Corning Incorporation announced today its plan to unveil Gorilla Glass 2 at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, and the company said more product details would be made available Jan. 9.

The Corning, N.Y.-based company plans to “showcase the critical role of highly engineered specialty glass in addressing emerging trends” at CES 2012. Some of the highlights include increased functionality from smaller form factors; connected devices in new applications; touch technology; and, large-format design aesthetics.

However, the main attraction to the Corning booth will be the introduction of Gorilla Glass 2, which is the next generation of the damage-resistant cover glass found on practically every consumer electronic today. CES attendees will have access to Corning experts and products featuring the latest Gorilla Glass applications.

The timely debut of Gorilla Glass 2 comes just before the rumored early-2012 launch of the iPad 3, as well as the rumored summer-to-fall launch of the iPhone 5, leaving room for Apple to include the latest technology on its upcoming devices.

Gorilla Glass 2...nom nom...

indeed..

well X100 in Us is already priced around 1000$ , this camera will be probably better and they can't price cut so much the X100

i think fuji is targeting just high end user, ( interested in a "leica-like" system ) that already have an expansive reflex ( likely full frame camera ) and want something more portable

like Nex7 (and nex5n + viewfinder)

LG reveals Google TV

http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/lg_smart_tv_1.jpg

The LG Google TV comes with the “Magic Remote Qwerty” and a user interface based on Android Honeycomb. The Magic Remote Qwerty is a combination of its voice-controlled Magic Remote with a QWERTY keyboard. With the LG Google TV users can expect an interface and main screen designed for convenient browsing. Those hoping to do a bit of multi-tasking, don’t fret. The search, social networking and TV functions can be run simultaneously.

LG’s Google TV will come equipped with LG’s own CINEMA 3D technology. The built-in 2D to 3D conversion engine allows any 2D content to be viewable in 3D. CINEMA 3D glasses, which are battery-free and relatively affordable, will be required for viewing 3D content. This TV looks promising, however, one specification that has yet to be released is size. But with CES just around the corner, we won’t have to wait much longer for that information.

What's the deal with GoogleTV these days anyways? Honestly I thought they were going to be default on most new TVs this year as a built in service. It seems like the most obvious way to get heavy distribution into the market and put a nice bullet point on the box to sell more TVs.

Is this happening and it's just not being talked about or is Google having problems cutting deals with manufacturers or what?

They're supposed to make a big fuss about it for 2012 according to schmidt.

Google TV 1.0 looked like utter shit, ran like crap, the hardware was based on an Intel Atom (lol), it was just another box under your TV, had some terrible, terrible remotes and had basically no backup from the content providers. Even Logitech, one of the first Google TV partners, admitted that it was a big mistake. Google basically fucked them over with some beta crap.

Yesterday, Logitech hosted an Analyst and Investor Day and during his remarks, CEO Guerrino De Luca pulled absolutely no punches in describing the "mistakes" the company made with its Logitech Revue Google TV set top box. Calling the company's Christmas 2010 launch "a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature," De Luca told investors that the company had "brought closure to the Logitech Revue saga" by making plans to let inventory run out this quarter and that there are "no plans to introduce another box to replace Revue."

De Luca suggested that Google TV was far from ready at launch, going so far as to call it "beta" software on one presentation slide, and that the company made a massive misstep by believing that it would revolutionize television right out of the gate. In short, Logitech "executed a full scale launch with a beta product and it cost us dearly." He added more color about Logitech's failure to read the television market in his remarks:

To make the long story short, we thought we had invented [sliced] bread and we just made them. [We made a commitment to] just build a lot because we expected everybody to line up for Christmas and buy these boxes [at] $300 [...] that was a big mistake.

The mistake, plus "operational miscues in EMEA" cost the company "well over $100M in operating profits." De Luca did throw Google a bone by saying that he believes Google TV will have a chance sometime in the future, but it would be a "grandchild of Google TV" that would do it. Logitech clearly has no plans to help make that happen, opting instead to sit "on the bench" (as De Luca had put it in an earlier call) until Google can find success.

Claiming Google is not doing enough to protect them from digital piracy, ABC, CBS and NBC are blocking programming on their Websites from Google TV. Hulu also blocks Google TV.

Television networks ABC, CBS and NBC are shielding programming on their Websites from Google TV, citing concerns that the service does not adequately protect their programming from piracy.

Yeah, that's what everyone wants to use.

Google TV 2.0 looks like a "reboot" (think Honeycomb -> ICS). The new boxes will be based on ARM, they'll have proper partnerships and the stuff will be build into new TVs, instead of having just another box under your current TV. Though that will be still an option for people who want to "upgrade".

Oh yeah, completely get all the stand-alone nonsense that failed. I just thought I remembered Google talking about being directly inside TVs last year and was expecting them to have made this happen in 2011 or well on their way for 2012.

Still looks like they are piecing things together and building partnerships, but it's gaining momentum if that message from Captain Schmidt is to be trusted.

logitech screwed themselves by pricing it the way they did. It's convenient to blame Google but when you think its a good idea to bring something to the market at the price they did where every competitor is under $100, then you are an idiot and Logitech deserved it

Yup, there's no way I would have paid $300 for the Revue, I picked up on a whim because it was $80.

Google TV 2.0 came out last year, but it still has the main problems that it always had: lack of content and support from entertainment providers. It's still basically a Netflix, Amazon, and Youtube front end with a browser, some apps, and an amazingly complex remote.

Hulu, NBC, and others still block it from accessing their content. The DVR functionality is limited to Dish subscribers (for $4 extra a month, wtf?). I don't know who will "crack" the TV market but it desperately needs some change.

I hate this fucking controller, i hate how Sony made the box look beautiful but thought a dualshock with tiny fucking keys would be the best way to interface with the TV.

Nothing at CES will get me excited, i expect a megaton of trashy android Tablet TV Garbage.

How is that anything like a DualShock controller?

But seriously. How do you design a controller for google tv? The only thing I can think of is having a 'normal' tv remote and then a Google TV Remote App available on all mobile platforms.

BlueTsunami

there is joy in sucking dick
I see those smart TV controller designs and all I can think about are the chunky and ugly MP3 players before the iPod and the odd looking smartphones before the iPhone. Should be interesting to see if Apple really does have an elegant approach to this.

Computers in your glasses! I always imagined these existing as a kid, though that was more for the ability to cheat on tests with these things.

Just make a wiimote knockoff. Using a tiny-ass keyboard is way shitter than just pointing at the screen.

God that remote looks so good. Haven't ever used one, but it makes sense to me.

AppleTV's "Remote" app you can download for the iPad or iPhone are another awesome solution. Touchscreen acts as a virtual trackpad and for text entry you can just use the standard iOS keyboard...and it intelligently only presents this when there is actual text entry. Neato.

That looks terrible. I'll keep my XBMC + iPad remote app, thanks.
Check out the video.

Does it look as good as XBMC or it's forks? Well no, but what does? Granted we don't know if it's possible to support/hack things like fan art, etc. ... but obviously the default isn't going to have huge full screen assets. What is there though has a decent layout and seems to move fluidly enough.

The point here though is what it can do that XBMC can't ... and the direction this is moving the market. I doubt this revision will be ready to replace dedicated streamers, but it's a nice step.

It's nothing new, that's google tv 2.0, they just made a couple of widgets.
The interface looks like it's been updated a bit more than that :p as has performance

While that may be true, it's convenient to not include Google in the blame as well. GoogleTV was typical Google Beta material - if that. I think quite obviously, the companies involved were led to believe it would be much further along than it was.

*looks at Boxee ... Popcorn Hour ... Dune ... etc.*

That's how LG does it. Their magic remote combined a 3D mouse and voice control. The new version will also add QWERTY
And how well does it work? Any videos? Companies can tout voice recognition all they want but execution is key. It needs natural language processing and contextual awareness.

I've built so many media centers in the last year, even used PS3 or 360 as one as well. I always, always come back to XBMC .. it really is the defacto media center, tried and true and so very awesome/beautiful. All of these new Roku/GoogleTV/AppleTV shit is just terrible. The interfaces all look like absolute shit.

For me the only thing that matters going forward is probably the Xbox 720 or PS4. How we are their media center features going to be integrated. Make or break it guys.. if not, I'm sticking with what I have and what works.

Don't know.

I'd be surprised if it's natural language based, but I'm not quite sure that's needed for this usage. Either way, I'd have to look into it.

Given this sort of things is very web-centric, I suppose they could do natural language if they wanted too.

The problem is XBMC fails for streaming services.

Google TV is also attempting to do things that nothing else does (well TiVo) ... but it will take a while to get it hammered out.

I switched to XBMC few weeks ago, mainly because I found an awesome remote app for the iPad (XBMC Commander) and because I was sick of MyMovies for the Windows Media Center. I should've done it earlier.
