Theoretically lightning should be a one hit kill and even with redirection it should really fuck up the target.

I imagine airbending could be pretty deadly, sucking the oxygen out of someone's lungs, or their immediate area. By nature and the way they're raised though, I would think that sort of force would be looked down upon.
Well this is a kids show and in general I agree with the saying that too much magic ruins a fantasy so I'm a big fan of limited bending abilities. I think blood bending should mostly be forgotten about, it was a cool thing but only a select few can do it. Airbending should be what it is and no cutting off people's air supply.

Have there been any hints about an episode about what happened to Azula after she lost to Zuko and Katara? She went to a mental health facility, but I think it would be interesting to see what happened to her in there and if she ever got to the point of being able to live a functional life in the world (though that would probably need to have Aang Energybend her and that could be too dangerous to do)

I think that will be in the comics. Aang probably can't energy bend so easily, I think his life is at risk every time he takes someone's bending away.

That's like a lot of TV shows actually. The pilot/beginning and the finale typically use up the most of the budget. Sometimes this really hurts the in-between but I doubt that would happen with Mike and Brian in charge.
Something about having a stronger resolve. That's what almost happened to Aang when he did it to Ozai. That's why his "spirit" was almost entirely engulfed by the Fire Lord's. Aang almost "lost".
Second episode had a few animation quality dips.

I noticed a few facial drawings not as detailed. I would have to rewatch but I can try and do that later today(like in the afternoon, it's 2 am here).
Your spirit has to be "unbendable" or you will be corrupted and destroyed. Even then the technique doesn't look like chid's play. My guess is even the best and most pure people have to struggle immensely to pull it off.

Not really. There isn't that much crucial backstory to the story so far.
It's a new series so it's made to appeal to both new and old fans. If you've seen TLA you'll understand a lot more about the show's mythology, history, bending, etc. though.
I think you may be onto something.

Anyway, since seeing the new episodes I decided to pick up The Promise graphic novel. I thought it was actually pretty good, but kind of short. Seeing Aang and Katara call each other sweetie while grossing out Sokka and Toph is hilarious. Zuko still struggling with his bloodline and duty and his own convictions makes for some good material. It's just kind of nice seeing how not every thing has been cleaned up after the events of the first series. Really wish it didn't end on a cliffhanger.
