What frame rates were people getting at that spot at the top of White Run before hand? 580's with 2600k's@4.4 or something in that neighborhood. I'm trying to hold out on mods till this Steam community thing comes out, but I might break down and add Skyboost tomorrow night.

34fps. Now its 60+.

It broke down to 44 fps for me, from a constant 60, and there isn't any difference with Skyboost for me, maybe I installed it wrong but I don't think so.

2500k (4.2 Ghz), 6950, 8GB RAM.

Usually it's pretty stable though, although I haven't encountered any hectic fights yet.

I kind of think I should be getting higher fps. I have installed Skyboost and at the top of Dragonreach looking down on Whiterun my fps are 40-42 whereas before it was in the 30s. A definite increase in performance, but I am seeing people getting much higher than that.

I am on an i7 950 @ 3.8ghz and dual GTX 580's. Anyone with similar specs have better frames there?

I am not using ENB, just the old FXAA injector (no performance hit), and a ton of different mods. I am not sure which one would be effecting my performance in Whiterun, though. I have 2K textures installed, HD serious textures, realistic smoke and embers, the one for barrels and clutter, lush grass/trees. I don't want to uninstall everything just to test what is causing my fps to be lower than it probably should.

I doubt any of those mods are causing a drop in FPS anyway, they all seem like GPU stress increasing mods, and with dual 580's that obviously won't be a problem. If it's feasible to get your CPU up to 4GHz you'd probably get a reasonable FPS boost from that.

What's the best solution for SSAO at the moment?

Also, wouldn't running the 2K texture mod and the Serious Texture one be slight overkill? I would think they'd cancel each other out.

I know I was using the 2K texture mod and the Tobes Highres mod and just choosing the 2K texture mod of those two gave me an FPS boost, so you could try using just one of those and see what happens.

Well I used the Serious HD Textures before ever downloading the 2K. The 2K seemed more all-inclusive, so I uninstalled Serious and put 2K on instead. Then I installed Serious HD again but didn't overwrite anything so I'd have the textures from it that 2K didn't touch. Same with Tobres' textures.

Lies! I'm quite happy with it turned on via nVidia Inspector and set to performance. Looks good and performance is mint.

But...new problem! I've noticed that turning on transparent multisampling makes certain textures in the game transparent. Trolls and Khajiit are two good examples. Their entire bodies are noticeably transparent. At first I thought the SSAO might be causing it, but nope, it's the transparent multisampling.

I have my settings exactly as they are in the op, but I'm still getting the problem. What do?

I've set transparency anti aliasing as 2x SSAA - this gets rid of the transparent textures/model problem you're having.

Performance is fine but the shimmering on the AO it adds to smaller objects in the distance (e.g. clumps of grass) is very distracting to my eyes. Changing it to Quality improves this, but kills my framerate. It's still too shimmery though. If I could get 60fps with SSAO on Quality, I'd still choose to leave it off.

Are you on 290.53? The shimmering was really really bad on the previous versions, but they improved the performance level SSAO on the newest drivers, it only just barely shimmers. I can see how even that would be distracting still, even if you already are on 290.53, but just checking!

I'm running a GTX460 768mb with a Phenom X4 3.2Ghz and was getting some pretty bad stutter on Ultra w 8xAA. So i installed Skyboost and brought shadows down to High as I'd seen suggested somewhere and the game is running ridiculously smooth now.

So is there any disadvantage to using Skyboost?

I'm using an i5 2500 and a 6870.

I get 60fps almost everywhere on high, but it stutters and I get drops to the 40s in whiterun.

Edit: That's for pre-skyboost

SkyBoost is mostly bug free. Or at least no bug has yet been directly and reliably attributed to using it.

I'm wondering if there is anyway of getting around the increased load times when using a fps limiter? Currently the game stutters quite a bit when panning around with a controller on my pc as the framerate jumps around 58-60 and possibly above the v-sync cap causing a very jarring experience, and ive find that capping the game at any number less than 60 removes this problem. But as said this for whatever reason increases my load times when entering buildings and cities exponentially.

//Also if anyone knows a good way of fixing this stuttering without capping the framerate I'm all ears.

Seems to be the only thing I can do, which is a shame, as even though SSAA is supposed to be better I actually think the MSAA effect cleans up grass and trees much nicer, even moreso than 8xTSSAA. Check em.

EDIT: Actually, I like TMSAA on the grass, but 8xTSSAA on the trees. Blah. Also, someone fucking mod shadow casting on grass in, because the game desperately needs it.

Shadows need a complete overhaul and I really hope it's the first thing out of the game when the CK launches.

Is there anything that can improve the shadows? It looks so terrible, even with settings set at high.

Lately I've been getting constant CTD's like crazy. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but does anyone know any sort of solutions to CTD's when you go fast travel from one town to another?

For those of us who can't run shadows on ultra, I think increasing the iBlurDeferredShadowMask setting is the best way to go. I am currently using medium shadows with iBlur setting of 6.

I don't feel like there's any performance hit to increasing the setting, so blurring out the horrendous shit they call shadows goes a long way in my eyes. Going higher than 6 might even be better but tbh I haven't fooled around with it much because I've been so sucked in to the game.

Yes. I posted it earlier in this thread. It's the 'Purgeunused' setting, you should be able to search for my post.

So, after being sick of screen tearing and shuttering frames, and thinking that playing with medium settings on a 720 or 900 resolution even with skyboost was the answer. I got fraps and wanted to see what sort of FPS I was getting. Huh, 50-90 fps. So I went and educated myself on how vsync works, what triple buffering actually does, and what my monitor's refresh rate has anything to do with it.

So to remove stuttering and tearing, or any annoying frame consistency I said "screw it", and capped my framerate to 30 FPS with vsync and triple buffering on.

Then I said "Well, if I'm going to do that big of a framerate cap, lets see how much I can push this baby until it dips below 30."

So I set it on ultra, max detail, max distance, max resolution, max headroom, max everything.

And it doesn't go under 30 fps at all.

Oh god, it runs so beautiful and solidly. It's like the future. ;_;

For some reason the game is running really shittily for me, even with the SkyBoost and ATi card mods. I'm talking sub 30FPS everywhere on this system:

Intel Core i5 2500k
ATi Radeon HD5850
8GB DDR3 RAM

Any ideas?

And this is just recent, it was fine a few weeks ago, but I got back into it this week and it's like this.

I realized I put this in the wrong thread with the mod talk:
Anyone experience a dramatic dip in performance after playing for more than an hour or so? It isn't a graudual degradation either, but suddenly drops to a point where I can't maintain 60fps when I lower the resolution to 1280x720, dipping into the 30-40s when I look at light sources. The only way I've found to restore performance is to restart my computer.
I usually have shadows set to medium when normally running at 1920x1080, but put shadows and everything else to low when the performance goes to shit and I change to 1280x720
Anyone had this problem or know what's up?
Specs: GTX 260, i7 970, 6GB RAM

For me its the opposite, the more I play the more stable the framerate becomes (starts at 39-ish and when 30 minutes have passed I have a steady 50-55fps outdoors, and solid 60fps in dungeons).

Update on this. My save file is 4041KB, and I tried starting a new character. Still the same low FPS in the intro sequence, and I get 17FPS when I look the direction the cart is going.

Maybe try a re-install? I get nearly 60fps everywhere (except Tree of Doom, Markath etc..) with i5 @ 3.6, 5850 and 8gb with Skyboost (not sure of ATi card mods). High on everything with 4096 for shadow res.

Don't know if there's any performance gain from working drivers but 12.1 have been the best thus far.

This barely did anything. It's not too much different. Got a few FPS higher sometimes, but not much (like less than 5). Even at Nightgate Inn I get 30 or less, all the time.

I've tried this twice now, and nothing.

What's your SB CPU OC? I just hit 4.8ghz today. Hitting 4.3-4.5 should not be an issue. You will see some significant gains if you're running on stock 3.3-3.8ghz turbo boost.

As for the driver, did you happen to do a clean driver sweep in safe mode? Something to consider.

I will tell you this, when I benchmarked, going from 3.3 to 4.5 got me the same boost I'm seeing from Skyboost (post CPUD OC). So I'm talking about 10-30fps depending on where I'm looking. That's not chump change.

I haven't overclocked at all, so running at the stock speed of 3.3 GHz. I'm about to try the driver sweep in safe mode. I tried what I have now with Skyboost and the AMD/ATi card fix and still got nothing.

Edit: DERP: Attention - Guru3D Driver Sweeper has been discontinued as such you will not find any download links here any longer.

Any alternatives to it?

Stock cooling? I would push it to 4ghz and monitor temps. This is a more broad fix but it's very well worth it.

Google driver sweeper, it's maintained/hosted elsewhere.

I noticed an improvement from 12.1, that's for sure. Aren't the 11.12 drivers the worst of the bunch at this point too? Like 11.12 doesn't even include the performance additions that game with 11.11c afaik.

I researched it and never added 11.12 to my recommended driver in the OP. It was 1.11c until the CAT 12.1 preview hit.
