Xbox plans to exit gaming business if "off-console" Game Pass subscribers don't increase enough by 2027

No, it’s a biggie if MS bows out. You could then expect a PS6 that doesn’t really have to try to innovate or push the boundaries and come in at $100+ more than they would have charged. It would be the opposite of a’win’ for Sony fans.
Get real.

MS aren't competition for Sony. Sony increased their prices and still comfortably outsold xbox absolutely everywhere.

If anything it's Sony stopping MS charging $800 for a series x

Whenever Microsoft can't completely monopolize an industry they just give up and leave. They did it with phones against android and ios. they did it with MP3 players ,ZUNE against Ipod. They are about to do with with tablets, Surface vs IPad. If microsoft can't completely dominate gaming, they will also do with Xbox. This is what Microsoft does, they can't just make a lot of money, they must make all of the money.

Why are we acting like this is some revolutionary statement. Microsoft is a BUSINESS if they are spending money left and right on Gamepass games to the tunes of billions of dollars the install base needs to explode. Id be saying the same thing in this situation its just the plain truth.

However Microsoft betting their entire business on GAMEPASS is a bad idea. There is no need for it.
Largely agree accept for the last part. While there is a world where MS makes good money eating Sony's tablescraps and sits comfortably in third place cashing checks, shareholders demand growth. Just my opinion, but I believe Xbox had to change the paradigm if they wanted MS to continue to allow them to compete in the gaming hardware space.

Gamepass is all they have left for better or worse. If they even have a shot at making it work, they have to go all in. It could fail for sure, but I'll enjoy the benefits in the meantime. Again, just my take.

Not going to lie, I don't trust Jimmy without Xbox to keep him somewhat honest. Sony's pricing shenanigans keeps me with a critical eye.
Yeah - but that was WITH Xbox in the market. MS isn’t doing anything to change the course of the industry. The only thing that influences competition is money — either through expansion opportunities or adjusting for contraction or poor pricing/positioning.

Microsoft isn’t influencing any of those dynamics from the 3rd place position.

None of that really makes any sense, even if they exit the console hardware business they would be a huge software player. So exiting "gaming" wouldn't happen.

Not sure why some of you keep saying gamepass isn't sustainable, it's the hardware side that MS hates losing money on to sell the software........

True. I was just looking at the pricing angle.

Will they please at least make the controller with gyro, and not wait 5 years, I could use it now, why was it not standard this gen.
seem to be doing it with that new 2024 controller, at the cost of ergonomics. Now the main reason i love xbox controllers has been sullied to look generic and uncomfortable.

I'll have to hold it in my hands to really judge the ergonomics...just hope I get the chance to lol. It doesn't look necessarily bad though the dual color scheme in the pic isn't doing any favors

This was from when he was on the stand at the FTC trial no? I would take his doomer assessments with bit of grain of salt in that case. It was in his favour to make it sound like they were in a weak position market wise.

this. it's something people as old as me have been witnessing since the company's inception. microsoft simply does not believe in 'competing'. it's just not something that's present in its corporate dna...

If you want to do cloud gaming you'll need a cloud service with shorter than 30-120min queues.

I already said nearly 2 months ago that they clearly want to get out of console. If they can't make that big play that they want to make, it's sensible for them to drop out. I mean, I know for certain that I'm going back to PC main with a new build late next year, might pick up a Switch 2 after some years. We're already back on arrogant Sony mode so MS quitting would just send them into overdrive.

Its his views on hypotheticals so not something to treat as gospels yet.

Regardless, Xbox won’t go away if they off ramp I bet / hope. Plenty of money still there to be made from it by someone willing to make smaller profit than MS grand vision for GP. Companies the size of MS aim higher because they can and have countless options for higher return potentials.

Hopefully the studios have a chance to move on. I bet a number of them are already looking, between this and the bloodbath thread.

What Xbox/Microsoft should do is learn from the success of Hi-Fi RUSH. Fund games that are smaller scale but more creative, and make those Xbox exclusive. Funding a dozen of these would still be less expensive than buying Sega and going "NOW the Xbox brand is saved!"

How? MS last tow big games this year were at 30 fps.
4k is extremely demanding. And consoles are still not up to par with 4k demands. ESPECIALLY true when trying to max other aspects out as well.
No need for ultra shadows and textures when in many cases, high and sometimes even medium look almost if not exactly the same for far less cost.
I've played Starfield at native 1440p on my pc with a 3070, runs nicely.

Redfall was rushed.
Noway it looks and runs that bad due to hardware when other games look and run better on the same platform.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Wait...he is saying that they need to 100M subscribers in total by 2027?

No, he didn't say that.

The 100m goal is for FY29, FY30, which is roughly calendar 2030, 2031.

The thing about 2027 is that he wants the PC/Cloud subs to increase. Hence the "off-console" comment.

Why why and why. Sony, Nintendo, and Valve all compete by doing their own thing and brining something to the table. Do we really need a trillion dollar company that wants all competition gone?
Do you understand the definition of what consumer competition is and how it works? If you did, you would not be asking why.

I honestly have no idea what he's saying. Doesn't seem to make sense to me. He seems to suggest that console subscribers need to be much more than the graph depicts by 2027 otherwise they exit the business then goes on to say that PC and Cloud actually need to be larger. Seems like he's just bullshiting his way out of answering a question.

I could ask you the same. When a competitor bleeds money and can't make shit people want to buy, they go away. Do YOU know how competititon works?

What is it about ms specifically that makes them so crucial? Nin, SIE, and Valve are all rocking 100 million users and stacking cash. What is it about this one company floundering with their primary strategy being to eliminate competition?

Angling to buy nin or valve is competitive? Do you know how anti-competititon works?

Why do we need that when you already have 3 huge brands that compete by actually selling good product and staying out of the red? What is so important about that 4th hanger on?

What 3 only 2 including Microsoft makes a home console. Mobile and PC are zero interest to me. If Sony raises prices you think people are downgrading to moble gaming?

Valve's platform is much like a console without the hardware. And now they offer dedicated hardware to complete the illusion. If sony raises prices, people spend their money on something else. Whether it's nintendo or valve or books. It creates and opening for nintendo to court 3rd parties again. The three adapt and find new ways to steal each other's lunch and make money through thick and thin. That's REAL competition.
