Nintendo Downloads - January 2012

I feel as though I should reiterate: Lock n' Chase is great. Really. Played it for two hours today. Just as fun as I remember. It gets shit for being a Pac-Man ripoff, but it's actually quite clever. It's a fun puzzle/arcade game and well worth the cash.

Does it actually make it interesting?
Few questions.
I'm running out of space on my SD card, is there a way to easily transfer all my games over to a larger card or am I going to have to redownload everything when I get a new card.
Also is 32 gig the largest SD card the 3DS can do like the Wii or can they do bigger?

Just copy it all to a new card.

SDHC cards, by spec, only go up to 32GB.

Don't forget to make sure your SD card is a Class 10 for best performance.
... again, I'm not sure that's true -- class 10 cards could even be significantly slower for performance on the 3DS.

Class 6 and up are faster for large file transfers (photos, video recording, etc) but tend to be slower for smaller files and random access. Class 4 cards can trump 10 when it comes to application use.

Sadly, random access and small file access info generally isn't available without personal testing via programs like Crystal Disk Mark.

"Class 10" cards will certainly be faster for transferring large files -- but for application use, that may not be the case.

Enjoy a prominent nintendo downloads week, NA.

Funny you mention the price as an issue, as this mentality was exactly the thing Renegade Kid's creator argued about in a recent blog posting.

I for one think its an bad idea to charge more than Nintendo is for games like Pushmo or Sakura Samurai. Even if the game is probably worth the price, i just think in the long run they would make more money if they would aim +- 5 bucks than +- 10 bucks. Especially since they probably wont have any chance to lower the price in the future... but i`m still hoping for sales.

I bought Zen Pinball. Pushmo, Mighty Switch Force and Freakyforms and didnt pay more than 6€ for any of those titles - lets see how much Mutant Mudds will be here.

Here's the Crystal Disk Mark report for the Toshiba SD card bundled with the 3DS:

Code:

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 x64 (C) 2007-2010 hiyohiyo
                           Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/

* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s]

           Sequential Read : 16.383 MB/s
          Sequential Write : 10.338 MB/s
         Random Read 512KB : 16.275 MB/s
        Random Write 512KB : 1.953 MB/s
    Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 2.788 MB/s [ 680.6 IOPS]
   Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.017 MB/s [ 4.2 IOPS]
   Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 3.395 MB/s [ 828.9 IOPS]
  Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.018 MB/s [ 4.4 IOPS]

Doing some google searches, this seems to be class 2. I've looked some charts and indeed most class 4, 6 and 10 cards are roughly the same in the random write/reads departments, unless you buy the more expensive ones designed for professional cameras.

I think the current retail prices also have a huge impact on how Nintendo eShop prices are perceived. When Ghost Trick, Sky Crawlers, or even Last Window cost all less than €10 (or in these cases less than €5), then I feel that some eShop titles are overpriced.

True, and its already happening with 3DS retail software where you can get some of the launch titles ( e.g SF4) or even holiday bombas like shinobi for under 15€. They offer more content and after finishing them you still can resell them.

I dont expect or need iOS prices, but 5-6€ would be the sweet spot for most experiences digital.

I don't think it's fair to compare prices of previous hardware games that came out a year ago with download games that came out a month ago.
Yeah, there's a case to be made for Nintendo's downloadable games never dropping in price but when those games launched they cost a hell of a lot more than your standard eShop game and have had a year to slowly drop in price.

I'm not just referring to eShop, also to DSiWare/WiiWare. It's just a bit cumbersome to mention all Nintendo DD shops each time.
And then again, there are titles that drop in price very quickly. Rayman Origins, WarioWare DIY, or even Street Fighter IV 3DS - just to mention a few examples. With those being just a few Euros more than a downloadable title, which often have much less content, makes me a little baffled.

Could you lead me to Ghost Trick for 10 €?

Still not a fair comparison.

Switch Force needed more depth in the levels. Make it more like Metroid and less of a straight puzzler.
The concept was amazing, though.

I couldn't disagree more. I think they were amazingly successful in what they set out to do. It obviously wasn't meant to be a Metroidvania. What I feel the game could have used, though, is more extras -- incentives to keep you playing. You, what, unlock a new title screen for beating all the par times, I think? Not incentive for me to keep playing.

They could have evolved the concept so
much more, much like Pushmo just adds to the basics the farther you go along. 16 or so levels were not nearly enough for the potential, esp since the early levels are really easy. The thing that really pissed me off was just how precise the timing was for the later levels, and that if you die you have to restart at the beggining of the level.

I honestly think that MSF has the best bang for your buck when it comes to the Wayforward games and that's not saying much!

Fantastic soundtrack though.

Hey, did we know that the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Save Data Update Channel was released in the US Wii Shop Channel? Surprised I didn't see it mentioned anywhere...

I just got it from the Wii Channels section of the Shop.
Went to buy Stonekeep (yeah, lol) and wanted to check to see if there were any updates to any of my channels. Saw a Netflix update and the SS tool available.
I don't see it listed in the OP, and when I was last in Clipper's Wii Soft Mod thread a few days ago, someone was asking if it was possible to port the JP tool to other regions...

You could say this about all the digital stores. I can buy many old full retail PS3/360 that are at similar or cheaper prices than some arcade/PSN games?

At least XBLA/PSN games go on sale sometimes...

+ budget wise those higher end PSN/XBL games are probably way more expensive and feature complete (online, achievements etc) than eShop or DSi games.

And 5-6€ for a portable download game is still money, it's not like we want iOS prices or games for free.

Especially when they aren't offering demos for downloadable games a higher price point will keep more potential buyers of the game.

Apparently they added it a month ago and didn't tell anyone. :P I just downloaded it to check it out. Zero production values. No backgrounds, basic sounds, mostly just text on a white screen. :P

Diarrhea fart balls or somthing.

You bring up completely different DD stores about which I didn't even talk. I didn't say that this wasn't a problem with those stores, I simply didn't mention them because I'm not particularly interested in those platforms.
Nonetheless, I don't really see your point as I said that Nintendo DD games seem overpriced when they have much less content than retail titles and are still cheaper at the same time. If you don't care about game prices, that's just fine. The lack of success for Nintendo DD stores seems to indicate that many people do care.

Well I just don't personally see it as the major problem when the same thing happens or can be said about other competing DD services vs old retail software thats all I ment.

I mean is it really fair to say Pac-Man Championship Edition DX which costs $10 is overpriced when I can pick up lets say Saints Row 2 for the same or similer price?

I think it's just more to do with Nintendo failing to communicate to their customers and not having enough compelling software in their eshops.

Contra 4 wasn't bad. Not great but not bad.

That's it though, it's still beyond me why people put them on a pedestal.
I really liked Contra 4.

Their pixelart is wonderful. But I think I'm done with them. They halfass everything but the art and music, and they don't really seem to care.

I think people just appreciate that while so many other folks are going to either extreme -- making only dudebro "AAA" games on the HD consoles or casual fare -- they're still trying to make quality games that will appeal to old-school folk and doing it on Nintendo systems where meaningful third-party experiences are so rare. Shantae: RR is probably my favorite thing by them, but I don't think anything they've done is mind-blowing. But most of what they've done has still been appreciated in this glut of sameness. Again, I think their biggest contribution is merely offering quality third-party products on Nintendo consoles. That's a rare thing these days.
