Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ declines -87% over the huge week 1 units but holds on to No1 for a second week.

It’s a new release bonanza with 9 new titles in the Top 40 and 5 of those within the Top 10. Ubisoft mirror last year’s Assassin’s Creed (Brotherhood) by debuting at No2 in the week after Call of Duty launch, thanks to ‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’. Sales of the latest Assassin’s Creed are indeed a Revelation for Ubisoft as the title beats last year’s title in both units (+4%) and revenue (+8%) for week 1, to become the most successful of the franchise and also of any previous Ubisoft release. It is also the first Assassin to stealthily arrive as a Tuesday release and around 61% of sales during week 1 were completed in the first 24 hours. Only 14 franchises on 360/PS3 have arrived on a Tuesday in the past 5 years, (including the 2 released this week). Bethesda’s ‘Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ drops one place to No3 (-62%), followed at No4 by the next big new entry, THQ’s ‘Saints Row: The Third’. Week 1 sales for the 360/PS3 versions are an impressive 43% higher than previous best, ‘Saints Row 2’ from back in week 42, 2008. EA’s ‘FIFA 12’ drops one place to No5 (+7%) and we then have 2 more new releases: debuting at No6 is Microsoft’s 360 ‘Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary’ which was also released on Tuesday. Debuting at No7 we have Nintendo’s Wii ‘The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’ followed by EA’s ‘Battlefield 3’ down 5 places to No8 (-40%) and we then have the last of the Top 10 new releases at No9, Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario 3D Land’ for 3DS. Just outside the Top 10 is EA’s ‘Need for Speed: The Run’ debuting at No11, somewhat down on last year’s ‘NFS: Hot Pursuit’ which debuted this week last year at No3 with close to double the week 1 sell-through. Also new this week is Warner’s ‘Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7’ at No13, Sega’s Wii ‘Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games’ at No20 and Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Disneyland Adventures’ at No39.

Zelda getting outsold by Saints Row on 360....DAMN.

08 (__) WII The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Nintendo)
So dumb.

Black Ops dropped 85% in it's 2nd week.

http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=982&s=1111

So MW3 started lower and is falling faster than Black Ops. Seems that the series growth really has come to an end at last.

I'm surprised at Saint's Row 3's performance BTW! It doesn't seem to have bombed completely... yet! (THQ will live for a little bit longer than I expected...)

SM3DL has done pretty well too! (and will no doubt get a boost from its post release advertising and the 3DS console bundle)

Here's hoping that the post release advertising for Skyward Sword gets people into stores, because that isn't the greatest of starts.

The people who buy Just Dance 3 are not the same people who buy Zelda. I hate the term "casual" but JD3 sells to them they wouldn't be buying SS.

My girlfriends favourite series is zelda, she also really likes just dance 3. In fact 2 of my other female friends love zelda and just dance.

Zelda is pretty popular with women so i think there would be some crossover. I doubt it's really affecting sales though.

So MW3 started lower and is falling faster than Black Ops. Seems that the series growth really has come to an end at last.

Will have to wait and see the US numbers first.

It's a shame that AC: Revelations appears to be doing well. Doesn't bode well for the continuing abuse of the franchise.

Perhaps he means "disappointing" in that two system exclusives/lead ips were outsold by this third party title?

SR3 is great by all accounts, so glad to see their quality is rewarded.

Anniversary is where I expected, really wonder what MS have as sales expectations for it.

Do we know how much NFS did last year? The Run did about half.

Someone explain to me what is this 90% in UK sales?

Chart Track don't release 100% number (estimated) like NPD?

Chart-track estimates they track 90% of the market, but don't extrapolate to 100% of the market for individual titles, they just report actual tracked sales with this disclaimer;

• All sales figures represent our estimate of sales through the listed outlets.
• Companies who are particularly strong in outlets not sampled are understated as a consequence of the panel structure.
• As of January 2005 the Chart-Track panel is estimated to be around 90% of the UK retail market (85% July 2002 - December 2004 and 80% pre-July 2002).

ELSPA/UKIE use the raw "90%" for the defunct "ELSPA Sales Awards" and the Monthly Top10s supplied to Famitsu.

For overall software market and hardware they generally extrapolate to 100%. When Chart-Track occasionally give out sales figures for the general media they usually say "estimated" and extrapolate to 100%.

I use "90%" as the only regular numbers we get to calibrate are the monthly charts in Famitsu which are also 90%.

Zelda and Mario were only out two days for this one, right? That's probably why. Really hope they didn't bomb...

I'm happy with SR3, though.

They didn't bomb. Especially Mario.
And, however, they'll have far better legs than the other games released this week, remember. They're Nintendo games.

Nntendo titles besides Smash brothers never open that big nor are as frontloaded.
Expect Mario 3d land to hang on the charts for a long time to come, Zelda probably less so.

Pokemon is front-loaded AND has legs. :p I guess we'll see how they hold next week.

Thanks for explain.

Skyward Sword seems to have opened to a worse first week than Twilight Princess which released to a base of 105,000. With Wii-U releasing next year I wouldn't put much faith in it have better legs than TP.

Very few Nintendo games explode out of the gate and typically sell on the strength of their legs (Smash Bros Brawl is the only exception that springs to mind)

The Xmas season should be kind to these two games (especially Mario, which will get a further boost from the 3DS console bundle)

That's just nuts! Mind you though, that was a very different time, where few games (unless they were bundled with hardware) sold on the strength of long term sales (SSBM, Goldeneye N64, Pokemon and Rayman PS1 are the only examples that come to me right now)

Nintendo games starting low and selling on the strength of their legs is a more recent phenomenon, so it may yet outsell Twilight Princess.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit didn't show up in Nov '10 charts, and no data about it in weekly blurb so no first week numbers for that one unfortunately.

Uncharted in free fall.

ACR up only 4% with 3 more days than last year is not good.

Ahh, forgot about that! So it's (highly likely) actually down from last year in real terms.

That's two major series that have stopped growing in the UK now (Though Elder Scrolls has of course grown massively)
