Steam Deck OLED Announced: Coming November 16

Damn.....that sucks. Where do you live?
Bristol. I know a few people who were in the same delivery - arrived in Uk Friday night, and was in the depot for delivery at 4am - and they went out Saturday and Sunday. Not sure why I’m stuck on Monday, but here we are.

what’s the best thing you’ve tried on the new screen?

Haven't been able to play a lot so far. Played some Baldur's Gate 3 and that looks really good even at 720p. Getting 40fps with FSR 2 Balanced. Also played some Black Mesa which isn't the best on handheld. Bought Subnautica and Dave the Diver yesterday off the Steam sale and going to try them today. Also going to play some Atelier Ryza, but not hopeful as it didn't run very well on my Rog Ally.

I'm one the fence to sell my LCD and buy the OLED.

Please tell me what glass you choosed and why? I'm still not sure if I should get the glossy or etched one.

No regrets with my LE etched screen. I've always preferred non-glossy screens and, for me, the reflectivity on my Rog Ally is more obvious and distracting since I've been using my etched OLED. And as I said previously, if this anti-glare screen is somehow muting the OLED even the slightest, I can't tell. I'd have to have them side by side and then maybe, but even then the reduction in reflections (which will show up even inside whether it is a lamp or window) is a good thing.

Since a screen protector will largely negate the issue with either screen, personally, I wouldn't recommend anyone base the decision on that. Really, I'd say the most important factor is storage. 512 GB is the best value and upgrading these things is incredibly easy. But if you want 1 TB out of the box then nothing wrong with that either.

Nice! Let us know how you like it vs Ally!

First, the performance downgrade is noticeable. No question about that. Playing RE2R and I'm seeing a bit more stutter whereas Rog Ally is very smooth. The game is still very playable though. And for most games that I'm going to be playing on SD, it won't matter. Subnautica, Dave the Diver, West of Loathing......no problems there.

The screen on SD OLED is more superior than YouTube is able to demonstrate vs seeing SDO and Ally side by side. Just looking at the game cover art in Steam will show how the colors really pop on the OLED.

I'd forgotten how easy the Steam UI was to use. For strictly using Steam games, there is no comparison. No need at all to ever go into desktop mode. I probably will at some point to set up GOG or EmuDeck, but I have plenty to play right now and am enjoying Steam goodness.

Nice! OLED does make a big difference. I saw that with my Switch, monitor, etc…

Yeah it's hard to do OLED justice in pictures that people usually view through IPS displays. I remember Vita games looking pretty bad when I saw gameplay off Youtube but when I played with that OLED display in person, it looked amazing despite sub-500p resolution in most games. Such a shame that Valve didn't commit to a 4nm APU for Steam Deck. It would've transformed SD.

Is there anyone who has an oled deck which doesn’t have static on the 3.5mm audio port with headphones plugged in (from the wifi/gpu). Just wondering if it is a design fault, faulty unit or software glitch?

Hmm, ok. I was watching a video on youtube (can't remember which one) that was saying it ran like crap.

Acts 1 + 2 will run very well (30+), but Act 3 used to run 15-25fps. Now it runs 20-30fps with FSR2. It still needs another performance patch or two, but depending on your tolerance it went from unplayable to ok, or not. Could always Moonlight Act 3 though I guess, but it does run well throughout acts 1 and 2 which should be 50+ hours of gameplay at least.

I haven't tried the 3.5mm audio yet but is this happening all the time or just when waking a game from sleep mode? Audio cracks happen (on SD speakers) from time to time when resuming a game from sleep mode, I have experience this on both lcd and OLED now.

1 - Now try a few HDR games, like Ori 2. The difference in screens really shines then, to me then it really feels like you're looking at visuals that the LCD model is simply incapable of conveying. Also I still have both devices so it's pretty apparent every time you're playing something dark on the LCD, the light bleed on the blacks or just the blacks being lit at all is much worse. Like this:

Moonlight/Chiaki Steaming
LCD 4 / 10
OLED 10 / 10 (Both will soon have HDR, support 90fps, and also can use WiFi 6 for better connections - everyone who's used these has stressed what a huge upgrade OLED Deck is for them, and actually running PC games at 800p, 90fps seems like a great way to get those 90fps on Ultra settings for a very long time haha)
Ally/Go 8 / 10 (No HDR or OLED, thus worse visuals, especially with HDR games - which is probably the main reason you'd want to use streaming - newer games that don't run native, could be 9/10 if gamepass was a big factor, for me its not though, but still won't have HDR so playing over PS5 streaming with HDR would be better on the Deck than over gamepass w/o it, and I'm actually not sure how well gamepass runs if you do go through all the trouble, and put on Windows maybe it is capable of HDR, but I'm just not interested in gamepass)
Picked up Ori 2 and looking forward to trying out the HDR. Games need to have HDR support for HDR to work right?

I'm also curious about how well the remote play works with chiaki on the sd oled compared to the ps portal. Can't seem to find any youtube videos comparing the two.

Yes, they need to have HDR and they also need to have the HDR working in Steam OS. Since it is still so new it may be a bit longer until the selection is vast for both conditions, but for now there's a dozen plus I've read impressions of being from good to incredible, with Ori 2 being on the incredible end.

Chiaki is supposed to work incredibly well, I've seen a few screens and read impressions - outside some app / network issues that seem to effect some people. Again I'd expect them to be cleared up in due time if they even are a widespread issue, not an isolated one.

It happens all the time - whenever the sd is producing sound anyway (navigating the ui, gaming etc). It is silent on startup until the logo and chime.

What the actual hell?

Tried chasing up ParcelForce UK this morning to see why the status of mine is still stuck on "Arrived in UK" since Wednesday 22nd and they've said:

Hi, I am sorry, your item will be in the process of being returned to sender. Items sent with our partners GLS Netherlands bound for Northern Ireland are due to be forwarded to our partners GLS Ireland, not our sort centre in Coventry. Please contact the sender so they can raise an enquiry with our partners GLS Netherlands if the item has not yet been returned to them.

I don't have any issues with the controls on mine, is there a few games to really notice the issues on I might have? Just fighting games like MK or KI?

You need to grab Ori 2 and check out the HDR! Just imagine how great that will look if/when Chaiki supports HDR streaming like Moonlight. There's way more HDR games on PS5 than PC I think too, or at least I feel it's more expected on console games than PC games.

Just tried it, you were right, it does look amazing. Yes hopefully they add it in.

Was also think, valve should release something similar to xbox and apply "fake" hdr to the games that don't support hdr.

Let us know when you get chaiki working, my experience was better on the oled, the portal had too much smearing during fast movement. Response Time was better too.

Does HDR look good on chiaki? On the portal you have to turn it off but im curious since the deck supports hdr.

What games are you playing on steam decks? I can imagine action oriented games, platforms and old school games, being very good.

I assume the OLED screen could turn some of the older titles into masterpieces.

I play everything on my Deck, as long as performance holds up. Heck, I even played Fallout 1/2 and Arcanum using trackpad and custom button layout and it was fine.

OLED unlocked a whole new world of possibilities. Darker games that looked like complete poo-poo on LCD, now look amazing. Think of games like this:

or this:

Best console ever.

my OLED Deck I ordered on Saturday is already packaged, hoping it ships out today via UPS so that I definitely have it by the upcoming weekend 🙏🏻

edit: I have a tracking number for UPS! 🥹

This whole situation makes me think of the upgrade from Gameboy to Gameboy Color. Considering the OLED you can argue it's basically the same thing, lol
90hz screen, better haptics, improved shoulder buttons, improved battery OLED screen, RAM is slightly faster for better performance in some games too. Oh and it has better thumb sticks. There are probably other changes too but those are just the ones I could think of.

Coming from the 64GB LCD, this feels more like a mid gen refresh console to me. Its a superb upgrade in my opinion.

On a different note, I've been looking at getting Hifi Rush to play on this. Looks like a good fit for Steam Deck.

Really thankful for the thumbstick upgrade. I had to buy grips for the og SD because my thumbs kept slipping. Definitely one of the most well thought out refreshes I've seen. Some called this thing a "cash grab" but I think has proved to be anything but.

It really is mid-gen refresh, or rather early-gen refresh we are only over a year from initial release and deck 2 is probably 3 or so years away.

If you guys plan to play Ori and the Blind Forest I recommend you go for the the Switch version on Yuzu rather than Steam's. It looks much better thanks to the animations running at 60fps instead of 30, a shame Moon studios never went back and fixed the PC version.

Just got mine in hand. Agree on everything, coming from a 512 LCD. It's the way I wanted the steam deck to be from the start. Seeing blacks be actually black and the colour be colourful is just amazing. 90hz feels amazing. Feels truly great.

Just picked this up on a whim a couple days ago and I’ve been playing the shit out of it on the Steam Deck. Highly recommended.

This looks good. Spent maybe ten seconds on the store page before buying it. Thanks for the recommendation.

EDIT: It also supports ultrawide on PC. Love the game already. There's a lot happening on screen but I'm sure I'll adjust when I know what's what.

I have seen people say Control, RE3 Remake, PGA Tour 2k23, Tony Hawk Skater 1+2 are all very excellent (and Ori obviously). Cyberpunk 2077 is said to be good as well. Diablo 4 it works and I've read is noticeable (not great but good), and same for Doom Eternal. LEGO Skywalker and Pinball FX the HDR is supposed to be good as well. The list isn't terribly long yet, but it should increase a lot over the months. There's more but I need to start keeping a list myself, I didn't get everything yet.

Mostly Bethesda RPG & Rockstar Games

Fallout 3 & 4,Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas
GTA 4 & 5, Red Dead Redemption
Vampire Survivors
Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
Tales Of Vesperia
Middle Earth Shadow of mordor & War
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Bioshock Collection

64bitmodels

Reverse groomer.
GTA 4 & 5, Red Dead Redemption
this is a funny one. despite RDR2 being extremely demanding, if you turn down settings you can get some really good battery life, especially on the OLED model.

all settings low, 800p and 40hz can net you 3 hours of game time portably, and that's on my LCD. You're likely going to get even better time than that with the new OLED.
