You mean you aren't going to be at the mall for 16 hours straight on Black Friday?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no. Though, with the weather in eastern Washington in November, it might take me 16 hours to drive to Pullman from Portland!

I know it's because no one watched the game, but I just noticed that Dennis Haysbert was behind the ref on the coin toss. All state being a major sponsor and all, but he didn't do anything except stand there.

Still the best President of the United States, of all times, Folk.

First tragedy, then farce.

So the Liberty Bowl had a 36% ratings drop versus last year. Last year's game was a defensive game with a 10-6 final and it was on ESPN. This one was on ABC and still dropped in ratings. Suck it down, SEC for kicking out CUSA!

Sounds like a 'family decision'. He's got pro talent tbh but he needed another year. Oregon needs to boost it's WR core more than anything. I think we look more like Masoli teams next year. Vertical passing and a slightly more versatile running game. Bennett is the best athlete we've ever had at QB.

He's a slightly more talented Dennis Dixon. Thomas is worse at running the zone read, but a better thrower than Dixon. He also doesn't force a lot and actually made a surpassing amount of puzzling 'NFL throws' in our offense this year.

I think Bennett actually had something to do with it. The offense ran so well with him that there was a pseudo-QB controversy when Thomas got benched in favor of Bennett against ASU.

He did look remarkably sharp in the Rose Bowl.

Blah.

Bennett is good but Thomas is a lot more exciting to watch imo. He just seems to have more energy and looks as though he's putting a ton of effort into every play. I'm sure Bennett will develop into a great player too though.

Chip didn't seem too pleased.

“As in all cases, we educate our players with the information we feel will be beneficial to them throughout the process but ultimately, the decision is left up to the players,” Kelly said. “I will always support Darron in his decision and want to thank him for everything he has done for this program. He obviously has played a major role in elevating Oregon football to new heights and I wish him well in the future.”

Sounds like they told him not to try for the NFL but he did it anyway. Very interesting. Well, for his sake maybe he'll go as a free agent?

Anyone feel like JoePa is gonna die right as the Penn STate season starts?

If there is any karma out there he will have to stay alive, stuck in a bed and watch the short term downfall of the program. With as much pain as possible and also lose his voice so that he is unable to call out for help.

Thomas went 25-3 as an unheralded starter with a 66-17 TD/INT ratio to go along with it. In his first season, he led Oregon their national championship game, and then their first Rose Bowl win in 95 years in his second. Next year, Bryan Bennett would've pushed him for the starting job despite all of this and you have to wonder in the system; how much his stock would've improved (if he kept his job).

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. There would've been an awkward situation at QB (Matt Sarazen anyone?), and considering what he's achieved, I understand his reasoning to move forward. He's a class kid all the way so I hope he catches on somewhere.

I got into an unexpected argument on Facebook with a former college acquaintance over Joe Paterno and the PSU alumni's staunch defense of him. She did her undergrad at OSU, but went to Penn State for law school.

It was cordial, but a bit heated. She said that I didn't understand the situation, having not gone to Penn State. I said that Penn State students and alumni seem to have lost all perspective and don't realize that the entire university's reputation is at stake, not just the reputation of Joe Paterno. She said I was basing my condemnation of Paterno on absolutely nothing; I countered by saying that my opinion is based entirely on the grand jury report and Paterno's own words. I added that if Jim Tressel deserved to get fired for his indiscretions (and he most certainly did), then Paterno sure as hell deserved to get fired for his.

I really don't understand the mentality at Penn State. They're so hopelessly myopic. What really gets me is that the trustees actually did the football program a favor by cleaning house. They've based their recruiting on the Paterno mythos for so long that they don't realize that he's tainted, and recruits are no longer going to want anything to do with him.

I would like to say most people who went to Penn State aren't crazy, but that would be a lie.

I don't think they realize how much damage they are doing to their university as a whole. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if some employers auto-ding Penn State students now, on the basis of their actions during the whole scandal.

No one wants to work with people who are going to be delusional about this topic.

Here is the cover of the latest alumni mag.

I mean, like I've stated before, as someone who spent my childhood there, it sucked watching JoePa and the program go down like this. But it had to happen, and even more.

Probably not so much inside Pennsylvania, but there could be some of that outside of the state. I wouldn't think to any huge degree, though.

That said, someone in the Penn State community needs to step up and tell these people to shut the fuck up. Sadly, nobody seems willing to do it, probably because they'd be tarred and feathered for it.

Hearing that the ruling on UNC will be announced Tuesday and rumor has it that the NCAA has accepted the self-imposed penalties and won't add anything to them. If true, get ready to get the popcorn out and see the meltdown from NC State (and to a lesser extent, OSU) fans.

edit: a refresher on the penalties we self-imposed:

UNC will vacate its 16 total wins from the 2008 and ’09 seasons, reduce its scholarship total by three in each of the next three academic years, impose two years of probation and pay a $50,000 fine.

There is a term for this in psychology. It's called "irrational primality", and is closely tied to confirmation bias. The idea is that people tend to trust evidence they learned earlier over newer evidence that contradicts it. For people who have grown up being told how great Paterno is over and over, it is difficult to process evidence that shatters that image.

I seem to remember the same rumor swirling about tOSU just before their sanctions were announced. How'd that work out?

So, CUSA and MWC are talking about dissolving as leagues then reforming under a new one in order to get a jump on other conferences renegotiating conferences.

Some positives of that are that the departing CUSA/MWC members can get out ASAP and go to the Big East while probably not paying any exit fees. It could also facilitate WVU getting out of the BE ASAP too and avoiding more litigation.

I don't see the rush, though, for the remaining CUSA/MWC. That league minus Boise, Houston, UCF and SMU isn't really going to take away from any other league that hasn't negotiated yet. Notably the Big East as they have to wait until September to begin closed negotiations with ESPN, then a month or so after to start open market negotiations.

I'd be shocked if Thomas got drafted at all.

Strange to say about a quarterback who lead the team to a National Championship game and Rose Bowl win. When you watch him play, he's not making any down field throws. He's an excellent option-read QB, but he's never made a big impression as a NFL caliber QB.

It's not really the system. Thomas was recruited as an athlete by LSU, and the only reason he choose Oregon was because they offered him a chance to play QB.

Wish him well. I'm not too distraught over it. I think more talented QBs are on the depth chart anyways.

gee I wonder why the SEC likes the BCS setup so much

After many years of questionable tournament snubs in basketball, I'd feel there be more room for corruption than there is now. But then again, if there's only 4-8 teams, I don't see how they could screw that up.

Yeah, a huge playoff would be nice for more games, but provided the bowls don't change then that's unnecessary anyway. 4-8 or less teams would be great.

But I don't know if I'd prefer an entirely hand-selected four teams or the top four BCS rated teams. I'd probably go with the latter, if only because I don't trust committees to give us the best games, just to try to earn the most money. See the Sugar Bowl.

Hey, there's a YouTube video of a passed out drunk LSU fan at a Krystal's after the championship. Guess what happens to him!

Man, I dunno about that. Dixon was a hell of a QB. If not for that injury, I don't think you'd be writing this sentence.

Well I'm measuring that as 'NFL talent'. Maybe I should retract though. Not sure if you remember but Brady Leaf was his backup and the week after Dixon got injured, we lost 16-0 to UCLA. With Dixon we were one of the top 5 offenses in the nation, without him; we couldn't muster a point.

Dixon played incredible in that 2007 season. His accuracy was off the charts, his deep ball was insane, and he was playing with backups across the board (Jeff Maehl was converted from DB as a freshman that season because we were out of healthy WRs).

Still, I like Thomas in the pocket. He's got pretty good sense and is very good when things break down. Dixon benefited a little from it being Oregon's first year with the scheme, I thought. Defenses were surprised/confused by it that year. I really like what I saw in the Rose Bowl; and he throws post-corner routes EXTREMELY well.

Rosenhaus is agent btw.

Bennett is a scary-good athlete. His backup Marcus Mariotta almost pushed him last year.

This article puts it together well.

Could be good, could be meh.

Maybe Alabama will pass downfield a bit more. 2nd year QB, young WR talent, sting offensive line.

You guys definitely will, assuming McCarron has the arm for it. And assuming Saban doesn't threaten to flay Nuss alive for throwing more than 10 times per game.

I think he's got the arm for it. He's not a Ryan Mallett, but he's probably Alabama's best QB in a decade or 2.

Hope Alabama keeps the 2 TE setup, with all the motion. Really confused opposing defenses.

From what I've seen, McCarron is a passing QB at heart but is fitting himself into Saban's system. I don't think Saban would have gone after Nussmeier if he wasn't open to picking up the passing game a bit.
