I've only read the first half of Snowy Mountain Syndrome (a chapter in Light Novel 5)

which takes place almost immediately after the Hot Pot party you see at the end of Disappearance and Kyon was just as annoyed/ticked off as he was before, maybe a little bit less but certainly enough to make me question if I was truly reading from the perspective of post-Disappearance Kyon, which it most certainly was. I have to admit, I stopped reading the light novels at Snow Mountain Syndrome because Kyon didn't really come off as a someone who really learned to appreciate his new life.

That's really disappointing. Oh, well.

I really don't think any words I come up with now will do justice to this film. I think... Even if I didn't enjoy the two seasons of the Haruhi TV show, I would still have loved this to death. This film is basically everything good and right about the franchise condensed in a perfect little package. Almost three hours... But, honestly, I really wouldn't have minded if it lasted ten hours. Maybe my bowels would, but I sure as hell wouldn't.

So... The story is basically about Kyon coming to terms with his

DESERVES SOME GODDAMN ATTENTION.

In the end, everything

seems mostly the same... But that's not true at all, considering how we see this world through Kyon's perspective - which, well, turned 180º.

And the events that led everything to this point were delicious to watch. You can feel the tension, the suffering, the doubts... And then,

when you think you've got it all figured out, comes Asakura and freaking stabs you in the back.

The film didn't change the way I view any of the characters.

What it did was reinforce my feelings towards them. Nagato's just... Oh my heart. The interactions between her "faulty" version and Kyon were some of the most bittersweet moments in the history of anything I've ever watched. The scene in which he hands her back the Literature Club registration form was absolutely _________ (fill the gap - I have no words). And then, when Kyon's back to the regular world, Koizumi tells him to look down, and he sees her. Fuck the haters, man... Haruhi, man.

In short: Kyon is the luckiest 2D guy ever.

10/10. I don't even give a shit. And I'll punch anyone who skips

As I say at much greater length in my last post, they made Cecily several times more useless in the anime than she is in the manga version. In the manga Luke does need to save her on a regular basis, and there's a lot of sexism, but there's a lot more in the anime. A lot more. And all traces of Cecily's competence are completely gone. She does begin to gain some competence in the second half, but one of her major character traits in all versions is that she's weak, and frequently needs to be protected by Luke. If you ever read some of it though, you will notice that Cecily's a bit more competent in the manga. But in any form, it's a very sexist series.

Do you like Azaka from her very limited appearances so far? If so, you'll enjoy 6. That movie is all about Azaka. Shiki is almost a side-character, which makes it a nice breather after the awesomeness of 5.

7 is a total letdown compared to 5, especially the ending. Shiki and Mikiya

There's also the Blu-ray epilogue, which can be thought of loosely as 8 but really isn't because it's just 20 minutes of Shiki and Mikiya engaging in exposition about stuff you probably don't care about. Shiki's origin (such as it is) is revealed in the epilogue. I can save you 20 minutes of your life you won't get back and just tell you that Shiki's origin is

Goddamit, you're making me want to watch these movies again.

From the limited screen time with her, I can't really form an opinion of her yet but judging by the episode preview the next episode seems... interesting at least. In any case, I'll be finishing both movies and probably the epilogue after I get some other stuff cleared off my backlog.

But yeah overall, I've been pretty impressed with the series thus far. I've already been recommending the movies to a couple people. It's sad to hear from multiple sources that the final film doesn't live up to the rest of the series though.

And to think I had sub 20, if not sub 10 posts in the Winter thread. Tragic.

It really is a shame that the thread for Tsuritama completely died, considering how it became the best show of the season.

Not that I was surprised. It's a show called Tsuritama by the guy behind Mononoke and was about fishing. Most people have no idea about what any of that means (well , people know what fishing is but many consider it to be boring). So it was doomed from the start, really.

Have no idea how this show literally passed me by. Only until people started posting impressions for the final episode I even became aware of its existence. How is this even possible?

Just finished Kids on the Slope. I am conflicted about that ending. The time-skip felt very jarring and out of place. And in terms of how the characters were acting, it didn't feel like they had changed much at all. So...Kaoru grew his hair out? You'd think there would be more significant changes after eight years. The whole thing just felt very superficial.

Personally, I would have preferred that the show end with Kaoru going away on the train. I think it's a fitting end to a coming-of-age story. Everyone moves on with their lives, and maybe they have faint recollections of days past every now and then. Also, I know the show set it up and everything, but Kaoru did not seem like a good fit for being a doctor. I could see him as an engineer or something, but not a doctor.

This movie truly is amazing. Beautifully animated, lovingly detailed, and a really nice story! I'm still reading the 7th book but I really hope a Season 3 is animated at some point. ^_^

It doesn't matter if you know nothing bad is going to happen to the characters, the important thing is how they complete their journey. The destination might not be in doubt, but how do they earn that? The core theme of Tsuritama is learning what friendship means and finding something in life worth doing.

It's a journey of how a boy who have constantly been moving from place to place finally settles down and finds a group of people he can connect with in a common interest which he didn't even know he had. Learning a new hobby with a bunch of new people in a new place, and that being his anchor to live his next phase in life. That is the real story of Tsuritama. The exaggeration and science fiction elements of aliens and saving the world are just flavorings to make the production more interesting and quirky.

It's kinda funny if you think about it, but ultimately Tsuritama and Kids on the Slope were really about the same themes and character growth directions. The difference is that Tsuritama developed the entire cast well, knew how to make the best use of the 12 episodes, and in the end focused on the things which mattered without ever diverting from the course. On the other hand Kids on the Slope bit on more than it could chew by trying to adapt 9 whole volumes of an acclaimed manga in a mere 12 episodes. Too many dynamics, too many sub plots, too many complications. Even with severe editing, it was never going to come out perfectly.

yup, that's exactly my feelings about tsuritama. also agree on the similarities between both shows and how tsuritama delivered overall.

I was surprised to find out, after doing some research, that the original creators of the old french comic this is based on were still alive. Having the cartoon adapation be co-produced by satelight seems like the sort of decision that'd only get accepted when the original creators were dead. Though I guess not all French comic creators hate Japanese cartoons as much as Uderzo does.

So I just bought a ticket to my very first anime convention. Anime Revolution in mid-August in Vancouver. They've got a half dozen Sailor Moon English version voice actors together for a Sailor Moon 20th anniversary panel (Sailor Moon was my guilty pleasure), as well as three days of...
