Yeah, the series exploded on the PSP. I don't think it ever cracked a million in Japan on the PS2. Tri managed to do better than that, but it still not even close to the portable numbers.
That's what I thought I heard. I guess the game was actually an amazing, ahead-of-its-time design, a 3D action game that worked great on handhelds and playing with friends wherever, but shoehorned as an online console game with a ridiculous right stick control scheme.
For any console MH game they made they could make more money putting those resources towards a new handheld game.

You might as well start asking why Nintendo has never made a console Pokemon.
At this point, yeah. It's less ridiculous just because the series started on consoles and so a lot of people would naturally want it where they first played or prefer playing it, but it's just done so much better on handhelds and like I said it seems like design practically meant for them.

Tri is seemingly considered a failure.

What an utter failure. I'm surprised Capcom continues to invest in these Monster Hunter bombas.

Yeah, even back in the PS2 days it was obvious where the future of the series was heading.

These are the Japanese lifetime sales.

PS2 2005-01-20 Monster Hunter G 232,239
PSP 2005-12-01 Monster Hunter Portable 668,964
PS2 2006-02-16 Monster Hunter 2 570,651

Ehh, I imagine it probably still did well enough then actually. Monster Hunter games don't seem to have as much time and money invested in them as, say, Resident Evil. At the very least they must be saving a lot by not bothering with loads of VA or acted out cinematics.

Obviously he means by comparison to what they had hoped for. The game struggled to 1 million in Japan even with price drops. 3G has completely clobbered it. Of course the solid western sales mitigated some of that, but its still not great. There's not much incentive to make a more expensive console game and sell less than half the units you can with a handheld version. I think its more likely that we might see HD up-ports or something, rather than ground up console games Monster Hunters in the future.

Huh, never realized the PS2 were quite that low. Tri did quite a bit better by comparison.

Where is the best play to start if your kinda new to the series? I have a vita so is freedom unite any good? I heard people geek over mapping the camera to the right analog stick so i figure I might as well play it on my vita instead of the PSP.

Yes it's great. It may not be the best option for easing into the series as it is much tougher than Tri or Portable 3rd but it is bursting with content. Freedom Unite is also on sale in the PSN for $9.99

Not a chance this is less exciting than the last stage event... I wasn't planning on staying up for this but I must now. Just to get that cat costume out of my mind!

While I'm watching this I'm wondering why a localized version of the game isn't in my hands right now. *sigh*

I'm basing my "Capcom is not happy with the sales" thing off this thing:

https://twitter.com/gibbogame/statuses/206299675446349825

Fan: Could you say if there is any hope for Monster Hunter 3G will be localized in America anytime this year?

David Gibson (Macquarie Capital Securities Japan): Capcom keep saying its unlikely as audience not there based on the Wii game.
