this is giving me a demon's souls vibe, it has a castle, dark design, action RPG, seems pretty grounded.

What the hell is this? Pick a director, release a piece of art, and then look to hire a team of people through outlets such as Famitsu? What the hell, SE >.>?
They have had a core-team of 35 people working on this so far, doing all kind of initial design & planning and getting the project started. Since it is going to be a (supposedly) massive, possiby next-gen JRPG, they are now starting to hire people to do the grunt work.

How is that too much different to how many other developers work?

Action Adventure RPG based on the story of Auron from Final Fantasy X.

Why do they always place their sword on their shoulders?
Swords are somewhat heavy and you can't always be bothered to put your sword back to your sheat if its in heavy use (as in, murderous rabbits & giant rats can attack you at any time)? ;P At least when I've had to walk with, say, a shovel for longer periods of time (I'm a biologist and sometimes I have to dig the ground in forests etc. :p ) , it's nice to have been able to rest my hands by placing the shovel on my shoulders. It takes the weight off my hands. :p

Plus it looks cool. :)

That actually looks pretty slick. Love this dark fantasy stuff.

SE, you just need to keep all the anime bullshit out of this. And when it comes to storytelling, take a page from DS: less is more.

The picture seems a CGI work from 1997 -.-'
C'mon Square... I expect something more from a "MEGA RPG"...

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Looks interesting. Of course it's Square Enix so it will likely be shit but at least it's not another Final Fantasy game.

Square Enix details Unreal-powered action-RPG

http://www.next-gen.biz/news/square-enix-details-unreal-powered-action-rpg

Ryutaro Ichimura is heading up development of an action-RPG, using Unreal Engine 3, for publisher Square Enix.

Ichimura, co-producer of 2009 DS RPG Dragon Quest IX, told Famitsu magazine that the un-named project is being made for a worldwide audience; 1UP's report says that concept art shown in the magazine more closely resembled Elder Scrolls than Final Fantasy.

"We do have a worldwide market in mind with this title, and we're prepared to deploy along those lines," Ichimura said. "However, we're not trying to make a game for overseas gamers - the challenge we're undertaking here is to present a fun game to the entire world that only Japanese people like us can make."

Ichimura is clearly mindful of Dragon Quest IX's performance overseas - where it sold less than a quarter of the 4.3 million it sold in his native Japan - and says he has taken his time to ensure he understands overseas tastes.

"I think Japanese studios have a tendency to make these 'good enough' imitation backdrops when they're making a game set outside of Japan," he said. "We're working closely with our overseas staff to keep this game from winding up that way.

"We're not trying to push what we want to do on others - our approach is to gauge what gamers want right now and take that one step forward. That's why I've been travelling around the world for the past two years to fully investigate our potential userbase.

"If anything seems off to the gamers in terms of art style or the test gameplay, we write detailed reports and rework the problem area. Now we're finally at the point where the foundational research and technology is pretty well set in stone. It's a new experience for me, but this trial-and-error approach is what I've set out to do from the start."

Square Enix is increasing headcount as work on the project begins in earnest, and despite the atypical, customer-focused approach to development, Ichimura has been pleased with the speed at which progress has been made thanks to the use of Unreal Engine 3. The publisher announced that it had licensed Epic Games' platform for multiple projects earlier this month. No name, release date or target platforms were announced, though Ichimura apparently hinted that the game could be released on next-gen consoles.

What exactly is wrong here? Last I checked western RPGs don't exactly do gangbusters in Japan either

I've done nothing with my life except eat and fap
I think art style is the main obstacle for japanese games on their to WW domination.

Okay a scan has come out, but it's pretty small, so my vague descriptions might not be entirely accurate.

There are basically three characters and what I assume is supposed to be a concept art of a gameplay scene.

The "gameplay scene" reminds me a lot of a game in the Devil May Cry genre. It kind of looks like an area in Old Vigrid, but with some red demony/fleshy stuff on the walls. The main guy and the three characters in the distance all seem to be radiating steam. I can't tell if the other people are villagers or enemies.

Character 1: This seems to be the main guy. He looks like he's in his 40's and is reminiscent of a gray haired Count from 400-500 years ago, but with a modern comed back hairstyle you would see 40-50 year olds have. It looks like he's wearing the same outfit as the teaser image, but it looks much more normal (for that era) from the front.

Character 2: He's kind of like Adam Jensen with shorter hair, but in his 30's or late 30's. He has a jacket with a ton of buttons down the front, but still fairly era appropriate looking. He's also holding some kind of crazy thing I can't figure out.

Character 3: She's a ~25-ish year old girl with whatever would be the modern evolution of Audrey Hepburn's haircut. She's mostly entirely covered, though her dress has a circular cut that goes like 2-3 inches below her neck. Imagine a dress that wasn't trying to show off cleavage.

They're all pretty pale, potentially as vampires or something of the like. That could just be the art style though.

Basically you can think of the art style as them looking at how people actually looked during that era and then redoing it to be more appealing in the present day, though by more appealing I mean "to a large, broad audience of people" than like what you would normally envision Square Enix doing.

Saw the scan earlier today. Looks so interesting. They nailed the art perfectly. Consider me very hyped for this.

Wish I could see the scan. But, going by your descriptions, these characters seem pretty outside of the Square-Enix norm, which is a very good thing. I get a Van Helsing vibe from your descriptions.
