like they've done for PS4 games but that was mainly done to have any releases around launch.

Modern games cannot be completed on time because 80% of the team does no actual work.

After release development begins and the productive members of the team are left to get work done.

I’ll let you in on something. A PS5 disc can go up to 100GB. They could easily fit most of the important stuff on there and maybe require an additional download depending on how competent the developer is.

If a game like the latest Mortal Kombat is around 100 GB and still has a physical release coming out then something else is going on and that’s them cowering in fear over used game sales. This is the main reason why companies are desperately pushing for digital only. What did the remake of 1 do that poorly in stores? I’m guess that’s exactly the case with all these nice online sales I’m seeing right now.

So there you go mystery solved. Unfortunately for them they don’t understand that potential buyers will still wait for heavy discounts. Their plan isn’t as fool proof as they think it is.
