Cave Story 3DS |OT| Definitive version, for those of us who have never played it

Nuclear Muffin said:
Absolute rubbish. It's a placebo effect and nothing more. DSiWare games run in exactly the same resolution as every other DS/DSi game and receive exactly the same upscaling treatment.
I'm not sure you know how placebo effects work. No one ever told me they would look better, in fact I had no reason or expectation to believe that at all before buying a few games on the eShop.

I should clarify that the downloadable games look better mostly due to the colors. I don't have many DS games, but The World Ends With You and Clash of Heroes both look really washed-out on my 3DS. I guess maybe they're all just extra colorful to begin with but every downloadable game I have doesn't suffer from this. It's true I haven't played them on a DS, but with the cartridge games it looks like someone dialed down the Color setting on a TV.

The resolution is still an issue, and I could very well be imagining the overall picture being better because of the colors (I'm usually not one to care much about resolution or scaling unless it's really bad), but there's no way I'm imaging the difference in color saturation, it's extremely obvious.

I doubt that it's that low. It's probably only using a 256MB 3DS card (the smallest and cheapest one available) and I can see the 3DS version of Cave Story using a good chunk of it (mostly from the pre-recorded audio)

That being said, I'm sure that excuse is a load of rubbish. They probably just don't want to kill the sales of the DSiWare version (which is a smart decision)
Ah, I thought the smallest was 512MB, I learned something today. But yeah, sure seems like they weren't actually trying to let it happen.

Just found out that there's no playable Curly mode or Prinny. Is this true?

Probably DLC, right? I mean, this IS NIS after all.
No Curly Story mode and
there's only a Prinny hat hidden in a new area
. The game doesn't seem to support DLC (no spotpass options and released without the November update), so there's about no chance of that either.

Kind of disappointing. Curly is on the cover of the box and since this is supposed to be the definitive version (not to mention a $40 game), I'd expect more content, bonuses, and other things.

At least DLC.

I'm willing to bet that NIS is planning to release this on another platform (possibly ios or PS Vita) with extras like the Curly mode and maybe even playable Prinny (like we all expected with the Prinny tease).

It still is the definitive version, as far as the actual game goes. But yeah, they ought to have included all the other bonuses from the WiiWare version, kind of silly that they chose not to. It probably would've been worth the price tag if it wasn't a game I already played about twelve times.

I own the Wiiware version/remake... haven't played it yet.
Having said that, is this version worth it? Portability is a huge plus and all the reviews seem good so far.

If you like Metroidvania style games and like to explore, then I'd say yes. If you think you'd just blow through it, I don't think it's worth $40, especially right now with a ton of amazing games coming out every month.

Cave Story is pretty unique though, the story is really well done and if you're into taking your time and looking around the game will reward you for it. The 3DS version looks awesome too, the backgrounds keep impressing me and at this point while I do still love the look of the original it's kind of boring to go back and lose all the sense of place the backgrounds give you.

As I said earlier though I doubt I would have bought this if I had ever paid for the game before. I'd at least play a bit of the version you already own to see if you like the beginning before you pick this up.

I'm quite convinced that Curly and other modes were originally supposed to be in the game. I doubt the "We ran of disc space" is a good excuse to why they didn't include these bonuses.

I think they will be DLC (or was planned as DLC, depending on sales). Even without spot pass, I think DLC should work with a SD card.

Never played any version of Cave Story before this 3D version and I'm having a ton of fun. Can't wait to dig into more. Performance is solid and I'm pleasantly surprised that the visuals look really good (compared to those screenies that were coming out).

So I'm seven hours in and I just beat
the first "boss" of Sand Zone and got the machine gun.
I really dig this game a lot so far. Some parts are pretty tough, but I'm loving the challenge. I thought those ghost things were OP until I realized they only release the RROD upon "dying". Man that messed me up for a while. The bosses have definitely been a challenge. Will post more impressions later!

How the hell did it take you seven hours just to get that far??? Even if it's your first time playing, I don't see how it would take you more than a couple of hours to get there at most, and that's only if you're REALLY slow.

Is it just me or is anyone else having a real hard time seeing where enemies are? I even turned the 3D off, but Egg Corridor was just a mess with seeing where the jumping lumpy things were. Platforming feels a little awkward, too, it definitely doesn't seem to have the same precision as I was getting on the PC.

First time Cave Story player. Beat it with 8:02 in the Activity Log. Some thoughts:

I thought that it was a really well done game. I can see why this game receives so much praise. I'm a big 'Metroidvania' genre fan and CS absolutely shares some of the genre's aspects of it (upgrading of weapons, no double jump but a booster for jumping, exploration aspects, etc.).

The gameplay was solid throughout. I enjoyed the varied gun types and found myself switching a lot. My most-prized gun was
the sword
. I read that
there are guns I didn't even receive?
.

The game flows so well, too. Never really a dull moment. And provided to be a decent challenge! There were a couple of sections that had me reloading multiple times to power through.

I loved how there were enemies & red flowers that were one-hit deaths. Maybe that's the N / N+ / Super Meat Boy fan in me talking, but it definitely helped me keep on my toes.

The soundtrack is worthy of a mention as well. Really great stuff there.

End game / last boss spoilers:

I did the bad ending and the normal ending. Did not know there was another ending out there until I read about the game after beating it. The last boss ended up being a little difficult for me... but once I learned all of the patterns, it wasn't TOO much trouble.

To Verilligo's point: I did find, especially in the Egg Corridor, that enemies were tough to see. For me, though, it got better. Also - I had some imprecision problems until I moved to the dpad. Using the dpad really helped.

Question: there are three options on the main screen. The second option is still ???? for me even after beating it. Anyone know what it is?

Highly recommend!

There's another ending with a different final boss and final level altogether. It's very, very obnoxious to get to, requiring you to do some strange stuff in various points of the game that are very hard to guess without a FAQ. I'm not sure if they added hints to it into the 3DS version.

Read up on an FAQ and follow it to a tee. The end game is completely worth going through. You haven't seen the last boss yet.

I'm about 12 hours in and that boss in the Labyrinth the robot looking one) is kicking my ass. I'm not totally sure how to kill that thing, and man is it getting frustrating. The funny thing about the bosses in this game is that almost every one of them has completely kicked my ass several times until I get the hang of it, then I can beat them almost every time. I guess that says a lot about the balance/difficulty tweaking in the game.

The story is pretty decent so far, I laughed pretty hard that the fact that
the main character is a robot
got spoiled for me in this thread, I thought it was a joke.

To answer another gaffers question: I've never played this game before and I only play games on the hardest setting...also I am extremely thorough and re-check every room multiple times and look around quite a lot just to make sure I don't miss anything. I was told that the secret ending was almost impossible to do without a guide, and I'm going to try that my first play-through :D

How the hell is it taking you so long to play this game???!??!?!

Thought I answered that question in the above post, hahaha. I'm playing on the "Hard" setting and almost everything is an instant-kill....how long should this game take on Hard if you've never played before?

It's a very fair game in that sense, but Monster X is one of the hardest bosses in the game. Good luck in

Monster X is still kicking my ass. I can't believe this, I am actually pretty frustrated. Not quite on the level of F-Zero GX Very Hard, but still...

Edit: Finally beat his ass down. I basically used the
Machine Gun to shoot him from that sweet-spot above for the initial phase, used the Bubbline as a shield against the green missile/snake things, and finished him off with the Machine Gun from below.
I almost had an aneurysm when I beat him, damn.

Okay, so I'm at the part where you can choose to
escape on the dragon or not. Going outside and seeing the sky move past me was the coolest moment in the entire game. I freaking loved it and it sealed the deal for me loving this game. I chose to escape just to see what happens, but I'm scared that if I continue too far into the cut-scene/text that the game will auto-save me being at this point and I won't be able to pursue the better endings. I soft-closed the software in the 3DS menu because I was scared of that...can I see the whole "bad" (I'm guessing here) ending and still go back to my file and choose to finish the game?

I'm not really going to continue playing until I get an answer, so help me out, GAF!

Is this a hard game? I was thinking about getting it for Christmas, but I'm one of those people who gives up after a while if he can't win after so many tries.

It looks really good though...

It's tough, but not sadistic or anything (although the super-secret final level comes pretty close). If you can handle Mega Man games then you should be fine.

I've never played a Mega Man game and I've never beaten any Metroidvania's. Sounds like I might need to pass on this one :/

(why the fuck aren't there demos on 3DS eshop Nintendo!?)

It's not too difficult on lower difficulty settings. Hard is pretty challenging but fair.

It feels like the lovechild of Mega Man and Castlevania.

Edit: Play it on easy first. A completion is only going to take about five hours or so. Build up to the other modes.

I am playing this game for the first time ever on Hard. I have 20:17 recorded so far. I've played it 28 times with an average play time of 43 minutes. I just got to the part where you
have an option for the bad ending.

The game was difficult in some parts, and some parts definitely felt unfair to me. I hate enemies that go completely through solid barriers, it's just extremely annoying and lazy development to me. Some of the bosses completely kicked my ass probably 30 or more times until I got the hang of it. Once I did though, I could whoop them pretty hard.
Monster X
is particular was exceedingly frustrating, and I admit I took a break for a few days from the game and played Links Awakening DX instead for a change of pace, haha.

That said, it has been very rewarding, and from the light spoilers I've seen here and elsewhere, I didn't make certain decisions at certain points so the best ending is out of my reach already. I can't imagine NOT getting the
Machine Gun
at the point that I did, holy smokes I used it almost exclusively for a while after I got it! I will definitely give this game another play through at another time.

Also, I have never fully beaten any of the classic Metroid games or any Mega Man game, and I am finding this one to be a blast.

Side note....I just found this guy above the
Cemetary who asks me if I have any business with him and just pushes me away. What does this guy do? Do I find out later or do I have to start the game over? A light spoiler would be appreciated.

Bump, which I never do, because this game really deserves more discussion. I just got
Prinny's Cap, but I'm utterly confused about the area I found it in, plus this weird ghost thing appears as the VERY EDGE of the screen and it is weirding me out. I just got hte rocket built and I think I'm about to fight the end boss!

Sales seem bad. Less than a thousand in Europe and 20k in the Americas, but I don't know which data is most reliable. Pretty disheartening, because from what I heard Pixel quit his job to pursue game creation full-time. Glad I paid full price.

At the moment, he will do nothing for you. There's two major paths in the game that change it drastically at a certain branch point. It's hinted at late in the game, so it's generally accepted that you should beat it on the default path the first time as it seriously ramps up in difficulty in the later parts of the game on the other one.

Prinny's Cap was in a new area added for this remake, just for kicks. The ghost is just an easter egg, but he creeped me out too. You're almost at the end though, good luck on the finale!

Picked this up as part of a buy 1 get one half off at TRU along with Mario 3d.

First off, it looks fucking terrible. Everything looks extremely tiny on the screen, and the colors are muddy and dark. Playing in classic mode replaces all the (ugly) 3d character models with original 2d sprites. Mixed with the 3d environments, this is pretty fucking laughable and equally ugly, yet still somehow preferable to the original mode. The 3d effect adds some minor depth. Unlike with Mario, it started to make me feel dizzy and disoriented within 15 minutes.

The game plays, well, like a fucking NES game. Wasn't sure what to expect because I only snagged it up due to the relatively positive reviews and lack of 3ds games worth a shit. There are no hit animations, everything moves so stiff, and you die easy as fuck. I found myself really straining to focus on what was going on in part due to how small everything is, and part due to how ugly it is.

My opinion is that this is laughable as a full retail 40 dollar product, and I would even hesitate to recommend as a five dollar download. Hardcore cave story fans only.

I was in the same boat as you the first time I played it. Cave Story is tough but not hard until the final boss gauntlet. Misery and Red Doc gave me fits on my first playthrough, took me several play sessions to beat. They really aren't that hard though, I just had next to no experience with the genre.

Edit: Never mind, I was going to warn you that you likely already ruined your shot at the best ending, but I reread your posts and apparently you already know that. The things you have to do to earn it are ridiculous. Like borderline "Kneel in front of the cliff with a certain item equipped in Castlevania 2" ridiculous. One step in particular requires that you totally ignore something fairly interesting that happens instead of checking it out, which I assume would be some people's reaction.

And yeah, you get a special item for refusing the machine gun that's almost necessary for the final area you get with the true ending anyway.

First impressions after getting into Arthur's house:

I think they did a great job replicating the feel of the original's physics and mechanics.

Everything is amazingly tiny. The environments are so far excessively filled with stuff. The color palette is muddy and unpleasant - Rayman 2/3D comes to mind.

The 3D effect looks great, like playing a diorama. I really enjoyed the way they use rotation to make the paths make more sense.

The "classic mode" is an insult. Instead of using the pixel art as is, they smoothed everything. All the characters look dark and smeared. I would have much preferred turning the pixels into polygons anyway, like Nintendo did with Urban Champion. The 3D character models are OK, so I don't really understand why they included that dumb feature at all.

I still haven't forgiven them for not including a 3DS port of the original. Perhaps I am underestimating the work for porting a DSi title to 3DS, but good lord it can't be that different. I'd buy the DSiWare release except DS games, especially pixel-art games, look like shit on 3DS to me.

I got it for $30 using a $10 credit from Amazon. I'm not unhappy I bought it, but I think they could have done a much better job. Sort of like Rayman 3D, actually.

There are no hit animations, everything moves so stiff, and you die easy as fuck.
I liked those things about the original, and I still like them. I'm surprised that people are buying the 3DS version of the game without ever trying the free PC version of it.

Okay, so I'm stuck on the "final" bosses. I'm playing on Hard...holy shit. You cannot save after
any one of the four I've played so far. OMG. When I finally beat Misery I was like, oh yes, now I can save and recoup. Nope. On to the Doctor. Then I finally beat his ass down. Oh yes, I beat the game! Nope. He's now transformed and shoots red shit everywhere. I died. A lot. Then I got extremely good at killing Misery in like 1 minute without taking damage and had to figure out how to kill the Doctor in both forms...ugh. Then I remembered I had one life pot, so that has helped. I almost had an aneurysm when I beat the second form of the Doctor and realized that I did not beat the game....and in fact, still could not save or heal up. That black formed boss/core thingy is strange. I did some damage to it but didn't exactly figure out what I was doing right. Can Misery and that other Mimiga be killed? Are they worth my time? Damn this game is hard, but I think I have the patterns down for Misery and the Doctor and can probably kill them more times than not.

Playing through it on easy, haha, as it is my first experience with Cave Story. Pretty cool game thusfar, I'm in the level called Labyrinth.

One main complaint though: shit is too dark. I really wished they upped the gamma a bit, or ideally have a slider option I can adjust myself. Game developers make the dumbest choices sometimes. This is a portable system with a tiny glare-type lcd for fuck's sakes.

The game kind of hints at it after you miss it. There's no way anyone would think to do that on their first playthrough, but I don't think that's a problem.

FINALLY beat Cave Story 3D. Good lord,I was stuck on the final boss for TWENTY DAYS. I cannot believe how long that took me. I can beat the first three bosses in my sleep. When I figured out how to defeat the final boss, I felt pretty confident I could beat him almost every time now, but damn when he is in his final stages and throwing out five missles, two wall-hugging balls, a kameameha dealy and other crap at you it can get overwhelming. Surprisingly, Bubble gun and the fireball gun saved the day, even though in the rest of the game I almost never used those.

I liked the "worst" ending better. The "good" ending didn't do it for me. There's only three, right?

There's variations on the "good" ending depending on how you play through, but it doesn't radically change. Shoot for the best ending now!

I beat cave story a week or two ago. I really enjoyed playing through it for the first time. I've played through the original game a bit before, but didn't stay with it until the end. I figured dropping the $$ on it would encourage me to finally pick it up again, and it did.

I got hooked in the game and found myself playing it for hours straight. The weapon switching, keeping your levels up, and the game mechanics are a lot of fun. The story is interesting, the characters are charming, and I enjoyed how the game doesn't take itself too seriously.

The 3D effect is pleasant. I played through the game with the 3D on the whole time. The graphics on the other hand do look somewhat muddy and uninspired. There are certain times where the game zooms in and you can actually see the details in the game where it looks fantastic. Most of the time though, everything is too small to see the detail.

The graphics are supposed to be what makes this version the definitive version, and they're pretty middle of the road. I don't regret my purchase at all because it's finally what made me play through Cave Story for the first time.

If you're on the fence... I'm not sure if I'd be happy if I paid $40 for it because I know I could have just got the DSiware version. However, if you find it on sale, pull the trigger. I got it for $20 with the buy 1 get one 50% off at TRU a while ago. Even if you don't love the graphics, the game is fantastic.

So I got this for Christmas. Had never played Cave Story before. I have to say, it's been amazing.

Played a little at first until I beat it, then realized there was a better ending. Then I played straight through again, and did it wrong, lol. Playing the third time was actually not a bother at all really; the game is that fun.

I eventually got all the stuff right, got to the real last boss and ending. I really didn't think I'd be able to beat it. Lack of save points around the end game made it pretty difficult. Definitely a good challenge level, only a bit frustrating.

I'm still baffled that there is no 'original' mode or anything. I don't even care if it's not in 3D, I'd love for it to look better. Not that I usually notice the look either way I guess. I kind of wish there was some extra for me to go back through with; I don't think hard mode is gonna do it for me though, cool as that probably is.
