Doc's final Smash: "Join the Nintendo Fan Club today!"

He opens up a web page to Club Nintendo and the player can spend fake play coins on items or buffs. Wait, shit. This is actually amazing.

A Very Sad Dog and it's always looking at its empty food bowl and back at you and you feel sad and reach into the bowl and discover a photograph of a man. on the back of the photo is written a time, address, and detailed instructions.

"no dog no" you whisper "i left that life behind."

but dog keeps staring at you

I remember when I thought we agreed on so much :(

some fighting game styles are for some, this one is not my taste. I know the Smash Bros. clique is strong, but compared to my fighting games of choice, there is too much chance involved, it is far too shallow and the mechanics are actually quite dull. Virtua Fighter is my fighter of choice; but I sprinkle Street Fighter in there too.

I really dig the Mother remixes and the Mother stages, so since I have to own anything that is even remotely related to the series, that is why I get these games.

I hope they add a bunch of Mother 3 locations in this new one. I want a stage with a t-rex assaulting Hinawa in the background ;)

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
They should make Final Destination do 360 flips at random intervals so the stage is actually interesting.

i wonder if it'd be inappropriate to have a stage where Hinawa is in the background brushing your brother's hair with sad music playing delicately in the distance

I'm happy that the Melee metagame was destroyed.

Any circle that thrives on exploits to create some type of elitist circle jerk deserves to be smashed.

Besides, it's not like when Brawl was released they went around and sent Nintendo agents to snap every Melee disc. If you want your broken, snob slop you will always have the disc, no one's keeping you from playing it, but you can't expect the developers to expand on a broken model instead of moving forward and making a genuinely better experience for the majority, which is exactly what Brawl was.
Personally haven't seen any elitism circle jerking from the ones who enjoyed playing competitively (at least on GAF). Just saying.

I also may have missed the amount of complaints of Melee being a ruined, unplayable mess before Brawl came out, however, so my bewilderment may be unwarranted.

seriously geno is awful

but i always end up just buying the Smash games because they have a few Mother stages and characters, so my hope is... more characters from that series. I don't actually play this shit more than the handful of minutes it takes to see all the Mother stuff, so that's my hope.

the end
Considering they put effort into stopping people in America from playing a few minutes of Earthbound in Brawl, I have joined many Mother fans in accepting our fate of being ignored.

well they still had rad Mother music remixes and stages, so it's not completely ignored. if i want a five minute Earthbound demo I'll just instead pop in one of the three Earthbound cartridges I own in my SNES

mother 3, on the other hand...they should use this Smash Bros game as an excuse to just release the ENTIRE GAME as an easter egg for unlocking everything.

i'd fucking force myself through the Smash gameplay to 100% and get it.

As much as the mario series already seems over represented, there are so many more great characters they could use.

My number one would be Professor E. Gadd

ixgkg.jpg

Just a weird all around character with a ton of options for weapons. Vacuum, gameboy horror, fludd, that briefcase from M&L: PiT, etc.

Second most wanted is Kamek. They could make it another rep from Yoshi's series if they wanted to treat it that way.

LbVZ8.jpg

Another one that I don't necessarily actively wish for them to include, but would work really well as an ice climbers clone would be Baby Mario + Luigi. Think about it, they both have hammers, they could hit a shell instead of an ice block, use a fire flower move instead of the freeze attack, etc. Chain chomp final smash.

GcsS3.jpg

And then there's the longshot/no-chance-in-hell-shot, but it would be so awesome, Fawful.

S85YB.jpg

Oh, also King Boo could probably be cool.

Anyway, I would want every single one of these characters in before Geno. I don't know why he is so requested.

They need to have more characters in non-fighting roles. Like Tutorial Mode is hosted by Toadsworth, Sound Test hosted by 9-Volt of WarioWare, in-game Store hosted by Anna of Fire Emblem. Stuff like that.

As far as stages go, Bowser's Castle is long overdue. Longer than any other.

I'm a fan of all those characters but would hate to see them in Smash Bros. None of them besides the babies have starred in a game, and Mario and Luigi are already present so why double dip (same reason I didn't like Dr. Mario and Young/Toon Link).

Fawful is a semi-decent choice until you realize that he's a B-string Super Mario character. Remember the principle of opportunity cost - for everything you do there are things you can't do because of that. Fawful would be taking Mike Jones' or Andy's etc spot, and I'm not sure that's a balanced trade off just to taunt "I HAVE FURY!"

And now the sad realization that Bowser Jr. will make it in as a Bowser clone long before any other more interesting Mario characters.

Fawful or Paper Mario to represent the Mario RPG games. Those are the only other Mario characters I think Smash really needs.

Or troll everyone and make a playable Goomba.

Can't believe I never thought of Kamek with my odd fascination for more spell casters/magic types in Smash. He'd be hilarious, just lump him in as a Yoshi series character and he fits as a new character and franchise villain. Done and done.

and replaced with a metagame that peaked after a couple of months

I've never seen any elitsm from competitive Smash players here on GAF. You could point to Smashboards as evidence but every community has elitist pricks. MLG, SRK, whatever, it's not exclusive to Smash nor does it constitute the majority. You basically don't like that people found some tricks intentionally coded into the game and use them to make it more fun for them.

In fact, I see a lot more dissenting opinions towards competitive Melee and Smash in general than I see any elitsm from the competitive community.

Besides, it's not like when Brawl was released they went around and sent Nintendo agents to snap every Melee disc. If you want your broken, snob slop you will always have the disc, no one's keeping you from playing it,
Of course they didn't. What a silly thing to say. People still play Melee to this day. These people would just like a true sequel that stays true to the fast paced and technical gameplay that it had but with more stages, characters and a more balanced cast of characters.

but you can't expect the developers to expand on a broken model instead of moving forward and making a genuinely better experience for the majority, which is exactly what Brawl was.
Oh gee combos in Street Fighter 2, what a broken model, so glad they didn't expand upon tha- Oh wait they did.

Not every unintentional discovery is bad, and no one forced anyone to play with advanced techs in Melee.

I don't think you're wrong that the majority liked Brawl more, but I don't think it had anything to do with the gameplay. They probably liked more characters, more stages, and all the other stuff Sakurai added. At it's core, it still follows the fundamental rules of Smash. Ring outs and percentage damage. The majority probably doesn't give a shit about the changes in the gameplay engine because the majority loved Melee before Brawl and they just want to play Smash. Brawl just happens to be the sequel with more shit in it. So if the majority is just going to be happy anyways, why not at least try to make competitive players somewhat happy?

I prefer the obscure characters. I thought that Mr Game and Watch's inclusion was a stroke of genius.

I think it's much more satisfying to get characters like G&W, Capt. Falcon, Olimar, and Rob rather than Falco/Fox/Wolf just to "properly represent the series".

It depends on what you mean by "starred", but kamek has starred in several games, just as much as Ganondorf at least. You never play as him, but he is the main Villain in the three 2D yoshi games, as well as being a persistent enemy in mario games, most recently Galaxy 1/2.

E. Gadd would mostly be a WTF character, but he has actually shown up in quite a few games, often with a starring role.

Oh hey character speculation, I'll take some of that action.

Realistic Expectations I Don't Necessarily Care For:
Bowser Jr.- He's pretty annoying but he has major or supporting roles in every recent Mario thing. On the plus side, with his paintbrush and Shadow Mario stuff and machine building skills, he has the potential for a pretty unique moveset.
New Kid Icarus Rep(s)- Sakurai's tendency towards whatever the video game version of nepotism is, isn't exactly a secret. Palutena and/or Medusa being playable wouldn't be a huge surprise.
Little Mac- I actually like Little Mac and I think he'd be a great and interesting addition. I also think he's pretty likely, and due to the recent series revival he won't be taking up a "retro" character slot either.
Gen V Pokemon- Zoroark seems like the obvious candidate, but depending on when SSB4 releases, maybe one of the currently unreleased event Pokemon. Keldeo would have a solid moveset, and a playable Genesect would be really neat despite that reveal probably being quite a ways off.
Krystal- This is the least likely one on this part of the list, since we haven't seen her in a long-ass time and she's such an awkward addition to the franchise... but there's still stuff that doesn't hurt her chances. Nintendo's options for female characters are kinda low, she's got good moveset potential, and she's a Star Fox rep that wouldn't play anything like Fox.
New Fire Emblem rep- Don't have anyone in mind, I just expect we'll end up seeing one from a future game, maybe the upcoming 3DS title. Hopefully not another swordfighter this time.

Wishlist Characters:
Paper Mario- I don't have a whole lot of hope for this happening, but I love these spinoffs, and he could have such a cool moveset.
Ridley- I think "too big" is a lame excuse. They're figurines brought to life, him being Bowser-size wouldn't be the end of the world.
9-Volt- It'd be great to have more WarioWare reps, and I think 9-Volt has the most potential. His moves could vary between references to obscure Nintendo games, and using forgotten hardware peripherals as parts of his arsenal. I could also see maybe Mona happening instead of 9-Volt. Or possibly Ashley, but in her case I kinda hope not.
Tingle- Another unlikely choice, but he's great. I'd love to play as him.
Mega Man- It's a pretty perfect 3rd party choice in my opinion. Hopefully Nintendo and Capcom agree.

Misc:
- I think the Zelda characters will be updated to their Skyward Sword appearances, unless we get a new console LoZ game before SSB4's release (which I highly doubt). As a result, I think Zelda transforming into Shiek is going to get replaced by her summoning Impa into play.
- It'd be cool to see eShop titles/characters, like Pushmo and that armadillo cowboy game, get representation through Assist Trophies.
- Every sequel so far has had at least one "retro" character (Ice Climbers, Pit) and one WTF character (Game & Watch, ROB), and I think we'll get one of each again. I just don't currently have any solid guesses for what they'll be.
- I think/hope a Xenoblade or Last Story character could happen, but I'll reserve my guesses there till I actually get to play those games.

I like this list. A lot.

And yeah, next Fire Emblem rep has to use an ax or lance, enough with the swords already.

Between Wiimotes and Gamecube controllers, Brawl technically could have had up to 8. Five isn't super unreasonable but I still kinda doubt it's gonna happen.

Miyamoto should be a playable character and he should use Nintendo consoles and accessories to attack.

He should also be a Mii. Call him Miiyamoto.

I was going to say that Ridley is almost surely in since Metroid really has no where else to go. But then I remembered that Other M existed and Sakurai probably won't miss the opportunity to make the Metroid base angry by including Adam.

Because we belong to an elitist circle jerk that deserves to have our metagame crushed.

Apparently.
That's what you deserve for having the audacity to have fun with a game in a way that a developer didn't mean for you to, and being disappointed in the sequel lacking that depth that you enjoyed. Shame on you. Also, tripping was praised highly as an innovative improvement to the gameplay.
