Choosing a gaming Mouse

Hello GAF,

I seem to have found myself in the predicament of choosing a mouse for myself. I am currently fed up with my wireless mouse and am looking to upgrade to nice wired mouse (or even dual wired/wireless). I generally use my PC for gaming so a gaming mouse will do fine.

I've been looking at the following mice and trying to decide between them:

Razer Deathadder ReSpawn
Razer Mamba
SteelSeries Sensei Fnatic
SteelSeries Diablo III
ROCCAT Kone+ v2

Any advice/information/suggestions would be most welcome concerning choosing one, and feel free to list some other mice you think may be good.

I should also state that pricing isn't a particular issue.

Grip style: Fingertip (base of palm rests on the table - nearly none of the palm touched the mouse)

I use a stock HP laser mouse. I feel like it's a handicap and I feel amazing when I own people on TF2 with my inferior mouse.

I got this as well.

But if I got some spare now, I'd get the Steelseries Ikari Laser. Then pair it with a steelseries QcK mousepad and you won't feel anything better than that. I've tried so many gaming mouse and only the Ikari Laser pretty much stands out.

Ive used many a gaming mouse in my time.

I would recommend a steelseries mouse.

Esp the Ikari (Laser) ... if you like the feel of old microsoft intellimouse and have larger hands it is amazingly comfortable.

If your hands are smaller a steelseries xai or something of the sort might be good , and sensei looks nice.

Wired is better for gaming period. Cant tell u how many times i get lulz out of peoples wireless mice losing juice during a match.

The size, shape and features are personal preference so it's hard to give advice on that. When it comes to sensors it all depends on what level of perfection is needed. For example, most people will never notice the flaws in the Avago 9500 sensor that most laser mice use, and most people don't mind a bit of angle-snapping. The Deathadders or G400/MX518 are solid choices if the shapes suit you.

Yeah it's so good that it's a predecessor to the mx518. They nailed something with that and years later they basically gave it a new shell and I think a slight bump ip in max DPI, guessing it was popular enough on the first revision they were confident people would want it.

My mx518 lasted like 3-4 years but eventually after a few glasses of water the middle wheel button stopper working...Decided to upgrade and went with a logitech G400 as it's simple but perfect layout is just great.

Tried heaps but regardless of price the G400 just has such a great feel and layout which fit my medium size hands perfectly. Couldn't live without the back and forward buttons on a mouse and the dpi button selection layouts are great if you like toggling DPI for certain guns ala Machine gun lower dpi >sniper rifle higher dpi it's all great and not over bloated with features you'll never use.

Quality control. People claim they fail and begin double-clicking at a rapid rate.

My old Deathadder lasted 3 - 4 years before it died from the double-click syndrome. I was very pleased with what I got from it.

But my new Logitech G700 is the best mouse I've ever owned. Thing is awesome.

Depends on your grip and sensitivity preferences

From personal experience I tend to avoid Razer mice, because even though they performed nice when they worked, all have died relatively soon.
I have the precursor to the Sensai and am quite happy with it.

In any case, I'd try before I buy.

I use the Logitech g9x myself and love it! I find it more comfortable than my old mx518.

I've been reading some horror stories about the razor mouses where they have double clicking problems after a couple of months.

Yes, I've been through that Razer craze and got my fingers burnt. They make flimsy shit at premium prices which tends to break often. Roccat ain't much better either, went through 4 of their original Kones, all with the same issue.

Get a Logitech G500 / 700 and don't look back.

PC shops near me only display cheap generic brands, Microsoft (which are made by Logitech) and Logitech mice. You can't try before you buy these days. If Razer et al were smart they'd have demo units available in gaming stores.

I just want to vouch for the Razor DeathAdder Black Edition.

Not only is it the best mouse I've ever used, due to the sort of plastic used, it still looks like it's new. a little less than 2 years and still going way strong even though I treat it reallllllly badly.

I think he means they've been brainwashed by the brand and don't know any better.

While I'll agree Logitech drivers have tended to suck and their products slightly over-rated in the past (with their wireless often flat out sucking), the G700 is a thing of beauty. And the drivers are the best mouse drivers I've ever used.

I bought a Razer Lachesis last year and after 2 hours of use I already had problems with the sensor. The pointer would skip all over the place on the screen, really annoying. Bought a G500 two weeks ago and it's way better, bedt mouse ever.

MX518 all the way. I had one that lasted thousands of hours over 5 years without problems. Even when the mouse feet wore out I just bought a roll of teflon tape and it was good until the sensor eventually went.

Right now I have a Deathadder which is about 1.5-2 years old. It's good too but I really only got it to give the higher dpi a try. Next mouse I'll get, barring any huge innovations in gaming, will be another MX518.

Stay away from all that overpriced fancy "gaming" stuff. All the razer mice seem to put looks before function. Im still bitter about my shitty Copperhead from a few years ago. My MX518 has seen me good ever since.

Yep, I got myself a G500 too a few weeks ago. Great mouse, lovely design, love the granite look. I actually wanted the G700, but got a nice deal for the G500. Though I wished it used the Logitech Gaming Software instead of setpoint, then I wouldn't have to install and load another program on startup, since my G510 keyboard also uses the Gaming Software.

Razer quality is pretty much hit or miss. I've heard of people that had no problems whatsoever but I've had a lot problems. Keys on my keyboard that just stopped working, mouseclicks that register several times etc. I also had huge problems with their drivers, they would lock up my system for a few seconds every few minutes. Really annoying.

Claw grip with 2 fingers on top? That's just like me. Your listed options don't look great for the way I do my grip except for that Roccat. I have loved using mice like the Copperhead and Habu but they're not too reliable long term so I'm using a Logitech G9x with the slimmer textured grip now.

The Mamba is a sturdy and properly high quality gaming mouse. I have been using the one I got a few years back without looking back.

Steel Series Ikari are very nice. Good size, but very light. Although it does have CPI adjustments it's a very no frills mouse.

I've heard this too. Luckily my DeathAdder from 2007 is still going strong. Don't know what I'll do when I have to replace it; best mouse I've ever owned.

I'm actually using a Lachesis right now and had the same problem. Sometime the mouse would just cease to respond and I had to unplug and replug it. In the midst of a game of Starcraft 2...it really sucked.

Then I read a bit on the Internet...apparantly, to fix the problem, you must not install the mouse drivers and simply use it as a plug and play peripheral. Luckily it retains all of its functionalities even then. Only thing you can't do is changing the color of the mouse, but it will retains whatever settings you last put it on so if you really want to change it, you can install the drivers, then modify, then deinstall.

Since then it works 99 % flawlessly, with the very occasional cursor getting jammed on the X-axis for 2-3 seconds.

Never again though.

I hate non-symmetical mice. That Steel Series Sensei mouse looks pretty hot. I still use a Logitec MX 310, I have had it for about 8 years.

I would also vote for a Razer, after having had some Logitech mouses that fell apart quite fast, I bought a Razer and never had any complaints. They're sturdy, fast, fluent, everything a gamer can ask for!
