The Wii U Speculation Thread V: The Final Frontier

Well your other choices are weaker than PS360 and on par with PS360. At the same time with PS2, Xbox wasn't heavily (if at all) in the discussion at the time, and to this day you still have some people debating GC's power compared to PS2. So it wasn't in the same position as Wii U.

Funny, I thought that I had the option of referring to it as the lowest tier of the next generation. I didn't realize that I had to take the rhetoric of a half-generational step or have it be a Wii situation all over again. Ehh, shows what I know, I guess.

Hmmm, here's an interesting speculation for the crowd; does anyone expect this year's GOTY to be on Wii U?

Whose GOTY? Mine? Maybe. GAFs? It's not like even the major publications agree.

GOTY is dumb. How can there be 8 "GOTY editions" in the same year? I don't care what GameBombgn likes.

It will be. Wii was the lowest tier of this console generation, though.

So from browsing the last couple of pages, we're now looking at the Wii U as middle between PS360 and PS480?

As having been said numerous times, it all comes down to the third-party engine support. If Wii U is a slider setting and a few weeks of tweaking to port for multi-platform games, it'll get them, unless the sales start tanking on those games. If it requires custom development with a separate team, then probably not. Hopefully that gets addressed at E3. :/

It was at least somewhat addressed coming from the other direction by the DarkstalkersDarksiders team, who claimed that it took about five weeks from no knowledge of the system to a full port. That's pretty promising for the future systems, I think.

edit: fixed a think probably caused by being in bed with one eye barely open at time of post. :O

I didn't mean me because I want Pikmin 3 more than Infinite but I don't think Paper Mario is a 2012 game. Early 2013. methinks.

I was reffering to GAF at large too. Naively. But I was.

I'm laughing at the idea of Paper Mario coming out this year.
And now I'm crying.

Nintendo seems to think it's 2012, for Japan, at least, although that could be FY rather than calendar year.

I would say there is a pretty good chance, but I'm not sure. NSMB 2 for August, In Japan there is Animal Crossing for Fall and presumably Luigi's Mansion 2 for Winter. Personally, I think it may be a bad idea to put a Paper Mario around Luigi's Mansion 2 but maybe it's not. I expect we will hear of a major 3DS game intended for this Winter and I think Nintendo will bump Paper Mario to Spring '13.

Didn't know there was a new Dalkstalkers in development :p

I just saw that Colors! 3D Thread
damn, that app it's just amazing.
I can see it being a killer app on Wii U. It begs to be in it
I'm so excited about all the possibilities this new controller will bring to the table :D

Luigi's Manson, NSMB and Paper Mario are all very different. Although I understand the opinion of "too many Marios at once," they don't cross the same genre. I think they'll be compelled to release 'em as ready and try to knock this X-mas out of the park. A-level Marios like Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 came out within a month of each other last X-mas, after all.

If they can stagger them like NSMB in August, Luigi in October and Paper in November or December I think that'd be fine. Stuff like Strikers and Tennis should launch far apart, as should 2D and 3D mainline Mario, but I don't see a problem with these 3.

With the new info that Microsoft's E3 conference will be more about services than games, and the fact that I can see Sony going down that same route with the PS4, I wonder if Nintendo will benefit for being the console that's the most focused on gaming more than anything else.

It's clear that Microsoft just wants to make an entertainment system that also happens to play videogames. I wonder if maybe they'll focus more on providing services than games. Who knows. I've yet to decide if that's a good idea or not, but it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Nintendo has another big problem with price.

The more expensive Wii U is, the less chance people will buy third party games at launch when they pick up the console.

I mean most likely everyone will choose Nintendo published titles as their first and second games. And they won't have money left for a lot of third party games.

And then third party launch week sales will be horrendous.

This is tangentially related, but I've been thinking about the potential launch titles and how they'll cannibalize each other. I think the launch is going to be very good in terms of software, but it's going to be a total disaster in terms of sales for most of the games. Like if a 2D Mario is a launch title, who the hell is going to buy Rayman? (Other than people with good taste, of course.) Assassin's Creed III is the other big thing that's just going to eat into everything. Darksiders II, Batman, Ninja Gaiden 3, Aliens, Killer Freaks...there's too much overlap in terms of audience and genre. Nintendo is going to have to manage that early release schedule very, very carefully to avoid pissing off third parties. I wouldn't be surprised if we see relatively few titles at actually launch but a steady stream of releases following that up.

so what are the chances of all or any:

Bioshock infinite
Skyrim GOTY edition
Residentt Evil 6
GTA V

on WiiU

if those got announced on E3 ,,,not even
Zelda wiiU
trailer can eclipse that megatonS !!

I just hope to god that its happening -__-"

Wii U being the only new console at E3 with MS and Sony supposedly not ready to even tell us that their new hardware is even in the works leaves Nintendo with a free and open market.

A decent price, some good OS features (online integration, apps etc) and unique controller ... coupled with a few Nintendo First party exclusives and some decent third party surprises ..

... they have a great chance to shift a lot of units well before MS or Sony even announce their machines and get people used to big third party games being on a Nintendo console.

I'd say that RE6 and GTA5 are locks for the system. I think GTA5 will be announced for the Wii U at E3. Rockstar hasn't announced it for any system yet and I think that they would've already made system announcements if it were only for the PS3, 360 and PC.

I guess this would raise the question: Is it better for one third-party game (say AssCreedIII) to sell very close to 1:1 or would it be better for all of those games to do modest to good numbers? I am going to go with the latter.

It also raises the point about the possible elephant at the launch, Mario. I don't think they need to, or will, pack in Mario (if it is a launch game) but if it were packed in it could free up the possibility of a launch buyer picking up another game.

Bioshock infinite
Skyrim GOTY edition
Residentt Evil 6
GTA V

GTA V and RE6. Infinite has been in development for awhile so I don't see them caring about a Wii U version. Bethesda barely gave a shit about the PS3 version of Skyrim so I don't see Wii U in their sights (better be for Fallout 4 though).

This is, perhaps, my number one reason for wanting the U to launch maybe in October (or even September) instead of November. In theory, developers will have had more time than they had with the Wii - even if Nintendo were to go with a September release - so their games should have a better degree of polish and precision anyway.

Personally, I had originally intended on going into Launch Day with a $500 budget. But with the console being at least $300 (in all likelihood), games potentially being $60 apiece, and my food/liquor budget for that week of vacation adding-up quickly, that price point looks like it won't be do-able. Especially when E3 comes along and Nintendo begins to bombard us with several sizzle reels and secret projects and surprise third-party titles.

I'm going to have to work some overtime during this summer. (There's also the matter of Christmas shopping for nieces and nephews; we don't have kids, so they get spoiled with new systems and one or two games. Their Nindoctrination is going quite well.. {*evil laugh*} )

so what are the chances of all or any:

Bioshock infinite (10% chance)
Skyrim GOTY edition (10% chance)
Residentt Evil 6 (25% chance)
GTA V (10% chance)

on WiiU

(Above, my gut-level predictions.)

Nintendo can go all-out in trying, but I don't have much faith in western third parties giving them a fair shake. And I'm still not convinced of Capcom finally getting over that hump where they go from giving us "Lovely Consolation Prize Games" to "Grand Prize Games."

i dunno, I have this feeling that Micro is planning a blowout of some sort for GTA5 in their conference (even though its a multiplat) ,,,,,,but Nintendo securing R* at their conference AND announcing GTA5 ,,,,I swear I would cry like a little girl T_T , RE6 is possibility but not as a launch title, more like 6 months after

u know something is telling me all of those wont come to the console but with state of economy and videogames industry right now, one can only hope for those games to be released on every capable hardware

Bethesda have no experience on any Nintendo platform right ?

Could be please stop with all those "If WiiU is 2x 360 then PS4 is 4x WiiU"

That is absolutely stupid. We don´t even know how much faster WiiU will *exactly* be. Heck we may never now for sure!

The CPU and GPU are propably highly customized. "Comparing" it with freaking "Target specs" of a completely different architechture?

The PS4 will most likely be more powerful than WiiU, but no one at this point could say by how much.

I kinda like this idea, it makes sense

I don't know, Rockstar rarely gives a shit about E3 and likes to talk about their games on their own time, especially GTA. No way they cede that to Microsoft. There may be some talk about platforms but I doubt the game will be anywhere else at E3.

You do, it will likely sit closer than PS2 vs Xbox, because the PS2 was below half the specs of the Xbox, but didn't even have the same technological features as the Xbox (more modern shaders that could do stuff that PS2 simply could not.)

Also he says PS4 is a full generation leap, but puts the output of the GPU somewhere at 1.8Tflops, which is half what the HD7970 does today on PCs, and next year will be even slower compared to the HD8970.

There is absolutely no chance of Consoles keeping up with PCs this time, and Wii U's specs seem to point at about half the specs of the Xbox3, which is generally thought to be the most powerful future console.

His speculation has so much riding on subscriptions helping the profits of these next consoles, when only Microsoft has announced something in this regard, and he expects netflix, hulu, hbo, ect to be bundled in the $15 xbox live subscription as if it would be profitable to Microsoft to do that... heck netflix and hulu alone would cost more than $15, so where is the profit?

Basically BG knows some target specs for the PS4, and they are at least 33% faster than Wii U's target specs (which at best are 1.2Tflops, 3 core double threaded IBM chip) AMD of course can't do double threaded cores, and performance wise should be slower per core per hz than a modern CPU from IBM, yet the GPU being targeted at 1.8Tflops is enough for him to declare something like 10x the Xbox360 (which is actually only 7.5x the GPU)

Combined all of this with the fact that budgets won't grow much this next gen from most developers, and you start to wonder if Xbox3 and PS4 won't even use the extra power for anything really noticeable. The only way we will actually see a generational leap is with some sort of GPGPU, which PS4 could have according to rumors, but won't leave Wii U behind anything close to this current gen.

OUt of all the games, GTA5 is the last one I'd expect seeing on the WiiU. Allthough it would make sense, I'm not holding my breath for it.

I've been holding off on Skyrim for the GOTY edition, as I'm assuming the glitches would be fixed in that version.

It would be cool to play it on Wii U, assuming it's technically the best version.

Nintendo needs a director of third party support. One for each region.

Somebody we could hold accountable if shit doesn't pan out.

I don't care one bit for GTA personally, but I think I would laugh like a friggin' loon at such a revelation. It'd be such great news for Nintendo, and the reactions around gaming media would be hilarious.

And no matter how many times Microsoft says they aren't revealing a new console this year at E3, I don't trust them as far as I can throw them. "We have no plans to reveal" is not the same as "we absolutely, positively will NOT be revealing." This might be a case where Microsoft has learned the virtue of using the element of surprise at an E3 conference. Everyone seems to be buying into their line right now, so they'd certainly have everyone shocked a bit, even with just a meagre reveal in the style of the Wii U last year.

I've gotta have my mods. Those alone extend the life of the game for years, maybe even decades. I could see myself playing modded Morrowind and Oblivion when I'm an old, old man.

@bolded: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...a... hahaha...

sorry, but expecting Bethesda to fix a game is just a cruel joke at this point.

Hell with the latest patch for the PS3 Bethesda introduced a new Bug that hangs up Skyrim when you touch water.

But I guess most of the most blatant bugs should be eliminated, so yeah, I'm also waiting for a GOTY edition myself.

So a developer in Santa Monica has been showing off the Wii U version of their game to certain journalists in the area this week.

Someone list off all the developers in Santa Monica so we can get this speculation rolling.

Those are in Santa Monica:

Activision (Call Of Duty, publisher)

Treyarch (Call Of Duty, developer)

100% Chance it was Call Of Duty

SCE Santa Monica could be ruled out, unless Nintendo bought Sony ;)
