I'm the only one who dislikes the children thing? It was out of place.

Yes, you are the only one. Judging the age of all those children this was probably the first time where they could happily celebrate their winnings with their kids. They are football players but also happy fathers, and celebrating with your kids is probably the best thing you can do in your life.

I didn't mind. Besides, they were incredibly adorable.

Uefa Euro 23 Squad: Buffon, Casillas, Neuer; Pique, Coentrao, Lahm, Pepe, Ramos, Alba; De Rossi, Gerrard, Xavi, Iniesta, Khedira, Busquets, Ozil, Pirlo, Alonso; Balotelli, Fabregas, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Silva.

Player of the tournament: Iniesta

Terry instead of Pique, Perreira instead of Lahm. I'm fine with the rest.

I'm sort of sad Hummels is out because of one crappy game. And yeah as much as I dislike Terry, he was awesome this tourney.

Come the fuck on now.

Well in between witnesses saying they saw famous football players walk into Fuentes offices and Fuentes on multiple occassions admitting it outright, just never mentioning names, the Spain midgets have some amazing stamina. Everyone is tired at the Euros, but the most heavily taxed players suddenly grow wings during the final match while Italy crumples down around them. Of course football is not a game about stamina per se, so they still deserve the win, but between this final, last WC's final and the match with Portugal I scratched my beard a few too many times.

Hummels also looked really bad against van Persie before his goal. One feint was enough to send him into nomansland.
But that was kind of a lucky shot, from the English topscorer and PL MVP.

No Joao Moutinho on that list has to be a joke unless nobody saw the games against Spain and Czech Republic. But I guess you have to play in a bigger club than FC Porto to get on that list.

Fabio Coentrao did a nice Euro but he clearly wasn't a top 6 defender. But he plays for Real Madrid so he gets in.

Italy is even more infamous for its doping culture than Spain, do you really think the Italian squad would be clean where Spain isn't?

I see. So Ronaldo, Nani, Terry, Ozil, and Khedira were also using doping because they showed an excellent amount of stamina in the entire EC while they played more then 50+ matches in oné season? Mind over body. That is all I can say.

I don't think blood spinning has an effect similar to cocaine.

And Iniesta, David Silva, Fabregas did not suddenly grew wings as well. They were excellent in most of the matches. The extra adrenaline that comes when playing in a final is enough for a lot of players to go 100%

Not to mention that the majority of Italy is filled to the brim with 30+ aged players in the Italian competition where the majority of the matches are played on defense and countering, so the stamina drains a lot faster when you compare it to players that originate from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Wat? Coentrao excelled at this EURO. Kept his left side completey defended besides one early cross from Boateng which was partly deflected but still managed somehow to land in the net after an amazing header by Gomez. Besides that he still found enough time for extremely dangerous runs, even with a Ronaldo infront of him who does not care that much about defensive work.

To be fair, I was thinking of adding Moutinho for Busquets. But it's an even draw - fighting spirit & stamina vs technique and off the ball movement.

Yeah that's always the case. For instance as brilliant as Ozil is, was he really instrumental for Germany, or selected for his fame? Plus it seems you have to have passed the group stage too. I think Dzagoev should've been in there as well.

I'd definitely expect Italy to like some of the juice too, it just didn't show in their matches. They looked every bit as tired as England in extra time for instance.

Jiracek is also a name missing from the group stage if you think of names making an impact, but still would you really say VFL Wolfsburg's Jiracek is better than any of these midfielders in that list?

And yes, Özil was amazing even though most german "event fans" with no clear idea of football couldn't see it. Created spaces for other players but lacked the support to do anything meaningful when he moved forward with the ball. Had to settle for free kicks or stopping and passing the ball back. Must have been a frustrating tournament for him.
Friend of me saw him this saturday in Düsseldorf's Ufer 8 club... looked pissed that's why he didn't wanna talk to him

BTW, this has to be the first time I've ever seen unanimous praise for Spain in the comments section of the French and Argentinian online diaries.

Feels weird.

This Spain side would absolutely defeat the Brazil 1970 side due to fitness alone. It'd be a walkover.

Pretty much. The commentators here talked about this. The game has become much faster paced. The amount of time one person holds the ball is significantly shorter than it was back then.

Yup. I'd argue that if you put the likes of Ronaldo/Messi/C Ronaldo/Zidane/Ronaldinho in Pele's era they would all perform to a much, much higher level than him.

edit: same could be said of Best, Euseabio etc too

kurtofan wtf it's just football

I'm thinking there should have been five more rest days, I mean I'm not saying Spain wasn't better but Italy could have done much more if they weren't so tired.

They got two big matches with three less days of rest in all, you pay the toll in the end.

Maybe Spain would have still won but it wouldn't have been so one sided.

Spain got 2 less days than portugal too, shit happens.

Reina is awesome. Such a good professional and still so funny :D

Didn't Italy have more days rest in their Semi Final match? Spain had to play Portugal with 2 days less rest, so this evens itself out.

This is football, doping is useless for a team playing like Spain, it might help DiMatteo's Chelsea though. The reason Spain or Barcelona many times finish the games in better shape is simply because the rivals have been chasing the ball 70% of the time. On top of that you add that Italy had one player less and less time to rest (although Spain played 120 minutes the day before). If you watched the semifinal, Portugal was miles better physically pressing for almost the first 90 minutes without barely a rest. When doping improves technique and pass precission then we could talk about it.

It's true that Spain's normal playstyle is to pass the ball around to sap the other team's stamina and then pounce when they get tired. But this didn't work in the Portugal or Italy match. In fact, Italy had the majority ball possession for a change (at least the first half). Regarding the Portugal match, there was a very clear difference in stamina between Portugal and Spain, in favor of Spain. Portugal was better side the first half, the second half it was tied and only in extra time did Spain suddenly get the upper hand, overpowering Portugal with ease. And Spain has won many a finals match in extra time, so doping would definitely be very useful.

Someone does not like Spain to win the third big championship in a row so they try to find the most stupid reasons. Yes. I am talking to you.
