When did this obssession with hardware begin? This gen?

I'm pretty sure no one gave a Damn about the specs of something last gen.

You obviously missed the GameCube 12 million polygons per second debacle (not to mention similar stupid arguments going back every generation).

Yeah well I expect the PS4/XB3 to look 2X to 3X betters but what exactly does that look like? When does budgets get high enough to not look any better... Think of MS, they announced an AAAA title is in the works, I am fairly sure this is for XB3, and you know what will be AAAA about the title? The budget.
Not necessarily. Keeping the same type of budgets we have in this cycle, there's a lot of stuff more capable hardware will allow to greatly improve the visuals. Budget excuse is not always applicable.

Since Atari, Coleco days? Amiga, Spectrum? Genesis, SNES? The "hardware obsession" is far from a new trend in the world of videogames.

What's this talk about fixed function shaders? Has there been anything actually hinting at that and does AMD even have any such tech? I know Nintendo likes stable, predictable results and it made a lot of sense for the 3DS and even more so for the gamecube but would it really have any beneficial value in a 2012 home console?

Wasn't on GAF then. Didn't really check gaming media that much either. That must've been why I was so oblivious. I was in heaven with the games.

I'm trying to keep my expectations in check, if the system is a lot more powerful than what I and other devs are letting on, then that makes me a happy camper.
And all it costs you is being an annoying downer for the next three weeks!

You're not keeping your expectations in check; you're just being pessimistic. You're expecting to be disappointed, not trying to avoid disappointment. As a result, if it doesn't blow you away, you're going to be disappointed.

I'd just like to go ahead and suggest that E3 will come and go and we will still all basically know nothing. No clue about the firmware, no real idea about overarching things like the Nintendo Network, games shown that don't give any clear idea about system power, etc. We will see the final form factor, if it even changes at all, some video/demos of some new games and how they use certain system features, and that will be it.

It wouldn't be Nintendo any other way.

Probably.

Yeah, I'm open to being wrong and maybe the first UE4 footage will have me eating crow, but I don't expect any next-gen console title to look like a full generational leap over the best of current-gen. If even Samaritan doesn't, to my eyes...
That's my impression, and why I don't stress too much over it.

Lets be realistic here though. The Wii U comes out before the end of 2012, likely before the holidays. You have at LEAST a year to not feel bad because other consoles aren't even out yet. Then when they do come out which will be before the holidays of 2013 most likely, a lot of games won't look MUCH better, so I'd say you have almost 2 years before this system becomes outdated. But 2 years into the lifecycle is when we'll start getting Zelda and Metroid and shit so by then you won't care.

Fin.
See, this is how you moderate expectations. The glass is half full, not half empty.

IMO the API the core architecture was originally designed from is somewhat pointless since these GPUs can be tweaked and altered in various ways with each component reaching a certain level of performance or efficiency.

I'm curious, what was it at E3 that leads you to believe you'll be playing games with that level of fidelity?

Edit:

You're setting yourself up for disappointment.

:) actually i m curios to know what you didn't see?here whatever we are discussing for past year or so is based on history of Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony which gives us the trend to think. From nintendo history, whatever they show for demos are always lesser than the game itself.. And what we should expect from customized power7 with customized dx10 ~ 11 level gpu with embedded ram and closed system to produce; which type of results??

I would be, if I wasn't expecting certain Nintendo games to sear away my retinas with their beauty. This will happen.

IdeaMan

My source is my ass!
Since when is Ideaman not-impressed by the hardware? He didn't give that impression before. :(

This thread has a tendency to re-write the history, put other words in other people mouth, transform what someone say, etc, it's exhausting.

TheGreatMightyPoo asked me this:

IdeaMan, in general, how have developers who you have had contact with or have heard about felt about the kits they have right now???

Really happy???

Satisfied???

Disappointed???

You probably haven't asked them such a question.

I answered this:

For the very latest dev kits ?

The increase is slight as i said. And a new tidbit: it appears that even if there was a delay of 1 month+ in their delivery, the improvement is still slight, and comparable to the one related in february on those threads. In other words, my sources didn't witnessed such a boost that their projects gained 20 fps, it's less than 10.

Now, as explained before, even mere 5 additional frame per seconds between two GPU doesn't exclude the possibility that one has more features, is more modern, more efficient, etc. So maybe this tiny enhancement hide more important final & late changes in regard to the components.

The he answered this:

Nah, I just meant their overall impression of the hardware.

If this is the final stage of it, I would think they would have a general take on what they are working with whether very positive, positive or disappointed.

Then i finally answered this:

hardware capabilities wise, not impressed i must confess, but not disappointed either.
the very comforting point is their enthusiasm about the asymmetrical setting of the system, the new gameplay possibilities allowed by the control schemes, the additional screen, etc. A real toy, a creative framework for them, a space to explore new gamedesigns, etc.

Let's hope this interest, this curiosity, their apparent intent to take advantage of all these new features, will come to fruition as real & fun games available at launch.

Then Gahiggidy said:

Ideaman, he said that the developers he knows working with the wii u kits were "not impressed" with them.

Then a few people forgot all this previous conversation with Poo, took this Gahiggidy sentence and conclude that my sources were disappointed by the dev kits, without even checking my messages :p

Nowhere, i wrote i was disappointed by the hardware, nor my sources. But they aren't impressed either by the latest dev kits. It's not even "meh", it's "ok, it's an increase, but slight". (I'm not specifically answering to you but in general :) )

No no no.. in this case, I think he's speaking of his sources' "not impressed, not depressed" feelings on the hardware - not his own feelings.

thanks :p

Once again, Nintendo GAF takes innocent comments and completely blows the negative side completely out of proportion...

Yeah this one was impressive, when i first opened the browser and went to the thread, i was like "o_O"

time to catch-up

One question to z0m3le:

Why do you think that only nintendo will have fixed functions?

I'm not implying nothing with this question, is only that z0m3le amazes me when he speaks about the tech in wii u hehe.

I'm surprised that you managed to avoid system power debates for that long. I think a lot of gamers got a taste of that during the 16 bit days.

And in 2014, my prediction is that it will be much more of a chore for advertisers to find screenshots for such an ad. Will they be able to find such screenshots? Sure, I suppose. But the ad will look silly. And the viewer will have to search/examine the images in detail in order to determine their preference.

Lighting, basically. The logic is that good lighting is good lighting and every game needs it, so if you can design a unit to perform common lighting functions efficiently, then you can get more real-world performance out of your transistors at the expense of theoretical performance. That said, if such functionality does exist (and bgassassin is fairly confident that it does, so I'll trust him on it), we still have almost no idea how it's actually implemented.

I wasn't on GAF at the time, but comparing bullshit polygon counts was basically an Internet pass-time back in those days, like a precursor to the bullshit XBox360 multipliers of today.

Nintendo to offer Wii U cloud storage for save games and player profiles

Nintendo will be adding a Wii U cloud storage feature for the new console sometime in 2013, according to a source. Following the trend of cloud storage, Nintendo is said to be working on a cloud storage solution for the Wii U via the new Nintendo Network. The new cloud storage option would give 512 MB of online storage to each gamer, tied to his Nintendo Network profile. The cloud storage system is said to be exclusively for save games and player profile data.
The Wii U cloud is currently in development but will launch sometime in 2013 in Japan, followed by a worldwide roll-out. Nintendo is reportedly working with Seattle, WA-based Mozy, Inc., which has been offering cloud and backup storage for consumers since 2005. A source from within Mozy tells Wii U Daily that the company was approached by Nintendo in 2010, but that work on the service began in late 2011. The Wii U cloud will be seamlessly integrated into the Wii U channels and will be tied to the specific Wii U user account.
Nintendo’s main competitors, Sony and Microsoft, both offer cloud storage for save games and user files, the latter offering 512 MB free via Xbox Live.

Because of Nintendo's own GPU team based on the old ArtX employees, they definitely had a hand in the kit, and because Sony and Microsoft went to AMD and asked for a GPU, they don't have a team like that at AMD, so I figure that it would be pretty weird for them to do something like this... But for Nintendo it makes sense... Also it could probably help with Wii Backwards compatibility, just thinking back to Zelda OOT and Majora's Mask here, but if they had bugs in every game like the versions for Gamecube, it would be a pretty big headache.

Think of MS, they announced an AAAA title is in the works, I am fairly sure this is for XB3, and you know what will be AAAA about the title? The budget.

Any talk of 2x or 3x anything is useless without context. How do you gauge something is 3x better looking?

Keeping budgets under control will be a big focus next gen so there's likely to be a big focus on optimizing tools and pipelines to improve efficiency. I can see much of the improvements with UE4 surrounding their tools being one of the major focal points.

as u guys know when we enter in 3d graphics race back in ps1/n64 era, companies use number of polygons displayed as benchmarks for capabilities. and then same when we enter into Ps2/GC/xbox generation, it was polygons (20million or so) with the nicer textures and lighting stuff.

and once we have entered into current Gen, then all we see is shaders and basically more polygons stuff. Now when we look at next gen what can we expect??? more shaders more effects more polygons??

secondly, if all the next gen systems will be based on similar type of API specs with some extra whistles (fix functionality eg. lighting) I do not see much of the difference. ok some may be running on 1080p and some may b lower. but other than resolution/fps will there be any other difference??

trends seems to be like

nes (2d) to snes(enhance 2d)

PS1/N64(3d) to gc/ps2/xbox (enhanced 3d)

xbox360/ps3 (3d with shaders) to WiiU/ps4/sbox720 (3d with enhance shaders)

The importance of polygons has taken a back seat since the introduction of normal mapping which can create the illusion of high poly models wrapped around a lower poly mesh. This isn't to say that polygon counts haven't improved and won't improve next gen though.

Next gen will be about having more effects, at higher precision, rendered more efficiently.

I agree with what you are saying... "Looking" is completely subjective, and opinionated... but I base it on the guestimated measurements purely of the GFLOPs available from those cards... For instance, if the 360 can produce 240GFLOPs, than I am expecting the Wii U's GPU to produce about 720GFLOPs (this is just a guess based on talks with BG, that may or may not of included long walks on the beach ;) And if that is the case with Wii U, and we know that PS4 set out for 1800GFLOPs, and Xbox3 to have 2100GFLOPs... well, that leaves them somewhere around ~3X greater than Wii U.

A stop gap is what I'm expecting the Wii U to look like, and I'm fine with that, just give me amazing Asymmetric Gameplay, a Wiimote+ in the box, a handheld that allows me to take my Wii U games to my bed, and games that look better than Uncharted 3 with some Tessellation and better lighting... I mean I'm always buying the console from the house that Mario built, and I own a PC that will produce graphics not only better than Wii U, but better than PS4/XB3, so what do I care if the Wii U's graphics will be outdated, that isn't the reason PC gamers buy consoles.

guys is there any gpu technology which produces >=1.8teraflops without getting extreme cooling accessories and lower power consumption??

It is reasonable to assume that the PS4 and Xb³ can reach those goals without taking substantial losses per console and without going higher in price than, say, what the Xbox 360 started at? I would think that they'd be a big gun shy on repeating that facet of the last generation, given how much the former is still in the red and how long it took the latter to get out of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compar...g_units#Southern_Islands_.28HD_7xxx.29_series

Depends on what you consider "lower power consumption".

In the "Southern Islands" (that's the "GCN" that people have been talking about here and there), just under 1.8 GFLOPS has a max TDP of 130W. 2.1 GFLOPS would probably take around 150W. This line has been out for months, so in a year, maybe they'll eke the power draw down a bit.

edit: They can take away features to slim it down as well, mind.

That's for the cloud, not.the console.

Nintendo is a bit iffy when "after the fact" features are involved. I worry that they'll make minimal use of cloud storage if it's introduced many months after the console itself comes out.

I find it hard to believe, but it's the target specs that have been thrown around in here for a while... I firmly think from a logical business side, they should not try to push that high and instead keep the prices down, but I guess they are afraid of Nintendo being relevant to the core gamer, that they have to focus on power, but history will tell you that PS2 beat the Xbox with a much bigger difference than just performance (it's GPU features simply couldn't match what was in the Xbox)

So we will see how things work out, but I am going to let the "facts" be "facts" and just calculate it all in, if those consoles don't have that sort of power, and choose to compete with games, well then... There might be hope for the future of Playstation and Xbox yet.

And 10% of participants involved told us "Get off my lawn!" Yes, you heard it here first, folks. "Get off my lawn!" is more popular than Atari.
Fair enough, I do feel od looking at that ad. I mean, it was a chunk of my early childhood. And who didn't like George Plimpton back then?

And I just realized: I was in the Atari camp. So apparently I started early in life with the whole "being able to enjoy weaker hardware so long as the games kept comin' " thing. Funny, that..

Nintendo patent shows slight redesign of 3DS Circle Pad?

3DS lite Hype! and could be change for Wii U if they are for 3DS

"an operating knob"?

They're not saying that you can rotate it in addition to sliding it, are they?

edit: Slightly more on topic, it has in the past struck me that the Wii U slidey things do look more like knobs, being upraised and all. I'm looking forward to an etch-a-sketch app with proper controls, Nintendo!

What Nintendo need is to have GTA V and Valve on board.

It would be amazing if they had a 5 months GTA V exclusive and DOTA 2/Steam.

No prob' it was just for the fun, anticipating haters reactions. I don't stress too much about the Wii U's spec', I'm sure it will be fine for what it needs to do (Nintendo strategy and port friendly). My concerns are more about lineup, features and Upad (1 or 2?)...

Let's create a team: The Annoying Frenchies Crew ! :D

Didn't Microsoft have to pay something like fifty million dollars for exclusivity on some useless GTA IV DD add-on? I shudder to think how much they'd demand to have their game absent on consoles with a combined >120 million user base already prepped for the title via a prequel release during a holiday season. I don't think Nintendo can foot a quarter billion dollars or more for bragging rights.

Someone please make a threat for that patent. The meltdowns will be glorious.

If you insist.

"Hey, Nintendo! You guys had better give me that patent or there'll be trouble!" *shakes fist*

Been busy getting exercise by talking lots of walks in the beautiful summer weather (yeah, crazy huh?), playing EarthBound and arguing with people about Other M (anagram for Mother...coincidence?!) so have I missed anything since the Cloud rumour?

Nintendo has just been granted a US patent, lasting 14 years, for the 'ornament design for an operating knob for portable electronic computer'

lol Patent language is always awkward but this one is especially funny.
