Phantasy Star Online 2 Beta and Information Thread [Open Beta Live Now]

I think the grinder/attribute/abilities guy hates me. I'm trying to get one of my sword to have 3 slots for abilities but it just keeps failing at 70-80% rate.

I can't speak for everyone, but there was a pretty massive storm last night that has left a significant number of people in the US Mid-Atlantic without power. Myself included.

Ah I didn't know it was that massive, I hope everyone is alright :/

And unrelated but does anyone know the goal of the third desert mission? (the one for Lv. 20) The last area only has two emergency quests and clearing them does nothing :(

If I'm not mistaken, you gotta run around till the drilling quest pops up or the collect the crystal quest.

Hooray, Mines!
Is the "Tundra" the same as the previously known snow level?
Yeah, both are previously known locations, now with some more details.

Plus, if I'm not mistaken, they've set those zones will be added to the first update, which will be released when the game is actually launched, so I'm guessing we're looking at a July release here.
Given that there's practically no server lag anymore and I haven't heard about any bugs, we might be looking at a really soon release.
Thanks, well that's a bummer I ran around for half a hour and nothing happened, what a incredibly random quest :/
Someone suggested that you have to do all the Codes on that map for the drills to finally pop.

That's awesome. I've been planning to avoid the Japanese official release and wait for English to play properly, but it's becoming really tempting... I hope we get that release date soon. If it's 2012, I'll wait. If it's longer, I might just give in to the Japanese servers.

I only watched the abilities video and I never played the first game. Can anybody explain a bit about this game? Is it some kind of MMORPG? I also read the OP but I'm still a bit confused.

It has more in common with something like, say, Monster Hunter than your normal MMO. Only 4 man parties, though now in PSO2 you get multi party maps that assign you to the same instance as another group for fun and profit. Combat is also much more in the vein of an action game than an MMO. You have spells, abilities and skills but they all have more active animations and combat feels more fast paced because of it. You also get random events that can occur while in a mission which can totally change the gameplan for completing a mission (Having to fight 2 boss creatures back to back will put a strain on time and resources when trying to rush the actual boss with a time limit to keep in mind, for example).

There's only the 3 classes. Hunter serves as the melee class, Ranger is the gun class and Force is your mage class. They all have weapons that only they can use and some they can share with other classes. You're allowed to swap between classes on a single character so you can play as all 3 without having to re-log on and swap to a different character if it catches your fancy.

The original PSO had a massive loottable going for it, and so far there's been a decent chunk of items to find in the Beta but I hope they have a lot more stuff tucked away for release. There are still some weapons in PSO I have never found or seen someone carry in my party, and I have been playing since Dreamcast V1. But if loot hounding is your thing, PSO2 might be able to fill that depending on how they handle it.

How about reading the op? :)

Hunting rare and extremely rare weapons is one of the biggest draws for me. I hunted a spread needle for so, so long in PSO... I hope PSO2 has a huge range that doesn't feel underwhelming. I'm saddened that there doesn't seem to be rare variations of enemies that have a high red-box drop rate. Was always exciting seeing a rare enemy. But hey it's a different game, so there's hopefully new methods of invoking similar excitement.
PSU synthing took nearly all the fun out of weapon hunting. Glad that's gone.

I just realised (which is strange it took me so long ._.' lol), weapon drops are extremely tailored to whatever class you are, aren't they? I pretty much only ever get guns as a Ranger. Can I still find any class of weapon, but it's just very uncommon?

Thanks for explaining things, I liked the look of the combat. Hopefully they'll do an english release.

Thanks for reading my post man.
Sorry about that, didn't notice the last part.
It's basically a Vindictus like game, with a quest hub and a highly arcade'y playstyle. You can always try it, it's free after all.

Yeah, I play a Hunter but my first red box was a 7* force wep that looks like a big wing/the halp serafi from PSU

The other red box drops since then have been two of the same gunslash

90% of the rare weapons I find are for other classes. I guess finding normal weapons unusable by your class is uncommon, but the same restrictions don't apply to the rare ones.

Well thought I'd give the game a shot, and followed the guide. Right after I put in my user name / password I get this message and than kicks me back to the username / password screen.

I think the solution to this one was writing your username all in lowercase.

It says you didn't register your Sega ID for the PSO2 service. Make sure you didn't miss that part.

I'll buy this off you for meseta if you have no use for it :3

Finally got my Ranger to level 20, now I can grind on Rappies and Hard mode City.
Played some more Force today and still can't grasp the play style of this class. Won't have other choice than to get used to it if the game won't be released when I get the Ranger to 30...

Finally got power back after some crazy thunderstorms this weekend. Can't wait to dive back in to PSO2 tonight. If anyone wants to party up in a bit, let me know.

Desert boss was a bit disappointing, specially considering I really liked the level. I was expecting some huge desert monster! lol

Instead it was just 2 enemies that I'd seen spawn on the field before

So does each area not have a "final" boss, or is it just not in the beta? I just assumed the boss at the end of free field quests was the main one. If not, would that mean Forest also has a boss we haven't seen?

Um, probably. You can distinguish real bosses from mini bosses by the fact that they don't "multiply" if you fight them while being with 2+ real people.
I can't imagine 2 or more Vol Dragons or Dark Ragnes (at least now) but they don't appear in packs.
I guess we'll see more stages with real bosses, yeah.

- After the game comes out they plan to add super huge bosses in multi-parties.
- These bosses are much bigger than normal bosses, and you can have 12 players fight it.
Yeah yeah, sounds great on paper, but I kind of don't see it. I mean I love me some multi-party action, especially for 20+ grinding, but it's not like you can see all that's happening "properly". I don't mean lag or framerate drop, but the "jumps", when the enemies are dying without seeing what's hitting them etc. Don't think it's my PC/connection. I simply can't image a super hard fight in this kind of environment.

PSO single player is pretty high up there on my list of favorite games. Is it possible to play through this solo, or does partying become a necessity?
You can solo or invite NPCs/NPC versions of your in-game friends to your party, but will encounter other players in the lobby and multi party areas.

3 "opening" campaigns have been announced for PSO2, each with a special item as a reward.
I've just stumbled upon this website and have no idea if it was there before.
Anyway, first campaign is basically giving a Rappy Doll to everyone who registers between 21.6 and 11.7 (could this mean that the live version will be out on 12.7?!)
Second one is a "Level up" and the third is called "Buying AC". Both are listed as "coming soon" with no details.

This was probably asked already but is there a date when we can expect an announcement for the west? Or should I just play the waiting game?

"Weak Bullet" on Rockbear + that sneak shoot ability (where the characters lies on stomach to shoot) = 2000 damage per bullet. Rockbear died in a couple of seconds! haha

Oh man!!! I would have totally done this if I didn't just sell it in my player shop.

Literally the DB's Saber of PSO2.
Yeah, it really is. especially considering there's normally weps waaaay better than it. I don't even know if I want to identify the second one considering I can buy a way better item for the 16k tekkering seems to cost.

Damn those Rappy Dolls are cute. I am sure SEGA will be selling those in Akiba when PSO2 comes out right?

The stuff that's coming out is everything else they announced at the second fan briefing. So Tundra, time attack mode, AC crap, etc. Also LV40 cap and next Mag evolution.

Well I had heaps of fun with it! I hope they hurry up with an English release because my time with the Japanese version ends with this beta ;_;

I wish they weren't being so quiet about it. I wonder what they're waiting for?
