That set of rules sounds about right--the only games it doesn't seem to apply to are Dr. Mario, which has its music interspersed to two non-Mario stages, but then again Brawl doesn't seem to consider it a core Mario series, considering its stickers are not listed alongside the other Mario games but with the other puzzle titles like Tetris Attack.

Music customization would be good. It sucks you only get to really listen to like a fifth of the soundtrack if your playing on the better stages. I wonder of they will ever do a poll again, i wasn't around for the first one.

I just watched the Giant Bomb Quick Look for Awesomenauts, and I realized that something like that would be a pretty awesome mode in Smash Bros. and would work pretty perfectly.

Of course, I'm sure someone will try to explain why it's a horrible, awful idea that would never work and would completely break Smash Bros. as we know it, instead of considering the possibilities and how it could be adapted to work in the context of Smash.

...Nope, that's actually a pretty great idea. I've always been vying for more creative game modes in Smash, and something like this or an action RPG have always been the ones my friends and I talk about as having great potential. Make it happen, Sakurai!

I have this theory that Dr. Mario was going to get his own world icon in Brawl (a megavitamin) had he made the final cut. There's nothing to back that up, but as you mentioned, Dr. Mario is sort of treated as its own series in Brawl with regards to music and stickers.

Also, the most likely version of the original character select screen would have had him separated from the main Mario cast:

Where's Sonic?

I assumed that you are playing the role where if they didn't add sonic last minute and finished up 6 characters.

Maturity, bitches.
Just as they gave Captain Flacon and Ness their own stages in Melee, ROB needs to have his own stage in SmashU.

And that is why Dr Mario will not return because fighting in a bottle is rubbish. Besides a Super Mario Bros 2 vase would be much better.

Whose helmet did she wear (your avatar)

Oh right, I forget the fact that they didn't have their own stage in 64.

I want an instance where the music reflects the state of the match. As in, who ever's winning, their theme starts playing over the background, similar to how battle music in 3D zelda's work.

That paired with the audience chanting = bliss

So kind of like the boss tunes from Skies of Arcadia?

If they could make it weave in well it could be interesting. If it ends up flipping between different tunes it could get rather annoying. Tatsunoko vs Capcom suffered from this in the original release.

do you know who stitched the clothes in your avatar bgbw

A suggestion for a stage: a Mario Party themed stage, kinda similar to the WarioWare stage. Main portion of the stage would be the board. A dice appears over the platform and players can hit it. The platform will be moved according to the number rolled. Depending on where the platform lands, players can either receive bonus like stars, mushrooms or gain health or they can be taken to a mini-game. The mini-games purpose would be similar to the ones on WarioWare, but they'd be based on Mario Party mini-games.

Additionally, some of the mini-games would be themed around the Mario sports series, like Tennis or Golf. So this stage would actually represent all Mario spinoff titles, sans Mario Kart. Hell, you could even have a mini-game or a board event themed around Mario Paint, just for the hell of it.

Following the template laid down by the WarioWare stage I think this Mario Party stage could be pretty cool.

This is where I currently stand on the roster; my final predictions until E3:

There are 48 characters (including transformations). "New IP" is Miyamoto's new character which we'll hopefully see at E3. If not then I'll replace that with somebody else.

If you're going to do a final prediction before E3 you're better off going with about three characters you expect them to reveal IF they show any footage off. A complete roster reveal is a bit much if you ask me.

Of course they could tease us with just Mario, Link, Kirby and Pikachu fighting it out on NEW Battlefield.

I don't think they're going to show anything off at E3 -- by "final predictions until E3," I meant that I'm going to change my roster after E3 to accomodate any new game announcements. We won't see Smash Bros. footage until September/October at the absolute earliest.

I hope if they include Mario's FLUDD again that they choose to do more with it. The FLUDD, in my eyes, really should have been the equivalent of an entirely different stance for Mario and I'd have liked to see his entire set of special moves change when he had equipped it.

High Jump, Rocket Nozzle, and Hover Mode, Neutral would have been the FLUDD skill we've seen in Brawl. Down-Special would have switched the varying Mario modes.

Also this guy.

I want him playable, or at the very least the chance that we'll see Luigi with a Vacuum somewhere in his moveset with the release of Luigi's Mansion 2 is plausible. I just hope they don't give it the FLUDD treatment because I'll miss the ridiculousness that was his Down-Special as a means to recover.
E.Gadd will undoubtedly be assist trophied though. :(

This definitely isn't going to happen for an item Mario used in one game. Honestly, I wouldn't be too surprised if F.L.U.D.D. gets replaced entirely with something from a more recent Mario game.

I dunno. I sincerely hope the eventual roster is more exciting than that. The smallest roster update to any Smash and most of them very safe and boring choices.

They'll probably change marios down b to his waggle jump move from Galaxy. It fits pretty well, and gives a boost to his recovery like mashing his 64/Melee down b.

This. It just doesn't really strike me as an interesting roster.

I agree, actually, but the thing is, "shock value" has never explicitly factored into any of the Smash Bros. rosters for the sake of it. Which interesting or exciting characters are left that would make sense in terms of recognition, impact, and gameplay plausibility? Every Smash Bros. roster up to this point has felt very organic -- there haven't been any forced inclusions (besides Melee's clones, which is another argument altogether).

The well of important-yet-unexpected characters in the vein of Mr. Game & Watch and R.O.B. has dried up. I've seen people throw the possibility of Diskun and Sheriff around (myself included), but characters like those seem to be suggested only because people are expecting another G&W/R.O.B. by following a nonexistent pattern. In their own right, Game & Watch and R.O.B. are iconic, deserving characters; Diskun and Sheriff aren't.

no shock value!?

Ness in SSB
Mr.Game & Watch in SSBM
Snake in SSBB

don't tell me you weren't shocked when a poster boy for sony appeared in the first trailer.

I said "for the sake of it" -- there's never been a character in Smash Bros. included just to surprise people. All of the unexpected characters were equally deserving on their own merits.

EarthBound was only three years old when Smash 64 was being planned, and the studio that developed Smash Bros. also developed EarthBound. Yeah, ten-year-old me didn't expect to see him in the game, but looking back, his inclusion wasn't such a shocker.

Mr. Game & Watch represents an entire line of handheld consoles spanning a decade-plus. He's iconic.

Snake's a third-party character, so the same line of thinking doesn't apply, but he's definitely iconic. If Mega Man appeared at the end of the Brawl trailer he would have been just as unexpected, but now that there's a precedent for third-party characters his potential inclusion is no longer considered shocking.

Sakurai said it in his own words, but the pool of deserving newcomers is very much finite. 95% of the worthy characters that didn't make it into Melee were included in Brawl; the list is as small as it could possibly be.

Fairly conservative but I like it. The one thing I doubt is Lucario staying in next to a new Pokemon.

Sigh, not gonna argue as I'm sure people are tired of my rants but I will say that it's EASY to rationalize any character choice after the fact. It wouldn't be hard to swallow an Advanced Wars character getting in (Long running Nintendo War's series with 15+ games) or a GS (Successful Nintendo Handheld RPG series with 3 installments so far) or S&P characters (Already highly wanted for Brawl, now the series as a new installment because of it's cult following and is no longer Japan only) or Travis Touchdown (Snake Case) or Captain Syrup (Staple Wario villain/ reveal) or a damn character from Nintendo's old playing card series (homage to a critical part of Nintendo's history) or w/e when you realize that it's always ultimately Sakurai's choice and it's not dictated by either Nintendo or sales numbers.

Even if they can be rationalized with some thought, I think even a character from Advance Wars or even Custom Robo would still warrent some real surprise over the more certain picks like Palutena or Ridley, especially since Sakurai feels like he had a finite list to choose from.

Be careful cednym doesn't believe in logic.
