Denis Dyack is working "on an IP that's our most requested" for the next generation.

Eternal Darkness is a bit of a weird game. I think I enjoyed it so much back in the day because a. the pacing is fantastic b. you're constantly being sent to new, interesting environments (or revisiting places you've been but in a different year c. the continuity between the characters was actually fairly interesting d. magic system with the runes and whatnot were kinda cool and e. exploring the house and finding its secrets was kinda cool.

when I tried to replay it a couple years ago, I was a bit surprised at how poor the voice acting was, how bad the writing was, and how clunky the controls were... but it was still a compelling experience because of the fantastic pacing. you're always going somewhere new. if you don't like the current area, dont' worry - you'll be done it in 20 minutes. it really felt like an adventure!

it's pulpy but not excessively long in the tooth. I think that's why it works for me.

Eternal Darkness 2, featuring their most terrifying sanity effect yet. If your meter gets too low, the game transforms into Too Human.

How about you start hearing Dennis Dyack's confrontational interview on the 1up Show (or was it EGM's podcast) where he confronts Mark McDonald and pontificates on philosphy, scrupulous and unscrupulous behaviour, norse mythology, the gaming media, etc.

I'd like to see Eternal Darkness 2 and the Wii U is probaly a great way to add tricks and surprises considering the sub-screen.

Eternal Darkness 2 on the Wii U could be a system seller for me.

Wasn't Eidos prepping a return to the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series a week or so ago? I'm sure I didn't imagine reading that news.

If that's unrelated, I would expect WiiU ED sequel

They're doing that in house. There's a lot of bad blood between Silicon Knights and Crystal Dynamics surrounding the franchise, so they wouldn't let SK touch it anyway.

Can anyone give a low down on why? No one's explained it yet keeps referencing it.

Crystal Dynamics and Silicon Knights went to court over the IP, which is now wholly owned by Square Enix/Crystal Dynamics. It seems rather unlikely that they would want to work together on anything.

So Silicon Knight's Xmen game came out September 27, 2011.

Which means, if Eternal Darkness 2 really is in development, then it will be a long time before it is released in stores. It'll probably need at least two full years of development at the minimum to make it a solid game.

Crystal Dynamics had to come in to help Silicon Knights finish Blood Omen, and apparently it was ugly.
Then there was a rights dispute. Silicon Knights had a separate idea for a sequel, but Crystal Dynamics won the legal dispute and SK had to walk away.
Then Silicon Knights tried to stop the release of Soul Reaver because Crystal Dynamics had used their research on vampires in the game without permission.

I'd say it's a safe bet they'll never work together again.

Yeah, this is definitely ED2. Damn, it's about time.

I highly doubt it's a launch title, though. Of course, it could just be an HD remake of the original.

Seeing as he said that they're "going back to their roots," I'd guess maybe working on the rumored Legacy of Kain reboot with Crystal Dynamics? (Oops! Didn't see Krev's post!)

If not that, I'd say ED2 again but this time, using Unreal Engine 4! Yeah, I can see a CliffyB vs Dyack battle of the egos or something. XD

If not, it has to be Eternal Darkness 2. Ok, I might be one of the few who liked Too Human (crappy story though), but I highly doubt it's what they're working on. Too Human is one of those stories in gaming that will go down in infamy.

Also, the game's story itself will never be resolved...unless they release a digital comic or something.

Eternal Darkness is one of my favorite games from last gen. I haven't played it in years though so I don't know if it's aged well or not. The combat was clunky as shit, but it still stands out as one of my best Gamecube experiences. I'd definitely be interested in seeing a sequel on Wii U

Too Human left me with a terrible taste in my mouth, but dammit I would play Too Human 2...

I wouldn't want to continue with the series in its current form. The setting, mythology etc isn't suited to the kind of ultra-gamey loot-whoring thing that they created. The cyber-Norse aesthetic has shitloads of potential even though I think it was poorly executed in the finished product. The ancient-Earth civilization collapsing in on itself that you know will be forgotten in time is great. The Virtual Reality world embodying their hopes for the future is great.

But damn, the cutscenes aren't well made, the dialogue isn't well written, the graphics aren't very good, and every time I have to play the game itself? Why is my Cyber-Norse god this ultra-floaty dude who zips around the battlefield throwing dudes into the air before combo juggling them? I would liken it to watching a serious mobster movie, except when the characters are having a confrontation, instead of guns they pull out a deck of cards and start playing Poker to determine the victor. Like one of those puzzle games that has a serious story that gets really poorly integrated. The gameplay is just so fucking inappropriate.

I just really...REALLY hope this isn't nintendo's "one more thing" at the end of their conference. As much as I'd love a sequel to ED, that'd kinda suck tbh.

Nintendo usually doesn't have "one more things" though, so this'd be a step up. The last one I remember was Metroid Other M at E3 2009, and we all know how that worked out.

This would be an E3 megaton for me, as long as it looks good.

They'll announce it after explaining the vitality sensor grips on the Upad

don't forget Twilight Princess :p

that's where it all began...

Oh and other m was awesome if you took a piss break or went to get a snack during the cutscenes

I'd rather they showed a game we weren't anticipating. Plus, I'm wary of SK so my excitement would be tempered unless they ran a simply jaw dropping trailer.

It would have been perfect if Dyack were able to keep his mouth shut.

My fantasy end-of-conference anouncements would be:

Retro developing Mach Rider/Startropics/Starfox/F-zero (in order of decreasing hype)

Monster Hunter for Wii U

Nintendo vs. Capcom

Pokemon Snap 2 (yes, really!)

I think a lot of people like the CONCEPT of Eternal Darkness so much that it overshadows how much of a bad GAME it is.

I'm one of those people.

Indeed.

I'll help you out there: games don't age.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes: Sons of Big Boss

I would rage so hard.

Im just going to laugh. Like I do at everything Dyack says.
I don't know I thought this was the saddest bit:
"We're smaller, obviously," he said referring to layoffs, "and we're going back to our roots. I'm really looking forward to a point in time when we can talk about it, it's just not today. That's the current state of things. I think the state of our demise has been greatly exaggerated. Here we are. We're here."
All because of his shoddy management.

Eternal Darkness would be awesome. I absolutely love the game and, as someone who is pretty time-constrained and typically does not replay games, it's a testament to its quality when I identify it as one of three games in the past ten years that I've finished then instantly replayed. In ED's case, I played it three times to reach the final ending before moving onto a new game.

The game's 60 FPS also wows me, not sure why though. Maybe because it's a slow-paced adventure game, yet it looked so smooth and gorgeous?

Eternal Darkness without sanity effects would be like Mario without a jump button or Halo without guns.
Honestly, I just hope for them to be a bit more subtle. Blood dripping from the walls, statues following you, the smaller things in the first that made it believable.

I wasn't a fan of most of the effects because they weren't convincing. The system muting, or your body falling apart, gravity shifting. They all took me out of the experience because they stalled the action. White flash! and your movements matter again.

It was just really sloppy. I'd want them to tone down the explicit ones, and focus more on the subtle. Shadows occasionally stalking you, an unintelligible voice talks to you through the controller, sometimes the clocks have eyes. Small touches. The game was never scary to me, this kind of thinking could make it so.

What's great about ED is how well integrated all of its individual parts are (strangely enough what Too Human was terrible at). The story is the combat is the level design is the spell system is the story. It's an absurdly intricate design and they somehow pull it off.

That would be a fine assessment if Eternal Darkness was a bad game.

The controls are terrible, dialogue laughable at times while great in others, and challenge is near nonexistent -- the only challenge is from the aforementioned bad controls.

It might not be a BAD game, but it's not a very good one. It's memorable for what it does right (environments, atmosphere, tone) which is where I think most of the real praise comes from.

Wait... I thought the controls were pretty good.

It was the best controlling horror style game I'd played at the time. It was also nice being able to aim for heads.

Don't get me wrong, I adore Eternal Darkness... but trying to replay it these days is an exercise in frustration for the most part. "OH COME ON" and "STOP GETTING STUCK ON THE WALL" is a common phrase from me while playing it.

SK has to be one of the most talked about b tier developers ever. So much drama and odd hype for a dev studio that releases so infrequently and the quality (especially in recent years) so questionable.

I can see that.

Until that point I was used to the RE style control scheme for my horror titles. ED was a breath of fresh air back then... back then being the operative.
