PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Question regarding the Go.

I picked one up yesterday (got it for $84) and I upgraded it to 6.60. Is there anyway to downgrade it to 6.20 so I can perma patch it.

If I can't, it doesn't bother me, but the option to do so would be nice.

For the longest time, I stuck with the 2000 and the GEN firmwares, so anything past that is new to me.

Hi there,

I have a memory stick related question : I want to buy a 8Gb one, and my choice at the moment is this : http://www.play.com/Electronics/Ele.../SanDisk-8GB-Memory-Stick-Gaming/Product.html

However I already bought once a Sandisk 4Gb MSDuo which was I think of inferior quality compared to Sony's (MGS PW was freezing with the Sandisk but working just fine with the Sony), so my question is : does anybody have this MSDuo in particular ? Does it work well with you ? Did you try MGS PW on it ?

Thanks.

I've never had an issue with an Sandisk memory card I've ever used for any device (not just the PSP).

Where did you get the 4GB card in question? There's always the chance it could be a fake.

As for a new card, what I would recommend is either

A) A 16GB Memory Stick M2. Those are the cards that the Go uses, however they have adapters to make them fit in Pro Duo devices. A 16GB M2 can be picked up for $20 on Amazon.

B) A Pro Duo adapter for Micro SD cards. I used one of these with my PSP 2000 and I never had a problem with it.

Another question regarding the Go. What's the best SNES emulator to use on it. I've got Euphoria R5 b3 on mine, but I'm getting a shit load of graphical errors (Link's shield in Alttp for example looks like its strapped on his back and he has no feet).

I have a question, I want to update my PSP-3000 and am planning on going the very easy 6.60PRO-B10 route, but what do I do afterwards? Where can I find compatible programs/emulators/whatever for the type of CFW I am running? I google'd, but I get very different programs/things. Any help I could get would be awesome!

I just put 6.60 on my Go. A lot of the newer builds of the emulators have been signed since the PSP keys were found last year during the PS3 hack. Since they're signed, you don't need to run the CFW app to run them.

gpsp-j-110507 is a signed Gameboy Advance emulator

nesterj-1-13 is a signed NES emulator

Masterboy-2-02-signed-emulator is a signed Gameboy Color\Master System emulator

Picodrive is a Genesis\Sega CD emulator, look for version 1.51 signed.

The SNES emulator is a major issue right now.

Snes9x Euphoria R5 Beta 3 is the latest build of Snes9x for the PSP. Its signed, but there's some major graphical issues with games.

SNES9X v0.02y32 is the older emulator, it functions, but its really shows its age.

Hey guys, gotta question....

Is there a utility for modded PSPs that allows me to play music over a game that I play...kinda like the way Xbox 360 does custom soundtracks? If so, can I mix it over the game's sound, and adjust the volume individually from the games sound? Please let me know.

Anyone want to take a whack at a new OP for this thread? The PSP is, for all intents and purposes, done, and it'd be possible to rewrite the entire OP to be much more concise and clear out the thread, which has 4 years of baggage in it.

Basically what we need is:
- How to put Custom Firmware on your PSP (http://wololo.net/wagic/cfw4dummies/ already has everything we need). This is so easy it's not even funny. In fact, linking to this guide would be more than sufficient.

- Common Custom Firmware plugins (I would recommend at least a screenshot plugin, RemoteJoy Lite, and maybe a cheating option?).

- Where to find homebrew, and where to put it to run it (/PSP/Game/). Maybe links to major pieces of homebrew, including the emulators listed on this page... and also probably include the alternate web browser options.

- How to rip your own PS1 games (Not sure what tools are in use now).

- Transferring UMDs to play on a Go (Install a UMD ripper on a pre-Go PSP, rip there, move to CFW Go).

I think that guide still leaves some items a bit unclear. For my case, I have a PSP-1000 (Phat) with cfw 5.50 GEN-D3 and I'm looking to update but the guide doesn't mention if it is applicable to only OFW versions less than 6.60. Do I need to unistall my CFW, does updating to OFW 6.60 automatically do that, etc.? And then there is the question of 6.20 vs 6.60, which is preferred? I think Chaos posted a couple of helpful links a few pages back that are very thorough:

I'm now in the process of updating my two PSPs, I will start drafting up a new guide, if anyone wants to contribute certain sections let me know.

In order:

-Update to at least 6.20 put 6.20-TN-D in /PSP/GAME. Boot PSP. Game->Memory Stick->TN-D booter->???->PROFIT!

-CWCheat and uh... um... I don't use RemoteJoyLite nor the screenshot plugin. Someone can link those.

-Wololo or whatever has a general list of them along with his Magic/Wagic solo project. But he (last I checked) had a kid so he hasn't been updating as often.

-Making a .iso should be easy to Google. Gist is: Get an .iso tool and make a .iso. Then get "ZingaBurga's POPstation GUI" (unless a new thing is out there?) and custom eboot images (but the go-to site for that has long been dead) and make your Eboot.pbp's with that simple and easy.

-Install CFW->XMB menu that is there when you hold select->USB Mode: UMD->Grab .iso file there->Put on CFW PSPGo under "/PSP/ISO"->Run game. PROFIT!

You can copy-paste this as a new OP, Stump, I guess.

PSP Custom Firmware Guide - Updating to 6.20 PRO or 6.60 PRO CFW

Chances are that if you are here you are probably in one of the two following categories:

- (New?) PSP user looking to venture into the world of custom firmware (CFW)

- Existing CFW user looking to update their PSP but have been out of the loop so long that they aren't sure where to start

First thing you will have to decide is if you would rather upgrade to 6.20 PRO or 6.60 PRO. Main difference is that 6.20 PRO is a permanent installation, meaning that it will boot into custom firmware every time you reboot. 6.60 PRO is temporary, which will require you to run a program called the Fast Recovery Tool whenever you want to access CFW. Most people opt for 6.60, since running Fast Recovery Tool only takes about 5 seconds, and you will remain in CFW even if you place the PSP in sleep mode, which is what most people use anyway.

If you want to read a little more about the pros and cons check out this thread. Some small things to note, it appears that there is more support for plugins and CTF themes (customized themes for your PSP XMB) on 6.20 but most still prefer 6.60 since you have the latest official firmware and can access PSN. If you're still not sure what to choose, I would recommend going with 6.60 PRO.

So let's get started...

UPGRADING YOUR PSP ON OFFICIAL FIRMWARE TO 6.60 PRO

Follow Wololo's guide: PSP Custom Firmware for dummies

Very straight forward, if you need more help determining your type of PSP, check the first section of this guide, which includes pictures of the different PSP models. Everything else from the guide is pretty self explanatory.

UPGRADING YOUR CFW PSP TO 6.20 PRO (PERMANENT) or 6.60 PRO (TEMPORARY)

If you are on custom firmware, you will need to flash/install a clean original official firmware before upgrading using a program called Hellcat's Recovery Flasher along with OFW 5.00 to flash to, then you will be able continue with the upgrade. This is all detailed at How To Softmod (Hack) Your PSP. (Video tutorial on Youtube)

From here you can continue on in the same tutorial to install either 6.20 PRO or 6.60 PRO or if you prefer you can use wololo's guide to install 6.60 PRO.

Not much else to it, since the early days of PSP CFW the process has been very streamlined and user friendly. If you are intimidated, don't hesitate to ask questions, just make sure you've read through the guides. The people here at GAF are very helpful, and have helped me more times than I can recall. Good luck!

GBAtemp.net's general modding FAQ
--------

This is my shot at the first section of the guide, please let me know if you have any comments or see any errors. I'll start adding additional sections as I have time but wanted to get this first section out there for review since it is what I see the most questions coming up on (including ones that I had).

Also thinking about saying some things about 6.60 ME but wanted to get the thoughts of others.

Since I upgraded from 1000 to a 3000 (I plan to install a 6.20 permanent CFW) and have been a little away from the community, I have some questions :
1°) Do the homebrew uses the supplementary RAM in the console ?
2°) Is there homebrew that use the TV output ?
3°) How's N64 emulation now ?
4°) Are there games that actually do not run with CFW ? (I remember when you had to patch your CFW in order to play PW and KH:BBS, and you couldn't even play it on disc...)
Thanks !

Are there any differences between all of the version above 6.20? Like, does 6.35 have more functionality than 6.60 or does it not really matter at this point?

I currently have 5.50 Prometheus. Where do I go from here?

Thanks both to Mejilan who added some basics into the OP and everyone who has replied. I will see about cobbling together everyone's input into a new thread (I think in general it'd be useful to have a new thread with no baggage, nice and clean)

With the "temporary" version of CFW can you load ps1 and psp isos from the memory stick? I haven't paid attention in months and months but I know initially when I got my PSP Go you could do some custom firmware but I remember it not being able to book isos from the stick or something.

Yes.

I'm running 6.60 Pro on my Go and I can play all of my backups and PS1 games just fine.

The only issue I've had is the SNES emulator. The only two that work are Euphoria R5 beta 3 and an older version of SNES9x from 2008. One (Euphoria) has a ton of graphical issues and the version from 2008 is slow.

Sweet, thanks. I just remember when I first got my Go only one of them worked I forget if it was PS1 rips or Isos of Psp games that would boot and the other wouldn't. I think it was PS1 but I guess they finally got both to run with is awesome then. Can't wait to update. :D

Temp CFW can do most anything perm CFW can do now. It just doesn't have "kernal mode" which is an issue for some applications but people have gotten around it.

CFW is easier than ever to get.

I'm running 6.20 Bro B9 on my PSP Go. It's a permanent dealie that automatically goes into CFW. There's no way I can access PSN without changing the firmware right? Because I'd rather not bother.

Nice, I was hoping it would reach that (and seemed it would) but I just wanted to make sure. I never had a huge reason with my other psp-2000 having custom, my just made my Go my PSN console at the time.

Hi guys,

My bro has an old PSP PHAT, with M-33 custom firmware 5.00 or something.

He recently bought a used copy of Final Fantasy IV complete collection and it wants him to install 6.37 (on the UMD) to play it.

Is there any way he can skip the update and just play the game without updating so he can keep M-33 5.00 CFW?

Thank you,

Thank you,

M33 5.00 is horribly outdated.

I'd recommend either

A) Upgrading to 5.50 Promethius Gen D3 and ripping the game to an .iso (hit select and change the USB reader to the UMD drive, plug in the PSP and turn on the USB, you have an instant .iso of the game. Then just drag and drop and place the game's iso in the ISO folder.

B) Upgrade to 6.20 Pro and use the permanent patch, and do the same for the .iso.

If you go to 6.60 pro, does that prevent you from ripping games or anything like that instead of the 6.20 pro? I'm still at 5.50 prometheus but I had to redownload some of my PSN games and they won't run now which is annoying.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC outside of permanent patch and a few other things maybe (?), 6.60 PRO offers pretty much the same thing than 6.20 PRO. Isn't there a permanent patch for 6.60 PRO ?

So I just dug up my PSP Go that has a signed 6.20 TN-C homebrew enabler, is there any reason to upgrade further at this point? I've been out of the loop on this for a while.

I see Pro CFW in the OP has been released and I'm not sure I want to flash my PSP unless that will get me onto PSN...

edit: went ahead and upgraded, damn that was easy

Hopefully someone can answer this for me.

I have a PSP-1000. Having bought content across two different PSN accounts, I would like to use the content on the PSP without having to keep authenticating the PSP back and forth between the two accounts. (The content is exclusively PS1 classics, if that's important. Trying to access it without the CFW active just gives "This content can not be accessed by this account")

I was hoping 6.60 PRO would do this. Apparently it doesn't? I just get a generic "Game could not be started (80021048)" message when I try to activate software bought from whatever the non-"active" account is. I will get the warning regarding a "Well Lit Room" and then the thing generates that error. This thing is supposedly using the NODRM thing, right? Is that something I have to add or change or something?

Is there a way to solve this? I've been unable to find anything on this via Google, so I figured I'd ask here.

It's a bit of a clunky solution, but...

1. Authenticate the account you DON'T want to use.
2. Download "NP Decryptor", and follow the instructions to convert every game under that account into a DRM-free ISO.
3. Delete the EBOOT files, keep the ISOs.
4. Authenticate for the other account.

It will require a small investment of time, but you'll only have to do it once.

Thanks for the quick reply! Alright, I'll do this, but I have a quick question first.

I thought, at least in the past, that NP Decryptor won't work on legit PS1 Classics?

I borrowed my friends PSP with cfw.

It says its version 5.00 M33-4. Is there a way to update it without a PC? All I have is an android tablet. I just want to be able to play retail umds without screwing up the cfw (I'm assuming I can't play umds with the current version I have?).

Not really sure but I wouldn't have the proper cable anyway.

I will have access to a PC tomorrow. All I really want to do is play retail umds without wrecking the cfw.

Just updated a co-worker's PSP (well, one I sold him a few years ago), to 6.60 Pro from 5.50M33. Although having CFW's pointless for him since he wouldn't know how to use it, but it's renewed his interest in PSP games, and he bought quite a few yesterday! Now he wants to rip a bunch of his DVDs. Is it possible for PSP to play 480p MP4s now, or is it still 480x272 or lower, and only Sony has that capability?

pretty sure it's still 480x272. I made a custom preset in Handbrake with a good quality to file size ratio.
But for whatever reason I still need to use Handbrake 0.9.4 - even with the same settings files I encode with 0.9.5 refuse to play on the PSP.

I think I goofed. I decided to update my cfw because I hadn't done so in a long, long time. I got back to ofw then updated to the latest one and followed this. The problem is when I turn my PSP off and try to turn it back on I just get a black screen. The only way I can get my PSP to work is if I take the battery out, plug in the AC charger, boot the PSP up, and then switch to my battery. If I turn my PSP off again I have to repeat all of this. Any idea what I've broken? :(

Are you using a Pandora Battery? Because exactly this happens if you're using Pandora with OFW and there's no proper IPL file on the memory card.

Try to use one of the apps in that package to inject a custom IPL to the memory card and check if that helps anyway.

Hello,

I need some help. I want to upgrade to 6.60 CFW but to do so I'm going to have to downgrade my CFW from Prometheus 3v4, because it thinks my firmware is at 9.90 (!). Can anyone advise the best method to downgrade from Prometheus?

I hate to sound dumb but I'm fairly clueless on these things. Would I do that by running the CIPL Flasher?

If there's an app with "ipl" in it's name, run it and follow the instructions. Can't really help you any better, because I've sold my PSP, sorry.

You've got a 1k PSP, so just get a Pandora and magic memory stick from someone and it'll be saved in no time.
