Seriously SE?

I don't understand why they can just make a new FF title using the same engine that FF3 had (the DS port).

Because Dimensions wasn't made for iOS or Andriod. It's a port of a game made for imode devices. They probably couldn't do 3D or handle the Final Fantasy III engine.

Stop half-assing it, SE. I can't believe they still don't realize that they could make a killing on iOS if they actually made a decent FF game and priced it right.

FF1 and 2?

Those released over 2 years ago and they still constantly pop up in the top 25 RPG section of the app store. Their ability to not fall off the face of the earth for 2 years is pretty impressive I'd say. They probably made some nice money on it in the long run but we'll never know.

I tend to agree though, I wish they would do something really awesome. FF dimensions will probably be really cool, though, despite the horrible art.

Drakerider sounds like it has the potential to be something really awesome.

So it is that cell phone game from Japan.

The filter and UI they are using are hideous, but I at least we're getting it in English.

SE sure does love using that ugly ass font for their old school HD stuff.

The original version wasn't particularly good looking (SE apparently forgot how to make 2D maps at some point), but at least it owned up to what it was. This is just hideous on every level.

Am I so wrong in thinking that if Square-Enix:

  • Made an original "FF" game in 2D for iOS
  • Aimed for an FF4 level of content
  • Used it as an opportunity to try out new, up-and-coming artists, directors, and composers
  • Put a modicum of effort into making it look decent, given the platform
  • Sold it for $10

it could probably be extremely successful?

Maybe 15 with no filter and a new font.

Old school looking with new school mechanics turn or ATB based games can and should do well on smartphones. Is there anyone that can still make those types of games compelling without breaking the budget and are they at SE?

Square please let Final Fantasy die while it still retains a little dignity.
Thing is this doesn't seem TOO bad, they just took a shit on it in porting, seemingly ignoring that, hey, we're also nostalgic for the original look! Though they did this with FFIV: The After Years and that didn't have any filter options.

SE can be really dumb/frustrating at times. 16-bit visuals don't need to be a Japanese phone exclusive!

So their epic plan now is to stick FINAL FANTASY game on anything they do to sell it?

WOW.... remember guys the old days when we used to hype the sh*t of ourselfs when they announce a new FF game and how HQ it was!!?

Seems like forever away...

Hideous. They added a hideous filter.

I agree. If it was more pixelated it would look better. Still the art style and choose of colours are terrible. I am still hyped for a classic FF style game aslong as the battle system is solid.
The battle music is very nice but not the rest of the tracks I have listened.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
This looks embarrassing. Like, I've seriously done better with RPG Maker 2000. Square's 2D artists were unrivaled back in the day - just look how beautiful Bahamut Lagoon, Chrono Trigger and Seiken 3 are.

Love udivision's pic!

I'm always interested in more mobile RPGs but geez. I actually feel like you have to go out of your way to make something look this bad. I expect more from SE on the visual department, even if it's just a port (vaseline-filter CT notwithstanding, the current version of FFT on iOS looks great).

I honestly think we'll get there. Probably $15 though.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
The player characters look even more weird than the NPC. It looks ugly as hell.
