To understand the GTA situation, think about the money Rockstar can make.

As in, think about the money they will make from a franchise that size in a given period over launch.

This is what Nintendo would have to match, or exceed, to secure any kind of exclusivity. They'd have to match what the game would make on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for, say, a month or two at launch. Because that is what Rockstar would make otherwise. It's not in their interest to give Nintendo any kind of exclusivity agreement unless Nintendo is matching the money they could make.

And that kind of money is so insane it's just not worth it. Every cent would be better spent on investing in new games from other independent studios. It cost Microsoft $50,000,000 for timed exclusivity of two DLC packs.

For comparison, here are some game budgets:
God of War 3: $44,000,000
Uncharted: $20,000,000
Killzone 2: $45,000,000
Crysis: $22,000,000
Assassin's Creed 2: $24,000,000

Nintendo could make one or two big budget games for the price it would cost them for any timed GTA V exclusivity. It's madness and if they did it they're fucking idiots.

I assume the game looks just the same as it will do on other consoles. Interesting part would be if the briefing included any word on online.
I think Nintendo paying to be sure to have the "superior" (console) version, visually polished to take advantage of the Wii U and with deep focus on the Upad use, would be more interesting than exclusives DLC.

Based on common sense suggesting a straight port (visually) is about as much as you can ask for when moving a franchise to a market that traditionally isn't important for that franchise/genre.

Right, at the beginning of a consoles life it's unlikely any multi-plat game will look much better, it would be up to Nintendo to decide to produce a visually better game.

Didn't know the sum MS payed for it, that's insane.

I'm getting "Xbox 360" vibes from that WiiU model...

Also, shame if that list of launch titles is fake. It's pretty much perfect.

I don't think it's supposed to be a launch line-up, Metro: Last Light for example was delayed to 2013 so that will definitely not be a launch game. And I don't think two Rabbids games and Shield Pose at launch is perfect by any means.

I didn't realise you were also assuming the game was Call of Duty.. IF its Call of Duty then its safe to assume it'll look very similar graphically, though still not necessarily the same.

And the WiiU console itself (Filed: 5/12/11 Published: 14/2/12 - source) which seems to be the E3 '11 design. (not final?)

There's a good chance this is just a place-holder; if there has been any significant hardware change I don't see why they would update their patents and risk spilling the beans on already protected IP before E3.

I think they can do better. It's a very safe, and predictable list. It honestly looks just like what the Blockbuster guy said, a list of games you would guess to put in your database, I thin Nintendo should go for some surprises, after all this ninja stuff.

Much better is a subjective term, some will certainly look better though.

When I say much better I guess I mean to the naked eye, you know to the average person just passing by, I doubt someone that doesn't really know what their looking for could pick the Wii U version out of a lineup, even if it's better.

Which is why they won't. They'd be better served by investing in perhaps five new games from interested 3rd parties that might otherwise not have the scale to make an impressive Wii U game but have good ideas.

I don't know, Pikmin and NSMB look to satisfy all those that criticised the 3DS for its lack of third party. Hasn't everyone been wishing for Pikmin forever?

The real question is, how much do they have to pay to get a port of the game? R* probably still doesn't want to risk supporting Nintendo for free.

I would consider that lineup to have enough first-party and third-party support for a good launch, yes. My point was just, we've been waiting a year for Wii U launch details, it would be a shame if all of this was for nothing but to announce stuff that people assumed would have a good chance of being there.

They would have to outbid Microsoft, which is impossible.

I was just about to say this...

Even if R* were considering revealing the game at Nintendo's conference, MS would be like, "Yeah, we'll pay you $10 million to reveal it at ours instead." Bam!

....

Part of me wonders if this is an exaggeration.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit..

I am a bit surprised at the confidence around here in getting GTA. A good number of us were confident for a Wii version for IV, too.

I still think the first party launch line-up will be:
Pikmin 3
"Wii Sports equivalent"
Retro's game
Wii U Play

I think this because the line-up would provide a good balance and have plenty of sales potential. Pikmin 3 has been in development for a long time so should be one of the first Wii U games. We know Nintendo is making a game that is supposed to be to the U as Wii Sports was to Wii, if there is a pack-in game it's most likely this (my best guess is still that it's a drawing game, as that would have obvious appeal and hasn't been done on a very large scale before). Retro has been known to complete huge amounts of development during crunch time, they made Metroid Prime in under two years, Echoes was apparently only 30% complete 3 months ahead of its release. If Nintendo wants a Retro game at launch, it'll be there (unless there are quality concerns like MP3). And finally I think Wii U Play would be there to give the Wii audience something to buy the console for if they don't do so for the the Wii Sports equivalent, Wii U Play would probably be a collection of some of the demos from last year's E3, like Chase Mii, Battle Mii, Shield Pose etc.

Not sure if Lego City Stories would be there at launch, we'll see.

It probably isn't. I really hate how much power MS has over major third-party games. This is the type of game that should have a demo at all three conferences.

Why were people expecting a Wii version of GTA4? That game was built entirely around current gen tech.

I think at the very least people expect the Wii U to be on par with the PS3 and 360, so Rockstar won't run into any issues with tech. Nintendo has also talked quite a bit about trying to appeal to the core gamer, so GTA is a must. I'm sure that they know how important that series is and how it would be seen as a bad sign for Western dev support on the Wii U if that game isn't on the system.

I don't think MS has anything to do with 3rd parties not giving a shit about Nintendo, you may be right about (some) games not appearing at Sony's conference, though I'm not really sure if this is due to MS.

Absolutely true. The issue is that MS is capable of doing that. That's what is fucked up.

Still needs optical output for sound (tos-link), or I have to buy a new reciver. =(
Would be limited to stereo, so what's the point? S/PDIF, and therefore Toslink in most consumer applications, simply doesn't support six channel LPCM, which is what Nintendo uses.

Nintendo hasn't been about censorship since ESRB took the burden off their shoulders. They wouldn't have developed/produced Conker's Bad Fur Day, Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, etc. GCN had nudity in Dave Mira's BMX XXX, PS2 didn't. Nintendo only censors their own stuff when ESRB forces them to for a rating they want, like green blood to get an E rating for OoT.

If Rockstar wanted to put GTA on WiiU without Nintendo having to moneyhat them like crazy they'd love it.

Yeah I really wish that'd happen as well. San Andreas Stories apparently wouldn't have been a technical issue on PSP, so it certainly wouldn't on 3DS.

The question is whether they'd go back to that level of tech, and that art style, universe etc.

Nintendo will have to moneyhat, though. The main reason for wanting to support a console at launch is to build up a fan base on it, and let's not kid ourselves; there's no chance in hell that Wii U will be able to run the next-gen GTA games acceptably.

I seem to remember them pointing at console sales numbers, as though it were some sort of trump card.

Reggie also talked a good game about how much he'd love to get GTA, how important a title it is, etc.. so that might've spurred some feeings of confidence as well. I was in the "I'll believe it when I see it" camp, just like I am today.

You really have a problem. You tend to make definite statements about things you do not know.

Digital audio (coaxial) through the "AV Multi-Out connector" a possibility?

Lets hope for something, I mean Microsoft had tos-link on its multi-out cables.
Would suck if all I could get was stereo-sound because the only way to get better sound formats is to buy a new receiver that support hdmi-input for sound.
